After Jetfire abandoned him, and Optimus Prime and Bumblebee destroyed his life’s work, Genvo died in Ulchtar’s arms. As Starscream, Ulchtar became Megatron’s hand of death. When Megatron’s dominance grew oppressive, Starscream shook off his control and became the leader of the Decepticons on Earth. Then Soundwave challenged his leadership and threw him into an active volcano. Once again, someone made Starscream into a tool. Humans from Destro’s MARS corporation have shackled him to a HISS tank. Will Starscream enjoy rockin’ and rollin’ on his tracked treads? Let's recharge our Energon batteries, leap into Transformers #14, and discover Starscream’s transformative journey!

Story

Once, a guard on Cybertron called him a dumbass techno pup. But Ulchtar cherished life in all its forms. Now, Starscream worships himself. His first instinct is to kill those who are different or fail to revere him. Starscream stares down at the HISS tank that replaced his legs, sharing Private Clayton's opinion of him. The Humans have made him into an abomination! But Starscream can’t kill Horton and his Human crew. Their deaths will trigger explosive devices. Then Starscream notices that Private Martin has been sketching him. Finally, an artist yearns to capture his majesty!

Like Starscream, Horton yearns for greatness. His father was worshipped as a Real American Hero. MARS has relegated Horton to salvage duty. Still, Destro is always looking for the next great innovation. His Battle Android Troopers haven’t performed flawlessly in field tests. In Daniel Warren Johnson’s story, Horton’s Frankensteined Transformer-HISS Tank could help Destro keep Cobra Commander’s Energon supply flowing and secure the promotion Horton wants.

Yet even without his legs and shackled by Humans, Starscream proves resilient. The Autobots destroyed his life, but Megatron made Starscream a slave. Soundwave threw him into a volcano. Still, Starscream survived. This buoys his confidence. So when he meets others who could serve his needs, Starscream mixes truth and lies to bind them to his service. Ulchtar’s youth was filled with wonder. But his worldview was fragile and could not withstand the rigors of reality. Starscream’s life is one of resilience. In Transformers #14, Starscream seeks to improve his situation. His undaunted optimism transforms an otherwise debilitating defeat into an inspiring triumph.

Art

A clockwork cascade of images showcases Starscream’s conversion into a Transformer-Tank. Yet the fire from Horton’s lighter forges a link with Razz welding Starscream to the HISS tank. As Starscream raises his arms in horror, Horton slaps Clayton’s back with such force that it knocks the glasses off his stunned face. Starscream slams his fist into the ground, sending the MARS salvage crew flying. Yet the giant hand halts above a Human silhouette. Private Martin raises his sketchbook like Moses offered his work for inspection. The Human's sketch provokes more violence. Yet a cat cooly regards Starscream’s tantrum, evoking Optimus Prime's accidental killing of a deer.

Amid the surrounding greenery, the red and yellow that fill the background in closeups hint at the fire from which Starscream’s new life is forged. As Mike Spicer lavishes vibrant colors on Jason Howard’s evocative and exciting art in Transformers #14, he softens Starscream’s violent memories with pastels. Purple and gray shade falls on Starscream's head, linking him with the Humans and their HISS tank. Yet as Horton expresses his dominance within Starscream’s crushing grip, his red hair and beard link him with his giant captive.

Rus Wooton fills white dialogue balloons with black uppercase letters and the Transformers’ rectangular ones with italicized words. The letters embolden for intonation, occasionally swell or change color for raised voices, and rarely shrink. The red sound of a rescue victim attacking its protector elicits Starscream’s laughter in Transformers #14, while a red cry for help prompts him to investigate. Yet the sound of Private Martin’s sketching echoes Megatron undergoing mass conversion to become a gun in Starscream’s hands. Thanks to Image Comics, Skybound Entertainment, and Hasbro for providing a copy for review.

Final Thoughts

After Soundwave left Starscream in a volcano like Obi-Wan abandoned Anakin on Mustafar, a MARS team scurries in like Jawas and puts restraining bolts on the Decepticon. But the Humans discover that Starscream isn't as docile as a protocol droid, as the aftermath of Optimus Prime's actions rocks the Cybertronians' adoptive planet in Transformers #14.

Rivers Of London: Stray Cat Blues TP Preview

Before they became bestselling novelists, Ben Aaronovitch and Andrew Cartmel worked on Doctor Who. While Andrew Cartmel oversaw the Seventh Doctor's tenure, Ben Aaronovitch brought Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart back to TV screens in his story Battlefield. It was a terrific story involving King Arthur and magic. (It also reunited actors Jean Marsh and Nicholas Courtney, who had worked together on the First Doctor serial The Daleks Masterplan).

Ben Aaronovitch helped keep Doctor Who fandom alive after the BBC canceled the TV series by continuing the Seventh Doctor's adventures through Virgin's New Adventures novels. Andrew Cartmel also contributed to Virgin Publishing's Doctor Who novels. His first entry was Cat's Cradle: Warhead. Andrew Cartmel delivers a terrific story about magic and cats in this graphic novel based on Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers Of London series.

Here's all the info from Titan Comics:

Pippin Dale has a new job. She has returned to San Francisco to work as a bellhop. The Maynard Hotel welcomes witches, wizards, and otherworldly beings, but that doesn't make it a safe workplace. The guests like to show off, and some of their spells are dangerous. Worse, someone is invading the guest rooms and robbing them while they sleep. Can Pip survive the rigors of the Maynard Hotel? Let's leap on our broomsticks, swoop into Welcome To The Maynard #1, and find out!

Story

While Pip is troubled by San Francisco’s recent decline, the Maynard Hotel is a hive of magical activity. As the doorman ushers her into the lobby, witches and birds fly through the three-story atrium, and elephants cavort above her head. Unfortunately, Pip neglects to mention that she is a new employee and not a guest. So, when the assistant manager demands to know why she didn't enter through the staff entrance, Pip covers for Boots, another kindly bellhop who has taken her in hand. After a quick uniform change, she is ready for Boots to show her around. Pip must learn her duties quickly in Welcome To The Maynard #1 because she will be the sole bellhop on staff tomorrow.

Boots sympathizes with Pip, who has endured great struggles in her life. Despite her youth, her mother has passed away, and Pip never learned her father’s identity. Her mother was a Halfie and passed on her partial magical heritage to Pip. For all she knows, her father could have been a full-on Mage. But Pip can’t tell any of this to her partner, who has no magical abilities and couldn't see The Maynard if she stood before it. After a day filled with duties like pushing a luggage cart filled with cats for a witch who travels to her room on a broomstick, Pip tells her partner she works at Motel 6. But that's not the only secret Pip keeps from her roommate in Welcome To The Maynard #1.

James Robinson conjures a host of colorful characters for his story, such as the bartender Ray, the manager Margot Rathbone, and the uniform attendant Maggie, who alternates between a talking magpie and a Human witch. As Pip struggles to ground the airships of arriving guests, ferries their luggage to their rooms, and wrangles pets back into their travel containers, she keeps her eyes open. Pip knows a cat burglar is terrorizing the magical guests at the Maynard, and she is determined to catch the thief!

Art

J Bone brings an old-timey sensibility to James Robinson’s modern story with rectangular panels bordered by white space. Welcome To The Maynard #1 opens with a cat burglar sneaking into a guest room to open a wall safe hidden behind a painting. When the guests awaken, the black-clad burglar repulses their spells and departs as smoke rises from their still bodies. As the Transamerica Pyramid rises in the distance, Pip rides past the trash-filled streets on a cable car and walks through an adult entertainment district. Then, the buildings seem to separate. But instead of revealing Sirius Black's family home, Pip sees a fairytale carriage drawn by unicorns and a guest arriving on a flying carpet as a giant sculpted bird crowns the elegant statues and architectural details of the impressive façade.

Ian Herring adorns J Bone’s art with a restrained palette that helps the foreground and primary characters shine while lightly coloring backgrounds with pastels, gray, or white. Pip’s gray hair hints at her difficult upbringing as Boots opens a green door with a port hole. She emerges wearing a red and yellow uniform in keeping with the Magical Monopoly Game sensibility of the Roaring Twenties style hotel. Pip returns home after her first day to a purple-and-blue apartment. While her partner reclines on the couch with a bowl of popcorn, Pip remembers a surreptitious meeting beneath orange and yellow lanterns in Chinatown.

Jim Campbell spell-casts black letters into white dialogue balloons and yellow narrative boxes. The letters embolden for intonation, swell for volume, change color for emphasis, and turn gray for lowered voices instead of shrinking. White block letters denote time and location, while sound effects help us hear a cat burglar open a safe and leave a room, and Pip tackle a thief amid ravens and pixies while dragons and witches fly above San Francisco in Welcome To The Maynard #1. Thanks to Dark Horse Comics for providing a copy for review.

Final Thoughts

Pippin Dale's troubled past gives her a philosophical view of life. While Pip makes friends with the magical hotel staff, she must be on her best behavior to avoid incurring the wrath of the strict management. Pip must keep calm and carry on as if the guests are in no danger while she protects them from being robbed, injured, or killed by a teleporting thief in Welcome To The Maynard #1.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #26 Review

Release Date: November 20, 2024

Miles Morales has a new suit. The thin fabric sports the latest Wakandan technology without impeding Spider-Man’s agility and regulates the venom energy that keeps his vampirism at bay. The only drawback? He can't unleash his venom energy in one massive blast. The Black Panther’s gift is just the first step in Miles’ journey toward a cure, but Vulture isn’t waiting for Miles to regain his humanity. Adrian Toomes wants his granddaughter back, and this Bird Of Prey won’t stop until he clutches Miles in his claws. Can Spider-Man repulse the Vulture in his weakened, regulated state? Let's slip into our Vibranium nano-mesh suits, leap into Miles Morales: Spider-Man #26, and find out!

Story

Misty Knight cares about her intern. That's why she enlisted the Black Panther's aid. Still, she wants to set boundaries. Miles put her on hold to talk with Tiana, then invited his girlfriend inside her garage without requesting permission. But the Vulture's attack brings the magnitude of Miles' complicated life home to Misty. Rabble's fixation on Spider-Man left his home in ruins and nearly killed his family. Now, the Vulture wants to take her intern down. Like Rabble, the Vulture trashes her garage and may kill her amid his savage attack on Spider-Man.

In Miles Morales: Spider-Man #26, the Vulture grabs Spider-Man and flies away. But the Vulture doesn't carry Miles far because he's anxious to kill this pest and rebuild his relationship with Tiana. Miles tries to reason with Adrian but can't say anything Tiana's grandfather wants to hear. How could he? Miles is a child. Worse, he's a thief who pretends to be a do-gooder!

Miles may be the hero of Cody Ziglar’s story, but Tiana Toomes puts her stamp on Miles Morales: Spider-Man #26. After all the problems with her parents, Tiana craved stability, but her grandfather fed her lies. She ripped Adrian Toomes’ heart out when they parted ways, but he can’t blame her because she’s family. So Miles, the outsider, becomes Adrian’s target.

The Vulture prides himself on caring for his family. But as with Magneto, anyone outside his flock doesn’t matter. With age comes wisdom, but that doesn’t mean others will embrace your truth. While her grandfather loved her, Adrian’s controlling protectionism left Tiana unfulfilled. She found the stability she sought with Miles. Her grandfather, who should dig his claws into his roost and watch her fly, wants to drag her back to his nest again. And Adrian will kill anyone who prevents him from sustaining her on his activities and ideologies.

Art

While Miles wants to talk, the Vulture intends to fight. As long as Adrian remains fixated on his goal, he takes Miles to the cleaners. But things get complicated when the destruction he unleashes endangers his granddaughter. So, Adrian swoops in to grab Miles and flies toward the moon. The combatants show no more regard for a construction crane than James Bond in Casino Royale. When they alight on a roof, Miles tries to reason with Adrian. But the more Miles talks, the more violent Adrian gets. Miles' venom-energy-fueled attacks shatter the rooftop, while the Vulture follows Deadpool’s playbook by flinging razor-sharp weapons.

Bryan Valenza lavishes bright hues on Federico Vicentini’s explosive art in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #26. The red on Miles’ new costume links him with Misty Knight and Tiana Toomes. The purple ties him to the Black Panther. There's an eerie resonance in this association between the Spectacular Undead Spider-Man and the King Of The Dead, while the yellow power of the sun courses through Miles' high-tech suit. Just as red opposes green on the color wheel, Miles and the Vulture battle each other for the fate of Tiana. So, Adrian's red-plumed granddaughter pushes Miles aside to oppose the green Vulture and show how far she has come.

Cory Petit thwips black uppercase letters into white dialogue balloons. He shares Miles' thoughts with white letters in red narrative boxes. The delicate font emboldens for inflection, swells for raised voices, and rarely shrinks. Energetic sound effects help us hear rapid-fire feathers, steel beams breaking, a collapsing roof burying someone alive, and the hum as venom energy builds toward maximum intensity. Thanks to Marvel Comics for providing a copy for review.

Final Thoughts

The Black Panther wants to heal Miles. But in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #26, the Vulture is hurting. Like Rabble, Adrian Toomes wants his family back. As Spider-Man stole the relationship Adrian cherished, Vulture won't stop until he has killed the interloper who left him bereft.
