When Jonny Double sidelined Cameron Chase, Simon Baz encouraged her to accept a job transfer. But Cameron wanted to stay in Coast City. After putting her marriage to Jo Mullein behind her, Cameron yearned to investigate the strange events occurring in Evergreen, Nevada. Instead, she sat in her apartment while Simon got a new partner at the Department of Extranormal Operations.
Now, Jo has returned to Coast City. And like before, the woman from Evergreen has blown up Cameron's life. In addition to bringing a comatose friend with her, a green light surrounds Jo. When Jonny Double told Hector Hammond where he might find Cameron's ex, the green light helped Jo survive Keith Kenyon's attack. It also helped Jo sustain her comatose friend's life. Now that Hal Jordan has awakened, will he complicate Cameron’s life as much as Jo? And can Cameron take the fight to the man who has put all of them in his crosshairs? Let’s slip on our gold rings, leap into Absolute Green Lantern #12, and see!
Story
Jo Mullein never belonged anywhere. Unlike Hal Jordan and Cameron Chase, she has bounced from place to place. Cameron even refused a transfer that could have furthered her career to remain in Coast City. After Jo returned to her life and turned her comfortable apartment into a blood-splattered crime scene, Cameron had to flee Coast City. Now, she's hiding out with Simon Baz and Agent Kari Limbo in the basement of Ding-Dong Daddy’s Auto Repair in Harrison. She’s even afraid to venture upstairs for fear of contracting tetanus. But all that changes when Hector Hammond finds them again.
As Obsidian crashes into Cameron’s off-the-books safehouse, Al Ewing’s fast-paced story follows all the Earth-bound action in Absolute Green Lantern #12. Despite how he treats others, the medical staff monitoring Hector Hammond still cares about him. And as Hector directs Obsidian using the Mento Device, even the Voice of Oa tries to communicate with him. But like the Weaponeers of Qard, who channel the black energy, Hector prefers dominating others over enlightenment.
Perhaps Jo's father was right about Hal Jordan's inability to know what he wants. Still, Hal no longer teases people who seek enlightenment. Likewise, Cameron lowers her defenses, revealing her concern for the woman she tried to push out of her life. Yet as Hector Hammond puts the fugitives through a crucible of pain, Jo Mullein emulates her ex-wife and refuses to flee from a seemingly impossible situation. In doing so, Jo reveals that more than happenstance and gold contributed to wielding the green power in Absolute Green Lantern #12.
Art
As the Voice of Oa speaks to Hector Hammond, the white circle against black evokes Cameron holding her wedding band before her face. Encased in Black goo, Todd Rice's face evokes Abin Sur's as Obsidian dispenses Hector Hammond's judgment. In Jo's memory, a white glow suffuses the graveyard as Hal speaks about why he lingers in limbo. Then he looks up as a fighter jet flies over Evergreen. Yet at their unsafe house, Cameron betrays no fear as she protects the people who have disrupted her life.
As Jahnoy Lindsay, Sid Kotian, and Pressy lavish their artistry on Absolute Green Lantern #12, Hector Hammond wears red as he gives way to anger. While wearing the purple Mento Device, Hector sits at a green desk as he ignores the Voice of the Green Lantern. In the damaged auto repair facility, a man who hides from his reflection searches drawers beneath the workbenches as yellow light streams down on him. Yet black and white speak most powerfully, linking two women who, despite years of separation, still have feelings for each other.
Uppercase black letters inhabit white balloons and boxes. The letters grow bold for intonation, swell for raised voices, and shrink for lowered voices. A colored border around a balloon or box evokes the power the character wields or suggests future possibilities. Yet like the voice of Oa, Todd Rice speaks white letters into black fields. Lucas Gattoni's sound effects accentuate Obsidian's rage and Cameron's quick thinking, as Jo Mullein recovers something she thought she had lost. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.
Final Thoughts
While absolute power corrupts absolutely in the DC Universe, everything works differently in the Absolute Universe. Lacking a teacher, the Humans who wield the power of Oa discover different ways to help others in Absolute Green Lantern #12.
