Eduardo Risso wins an Eisner Award

I wasn't able to attend the Eisner awards last night, but congratulations to Eduardo, DSTLRY, and all the winners! Here's all the info:

SDCC 2025
EDUARDO RISSO WINS EISNER AWARD FOR BEST PAINTER FOR THE BLOOD BROTHERS MOTHER FROM DSTLRY

DSTLRY proudly congratulates legendary artist Eduardo Risso on receiving the Eisner Award for Best Painter/Multimedia Artist (Interior Art) at last night’s Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards during San Diego Comic-Con. Risso was honored for his evocative, genre-defying work on The Blood Brothers Mother, the haunting Western epic written by Brian Azzarello.

“Returning to this kind of story with Brian was like coming home,” Risso said. “I’m deeply honored to receive this award and grateful to DSTLRY for giving us the freedom to make something this bold.”

“It was in Budapest when Eduardo first showed me pages he'd been working on,” Azzarello elaborated. “I'm excited to see the beginning of a gorgeous black and white western, and he shows me these atmospheric water colors and I'm stunned—he never mentioned he was going to paint it. You know you gotta do this for two hundred pages? He smiled. ‘Alright,’ I said. Alright. I don't think there are enough awards for Eduardo, we need to create some more. He's brilliant.”

The Blood Brothers Mother pairs Azzarello and Risso—the Eisner-winning team behind 100 Bullets—in a brutal, heart-wrenching Western about three children who embark on a mission to rescue their mother after she’s abducted by their biological father, recently released from prison in Mexico.

“Eduardo is arguably the best sequential storyteller of this generation and it’s really inspiring to see him still pushing his art by deciding to hand-paint this book,” said DSTLRY editor Will Dennis, who also collaborated with Risso and Azzarello on 100 Bullets. “Every page of The Blood Brothers Mother is its own masterclass.“

“Working with Eduardo and Brian was an absolute priority for DSTLRY,” said co-founder and Chief Creative Officer Chip Mosher. “We launched this company to showcase bold, unflinching storytelling—The Blood Brothers Mother delivers that in spades.”

“This book is a milestone,” added DSTLRY co-founder and CEO David Steinberger. “It’s a fusion of two of the greatest storytellers in comics, creating something unforgettable. Risso’s Eisner win recognizes not just this book’s brilliance but his decades of shaping the visual language of the medium.”

All issues of The Blood Brother Mother are currently available, with a hardcover collection releasing this winter.

In addition, Tula Lotay (co-creator of Somna) won Best Cover Artist. Other DSTLRY creators who took home an Eisner Award include The City Beneath Her Feet colorist Jordie Bellairewinning Best Colorist and Through the Boughs: A Yuletide Offering contributing letterer Clayton Cowleswinning Best Letterer.

The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards are the industry’s most prestigious honor, voted on by comics professionals and awarded each year during San Diego Comic-Con International.
