Marvel Age #1000: Observations From The Backyard

Marvel Age #1000: Observations From The Backyard

Writer: J. Michael Straczynski

Artist & Colorist: Kaare Andrews

Letterer: Joe Caramagna

Publisher: Marvel

Price: $9.99

Release Date: August 30, 2023

Story

Everyone sees the world differently. Can you see what others cannot? In J. Michael Straczynski's tale, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko sit outside after school. Why does everyone think they're so weird? No one else sees what they see, but perhaps they should. Through their storytelling, the boys can communicate how they see the world. Who knows how many people might embrace their views and share their dreams?

Art

Kaare Andrews’ framed panels imbue Straczynski with timeless appeal in Marvel Age #1000. Beige matting surrounds spotted faded photos. Bright colors defy the aging process in this heartfelt portrait of three storytellers in their formative years. As Straczynski states, Marvel Comics wasn’t born this way. This portrait of boys discovering their superpowers argues otherwise.

Final Thoughts

Marvel Age #1000 explores the breadth and depth of the Marvel universe. Stories touch upon every era to ponder the company's strengths and why its heroes endure.

Marvel Age #1000 Rating: 8.9/10

Amazing Spider-Man #34 Review

Writer: Zeb Wells

Artist: Patrick Gleason

Colorist: Marcio Menyz

Letterer: Joe Caramagna

Cover Artists: John Romita Jr, Scott Hanna & Marcio Menyz; Dave Johnson; John Romita Jr., John Romita Sr. & Marcio Menyz

Publisher: Marvel

Release Date: September 20, 2023

Kraven The Hunter thrust a cursed spear into Spider-Man’s chest. With Gordon Osborn’s sins coursing through him, Peter Parker dons his black Spidey suit and buries Kraven alive. Who will he attack next? Let’s fwip into Amazing Spider-Man #34 and find out!

Story

Perhaps no one can better predict Spider-Man’s next move than Gordon Osborn. In Zeb Wells’ story, Gordon begs Mary Jane and Paul to leave New York City. But who might Spider-Man blame if he can’t find the couple?

Kraven The Hunter lies entombed beneath six feet of hard-packed dirt. While Spider-Man left him a rifle, Vladimir Kravinoff fights the desire to use it and follow his father's example. But is there nobility in wasting away or asphyxiating?

Ashley Kafka contemplates her recent actions upon her throne. Her occult rituals transferred the Green Goblin’s sins into Kraven’s spear. Yet she remains the Goblin Queen. Is she responsible for Peter’s actions?

And does she care?

Amid the breathless action of Amazing Spider-Man #34, as people flee for safety from a Spider-Man gone wrong, it’s easy to forget Randy Robertson and Janice. With their wedding shattered by violence, Randy sought the mayor’s help to come down hard on organized crime. But channeling his confusion into political action left no time to comfort his fiancée or visit his future father-in-law—and crime lord--Tombstone in the hospital.

Art

Whether it’s Mary Jane scattering a bowl of popcorn, Spider-Man lashing out in anger, or Kraven kicking the side of his coffin, Patrick Gleason unleashes the action in Amazing Spider-Man #34. Tiny scenes pack pages amid darkness as each unique panel increases the drama. Yet Mary Jane and Paul seem nonplussed, unable to recognize the danger they're in. One thing's for sure: Peter's anger and Norman's fear are evident on each man's face!

Marcio Menyz colors panels with lifelike realism. Yet light sources, action, and emotion tinge backgrounds. Seeing a character covered in crimson conveys the violence a superhero can unleash when quenching his darkest desires.

Joe Caramagna’s colored boxes and balloons reveal character thoughts in Amazing Spider-Man #34. The black and colored words in white dialogue balloons range from tiny to large, yet most are easy on the eyes. Stylized colored letters and enormous transparent ones convey dark revelry, impending doom, and anger unleashed.

Final Thoughts

As an Unfriendly Peter Parker settles old scores, Amazing Spider-Man #34 reminds us that heroes act out of love and keep no record of wrongs.

Rare Flavours #1 Review

Writer: Ram V

Artist & Colorist: Filipe Andrade

Letterer: Andworld Design

Cover Artists: Filipe Andrade; Fábio Moon; Anand R.K.; & David Mack

Publisher: Boom! Studios

Price: $4.99

Release Date: September 20, 2023

An enormous man wearing a white suit visits an art gallery in Bandra, Mumbai. Yet the painting he gazed upon dwarfs him. Standing before the immense canvas on the waxed tile floor, he composes a letter in his head to his friend Mansi. Who is this well-dressed man, and why did he abandon his café in Somarah without telling his friend goodbye? Let’s dive into Rare Flavours #1 and find out!

Story

The painting shows the legendary Hindu hero Bheema attacking the rakshasa Bakasura. Determined that the rakshasa should eat no more villagers, Bheema clubs Bakasura to death. The enormous man is sad that people today remember him as an uncouth barbarian. Yet he smiles, revealing the fangs shown in the historic painting.

As Bakasura leaves the gallery, two men are on his trail. Dilshan kneels in an alley, sniffing the rakshasa's scent. His partner Dilkush stands behind him, his feline friend Manimeow resting on his shoulders. Both men—and perhaps also the cat—are determined to find Bakasura before he kills and devours another victim.

Without background knowledge of India or the Hindu epic of Bheema and Bakasura, Rare Flavours #1 is a lot to take in. Yet it’s easy to understand how Bakasura could hunger for what he once agreed to give up. Watching the centuries pass, he found comfort in TV shows celebrating food. Anthony Bourdain's death compelled him to return to the world he left behind. Yet, surrounded by temptation, his old hunger returns. It is a monstrous, overwhelming hunger: one he cannot refuse.

Anthony Bourdain DVD set available at Amazon.com

The rakshasa meets with a young filmmaker named Mohan in one of Bandra’s beautiful cafés. He introduces himself as Rubin Baksh and asks Mohan to take a journey with him. They could make a powerful documentary about Indian cuisine and those who weave such savory magic. That is if Mohan—who goes by Mo--agrees.

Art

Filipe Andrade brews Ram V's rich story with magic all his own. His loose, flowing art evokes children's book illustrations in Rare Flavours #1. He sketches buildings and crowds while rendering Mo, Bakasura, and the hunters with compelling detail. Despite his youth, the filmmaker is already tired of life. By contrast, charming, sophisticated Bakasura—or Rubin, as he now calls himself—charms with elegant attire and impeccable manners. His hunters—hardened killers--wear frowns as they weave through the bustling city. Beware the long, sharp knives they wield!

Filipe Andrade loads his palette with soft colors. The eye-pleasing pastels convey India's vibrant diversity. He shades without relying on gray and scatters colorful reflections on polished surfaces such as tables and floors. Dilkush and Dilshan, cast in purple and mauve, sweep like shadows through the vibrant seaside city. Yet the crowning glory of Rare Flavours #1 is the mural in the opening scene. Brushstrokes flow across Bakasura as Bheema attacks the people-eater beneath a purple, orange, yellow, and turquoise sky.

Andworld Design writes Bakasura’s mental note to Mansi with black, italicized uppercase letters on scraps of light-beige parchment. This attractive font graces white dialogue balloons and mauve narrative boxes that show Dilkush’s conversation. Lowercase italics convey offscreen commentary from Bakasura--or Rubin--suffused with eloquence and reverence for how food and spices can wield magic upon the tongue.

Final Thoughts

Taking inspiration from a Hindu legend—and the longest epic poem ever written—Rare Flavours #1 tantalizes with its reverence for artistry as it tackles addiction and the allure of forbidden fruit.

Rating 8.8/10

Immortal Red Sonja TP Vol. 1 Review

Writer: Dan Abnett

Artists: Alessandro Miracolo, Emiliana Pinna & Luca Colandrea

Colorist: Ellie Wright

Letterer: Jeff Eckleberry

Cover Artist: David Nakayama

Publisher: Dynamite

Price: $19.99

Release Date: September 20, 2023

(Previewsworld.com's stated Release Date: November 1, 2023)

Riding through a storm, Red Sonja spies a house in the woods. A wizened man carrying a staff offers to let her spend the night, but only if she tells him a story. The hitch? It must be true! Why did the man reject her money? Let's leap into Immortal Red Sonja TP Vol. 1 and find out!

Story

Sonja has left Hyboria far behind. Compelled by a cursed shirt of chain mail, she has traveled to the land of Logres. She can't remove it until she finds someone to free the spirit from the cursed armor and let it live again as the reborn king.

Her host explains that the High Paindragons once ruled this land, and the last king was Arthr, son of Uthr. His nephew Mordread killed him with dark sorcery amid a devastating war. The kingdom fell, and the land became a cursed wilderness. Alas, only his house testifies to this once prosperous land.

So begins Dan Abnett’s tale in Immortal Red Sonja TP Vol. 1. The British author delves into Arthurian folklore as he pits the She-Devil With A Sword against ogres and giants, the Lady of the Lake, the Green Knight, and more. If she can find Merlyn, perhaps she can finally remove the armor shirt she’s worn for nearly a year. At the very least, she wouldn’t have to listen to the talkative spirit anymore!

Red Sonja action figure available at Entertainment Earth

Art

Alessandro Miracolo, Emiliana Pinna, and Luca Colandrea imbue Immortal Red Sonja TP Vol. 1 with All Ages Appeal. Rough-hewn characters are expressive and undergo dramatic transformations. Haunting monsters wield weapons that will test our Hyborean heroine's prowess. Sonja's armored blouse suggests a night out with friends, but nightclub owners might confiscate her sword. While lacking in detail, landscapes and buildings draw you into English lands before invading Anglo-Saxons redrew its borders.

Ellie Wright loads her palette with a wide range of colors. Grey mist rises from the cursed land. Sonja's cloak and hair match her Chestnut horse, while the opponents she fights are often green. White haze often mutes battle and light sources, but objects and people glow at night.

Black uppercase letters inhabit white dialogue balloons in Immortal Red Sonja TP Vol. 1. Smaller lowercase white words in black narrative boxes convey the cursed armor's conversation. While eye-catching, Jeff Eckleberry’s first three chapter titles demand concentration. But his colorful sound effects enliven clashes between monsters’ weapons and a sword that emerged from a pond.

An extensive cover gallery featuring artists like Joseph Michael Linsner, Junggeun Yoon, and Jae Lee proves a treasure trove in Immortal Red Sonja TP Vol. 1.

Final Thoughts

The She-Devil With A Sword hacks and slashes through the worst that Arthurian folklore can throw at her and learns the surprising nature of curses in Immortal Red Sonja TP Vol. 1.

Gunslinger Spawn #24 Review

Writer: Todd McFarlane

Artist: Brett Booth

Inker: Adelso Corona

Colorist: Ivan Nunes

Letterer: Tom Orzechowski

Cover Artists: Mike Deodato Jr.; Kael Ngu

Publisher: Image

Price: 2.99

Release Date: September 20, 2023

Taylor’s haunted by nightmare visions. Gunslinger wakes him, then tells him they’re Splitsville. Wait? Is the scarred hellspawn breaking up the team? Let’s fall into Gunslinger Spawn #24 and find out!

Story

Taylor suffered while growing up due to his less-than-human heritage. He struggled to fit in because his father never explained he didn’t belong. This reminder of his past makes Taylor notice Javier's scars. Taylor's pity reminds his hellspawn friend of unfinished business.

Javier abandons Taylor to visit his shaman. Waya reminds Gunslinger of his obligations to the boy. But Javier hasn't had time to train the boy or help Taylor fight the infection poisoning him. After dealing with the angels that pursued him and battling Clown and Violator on Omega Island, Gunslinger wants revenge on the people who hurt him and his sister. He’s waited long enough: it’s time to settle the score.

Gunslinger Spawn #24 reminds us of Taylor’s parentage and ups the stakes for his survival. Javier suffers from a similar sickness, but we haven’t seen how his angelic affliction affects him since Waya aided him in issue #18. The friends should go to school with each other. But Javier's tired of running. Make Do and Mend must do until he's balanced the scales. Watch out, villains! If Gunslinger's serving up revenge, it'll be a dish best served scorching hot!

Gunslinger Spawn figure available at Amazon.com

Art

Brett Booth and Adelso Corona open with a double-page spread of Taylor’s hellish suffering. While it doesn’t explain Taylor’s confusion, Dakota’s mention of giving Javier a steed makes more sense when Gunslinger pulls the tiny dinosaur from his pocket. The shape it assumes suggests its owner influences its transformation. Javier’s new ride--and the modern weapons Spawn supplied in issue #19--contrast with the ancient weapons and modern transportation Gunslinger used in this series debut. Two minor quibbles with Booth's otherwise excellent contributions would be the tiny panels that limit the expressiveness of Sharon's boyfriend and don’t show what Javier did to his adversary’s car.

Ivan Nunes loads his palette with vibrant colors that provide contrast and a touch of gray in Gunslinger Spawn #24. The fire surrounding Javier’s new steed burns red hot in the verdant forest. Smoky candles provide ambiance to Gunslinger’s sepia-toned scenes with Waya. Forelorn Sharon’s blue-green eyes dazzle, and Gunslinger’s red scarf and green eyes enhance the ferocity of his attack. Yet what lingers is the blood that pervades Taylor's torture.

Tom Orzechowski delivers dialogue in stylized balloons in Gunslinger Spawn #24. While the yellow words in brown narrative boxes are usually easy to read, longer sentences reduce the letter size in this issue. Sparse sound effects accentuate the action as Javier charts a new path.

Final Thoughts

Gunslinger Spawn #24 ponders the hunger for revenge, the universal nature of human suffering, and our responsibility to care for those in need.

Hexagon Bridge #1 Review

Writer, Artist, Colorist, Letterer & Cover Artist: Richard Blake

Publisher: Image

Price: $3.99

Release Date: September 20, 2023

A cartographer treks through the snow, searching for her companion. Exposure and exhaustion overwhelm her. Will she die or find her friend? Let’s leap into Hexagon Bridge #1 and find out!

Story

In 4040, researchers discovered a doorway to a parallel dimension. Yet travel through this "bridge" proves perilous. Elena nearly dies, and her husband's fate is uncertain. How much of what they perceive is real? And how much is conjured from their minds?

At the Hexagon 12 research facility, young Adley dreams of her parents. Her grandfather believes their captors are machines: Artificial Intelligence that can navigate paths through uncharted space. An A.I. project currently under development could help rescue the cartographers. But can an A. I. designed by Humans succeed where Elena and Jacob failed?

We don’t learn much about the people who work at the research post in Alaska’s Tongass Forest or how Adley’s visions pierce dimensional space in Hexagon Bridge #1. But the girl's concern for her parents seems ample reason to peer through the uncharted future toward the next issue.

Art

Snow falls upon barren trees. An orange glow beckons. When it disappears, Elena collapses. Orange lights rise from the snow and dance before her eyes. Other colored shards envelop her, and the scenery dissipates.

The orange cloud carries her to an unfinished structure in space. Elegance surrounds her as a cyborg serves her coffee in Hexagon Bridge #1. Like the neoclassical bedroom Dr. Dave Bowman inhabits in 2001: A Space Odyssey, how much of it is real?

Fractal images make up this strange dimension. Yet similarly unconnected shapes make up structures at Hexagon 12. Illuminated rectangular buildings sit next to cabins in the woods. Large interiors dwarf their inhabitants, and interior design shows reverence for the past of varied cultures amid modernism and technological advancement. Muted colors diminish people amid gray and beige further, suggesting that all is not well two millennia from now.

Small uppercase dialogue inhabits rectangular white dialogue boxes. Inflection emboldens speech, and no sound effects intrude upon the contemplative Hexagon Bridge #1.

Final Thoughts

A previously unexplored realm awaits researchers. But is it safe for humans, or only inhabitable by artificial intelligence? Science and the Paranormal merge in the intriguing Hexagon Bridge #1.

Rating 8/10

Spine-Tingling Spider-Man #0 Review

Writer: Saladin Ahmed

Artist & Colorist: Juan Ferreyra

Letterers: Joe Sabino & Joe Caramagna

Cover Artists: Juan Ferreyra; Greg Land & Frank D’Armata; Peach Momoko

Publisher: Marvel

Price: $9.99

Release Date: September 13, 2023

His complicity in the death of his Uncle Ben compelled Peter Parker to a life of service. Lately, other nightmares have plagued him: his inability to save everyone from a burning building and his failure to forge a future with Mary Jane. Now, a song haunts him. But why? And what does it mean? Let's thwip into Spine-Tingling Spider-Man #0 and find out!

Story

Has a song ever stuck in your head and refused to leave? No matter how catchy the tune or fun the lyrics, did it annoy and distract you? If so,  you'll understand what Peter's going through in Saladin Ahmed’s story. In Peter’s case, it’s no “Pump Up The Jam” or “Ice Ice Baby.” It starts like a sweet lullaby and then bespeaks acts of violence and cruelty.

As Spine-Tingling Spider-Man #0 continues, the song grows in power. It haunts Peter's days and transforms his dreams while prying his sticky fingers off their tenuous grip on reality. It makes it so he doesn't want to sleep. One evening, awakened and unsettled, he frightens a woman he's pledged to protect. It's another signal that he must discover what's happening to him—and who is causing it—soon.

The eighty-five-page episodic story unfolds as Peter helps his neighbors, battles robots, and traces incidents to their source. Peter may get lost in the web as he searches, and not all strands lead to the nexus. Along the way, his nightmare adversary will threaten Aunt May and remind him of his failure with Mary Jane.

Art

Spine-Tingling Spider-Man #0 begins with a dream. Colors and shapes emerge from the mist. It shows Peter as the world sees him. As he fights to take control, it reveals who he truly is. Then his eyes open, bathed in a universe of light. Yet he rises in a dimly lit bedroom.

Evenings in Juan Ferreyra’s panels evoke film noir, with tilted camera angles and glowing lights that color evenings with a smoky resonance. By day, Spider-Man swings above the streets and battles robots so fast that he blurs and spins a web of light. Detailed penciling and rounded shapes give way to thick inks and rough edges. Pencils or markers color an eerie dream world as Peter spies structures that mirror those in New York City.

Panels descend on scarlet strands, heralding their Infinity Comic origins in Spine-Tingling Spider-Man #0. Or they wander through the mist, showcasing Joe Sabino and Joe Caramagna’s dark, uppercase dialogue in white balloons. Listen for slashing knives, a monster's hisses, and Peter's thwips. Should you get lost, his dream will guide you, with big red letters scrawled by an unseen hand.

Final Thoughts

Caught in a waking nightmare, Peter Parker navigates a dreamscape woven by fears for those he loves and strives to protect. Spine-Tingling Spider-Man #0 is a mesmerizing journey, devoid of the goblins, lizards, and the familiar flamboyant felons Peter often fights.

Rating 9.4/10

Marvel Age #1000: Deaf Heaven Review

Marvel Age #1000: “Deaf Heaven”

Writer, Artist & Colorist: Steve McNiven

Letterer: Joe Caramagna

Publisher: Marvel

Price: $9.99

Release Date: August 30, 2023

Story

Steve McNiven transports Silver Surfer to a former battlefield. Norrin Radd leaves his surfboard to walk past corpses in the snow and a broken church to behold a mass grave. We don't learn where the battle took place. Is Norrin in the Ukraine? Does he survey the destruction wrought in Jason Aaron's recent Avengers series? Or might this be a slaughter far from the eyes of Western media? In any case, helplessness overwhelms him.

Art

While the narrow longitudinal panels limit our perception, McNiven's hand-drawn art shows Silver Surfer in exacting detail. Mephisto--his uninvited companion--grows more menacing amid Norrin's despair. Amid so many vibrant stories in Marvel Age #1000, Deaf Heaven speaks to the importance of grasping hope, even in the most hopeless situations.
