Story

After Selina rescued Holly from her air-tight room in the shuttered Seagate Home for Troubled Teens, Holly drove her back to town before the two women went their separate ways. But when Holly decides to ditch the stolen car, she discovers that she is still part of Black Mask’s plans.

 

While Holly struggles to escape Roman Sionis’ control, Selina also realizes she is still caught in his web. Seeing Katarina Belov explained why and how Roman had turned her life into a nightmare. Yet as she plays the message on the tablet Katarina handed her, Selina realizes she has another friend to save in Catwoman #89.

 

Just as Roman left clues that led her to the Seagate Home for Troubled Teens, a clue he left there helps Selina deduce Sam “Slam” Bradley’s whereabouts. Like a kidnapper demanding that a relative of his victim jump through hoops to ensure they aren’t followed to the drop point, Selina must race against time to save Slam’s life. But even as she does so, she knows that neither Roman nor Katarina wants her money.

 

As Selina navigates the hurdles Roman has set in her way, Torunn Grønbekk's story contrasts Roman Sionis and Carmine Falcone. Both crime bosses have had their ups and downs. While Carmine differentiates between disloyalty and business, Roman punishes anyone who fails or displeases him. Black Mask is an astute businessman with an exceptional ability to orchestrate and execute elaborate plans. Yet after Carmine Falcone orchestrates the heist of the Gotham Police Department Headquarters quickly and quietly, he worries about the repercussions of Black Mask’s current operation in Catwoman #89.

 

Art

As a road worker sets cones before halted automobiles, he motions to the driver of a cement truck. Holly climbs from her appropriated classic convertible to ask a fellow driver what’s happening. She shields her face with her hand as a brace of motorcycle cops passes. Instead of watching the bottleneck below, Selina stands before a water tank, studying the skull-face on the tablet. Then, faceless servants of Black Mask, like the one Katarina shot, follow her as Selina whips across the rooftops.

 

As Davide Gianfelice portrays the culmination of Black Mask's plans, Selina's black-and-gray suit blends into the blue night sky. The blue tablet turns red when Selina drops it and whips past blue and yellow windows. While some of the blue evening enters through the tall windows, sapphire and indigo fill Carmine Falcone's penthouse. Still, Patricio Delpeche mixes gray with the colors, reminding us of the complicated relationship between Carmine and Selina in Catwoman #89.

 

As the narrator employs black lowercase letters in yellow boxes, Selina’s thoughts fill light indigo boxes. White starbursts relay voices from TVs, phones, and tablets. Intonation emboldens words in white dialogue balloons, and raised voices enlarge dialogue. Steve Wands uses smaller, gray letters for lowered voices. Occasional colored dialogue balloons, or white balloons with colored outlines, spice up scenes. Final Thoughts

Before she came to Gotham to ruin Selina Kyle's life, Katarina Belov did her homework. Yet in her anger at Selina, she failed to recognize the inadequacies of her working methods. So, as she repeats history once again, Katarina is surprised when, like her sons, Roman also defies her control in Catwoman #89.

Story

Black Mask trapped Holly Robinson in a building that evoked painful memories. As she slowly asphyxiated, she stared at the hypo he left behind, knowing it could take away her pain. Yet worse was that Black Mask drugged her and made her believe that Selina had betrayed her. Farther away in terms of miles, if not emotions, Magdalena Selina senses that someone is entering her house. Like Holly, Maggie suffered from Black Mask's cruelty. And the trauma she endured is a wound that may never heal.

 

As Catwoman #88 follows Selina, Holly, and Maggie’s journey, Black Mask’s minions also pursue Samuel “Slam” Bradley. And as Black Mask enacts his grand plan, the woman who funded his magnum opus watches. While Black Mask feels every passing moment viscerally, Katarina Belov studies her agent. Unlike the sons who thought they knew better than her, Black Mask reveres her. Yet she sits and watches, imperious and quietly scornful, of these men who orchestrate criminal empires.

 

As Black Mask forces Selina, Holly, and Maggie to relive their painful past, a woman wearing a mask of her face threatens Selina’s future in Gotham. Still, she’s one among many. Davide Gianfelice begins by contrasting two pairs of women. The first pair sits in a comfortable office. A teapot, cups, and saucers rest on the side table between them. Maggie looks down and shields her face with her hand. Yet when she faces her therapist, the woman averts her gaze. Compared with the therapist’s spotless, light-filled office, filled with arranged bookshelves and an organized desk, Holly and Selina sit in a dirty hallway. Cardboard boxes rest nearby, and blankets cover old furniture. Holly hides her face with her hands. Yet when she sees her friend's pain, Holly embraces Selina.

 

While Patricio Delpeche adorns Maggie’s painful present in red, Holly and Selina commiserate amid green. Blue vehicles, clothing, and a blue night sky tantalize characters with the possibility of escape. Clad in blue and red, Katarina hopes to destroy Selina’s life. Yet as Selina strives to end the cycle of violence, yellow and orange lights illuminate the green-tinged gray buildings in Catwoman #88.

 

Steve Wands locates readers in time and space with white lowercase letters. While the narrator employs black lowercase letters in yellow boxes, Selina’s thoughts fill light indigo boxes. White starbursts relay phone calls. Intonation emboldens words in white dialogue balloons, while raised voices enlarge dialogue. When the background fades away, colored dialogue balloons rise above the vignettes. Yet as gunshots fill the air, red letters on a dirty wall warn of Selina’s future. And in their determination to torment Selina, Katarina Belov and Black Mask ignite fires that could finish off the job Selina started last time in Catwoman #88.

Story

So, Black Mask begins at the end. Or at least the end of George’s life. With her homeless friend lying dead in the apartment, Selina Kyle hears his voice from a satellite phone. Instead of the eviction notice, she finds a note taped to her door. And she hears the Gotham Police climbing the stairs.

 

After beginning two weeks ago, when Selina returned to Gotham, Catwoman #86 launches Selina Kyle on a hunt. Just as Selina changes identities to tell passersby a story, Black Mask constructs a narrative for her. But while Selina pursues Black Mask's clues, his story recalls Katarina Belov’s hunt for Selina. Once more, the police want Selina after attending a charity gala. Again, the GCPD seek her in the apartment that anchors Selina’s cherished life in Gotham. Yet this time, Selina's safehouse doesn't offer her the same freedom she once found in an alias.

 

In Torunn Grønbekk’s story, Gotham once again becomes too hot for Selina Kyle. Instead of traveling around the world and pursuing clues to Evie Hall's death, Selina Kyle follows Black Mask's breadcrumbs through Gotham. And instead of Katarina Belov burning down Selina's life as Evie Hall, Black Mask seeks to destroy Selina Kyle's life as thoroughly as she helped bring down Katarina's empire in Catwoman #86.

While he gives her a wooden chair, Black Mask cannot sit still before her golden mask. So, he rises as she speaks with him. As she removes her mask, Katarina remembers wandering through the flames Selina unleashed in her mansion. Recalling a nurse who showed her kindness, Katarina Belov touches his mask. When she cradles his chin in her bandaged fingers, Black Mask rises to cover her ravaged features.

 

As Davide Gianfelice propels Selina Kyle on a race against time, Patricio Delpeche adorns Catwoman #86 with a roving palette of limited colors. Black, gray, and tan surround Black Mask as he speaks with Katarina. Her light-blue and red clothes link with memories of her reduced state before Black Mask uplifts her. A red chair links with her red eye, and red marks of deception amid a green-tinged battle that recalls Selina's invasion of Vandal Savage's domain. Yet like the Corvette parked outside the pub where she met Holly, another red vehicle warns of imminent danger.

Final Thoughts

Carmine Falcone unleashed a wave of death around the world to demonstrate that he was untouchable. Yet Selina Kyle proved that he wasn’t. After working for him to rebuild her life in Gotham and help people like George and Holly, Black Mask uses Katarina Belov's money to send a wave of death crashing upon everyone Selina cares about. But while Black Mask reveres her as a swan in Catwoman #86, he has brought a lioness into his den. Alongside her late husband, Katarina built an empire upon drugs and secrets. And she’s written books on Carmine Falcone and Black Mask.

While Patricio Delpeche adorns Davide Gianfelice with a thematic palette, red links the bloody scene by the docks with Vandal Savage's domain. As a woman in a black dress unclips a red rope from a brass stanchion, shadows turn black clothing purple, while the woman covers her head with a pink scarf.
