Dr Leonoid Rostov is a brilliant scientist who yearns to change the world. His first attempt in 1993 to correct the mistakes of history crashes and burns, thanks to a cut in government funding. His second attempt to alter established history in 2005 also gets cut short. Is the third time the charm? Let's leap into Gateway Pioche and find out!

Story

Muki's parents taught her the value of hard work. That motto guided her choices when she made three others equally driven to excellence at Stanford University in California in 2010. Larry Kowalski Jr is a former High School Valedictorian with no athletic skills but a full-ride scholarship to Stanford. Judith Anderson has supermodel looks, but her family history often infects her attitude. Abdul Farad, the gifted son of university professors, absorbs information like a sponge.

The four friends met at a concert featuring the greatest bands in rock music. In 2016, they are graduating with master's degrees in two fields of study. But Muki throws a wrench in their plans when she suggests they set their job offers aside, hit Las Vegas, and invest their winnings on a cross-country ramble. There will always be time to work 9 to 5, she argues. They deserve a break from their nose-to-the-grindstone approach to the last six years!

Although the friends don't realize it, people await them in Las Vegas. These people believe that what happens in Vegas should stay in Vegas. And farther away, someone else is waiting for them. Dr Leonoid Rostov has waited eleven years since General McCulloch shut down his project. He needs volunteers to help him reshape the world. Accomplished and driven people like Muki, Larry, Judith, and Abdul might fit the bill.

In Gateway Pioche, Jeff Dawson and Larry Welch take the four friends on the trip of a lifetime. Muki, Larry, Judith, and Abdul will discover the truth about themselves, Dr Rostov, and the history taught in books. Abdul's irrepressible humor will get on his friends' nerves. Judith will grow increasingly irritated by everyone and everything. Larry will try to be a team leader, yet a disturbing event in his past haunts him. Muki often plays peacemaker, soothing her friends and holding the group together.

Jeff Dawson and Larry Welch’s novel sparkles with humor, pathos, conflict, and technological marvels. The story reminds us that hard work and dedication can forge us into capable people, but a dishonorable focus can twist our character and warp our worldviews. After the excitement of the group's travels across the United States and their journeys through time, Gateway Pioche questions the ethics of attempting to change the world around us. Yet, we do it every day in small ways. We band together in groups to effect change on a larger scale. We argue and fight to alter aspects of society, even though we know that change always brings winners and losers. If we had Dr Rostov’s invention, would it be so wrong to change the past? What if we could save people from dying? What if we could prevent world wars? Muki, Larry, Judith, and Abdul don't think that would be wrong. How about you?
