Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #1 Spotlight

Kamala Khan is many things: daughter, Muslim, student, and friend. She's a Pakistani-American. Her smarts enabled her to work as an intern alongside Peter Parker at Oscorp.

What else? Oh yes! The Terrigen Mist activated her latent Inhuman gene during the Infinity event, transforming her into the Mighty Morphing Ms. Marvel. So, she's a superhero too!

As a superhero, she's been an Avenger, a Champion, and an Inhuman. After she got killed defending Mary Jane Watson from the Emissary, the X-Men detected a latent Mutant gene and brought her back to life. So now, even though her mutant abilities have yet to manifest, she's also a Mutant.

Is it any wonder Kamala's not sure where she belongs in Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #1?

This dilemma haunts her. When she awakens, she's plagued by another. It's time for her to leave her parents and move to Empire State University. She's only attending a summer program and will return home when it's over. Still, Orchis, the organization behind the massacre at the X-Men Hellfire Gala, is the program sponsor!

Leaving her parents behind will be hard enough. Finding a new support group may prove difficult. But how about living a lie? She's a mutant, but she can't tell anyone because everyone hates mutants now.

Despite an overlong dream sequence and the focus on Kamala's anxieties, Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #1 is a fun story with appealing art and vibrant coloring. As for the tiny lower-case lettering, there's a lot of it, so plan on a long read. Still, the story left me wondering what happened next.

Last Wednesday, Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #1 came out. Co-written by Iman Vellani, who portrays Ms. Marvel in the Disney+ series, the issue could become a collectible. If this Spotlight aroused your interest, you may want to snag your favorite cover before it's gone.

Kamala Khan may not know where she belongs, but how about you? Where do you belong? Thankfully, the answer's obvious. It's New Comic Book Day! You belong at your local comic shop!

I couldn't find a preview at Comic Book Dispatch, but you can preview the interior art at Previews World website.
