Story

After Marnie's capture, Merlin transported the families of Fel and her friends to Camelot. There, they enjoy an enchanted holiday, unaware of what their children are doing. But like Connor, one of Fel's family members is absent. So, after Fel uses King Arthur's glamour and her family ties, she confronts her father in the Oval Office. Fel is part of a two-pronged attack to rescue Marnie from a cell and her father from Mordred's corrupting influence.

 

Tom Taylor capitalizes on events in previous issues while showing how the children have grown in C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #6. Kevin struggled to trust his stick. Randall and Kelly were more adept at fantasy quests than real-world adventurers. Ash tended to hang back but didn't fear confrontation like Hanan. Of all the friends, perhaps Connor has struggled the most. After losing his parents, Connor tended to avoid closeness with others. But he has taken Lancelot's counsel, realizing that the most self-reliant knight leads a lonely life.

 

While Fel engages in a battle of wits with her father, Kevin demonstrates how he has learned to channel Pellinor’s power. Unlike the other former knights, who counsel their wielders as they train, the knight inhabiting Kevin’s wand has taken a vow of silence. While Pellinor leaves Kevin to judge how best to use him, Mordred encourages Fel's father to increase his power over others in C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #6.

 

Art

After carrying her sword into the Oval Office, Fel rests her arm on Excalibur's crossguard, addressing her father in her soccer team uniform. Mark stops pointing Mordred at his daughter but holds the scabbard like a scepter. While Mordred's serpent-like headpiece dominates a closeup of the President, Arthur doesn’t crowd Fel’s face in a corresponding closeup.

 

As he passes through Security dressed in a school uniform, Kevin's features betray his anxiety. He knows he's playing a dangerous game as he navigates the checkerboard floor of a wide hallway. Perhaps as he fills the air with green smoke, Kevin remembers the beheaded Green Knight, or the statue missing from the stone likenesses in the hedge maze.

 

As Rain Beredo lavishes bright and appealing colors on Daniele Di Nicuolo's art in C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #6, gold adorns Arthur's sword while Mordred's scabbard is bronze. Far below the royal confrontation, green-and-black-clad soldiers charge through billowing green smoke. Kevin appears as a red, white, and blue figure outlined in green amid purple surroundings. As the monocolored troops near, Kevin summons all the colors of the rainbow. 

 

Wes Abbott fills white dialogue balloons with lowercase black letters that grow bold for intonation, swell for raised voices, and shrink for lowered voices. The weapons' dialogue inhabits white shapes with colored borders. Mordred speaks into white balloons surrounded by black smoke. Beige boxes with a stylized first letter locate us in time and space, while extreme emotion makes balloons spiky. Final Thoughts

As with King Arthur and his knights, a great destiny may await Fel, Connor, and their friends. But while the children draw inspiration from a prolific chronicler of epic tales, Tom Taylor reveals how a desire for power can destroy even the strongest families in C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #6.

Story

Connor wields Lancelot’s sword. The knight assures Connor that Marmyadose can cut through anything. But even if his sword is sharper than a Ginsu knife, Connor knows he cannot protect his friends. They may have defeated the Agents of Mordred on their school soccer field. But the President of the United States has formidable weapons and soldiers at his command. Connor has lost his parents. He won’t allow his friends to risk their lives to rescue Marnie.

 

In C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #5, Connor must reconcile his friends' desire to help with Merlin's belief that a great destiny awaits them. As the sorcerer told Captain Gwen, sometimes destiny needs a little work. Thankfully, they are in Camelot. Unlike in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, time passes slowly in the outside world while the children train and their parents enjoy an enchanted holiday. Still, the idea of Connor's imperiled grandmother drives the children to learn how to become more proficient warriors.

 

As Connor and his friends look to famous stories for inspiration, they must trust each other to become an effective fighting force. They may clash on the training field, but Captain Gwen assures them that hard work and discipline are essential to success. Still, family lies at the heart of Tom Taylor’s story. While Arthur’s son shattered the knights’ fellowship, both Connor and Fel have struggled while growing up in broken homes.

 

Art

The children wear dour expressions as the enormity of the task ahead sinks in. Connor departs the castle in C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #5. Then, from atop the drawbridge over the moat, he confronts his friends. Merlin and Gwen's demeanor does not soft-soap the difficulty of becoming great warriors. The children's faces reveal their frustration while learning and their hesitancy to overcome their inhibitions. But their features change as they gain determination and confidence while mastering their abilities.

 

Rain Beredo lavishes a loaded palette of bright and appealing colors on Daniele Di Nicuolo’s art in C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #5. Fel’s shirt, and Connor and Merlin’s yellow hair, link the three leaders of the young heroes. Gold links Merlin’s cloak with Excalibur and Ash’s spear, evoking Arthur and Uther, and the sorcerer’s relationship with the kings who once wielded their weapons. While Hanan shares pink with a sympathetic soul, green symbolizes the rivalry that can exist even among the most valiant heroes.

Merlin may believe that a great future awaits the children who gained their weapons from the flying boulder. But as they train, Merlin reminds them that nothing is assured. And Fel realizes that she can rely on found family more than blood relations in C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #5.

Story

Mordred's agents tried to intercept the enchanted weapons. After failing to capture the kids, the heavily armed soldiers who captured Connor's grandmother would have gone after all their parents. So, Merlin brought them to England. From there, Fel used Excalibur to transport them to Camelot. Now, they inhabit this historic kingdom outside of time. And thanks to Merlin’s sorcery, their parents don’t realize they are learning how to wield deadly weapons.

 

But their parents need not worry. First, Captain Gwen wants to see what she has to work with in C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #4. Her subordinates may have bowed to the children when they arrived. But Captain Gwen looks down her nose at them. Gwen realizes the boulder sought them out for a reason. But just because the kids have trained together to play soccer doesn’t mean they can fight other people. Connor doubted his ability to defeat the agents of Mordred. Hanan didn’t want to hurt anyone. Now, Gwen faces the daunting task of helping the children push past their inhibitions and believe in their ability to defend the world against oppressors.

 

Thankfully, Gwen has help. In Tom Taylor’s story, Merlin explains why King Arthur and his knights inhabit these ancient weapons. As they did when surrounded by Mordred's agents, these legendary warriors can counsel the children. In time, the kids may become like Connor's grandmother, Marnie, capable of standing up to Mordred's agents with the axe she hid in her shopping cart. But in C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #4, the legendary warriors also realize that the kids need to learn more than how to defeat their opponents. They must also learn to support and rely on each other.

 

Art

As Marnie sits in a secure interview room, the agents of Mordred study her through two-way glass. Her colorful garb contrasts with the tile walls, the white table and chairs, and the men’s matching dark suits. The air swirls around the children, Merlin, and Captain Gwen as Camelot rises on a nearby hill. Daniele Di Nicuolo devotes a panel to showcasing each child with their weapon.

 

While Merlin kneels beside Kevin, Captain Gwen stands with her hands behind her back. She gazes down at the children. Attired in her uniform, with an emblem emblazoned on her greatcoat, she looks more than capable of wielding Excalibur or another of the ancient weapons. Gwen's expression and demeanor could be worrying signs.

 

Marnie, Gwen, and Merlin wear blue and yellow/gold coats. All the children, barring Kevin and Hanan, wear one or more of these colors. As Captain Gwen and Fel wear yellow, Rain Beredo paints the backgrounds of a two-panel face-off yellow. In addition to sharing the same sex, both have red hair. Captain Gwen will force the children to fight silver combatants in this brightly colored story. But their pre-training face-off isn’t the only time the leader of the Camelot Corps and the child who wields Excalibur will have a battle of wills in C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #4.

Final Thoughts

Like Clark Griswald, their parents may think they're on vacation. Fel and her friends know they're on the ultimate youth training scheme. They have yet to realize just how badly the world needs them. But while the children train in a protected realm, Connor's grandmother realizes the dangers threatening their world.

 

Like them, fate chose Marnie to become a warrior. She may not get to enjoy her prize for winning at Bingo. Her captors may not grant her a telephone call. Still, Marnie embodies the spirit of Camelot’s legendary warriors in C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #4.

Story

When the boulder crashed in Bronson Canyon, the kids saw a sword jutting from it. Kevin imagined that it was a meteorite sent from face-hugging aliens. He grew confused when the boulder produced weapons for his friends but gave him a stick. And while the ancient arms spoke to their bearers, Kevin's stick gave him the silent treatment. But when Mordred’s forces surrounded them, the stick glowed, sending a wave of energy crashing into the surrounding soldiers.

 

Kevin may be confused by his silent stick in C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #3. But Lancelot’s spirit speaks via Connor's sword, and Arthur Pendragon communicates with Fel through Excalibur. Little Hanan dislikes sneaking out of the house at night. But as the helicopter hovers overhead, Palamedes speaks through her bow. The knight's spirit tells Hanan how to attack Mordred's air support.

 

When the boulder cast off its chains and flew out of The Hill in Cornwall, Captain Gwen realized another age of heroes had begun. As she sat at the round table in her operations room, she told her lieutenants that the big boss was en route to California to assist the young heroes. The kids are frightened and confused in Tom Taylor’s story. Still, help is close by. No matter the odds against them, Fel, Connor, and their friends have a choice. They can succumb to fear. Or they can trust in their new weapon-bound friends, and like the Beastie Boys, fight for their right to parley.

 

Art

While the overturned vehicles burn, lights glare from the grandstands and the hovering helicopter. Daniele Di Nicuolo shows the children's fright through their expressions. Yet aside from Randall and Ash, who struggle with a longer, heavier spear and lance, the rest of the group holds their weapons high. A dramatic upshot increases Hanan's stature as she acts on trust. As it crashes to the ground, the overturned helicopter evokes a great white shark in C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #3. (You're going to need a bigger brigade, Mordred!)

 

Rain Beredo shows the brightly colored diversity of youth clashing with a black-and-green monolithic establishment in a splash-page clash. Like a Roman soldier, Kelly shelters behind her red, blue, white, and orange shield. While the red pays homage to the group's leader, the other colors link with her attire. When he appears, their new boss sports colors that link him with all the children bar one. Yet in the brightly colored C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #3, Hanan's pink hoodie looks at home inside her new boss's vehicles.

In C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #2, Connor accompanies his grandmother to Bingo. Cade Yeager and his daughter may not ride through the room in Shane Dyson’s rally car. Still, the evening doesn’t follow its usual pattern. And on the way home, the threat Arthur and Lancelot worried about surfaces.

 

After a look-in at the Hill in England, Tom Taylor lets us glimpse events from Fel and Connor’s eyes. But while Fel grabbed the spotlight in the last issue, this time, Connor is the star. He navigates the twists and turns life throws at him and rallies his friends to brave the dangers that threaten them all.

 

The weapons may have chosen Fel, Connor, Randall, Ash, Kelly, Kevin, and Hanan. But in C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #2, the kids discover what it means to wield them. Daniele Di Nicuolo returns us to the Hill, where the former guardians of the weapons sit around a round table and study glowing monitors. In the Hollywood Hills, Fel clutches a sword as big as she is with two arms. Soccer players occupy a poster and photos on her walls, while a symbolic sculpture adorns her desk. Connor's thinner blade is longer than he is. As the waning light tinges the windows of his hovel, Connor and Lancelot form a silhouette. But the jewel in the hilt and the blade glow. And when Connor whirls it and casts it into shadow, light races along its edges like a chainsaw blade.

 

Connor's black, white, and blue uniform evokes a martial artist, while his red belt suggests his novice status in C.O.R.T.: Children of the Round Table #2. His grandmother dresses in the style of her youth. Marnie owns her surroundings while dressed in blue, orange, red, and gold. When Lancelot trained his pupil, the blue blade traced white arcs through the purple, blue, green, orange, and yellow sky. But by the time Connor and Marnie return home, a glowing moon shines in the starry black sky. Blue hovers over nearby buildings. As with the monitors in the Hill, Rain Beredo makes the nearby lamps and vehicle headlights glare.
