The Dark Web caught Spider-Man, the X-Men, Ms. Marvel, Mary Jane, and Black Cat when Madelyne Pryor unleashed demons upon the living and brought Limbo into our world. Now, as seen in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1, she struggles to rule Limbo responsibly. Her job's made more difficult by the massacre in Hellfire Gala #1, as she gives mutants sanctuary from their persecutors.
Dark X-Men #1 continues Madelyne's story. Dreams of Limbo haunt her. Yet she awakens to a scarier reality. With her lover Alex Summers by her side, she ventures into our world to rescue those fleeing the mutant haters' wrath.
Steve Foxe--who wrote the miniseries All Eight Eyes for Dark Horse Comics and one of the most memorable stories in Creepshow Volume 1--delivers a mature and satisfying story. Despite its darker tone, I enjoyed this entry in the Fall Of X storyline.
As with most X-Men books, the tiny lettering applies. Jonas Scharf's haunting art looks painted rather than drawn, and Frank Martin's rich coloring warms characters and enlivens scenes. Information sheets introduce the story, show a text exchange on a cellphone, and provide insight into Orchis' operations.
The backup story gives us a look at life inside the Limbo Embassy. The fanciful art suits this lighthearted short story. While Hallows Eve visited Chasm in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1, Madelyne visits him in this story. If you followed the Dark Web event, you'll understand Ben Reilly's reaction.
