Story

When Agent Rainbow and his troops descend on the Starlight Motel, John Jones takes refuge in the motel bar. After Bridget conspired with the "counselors" to lock him away, another branch of the government besieged the motel. John vows to quit drinking if he survives the assault. Yet while the bartender muses on how something new can overturn your understanding of the world, John makes Molotov cocktails.

 

As John fights for freedom in Absolute Martian Manhunter #10, his former companion struggles to continue living. Agents Lowe and High strive to contain the Green Martian's influence. Tyler, or the spirit within him, captures Bridget in a euphoria as he exerts his influence beyond their home. Yet Agent Rainbow, who leads the assault at the Starlight Motel, claims his experience has made him impervious to influence.

 

In Deniz Camp's story, John and the Green Martian prevented the White Martian from tearing Middleton apart. Yet the town's civil war drew the government's attention. While John argues that success can only come by working together, Agents Rainbow, Lowe, and High believe the FBI Agent is conspiring against the federal government.

 

In a larger sense, John Jones is conspiring against his world. As Marco in the Starlight Bar argues, sometimes people don't know what's good for them. Still, John’s new dark Martian companion intends to keep John's feet firmly on the ground in Absolute Martian Manhunter #10.

 

Art

As John works on the bottles set beside his handguns on the bar, Marco studies the firefly trapped within an overturned glass. A flaming bottle flies past the motel sign, initiating gunfire and explosions. Tracer fire chases John as his Martian shadow races along a nearby wall. Skulls form amid an explosion as John fires his pistols while running. Soldiers wearing steel helmets and wielding swords and rifles fight and die. Bullets rain down from a helicopter skirting the top of the swaying palm trees.

 

Javier Rodríguez's fluorescent colors recall when Americans' attempts to cast off the shackles of the past clashed with their leaders' intention to police the world. Agent Rainbow's long hair flows on unseen air currents like the words carried by the smoke surrounding Bridget and Tyler in Absolute Martian Manhunter #10. As the battle-hardened soldier operates his strip-fed machine gun, he kneels upon the heads of his victims. While Agent Rainbow speaks of when he began his career, Agent Lowe and High's clothing and the interior design of their control room evoke an earlier era.

 

Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou places uppercase black letters in cream dialogue balloons and boxes. Lowercase letters suggest lowered voices, while enlarged uppercase words deform balloons. White letters fill dark backgrounds and dripping splotches, as the barrage of sound effects recalls the smell of napalm in the morning. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

 

Final Thoughts

John Jones fights for his life at the Starlight Motel. Yet the FBI Agent also fights for everyone's right to think their own thoughts, rather than accept whatever the gatekeepers tell them in Absolute Martian Manhunter #10.

Story

As the women hang from the seat backs, they distract themselves by celebrating each other’s accomplishments. While they try to reach safety, they muse on the dangerous situations they’ve survived. It’s not every day that a giant killer robot attacks them. Still, as they make their escape, Lois and Mary Jane ponder how dangerous their lives are.

 

In DC/Marvel: Superman/Spider-Man #1: The World's Finest, Lois and Mary Jane's boyfriends battle a Sentinel. Yet the women wonder why they have chosen the lives they lead. The perilous situations they have endured have become a metaphor for why they have opted for an extraordinary life. Superman and Spider-Man feel a duty to protect others. Yet they also enjoy what they do. Likewise, Lois and Mary Jane realize that they’ve elevated their own careers by living on the edge.

 

In Tom King's action-packed story, Lois and Mary Jane don't have superpowers. Yet they want to help their men protect the people trapped on the fragile bridge. Superman and Spider-Man are too busy combating the giant Sentinel to step back and strategize. The women may be standing on the sidelines. Still, in DC/Marvel: Superman/Spider-Man #1: The World's Finest, Lois Lane and Mary Jane become participants in the battle by pondering how they can help their men.

 

Art

In Jim Lee and Scott Williams’ detailed art, the ladies cling to the handrails, while the rear window reveals the danger they face. Webbing extends from red gloved hands, affixing to the front windows, suggesting that forging ahead is safer than retreating. Lois and Mary Jane share the spotlight as they climb toward safety, while the webbing bunched around Spider-Man's hands contrasts with the severed suspension cables. Superman distracts the Sentinel as the ladies climb. Then Spider-Man rejoins the fray.

 

Alex Sinclair lavishes a palette of rich, nuanced colors on DC/Marvel: Superman/Spider-Man #1: The World’s Finest. The yellow in Superman’s chest shield contrasts with the Sentinel’s gold face. But while Superman protects everyone, the Sentinel protects communities from diversity. The blue in the heroes’ suits links with the blue seat backs as the ladies climb out of the bus. Yet blue also colors the sky and sea, as the ladies discuss how inured they’ve become to danger. Still, purple signals the immediate threat and how to avert it.

 

Pat Brosseau fills white balloons with black uppercase dialogue that grows bold for intonation, swells for raised voices, and shrinks for lowered voices. Mary Jane’s off-camera dialogue appears in orange narrative boxes, while Lois Lane's appears in pink boxes. As enlarged dialogue fills spiky balloons, and thwips and impacts fill the air, white letters in green boxes pay homage to the characters’ guardians. Final Thoughts

Life is a journey, and maturity necessitates transformation. Yet before someone can enhance their abilities, they must pass through a gauntlet. While Lois Lane and Mary Jane Watson strive to assist their men, they muse on the dangers they’ve faced while traveling from one stage of their lives to the next in DC/Marvel: Superman/Spider-Man #1: The World’s Finest.

Story

At Maverick Inc, Rafael and Kyle stand on guard as other employees load the plane. They don't know what stolen goods Maverick plans to sell, or where the buyer lives. But as Scott keeps everyone updated on the loading progress, Rafael lightens the monotony with a little dancing and singing. Kyle urges Rafael to look the part of an armed guard and not draw attention to them. Assuming Maverick exists, Kyle doesn't want their boss blaming them if things go wrong.

 

In Rafael García: Henchman #1, Danny’s decision to retire prompts Rafael to reevaluate his life. His landlord belittles him. His girlfriend left him because he lacked ambition. Rafael doesn’t understand why people don’t esteem him. He’s traveled around the world, and his boss has the potential to change it. He enjoys his exciting life. Yet other people have the security of regular paychecks and health insurance. Rafael wonders if people would regard him differently if he earned more money and held a management position.

 

Peter Murrieta and D.E. Schrader's story covers the risks and potential rewards of advancing through the ranks. While Rafael wants to know more about the company he works for, he yearns for the good life. While a woman directs loading, Rafael dances in place before the airplane. Dramatic up and down angles enhance Rafael’s positive energy amid the routine duty. At Josh’s urging, they move apart and resume proper defensive stances. But when trading intelligence, the two friends in uniforms and combat armor draw nearer again.

 

As Emmanuel Torres lavishes bright and cheery colors on Ben Herrera’s art, blue dominates the first half of Rafael García: Henchman #1. The soldiers stand in their blue uniforms before blue backgrounds. After their duty shift, they gather in the blue-dominated coffee shop. As Rafael and Josh sit with their departing boss, Danny epitomizes "coolness" with his ponytail and handlebar mustache. The dark bangs hanging over Rafael's left eye enhance his easygoing appearance. Of the three, he smiles the most. And only Rafael wears a shirt adorned with the blue Maverick logo.

 

Clay Adams fills white balloons and boxes with black uppercase letters that grow bold for intonation. The balloons grow spiky when people communicate via radio. Enlarged letters dance in a joyful moment. Yet sound effects signal that worse trouble than an exploding plane lies in Rafael's future. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.

 

Final Thoughts

Rafael works for a secret organization. Yet he's oblivious about the need for secrecy. And while his boss adapts to changing times, Rafael is trapped by his yearning for the good old days. His love for people and his desire to help others could help Rafael improve his life. Or they could complicate his future when he gets "too close to the flame" in Rafael García: Henchman #1.
