Peter’s school chum Brian Nehring got him a job at Rand Industries. But before Peter can impress his new boss, Dr Maira Osmani-Milton, Rhino has a heart attack. Then someone roofies Peter, twisting his past and fears into a bad trip. When Peter’s investigation into hallucinatory drugs takes him to the Queen’s Cola facility, he finds Hobgoblin guarding the factory.

Before Peter can apprehend the villain, Hobgoblin flies away while Itsy Bitsy puts him in a tizzy. Will Brian and Maira be the latest casualties of the Cola Wars? Can Peter prevent Roderick Kingsley from making his office look even more like Easter Island? Let's grab a can of Queen’s Cola, leap into Amazing Spider-Man #5, and see!

Story

Before Hobgoblin left, Itsy Bitsy told him that someone from Rand informed the Justice Department about his exciting new range of anxiety drinks. Hobgoblin’s drugs have made Peter fear losing the people he loves. As he leaves the Queen’s Cola plant like Bruce Banner left a bottling factory in Rio de Janeiro, Peter gives Brian a call. But Peter’s too late. Hobgoblin’s already yucking his murder yum at Rand Industries.

Joe Kelly's story alternates between Peter, Dr. Maira Osmani-Milton, and Brian Nehring as Hobgoblin attempts to protect his industrial secrets with extreme prejudice. Maira shines as a mother, an easy-going boss, and a caring employer.

After all the people he failed at Ravencroft, Spider-Man gives his all to ensure no additional deaths weigh on his conscience. While Brian may not impress immediately, he earns his place at Rand (and reader’s hearts) in Amazing Spider-Man #5.

Hobgoblin’s spectacular entrance suggests an Ultron-level tragedy, but the characters work together more effectively than the Avengers on the SHIELD helicarrier. Peter demonstrates his ability to think while thwipping and quipping. Amid all the fighting, this fast-paced action thriller is about the importance of protecting the people we care about and never pushing them away.

Art

Pepe Larraz begins Amazing Spider-Man #5 with Rand Enterprises in flames. Hobgoblin descends into the plant-and-tree-filled atrium, driving away workers like the angel sent to guard Eden. Brian clutches his notebook to his chest, cognizant of the secrets he guards. Although wide-eyed, Dr Maira Osmani-Milton never loses her cool, facing down Hobgoblin even as he strangles her.

Marte Gracia surrounds Spider-Man with yellow, orange, and red as he crashes through the skylights. After sheathing his yellow flaming sword, bluish-white energy crackles from Hobgoblin’s hands and red eyes in Amazing Spider-Man #5. Past merges with present as gray characters frame colorful scenes and yellow fire washes across Peter's Black and White memories.

Amid frantic panels, splash pages, double-page spreads, and a raging contest between Black and White, limited color schemes, and loaded palettes, Joe Caramagna thwips uppercase black lettering into dialogue balloons. Words grow bold for inflection, swell, change color, and rarely shrink. Texting with emojis turns narrative boxes blue amid glaring red lights. Sound effects include web-thwipping, glass shattering, and Brian bonking Hobgoblin. Thanks to Marvel for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Amazing Spider-Man #5 pulses with MCU-level action and drama as Peter draws a line in the sand and Hobgoblin tries to capitalize on people’s inclination to destroy their lives. Hey, if they’re going to worry about things they can’t control, why not make money off their lack of mindfulness?

Ill Vacation Review

Writer: Steve Thompson

Artist & Colorist: Gonzalo Ruggieri

Letterers: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou & Gonzalo Ruggieri

Design & Layout: Gonzalo Ruggieri

Flatter: Eliana Bustamante

Editor: Rebecca Stone

Publisher: Comixology

Price: $6.99

Release Date: June 17, 2025

Bob Backus and Mary Krisztik serve at a US base on Easter Island. When strange lights appear in the night sky, the rest of the soldiers can’t leave quickly enough. Why have their superiors left them behind? And are Bob and Mary alone on Easter Island? Let’s leap into Ill Vacation and find out!

Story

An eyeball hovers in the sky in 1942. Creatures rise from the ocean to stride across the earth. Two British agents escape the cell on the base and observe all this taking place. When strange creatures invade the base, their superiors order Bob and Mary not to attack. Amid the invasion, a giant creature detonates a nuclear blast. A tsunami sweeps across the base, trapping Bob and Mary within.

While all this occurs, two people travel to Easter Island by rowboat. One believes she can stop the situation from escalating. But nothing is what it seems in Ill Vacation.

Art

As Steve Thompson’s story unfolds, Gonzalo Ruggieri reveals Bob and Mary undergoing tests at the Pacific Fleet Headquarters in Hawaii. His relaxed penciling shows the medical staff injecting Bob and Mary. As with the Allies’ prisoners Per and Elvira, duplicity and misdirection occur during the procedure. Bob and Mary are guinea pigs. Instead of building atomic bombs, the doctors are making the warrant officer and airplane mechanic into living weapons.

Colored light streams from Bob and Mary’s heads amid trauma. A giant narwhal flies over the island in Ill Vacation. A duck-man helps the two abandoned soldiers at times. And a plane sprouts legs and chases after a kill squad clad in biohazard suits. Gonzalo Ruggieri’s coloring is as wild, fluorescent, and electrifying as his nightmarish visions.

As the chaos raging on Easter Island threatens to spread across the world, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou and Gonzalo Ruggieri place uppercase black letters in white weather balloons anchored by long strings. Sound effects soar through panels, heightening this atmospheric story about underhanded plots, otherworldly transformations, and the power of love. Thanks to Superfan Promotions and Comixology for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Your greatest weapon is not a gun or bomb. You have the power to create new futures or destroy everyone and everything around you. Ill Vacation ponders the potential effects of experimenting with the unlimited potential of the human mind.

Rating 8/10

P.S. Despite the immersive, imaginative, and thought-provoking story, the low resolution of the review copy strained my eyes. The blurry artwork and lettering made it hard to recognize characters. My review copy was 18.8 MB, while Amazon lists the sale copy as 461.9 MB. Ill Vacation may merit a higher rating.

Be Not Afraid #1 Review

Writer: Jude Ellison S Doyle

Illustrator: Lisandro Estherren

Colorists: Francesco Segala & Gloria Martinelli

Letterer: Simon Bowland

Cover Artists: Jae Lee & June Chung; Reiko Murakami; Abigail Jill Harding; Ariel Olivetti; Javier Pulido

Designer: Madison Goyette

Editors: Caroline Butler, Allyson Gronowitz & Elizabeth Brei

Publisher: Boom! Studios

Price: $4.99

Release Date: June 4, 2025

Cora Rehms is having a baby. It's not something she is looking forward to. Like any would-be mother, Cora feels the burden of carrying a child to term. She dreads the pain of delivery. When her body signals readiness, no one is with her. Can she endure childbirth alone? And will Cora love her child? Let's grab a Bible, leap into Be Not Afraid #1, and find out!

Story

Cora's fear of childbirth proves unnecessary. One moment, her stomach is round and full. Next, Cora's abdomen is flat, and her hips narrow. Instead of clutching an infant to her breast, a toddler appears in the doorway. Her son smiles at her, clad in a shirt and overalls. Jordy walks beside his mother as they leave the room.

Like Cora, the townspeople don't understand Jordy's sudden appearance. Other children keep their distance from Jordy. As Jordy grows, Geraldine Gish takes him under her wing. Sadly, something changes in their relationship. By his teens, the citizens of Enoch fear Jordy in Be Not Afraid #1. And Geraldine wants him to keep away.

Jude Ellison S Doyle's story is a study of fear. It's also a reminder of how easily we can use our abilities to hurt others. Like Charlie X, Jordy doesn't belong in our world. He doesn't respect the boundaries of propriety. And he cannot sympathize with others. Worst of all, Jordy delights in tormenting his mother. As Jordy stands on the brink of manhood in Be Not Afraid #1, Cora wonders how much longer she can live with her son.

Art

Lisandro Estherren takes readers through a closed door to glimpse Cora lying on a bed in a thin, modest dress. When Cora stares down at her flat stomach, her fingers arc like a bird’s feet, and her hair coils like snakes. Young Jordy smiles. His eyes glow beneath a mop of hair as Jordy reaches for her. As Cora leaves the room and departs the cave with her newborn toddler, she may clutch Jordy’s hand. But Cora doesn’t smile in Be Not Afraid #1.

Francesco Segala and Gloria Martinelli adorn Lisandro Estherren’s shadowy, etched art with a limited palette. The colors enhance the depth and atmosphere of lines, shadows, and stippling. Like Cora and young Jordy, the color artists guide us into this remote midwestern town surrounded by waving corn. Beneath swirling storm clouds, Jordy’s dark, distorted figure evokes Reverend Henry Kane from Poltergeist 2. But the curly golden locks on his forehead glow like the sun.

Simon Bowland places Jude Ellison S Doyle's flowing narrative in boxes and the characters' dialogue in white balloons. The uppercase letters in boxes are more stylized than their cousins, but both are easy to read. Words embolden for emphasis, while lowered voices receive smaller, lowercase letters. Bowland carves dark symbols and words into panels to attend acts of kindness and defiance. Thanks to Boom! Studios for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

As children reach high school age, parents often struggle to bridge the gap with their teens' diverging interests. Jude Ellison S Doyle’s flowing, Biblical narrative transforms a fast-paced story about the challenges of one-parent families into a supernatural horror story in Be Not Afraid #1.

Rating 9.5/10

Huge Detective #5 Review

Writer: Adam Rose

Artist: Magenta King & Dalts Dalton

Colorists: Magenta King & Minimone

Letterer: DC Hopkins

Publisher: Titan Comics

Price: $3.99

Release Date: June 11, 2025

Mrs Stubbs raised her son to believe he would become a Huge. Manny seems capable of telepathy, which links him with the Huge. But while Mrs Stubbs appears to love Humanity's giant neighbors, she burns for revenge. Once, she fought for Human acceptance of the Huge. A regrettable accident at the Dollsville theme park in Brobdingnag changed her mind. Mrs Stubbs has a controlling interest in the theme park where her husband and child died. Now, she wants to build Gulliver's World filled with her new and improved Giant Size puppets.

Mrs Stubbs kidnapped Tamaki’s father. The Bobble Man holds the Human detective. Detective Gyant lies with a drill poised above his head. But does any of this even matter with a Huge skeleton hurtling toward Earth’s atmosphere? Let’s put on our seven-league boots, leap into Huge Detective #5, and see!

Story

The Omega Event left Humanity and the Huge at odds. Her mother’s death amid the conflict left Tamaki nursing a grudge and caring for her ailing father. She takes medication to get through each day. Tamaki teamed with a Huge partner she never wanted to investigate the mystery of Belter’s Cave. But when the confrontation awakens Gyant’s hunger for Human flesh, Tamaki urges him to fight the temptation, like a friend encouraging an alcoholic to maintain his sobriety.

Adam Rose packs the converging storylines with action and drama. After learning about Mrs Stubb’s tragic history, Dr Crawford reveals Manny’s past. As Tamaki and Gyant fight for freedom, two events dominate Huge Detective #5. World leaders must either mount a mission to destroy the falling Huge skeleton or let Brobdingnag’s sacred relic fall and hope for the best. And then there is the fragment that broke off and reawakened a volcano in the Philippines. The Huge could help that effort. How the US President reacts to the falling skeleton could prove pivotal to international and interspecies relations.

Art

Magenta King and Minimone color Tamaki and the Bobble Man's scenes red and highlight the characters green. Red dominates the background as a reporter stands before the erupting volcano. Brobdingnag's diplomat sports red hair as he delivers an ultimatum. Gray and muted green evoke Black and White photographs as Dr Crawford relates Manny's past.

Yet yellow, orange, and red clash with green when Mrs Stubbs demonstrates her inhumanity.

Gyant regards his desolate surroundings with a stony visage. Magenta King shows a white bird alight on Gyant's collar. After clasping her father's shoulder, Tamaki takes the bird's place in Huge Detective #5. As the detectives race against time to prevent a tragedy, fighters reach the descending skeleton on a starry night. As the skeleton hurtles toward a yellow and ocher patchwork landscape, the planes set off in pursuit.

DC Hopkins fills dialogue balloons and narrative boxes with uppercase black and red letters in Huge Detective #5. The words grow bold for intonation and Huge speech. People's thoughts fill cloudy balloons, while sound effects reveal the difficulties of forgiveness and the necessity to protect those we love.

Lowercase letters in yellow narrative boxes wrap up this series that celebrates our love of old songs, classic literature, and fairy tales. Dalts Dalton's Silver Age art and vibrant coloring provide a glimpse into the future that gives one Huge and one Human a happy ending. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

As Huge Detective #5 grapples with the conflict between patriotism and diplomacy, Humans struggle to let go of the painful past, even if the future seems to promise more of the same.

Rating 8.8/10

Geiger TP Vol 3 Review

Creators: Geoff Johns & Gary Frank

Writer: Geoff Johns

Artist: Gary Frank

Penciler: Paul Pelletier

Inker: Andrew Hennessy

Colorists: Brad Anderson & John Kalisz

Letterer: Rob Leigh

Editor: Brian Cunningham

Designer: Steve Blackwell

Publisher: Image Comics

Price: $16.99

Release Date: June 4, 2025

After their battle with the Electrician, Barney feels down. Geiger and Nate wonder if the two-headed wolf will carry on. That night, Barney abandons their camp to protect and befriend a zebra. Geiger doesn’t want another mouth to feed. But Nate adores the three-eyed foal. So, the living nuclear reactor is responsible for four people. Can Geiger find the other glowing man like him and discover a cure for his condition? Or will the people hunting Geiger find them first? Let's grab some Boron dust, leap into Geiger TP Vol 3, and find out!

Story

Geoff Johns begins with a fight as Goldfield and other warriors try to capture Geiger. These knights regard Nate as a traitor. The Nuclear Knight understands the need to bring order to the post-apocalyptic wasteland. The warlords of Las Vegas safeguard civilization. They want the Glowing Man to unleash his immense power on their enemies. Before Nate sought redemption from Geiger, the Nuclear Knight served the warlords. Now, Nate protects isolated communities with his new friends in Geiger TP Vol 3.

As Geiger, Nate, Barney, and Zigzag travel to Lewistown, Montana, they find Nightcrawlers attacking people. When they realize the children donned radiation suits and risked the giant ants to find books, Geiger feels a link with them. Yet, the children also remind him of the family he lost. Before he became the Glowing Man, Geiger loved sharing his love of reading with his son and daughter. Like Geiger, these children’s parents mourn a world they can never have again. Unlike him, the community’s leaders disdain books.

After continuing Geiger's adventures with three recent issues, Geiger TP Vol 3 revisits the Glowing Man's origins. The two-issue story explains why the Russian bombs that decimated cities spread their mutation-producing radiation across the continental United States. Like the parents who fear the consequences of reading books, the Geiger: Ground Zero miniseries reminds us how often we perpetuate our ancestors' flawed legacies.

Art

While Nate cuts and thrusts with his sword, Geiger’s glowing skeleton slices through plate armor or breaks glass faceplates. As Geiger wields his control rods like truncheons, and the two-headed wolf bites and claws, the three-eyed Zebra foal watches. Paul Pelletier and Andrew Hennessy portray Geiger's battles with giant ants, repressive leaders, and the knights who seek Geiger as a wedding gift for the Queen and New King of Las Vegas.

Then, a Russian immigrant aids a military leader in Geiger TP Vol 3. Gary Frank peels away a quarter-decade to show Tariq Geiger’s fragile form before the radiation healed him. The art reveals why the military leader hunts the Glowing Man and, like Nate, how the Russian strives to relieve Geiger’s suffering.

Brad Anderson and John Kalisz lavish loaded palettes on Geiger TP Vol 3. Perhaps the brightest colors adorn a meeting in Las Vegas as the corpulent queen holds court. The warlords adopt iconic costumes from decades and centuries past. Subdued colors portray green-clad soldiers pursuing a glowing green skeleton through the gray night. Lamps illuminate the darkness as Tariq reads to his son and daughter. Sunlight helps a community glow when Geiger and Nate escort their children home.

Rob Leigh places uppercase black letters in dialogue balloons that grow bold for intonation, enlarge for volume, and shrink for lowered voices. Intense emotions distort balloons, while colorful dialogue amplifies the action. Sound effects help us hear the Nightcrawlers’ clicking, Zigzag’s braying, knights battling, control rods hissing, and a cherished memory incinerating. Script excerpts, process art, and covers close out Geiger TP Vol 3. Thanks to Image Comics and Ghost Machine for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

The Glowing Man is a dangerous man to know. Befriending him also has its perils. Painful memories propel Geiger on a desperate hunt for a cure in Geiger TP Vol 3. Yet his strange condition has allowed the morose man to survive and protect others from gangs, scavengers, and the monsters that terrorize the American wasteland.

Rating 9.6/10

First Freedom: The Story of Opal Lee and Juneteenth Preview

It's easy to take our freedoms for granted. But it's also easy to not understand how we got here. My grandfather grew up in an era when Blacks and Whites used different restrooms and water fountains, and sat in different sections on streetcars. Juneteenth is a new holiday to me. But it has a long history.. I look forward to learning about how Juneteenth became a federal holiday in this upcoming graphic novel.

Here's all the info from Oni Press:

Oni Press, the multiple Eisner and Harvey Award-winning publisher of groundbreaking comics and graphic novels since 1997, is proud to announce a powerful new graphic novel – First Freedom: The Story of Opal Lee and Juneteenth – coming to comic shop and bookstores in February of 2026, 46 years after Juneteenth was first recognized as a statewide holiday by the state of Texas, and five years since its formal establishment as a federal holiday.

Charting the incredible journey and relentless courage of activist Opal Lee—known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth—to bring recognition of American Emancipation from local advocacy to state capitols all the way to the White House, this biographical graphic novel pairs acclaimed journalist, producer, and author Angélique Roché (My Super Hero is Black) with a trio of talented artists—including Alvin Epps (I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005: A Graphic Novel), Bex Glendining (the upcoming Indigo Port), and rising star Millicent Monroe – who each chronicle a different interlocking chapter in Ms. Lee’s own arduous life alongside the true struggles and travails of the millions of Black Americans who lived the reality of the first Juneteenth celebrations at the close of the Civil War in 1865 and the aftermath that would follow their children for generations to come.

From the 1860s to Ms. Opal’s childhood home and onward through her years as a teacher to receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2024, First Freedom: The Story of Opal Lee and Juneteenth seeks to give readers an insight into the history behind one of the most recognized figures in the creation of America’s newest federal holiday, Juneteenth.

“It doesn’t take much to see that the great-granddaughter of a runaway slave, born into Jim Crow and segregation, taught through integration and grew to be the grandmother of Juneteenth, has a story that needs to be told,” said author Angélique Roché. “All too often, the stories of African Americans and our communities are filled with devastating gaps and missing moments, from the ordinary to the extraordinary. The story of Ms. Opal Lee fills those gaps, highlighting everyday struggles and the critical moments between emancipation – that first freedom – and the hard-fought freedoms won since. From a farm in Texarkana, Arkansas, to the White House, Ms. Opal's life represents not just the power of one person but the collective strength of our movements.

“We’re honored to bring Opal Lee’s extraordinary story to life for a new generation through the creative vision of Angélique Roché, Alvin Epps, Bex Glendining, and Millicent Monroe,” said Polarity CEO David Steward II. “‘First Freedom’ illustrates how one voice can inspire meaningful change, chronicling Opal’s journey from grassroots activism to national recognition, elevating Juneteenth beyond a historical milestone. The graphic novel serves as a powerful testament to resilience, justice, and freedom—a narrative that embodies the values we aspire to share with our Oni readers.”

“While Ms Opal is known as a champion for Juneteenth and what it stands for, her lifetime commitment to service touches every aspect of her life,” added Roché. “From motherhood to the classroom, serving as a deaconess in her church, starting and maintaining a community food bank, breaking ground on an urban farm, providing educational scholarships, and creating opportunities for affordable housing, Ms. Opal shows how we can move mountains in the pursuit of ensuring freedom for all people, one step at a time.”

Born in 1926, Opal Lee grew up in a racially divided America and dedicated her life to overcoming the obstacles presented therein. A lifelong educator, Ms. Opal has been a community activist all her life, and would join the movement to celebrate and commemorate Juneteenth not just as a holiday, but as a symbol of comprehensive freedom for all people. Ms. Opal’s life personifies the resilience that leads to lasting change in the hearts and minds of people. As the Grandmother of Juneteenth says, “If people can be taught to hate, they can be taught to love.”

Discover the life of an extraordinary woman’s path through contemporary American history and the rarely told true story of the Juneteenth holiday itself in First Freedom: The Story of Opal Lee and Juneteenth – coming in February 2026  from Oni Press. For more updates on Oni Press, visit them on Bluesky, Facebook, and Instagram,

The incredible journey of activist Opal Lee—known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth—is brought to life in this biographical graphic novel that not only explores Opal’s remarkable path, but the history of the holiday of Juneteenth itself.

A lifelong educator, Ms. Opal has been a community activist all her life, and would take on the movement to celebrate and commemorate Juneteenth not just as a holiday, but as a symbol of comprehensive freedom for all people.

Ms. Opal’s life personifies the fight for everyday freedom that leads to lasting change. As the Grandmother of Juneteenth says, “There is so much more to do.”

Written by acclaimed journalist, producer, and author Angélique Roché (My Super Hero is Black) and drawn by a trio of talented artists—including Alvin Epps (I Survived Hurricane Katrina, 2005: A Graphic Novel), Bex Glendining (the upcoming Indigo Port), and rising star Millicent Monroe—The First Freedom: The Story of Opal Lee and Juneteenth promises to illuminate the life of a singular woman and the history of a momentous holiday, with additional back matter providing more insights into Juneteenth’s history and the making of this graphic novel tribute.
