William Friedkin's 1973 movie, "The Exorcist", excited viewers imaginations. People flocked to cinemas to see the movie, and TV stations replayed it endlessly. Even in its edited form, and watched on small, square Black & White tube TVs, the story of valiant priests trying to banish a demon from young Regan MacNeil compelled like few other movies. 

There have been many other movies filmed about priests attempting to banish the forces of Hell since then, and likely many more novels written by authors inspired by William Peter Blatty's seminal novel.
