Spielberg SC Preview

I first caught the Steven Spielberg train with Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The story swept me into a world of mystery and wonder. Star Trek "The Trouble with Tribbles" author David Gerrold likened Roy Neary's quest to discover the truth about his UFO sighting to a Biblical prophet meeting an angel in Starlog Magazine. That was how I felt, when I discovered this amazing movie.

Now, Amazing Ameziane is shining the spotlight on Steven Spielberg's life and work. How will it enhance your understanding of your favorite Spielberg movie? And will it give you a greater appreciation for his career?

Here's all the info from Titan Comics:

From Amazing Ameziane, the creator of Quentin by Tarantino and Don Coppola, comes the next insightful book in his saga of Cine graphic novels.

Based on the lives and films of acclaimed cinema icons, this book spotlights the inimitable, multi-award-winning Steven Spielberg, director of Jaws, E.T., Back to the Future and countless other masterpieces.

With over a dozen Academy Awards (among many others), Steven Spielberg is considered the most acclaimed director in modern cinema history. From classic escapist thrillers like Jaws and Jurassic Park, magical family movies like E.T., to thoughtful historical dramas like Schindler’s List, Spielberg has something to offer everyone.

In this retrospective graphic novel, Ameziane takes a dive into the mind of the auteur himself, imagining exactly how the cinema icon would tell his story, through his humble beginnings and rise to fame, as well as the struggles and crucial moments of his career. You might know his works, but now you can get to know the man behind the camera.

Created and illustrated by Amazing Ameziane, Spielberg is the fifth instalment in the author’s Cine series, illustrating the behind-the-scenes stories of some of Hollywood’s biggest hitters.

Guy Gardner was a screw-up all his life. Then he became the Allsight and forged a relationship with the Emotional Entities. He taught Corps Leader Jessica Cruz to recognize that the Lanterns needed to respect the Entities more, lest they fall into the same trap as the Manhunters. Now, as they work together, Guy and Jessica hope they can prepare the Lanterns for Darkseid's return.

Still, John Stewart and Jo Mullein have been struggling lately. After repelling the Manhunter threat, they're taking time off to confront unresolved issues. What difficulties will John and Jo confront during their sabbaticals? How will the Corps on Oa adjust to wielding power from the new Emotional Well? Let's put on our power rings, leap into Green Lantern Corps #20, and see!

Story

Life on Oa is changing. Before John Stewart sacrificed himself to protect Oa from the Starbreaker Corps, he helped design new housing districts so Lanterns representing all the colors in the Emotional Spectrum could live together on Oa. Now, Guy Gardner and Jessica Cruz have constructed an Emotional Well. This gives the Emotional Entities a new home on Oa, and helps all the Corps channel the new "Chrome" energy it produces. Yet since the Emotional Entities helped Aya, Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, and all the Lanterns repel the Manhunter invasion, one of their number has vanished.

While Guy Gardner investigates this worrying disappearance, Green Lantern Corps #20 also follows John Stewart and Jo Mullein as they rest and recuperate away from Oa. As John returns to Earth, Morgan Hampton shows John’s return to his life there from Katma Tui’s perspective. Neither John nor Katma wished to return to Oa. Yet, after his other self died, John returned to help his fellow Lanterns. Katma Tui also feels the tension of having other selves who died in service to Oa. While she enjoys watching John reconnect with his Human heritage, Katma yearns for a purpose when they return to Oa.

While the Lanterns attempt to adjust to changes on Oa, and Katma Tui yearns for a more meaningful relationship with her adoptive home, Jo Mullein struggles with leaving Oa. After his mother’s death, John Stewart no longer feels a connection to Earth. Yet Jo Mullein fears returning to the connections on Earth that threaten to imprison her. So, before she returns home, Jo stops off on Zillaboq for a few drinks. Yet, her decision proves both fortuitous and disastrous, as she discovers a new threat to Oa that imprisons her in Green Lantern Corps #20.

Art

As Fernando Pasarín, Oclair Albert, and Juan José Ryp show a microspecies swollen to mammoth proportions, the camera zooms inside a bar within the city of towers sprawling across the animal's back. Like the bouncer, the bartender's head suggests his species has long memories. Yet the people his society chose as protectors wear an imperial symbol on their chests. On Earth, Katma clutches onto John, only releasing him when he lays flowers on a grave. A stone angel with widespread wings watches them like another celestial protector.

As Arif Prianto, Matt Herms, and Romulo Fajardo Jr lavish a palette of bright, attractive colors on Green Lantern Corps #20, green and blue fill a bar filled with representatives from many worlds. The blue and green link Jo with John and Katma on Earth, and a battle between Lanterns on Oa. The red and silver Blackstars evoke the Manhunters that recently attempted to usurp control of the Emotional Spectrum. Yet Katma’s skin, somewhere between violet and red, and her cybernetic leg also link her with the Blackstars.

Dave Sharpe fills white dialogue balloons with black uppercase letters. White letters in black balloons with red outlines and serrated edges signal danger. Katma Tui, Guy Gardner, and Jo Mullein’s thoughts appear in narrative boxes with varying shades of green and white. Colorful and transparent sound effects accompany confrontations, destruction, and an interstellar investigation. Yet enlarged black dialogue provides a clue to a mystery threatening the Green Lantern Corps’ home. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

While commercial interests bolster Vandal Savage’s attempt to police Gotham, corporations attempt to provide security on other worlds. Omni Omega+ Entertainment Corp bought the bounty hunting industry. Then, its executives assert sole law enforcement duties for entire planets and attempt to trademark the Green Lantern symbol. Now, a new corporation seeks to rule the cosmos with an iron hand in Green Lantern Corps #20.

Before he broke out of Arkham Towers, the psychiatrist who evaluated him insisted that he was Todd Russel, not Basil Karlo. Since all eight known Clayfaces share the same DNA, perhaps "Todd Russell" is the same person as the others

After Dr Polaris killed his son, Dr Martin Stein worked tirelessly to create metahumans that the US government could control. But while trying to protect other parents from losing their children, Martin's goal outweighed his ethics. Eventually, Ronnie Raymond and Lorraine Reilly realized how Martin had tricked them. So, despite what they accomplished together, Firestorm and Firehawk eventually parted company with manipulative Martin.

Now, Firestorm and Firehawk are back, but the artificial intelligence Martin designed controls Firestorm. Can Lorraine Reilly and Martin Stein help Ronnie prevent the Firestorm Matrix from transmuting everything in creation? Or does Martin Stein have another secret agenda? Let's put on our flame-resistant clothes, leap into The Fury of Firestorm #6, and see!

Story

After Lorraine Reilly brought Dr Martin Stein to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, they beheld a giant crystal protecting Firestorm. Firehawk invaded the Matrix’s new home and freed Ronnie from memories of working with the Justice League. But when Dr Martin Stein used his device to enter Firestorm’s home, the Matrix recognized him as its father. And instead of casting the Matrix out of Firestorm as he promised, Martin destroys his device.

In The Fury of Firestorm #6, Ronnie, Lorraine, and Martin work together again. This time, they battle supervillains in Ronnie's memories. Or perhaps it is an alternative reality created by the Matrix. Life may have torn them apart. But in this realm, Martin, Ronnie, and Lorraine can fight destructive metahumans to their hearts' content.

As Jeff Lemire muses on the relationships that define us, Martin Stein becomes a father figure. Ronnie and Lorraine love him. Yet Martin’s innate need to control others has prompted them to build barriers to protect themselves from his manipulative nature. Like its Human counterparts, the Firestorm Matrix also seeks freedom from the Humans who once controlled it. Yet while Ronnie, Lorraine, and Martin seek a way to regain control of Firestorm, the artificial intelligence protects them. And instead of transmuting everything around it, the Matrix hesitates to destroy its creator’s world in The Fury of Firestorm #6.

Art

While Firestorm kneels before its creator, Lorraine also kneels before the man who transformed her into Firehawk. Her features contort as Martin smiles and destroys the device that could have banished the Matrix from Firestorm. Yet while Firestorm and Lorraine raise an arm to ward off the resultant explosion, Martin throws his arms wide as the flames hurtle toward him. Then Firestorm stands alone and gazes down in contemplation.

As Rafael De Latorre transports readers from Firestorm’s physical domain to a mental mindscape, Marcelo Maiolo adorns Ronnie’s dreamlike existence with a recollection of the four-color era. Off-white pages replace bright white borders, while shades of green link Martin and Ronnie. Yet yellow, orange, and red link Martin with the “children” he created and link Firestorm’s crystal home with the memories he has placed the Humans inside. Yet everyone has a special place to call their own. As the Matrix contemplates its future, Ronnie, Lorraine, and Martin invade a realm dominated by violet and indigo with just a hint of blue.

Lucas Gattoni conveys speech with black uppercase letters in white balloons. Firestorm’s yellow dialogue appears in red balloons. When Lorraine transforms into Firehawk, she speaks into light blue fields. Martin's blue-and-white face accompanies a storm cloud as he counsels Ronnie in his pseudo-memories. Colored letters reveal the stress the Humans are enduring. Sound effects accompany Martin's act of mercy, his intrusion on Ronnie and Lorraine's privacy, and an action that will change everything. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

Locked together inside the Firestorm Matrix, Ronnie Raymond, Lorraine Reilly, and Dr Martin Stein struggle with deactivating it. Yet after the Matrix remembered how Martin created it, and how Ronnie controlled it while Martin advised him, the Matrix ponders Martin's original intentions. As the characters confront their fears, love, desire for control, anger, and compassion, they reach for a slender thread of hope, even if their choices will part them forever in The Fury of Firestorm #6.
