Ben Reilly felt every moment of Cyra’s test thanks to his unspoken clone thing with Peter Parker. So, he impersonates Peter Parker while the genuine article is away. But Ben lacks Peter’s Freaktastic connection to Brian Nehring. And Chasm lacks compassion for the people in Peter’s life.

Norman Osborn has come a long way. Driven by Peter’s faith in him, Norman tries to fill his friend’s shoes while he’s gone. But no one likes Norman’s take on Manhattan’s webslinger. And while all that is going on, Roderick Kingsley is fending off Norman’s legal maneuvers and using Queen’s Cola to move weapons in Tombstone’s streets. Will Ben Reilly and Norman Osborn cost Peter Parker his job, his friendships, and his reputation as a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man? Let's thwip into Amazing Spider-Man #12 and see!

Story

We always feel like we know the right thing to do. Hermes Crenshaw thinks he knows what's going on with Spider-Man, but he rushes to judgment without substantiating his claims. J Jonah Jameson generally tries to do what's right. Sadly, his way of doing what's right often means hurting other people. Although he's working for another corporation now, Ben Reilly's still trying to be like Peter Parker. But he knows he's failing and realizes his time at Rand is beyond limited. And that hurts.

Of all the people in Joe Kelly’s story, Norman theoretically has the best shot at emulating Peter Parker. He knows the man behind the mask. And unlike Roderick Kingsley, Norman wishes to make amends for his acts as a goblin. But life has forged Norman into a predator who exploits weaknesses and crushes the opposition. That mindset has served him well in building a business empire. No matter how hard Norman wants to be good, his past forged him into a fighter who destroys his rivals. And that hurts.

In Amazing Spider-Man #12, New York’s Spider-Society confronts Manhattan's spider-poseur. But instead of attempting an intervention, they adopt Norman's tactics. They try to strongarm the Captain of Industry, who once stole Roderick Kingsley's business empire. And that's going to hurt.

Art

Ed McGuinness and Cliff Rathburn show Norman swinging into action. He hurtles down pages and careers across two-page layouts. Norman thwips by night and corrals herds of paperwork at Oscorp by day. He slips off brick walls and crashes into cars. Norman hurries from one item on his packed itinerary to the next. And whatever he does, and wherever he goes in his trek toward redemption, Norman frowns.

While the paparazzi put Norman’s life under the microscope with their cameras, Brian Nehring tries to peer into Ben Reilly’s soul with his magnifying glass. The Mycoteria clinging to a shard of hovering steel reveal Astrid’s fears, even if it doesn’t justify her goblin-like disdain. But when Brian extends his hand, Ben shrinks from contact, just like Norman Osborn in Amazing Spider-Man #12.

Amid the beige and gray locale, where Tombstone showed Peter the limitations of the legal system, Marcio Menyz and Erick Arciniega's yellow-orange light suggests the sun is setting on Norman's legal maneuvering. A black, white, and red image forms a link with Norman's spider-suit, while a face shaded purple contrasts Norman's strategy with Peter’s when he had to justify his existence. While Norman crouches in a place that has often brought Peter peace, he confronts all the colors that better represent what it means to be a spider-hero.

Joe Caramagna fills white dialogue balloons with black uppercase dialogue. Font size shrinks when business giants whisper. Faint lowercase handprinted lettering reveals Norman's thoughts in irregular white rectangles. Sound effects reveal Norman's pain and his willingness to visit it on anyone who threatens to hurt him in Amazing Spider-Man #12. Thanks to Marvel for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Pain forged Norman Osborn into an unstoppable empire builder. But when a victim from his past returns to judge his progress in turning his life around, Norman realizes he has a long way to go in justifying Peter Parker’s faith in him in Amazing Spider-Man #12.

Saint Seiya: Dark Wing Vol 1 Preview

The great thing about cruises is you get to meet lots of people. Some of them you'd like to spend more time with. Perhaps you might even meet that special person you'd be willing to die for. While this story begins completely differently, it reminds me of another great title from Titan Manga: Working for God in a Godless World Vol 1.

Here's all the info on this exciting new series:

SAINT SEIYA: DARK WING VOL. 1

The Saint Seiya saga continues in a thrilling new manga with Wyvern and the Gold Saints, streaming on Netflix and Crunchyroll.

Shōichirō was just another high school student. Now, he’s Wyvern, one of the dreaded Judges of the Underworld, chosen to battle against the forces of Athena in a war that transcends life and death.

When an unexpected ambush during a school trip sends Shōichirō and his classmates into the land of the dead, they are thrust into a fierce struggle between the gods and their warriors. The mysterious forces of Hades have already begun their assault, and Shōichirō’s destiny is forever altered. But he’s not alone—Cattleya, the reincarnation of Athena herself, fights to defend the living, as shocking truths about a darker conspiracy threaten everything they know.

A thrilling new chapter in the Saint Seiya universe, Saint Seiya: Dark Wing brings the epic clash of gods, warriors, and hidden agendas to new heights. With stunning artwork by Nobuyuki Ueda and a gripping story by Kenji Saito, this spin-off from the legendary Saint Seiya series, created by Masami Kurumada, will leave fans of fantasy and isekai craving more.

Saint Seiya: Dark Wing Vol. 1 is a must-read for fans of the Saint Seiya universe, including the original manga Knights of the Zodiac and its iconic anime adaptations. Whether you’ve watched the classic Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac or its recent Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya movie on Netflix, or enjoyed spin-offs like Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold (available on Crunchyroll) or Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas (streaming on Funimation), you’ll find yourself drawn into a new chapter of this legendary saga.

After battling and teaming up with Deadpool & Daughter to fight Agent Gao, Kwaku Anansi dragged Miles into another fight with Agent Gao and her divine benefactor. Battling gods and former police detectives with holy blades to grind can take a lot out of you. Miles could use some time off to reconnect with his friends and catch up on his schoolwork. But he looks up to Misty Knight. So, when Colleen Wing skips town, and Misty asks her intern to help investigate a crime spree, Miles leaps at the opportunity.

Miles may wear a Wakandan spider-suit, wield a venom sword, and thwip spider-webs, but he's still a teenager. He likes playing sports and games with his friends. Is Miles ready to investigate “cases” with his mentor? And how will he mesh with their new team member? Let's thwip into Miles Morales: Spider-Man #38 and see!

Story

You can’t take lots of heavy hitters off the board without creating a power vacuum, and that’s exactly what the Gang War did. While Tombstone became the new Kingpin, lots of other gangs lost their leaders and/or their territories. Controlling an underworld as big as New York City is a big ask. And Tombstone prioritizes his special projects. When Misty notices that all the thefts occurred at businesses in debt to crime lords, that gives her and Miles a starting point for their investigations.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #38 introduces readers to Lance Lewis, aka White Cat, and his partner Monika Mori, aka Inari. Both boast unique backstories, cultural heritages, and special abilities. But Inari also brings a power pack along with her punch.

Inari controls three kitsune, or supernatural Japanese fox spirits. All three have powers and are formidable foes. White Cat may have claimed that Miles was no fun. But he works alongside Inari's kitsune, who, like Miles, don't mind mixing business with humor.

That’s not the only similarity Miles notices between himself and his opponents in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #38. Cody Ziglar doesn't soft-soap White Cat and Inari's misdeeds. Still, Miles' recent experience with vampirism has taught him that sometimes people do things they don't want to. These experiences help him decide how to treat White Cat and Inari when he meets them again.

Art

While Luigi Zagaria grounds us in Miles’ everyday life, Misty and Felicia’s grand entrance hints at the action to come. As they drive through Brooklyn, Misty summons a holographic model of the evening’s stakeout. Given Inari, Yako, Tenko, and Zenko's heritage, tiny manga caricatures of Misty, Miles, and Black Cat overlay a bird's-eye view of Felicia’s jeep. When Inari dons her white fox mask, she emulates a popular mask worn at Japanese festivals. But while Inari uses her fox spirits to boost her attacks, Misty demonstrates the strength of her bionic arm, Miles thwips while he quips, and Black Cat performs stop-motion acrobatics.

Bryan Valenza lavishes a loaded palette in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #38. While Felicia's earrings link her with Misty's gold arm, her blue jeans link her with Miles. Felicia's red jeep also links her with Miles and Misty's costumes. Yet amid the bright and appealing colors, white forms a theme. From Felicia's hair to Misty and Miles' casual shirts, White Cat's hair and mask, Inari's mask, and the three kitsune, white promises that redemption is always possible.

Cory Petit uses large white block letters to locate us in time and space, and smaller ones to introduce White Cat and Inari. The black uppercase dialogue in white balloons grows bold for intonation and never shrinks. Greater-than and Less-than signs betray one thief's greater commitment to bridging cultural barriers. Sound effects enhance Felicia's exuberant driving, show what Tenko can do with three tails, and remind readers how valuable sipper lids are in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #38. Thanks to Marvel Comics for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Misty Knight already puts Miles in his place. So, when Black Cat joins the team, she makes him feel bottom rung. But after all the teasing and teaching, Miles demonstrates wise and compassionate leadership in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #38.

Rating 9.8/10
