Dan Jurgens on The Bat-Man First Knight & Second Knight

Many authors have explored Gotham City's rich history. Recently, Dan Watters' Batman: Dark Patterns series spoke to Gotham's origins and a defining event that shaped Gotham in the present day. At the 2025 San Diego Comic-Con, Dan Jurgens shared his thoughts on how Gotham could have endured the Great Depression. Wouldn't it be interesting, he mused, if Batman had been around in 1939? It would be a very different Batman. Lacking a Batcave, a Batmobile, a staunch supporter like Alfred, and with little or no technology, could Bruce Wayne be Batman?

After producing three issues of The Bat-Man: First Knight in 2024, Dan set his sights on 2025. In The Batman: Second Knight, he introduces Lois Lane. Female reporters are rare in 1939, and she's hungry for a good story. Dan imagined that she would be a good viewpoint character for portraying this male-dominated world. But once again, this would be "Batman Unplugged." Bruce Wayne has no safety net if he runs into trouble. Dan also stressed that the art has a different look than fans may be used to.

In case you missed it, here's a look inside the introductory issue of the 2024 series debut: The Bat-Man: First Knight #1:
