Wally West wants to find his father. Sam Scudder claims he can rescue Rudy West from Still Point via the mirror dimension. And as questions regarding the failed project arise in Washington DC, Colonel Flag wants all the fallout from Project Olympus to disappear. So he's offered the Rogues a clean slate. But first, they must kill Grodd.

While Wally tries to reunite with his father, Grodd has found his father. The two experimental subjects from Elenore Thawne's operation are enjoying life together as a family. Or at least they were, until the soldiers came. Can Wally protect Grodd from the Trickster and her fellow Rogues? And what happened to Grodd's dad?

Wally West used to ignore his father's phone calls. Now, Wally replays his dad’s messages, wishing he could respond. Although he’s staying at the Dibny Youth Mission, Wally doesn't want to tell Ralph Dibny what he's going through. Still, Linda Park drags it out of him. Then, she offers to help.

Leaving Central City behind, Wally and Linda return to Fort Fox, the base his father oversaw, and where Colonel Rudy West sacrificed himself to save his son. Can Linda help Wally rescue his father? Or will they succumb to the dangers Elenore Thawne left behind? Let’s put on our protective suits and goggles, leap into Absolute Flash #14, and see!

Story

Wally West traveled wherever his father’s work took him. While Rudy West oversaw Fort Fox for the military, Wally wonders if the personnel assigned there were all a cover for Project Olympus. When her operation got out of control, Elenore Thawne vanished, along with the remnants of her staff, subjects, and experimental weapons. But while Wally doubts they learn anything in the remnants Elenore left behind, Linda reminds him that it doesn’t hurt to look.

In Absolute Flash #14, Wally finds himself in a realm of mirrors. While some reflect their images, many glass pieces reveal other people and places. The dimension seems keyed to the entrants, as Wally and Linda make connections with the people and places they see. But they don't have time to study the mirrors. People wearing goggles are searching for someone, and they kill anyone else who gets in their way.

After his mother’s death, Wally pushed everyone away. While Mary West endured her own struggles, she helped Wally cope when life threatened to overwhelm him. After the accident that transformed him, Grodd helped Wally endure the stress and trauma of coping with his new abilities, the loss he suffered, and evading capture from Elenore’s people. As the fifteen-year-old struggles to navigate this strange realm, he and Linda must draw on the similar hardships they’ve endured to help each other through their discoveries and ordeals in Absolute Flash #14.

Art

As Wally evades his pursuers, a five-sided mirror reflects their images, while an oval reveals Ralph Dibny’s sanctuary for teens. The mirrors extend upward as they race through corridors, as if navigating a maze. Yet the mirrors angle around them, offering no means of escape. Gravity gives way to the Speed Force as Wally carries Linda across the mirrors, and they lose their sense of up and down. Then, Haining lays out the mirror-like panels across pages, as the inhabitants of this realm float through space or rise from mirrors.

Wally leaves afterimages and lines in his wake as he races like Alice through this realm of Looking Glasses. As red lines streak between green air and light-blue mirrors, Linda wears Wally’s red jacket. Wally’s orange hair glows yellow, linking him with their pursuers’ goggles, and evoking how he defended Linda and Ralph from another of Elenore Thawne’s test subjects. A flash of pink connects with Linda’s lavender shirt, while giving Wally hope of finding his father in Adriano Lucas’ brightly colored Absolute Flash #14.

Tom Napolitano fills white dialogue balloons with black uppercase letters. The words grow bold for intonation, and turn upside down when Wally and Linda defy gravity. Linda's exclamations swell, distort balloons, and produce lightning bolt arrows. Sound effects accentuate a fist shattering a mirror, and a resumption of the Speed Force. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

When life threatens to overwhelm us, it's easy to feel like we're pawns in someone else's game. While Wally West and Linda Park have seen their worlds fall apart, they're also survivors who have refused to give up on life. As they search for clues to find Rudy West, Wally learns more about Elenore Thawne's operation and why Linda ended up at the Dibny Youth Mission in Absolute Flash #14.

Wally West never had a home. The military transferred his father too frequently for Wally ever to set down roots. And his father was always busy. So, when Wally struggled with anxiety, his mother helped center him. But after she died, Wally and his father grew farther apart.

After an accident at Fort Fox gifted Wally with new abilities, Wally fled his past and Captain Snart's team of enhanced soldiers. Eventually, his father sacrificed himself to save Wally. Even his new friend Grodd, the monkey that Elenore Thawne experimented on, has abandoned him. Can Wally find a place he belongs? And where will Captain Snart and the Rogues go, now that the woman who made them into demigods has disappeared? Let’s put on our protective suits and goggles, leap into Absolute Flash #13, and see!

Story

When Wally was on the run, Ralph Dibny took him in. So, after chaos shook Fort Fox, Wally returns to the Dibny Mission. He’s still traumatized by what he’s been through. Wally doesn’t know who he can trust. The last thing Wally wants to do is endanger anyone else. So, he tries to deal with his loss on his own.

In Absolute Flash #13, Wally realizes that other people want to help him. But how can they? He's unsure what he can do anymore. Before, Wally could connect with Still Point via the red matter. He summoned doorways to this other dimension without thinking about it. Now, Wally seems to have lost that ability. When Wally dreams about his father, he’s unsure what they signify. Forging a way forward means figuring out what he can do, now that Project Olympus has shut down.

When he visited Still Point, Barry Allen told Wally that his abilities made him unique. Yet those abilities link him with an emerging superpowered community. And anything newsworthy travels fast. People want to know what makes Wally tick. Some, like Elenore Thawne, want to control him. After all the time he has spent fleeing his past and grappling with what’s happened to him, Wally gets a chance to deal with what he’s gone through in Absolute Flash #13. He may not have all the answers. Still, every new journey begins with a single step.

Art

Adriano Lucas infuses a dream with arcing red and yellow energy. Wally jerks up in bed so fast his hair emulates the departing red energy bolts. Streetlights and nearby buildings cast white circles in the pink night air glimpsed through the dorm room windows. As Wally sits on the building's roof beneath a starry pink, peach, and yellow sky, yellow highlights enliven his red hair. Robert Dibny is no Barry Allen. Yet as Wally looks at his host and remembers fighting Heatwave amid red and yellow, Robert's expression recalls how Barry befriended him.

In another universe, Central City is a gleaming hub of civilization. But in a world where Lazarus Corp helped Barry Allen and Elenore Thawne explore the Human potential, old stone buildings defy the changing times. Lattice windows in the Dibny Mission dining hall recall Robert’s wish that he could afford air conditioning. Under Haining’s evocative pencils, a junkyard symbolizes a town struggling to resist the encroaching decay.

Tom Napolitano fills white dialogue balloons and narrative boxes with black uppercase letters. The words grow bold for intonation, swell for raised voices, and shrink for lowered volume. Sound rips through the air as Wally discovers what he can still do. Yet in Absolute Flash #13, empty balloons traumatize Wally and steel his resolve to fix a broken situation. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

For far too long, Wally West dealt with the world by blocking it out. After his mother's death, he put on his headphones, ignored his father, and zoned out of life. But when he loses his father, Wally stops running and confronts his complicated past in Absolute Flash #13.
