The soldiers who fought in the trenches of World War I called it Shellshock. A century later, it goes by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. But whether you call it Shellshock, PTSD, or Combat Stress Reaction, it's just a label. And no label can compare to the mark war leaves on soldiers. Sometimes for a few years. Sometimes, for life.

EC's new Shellshock anthology begins in the charnel house of Afghanistan. Where will it transport readers next? And how will it explore the battles veterans face at home? Let's grab our combat gear, leap into EC Shellshock #1, and see what happens!

Story

John Arcudi transports readers back a quarter century to the Shkin Firebase in Afghanistan. In “Scorched Earth,” Corporal Rita Cruces' military service is winding down. But as her friend Denny reminds her, just because she's about to go home, she should not succumb to superstition.

While Rita Cruces fears venturing into enemy territory days before her release, Michael W. Conrad transports readers back to World War I. After six months of fighting in the trenches, the higher-ups on both sides have organized a holiday truce. In "Christmas," an unnamed soldier worries about abandoning the trenches to bury his fallen soldiers. But he fears meeting the monsters he's only caught glimpses of amid the fighting.

For this third trip through time in EC Shellshock #1, Julio Anta transports readers to Langley, Virginia, in 1964. Dr Jeremy Davis’ patriotism is the guiding force of his life in “Blowback.” As he works for the CIA’s Directorate of Science and Technology, he knows that a nuclear bomb could end his life in an instant. And with the insidious threat of Communism recently infecting Cuba’s leader, Jeremy hopes to succeed where the Bay of Pigs Invasion failed.

After examining a century of Human warfare from different perspectives, Benito Cerena and Tom Fowler venture beyond this planet wracked by conflict. In “World of the Wars," many alien races have united to forge a historic pact. The assembled species recognize the intolerable cost of warfare to their people and resources. Still, recognizing that reasonable people will not always agree, the enlightened representatives propose a means of resolving their differences without damaging their worlds or incurring civilian casualties.

Finally, William M Gaines and Al Feldstein return us to the battlefields of Europe in their classic 1952 reprint, "Yellow." With the Germans encroaching on their position, Colonel Clark Henderson cannot contact Headquarters in EC Shellshock #1. But while he organizes a mission to get reinforcements, Clark learns that his son, his pride and joy, may not be living up to his ideals.

Art

In “Scorched Earth,” Shawn Martinbrough and Matt Herms surround the soldiers with the mountainous desert. A red, white, and blue flag brightens the gray mess hall, while green and yellow link the soldiers with the foreign lands. Yet in this story about the haunting nature of warfare, yellow and orange flames symbolize the toll warfare takes on its participants.

Gaunt faces, protected by steel helmets, peer over sandbags at a land of stunted and broken trees. Yet burning candles affixed to barren branches symbolize common ground. When the soldiers gather, yellow and orange compete with the dominant browns and grays as darkness falls. Yet after a soldier stares at a black-and-white photo in “Christmas,” Albert Monteys paints a soldier’s recollections in vibrant green.

On a bright, sunny day, the US flag flies beside a building and a futuristic parking lot canopy. In their laboratory, scientists use welding torches, hypodermic needles, soldering irons, and noxious chemicals to fashion weapons of surreptitious destruction. Yet in David Lapham & Nick Filardi's dark comedy "Blowback," a white-and-red creation and blue Xs on photos symbolize the protagonist’s patriotism in EC Shellshock #1.

The diversity of life that gathers at an excavated comet proclaims the eternal desire for peace. Yet, Tom Fowler’s portraits of civilization and its fragility make “World of the Wars” a heartbreaking read. As Michelle Madsen enlivens a series of regulated conflicts, yellow and orange are followed by splashes of red. Yet amid the hyperreal colors of this Hollywood Tent Pole-style production, an object covered in brown cloth becomes a symbol people cling to.

As the Colonel studies a map, his Sergeant plugs wires into a control board while listening to headphones. Michael Atiyeh’s restored coloring adorns the characters in green uniforms and brown equipment, while faded or vibrant flats highlight foreground characters and tense encounters. As in a single-location set TV show, Jack Davis cranks up the tension as the Colonel plans, waits, worries, and barks orders in his field office. When he finally abandons it in “Yellow,” his actions lead both to victory and defeat.

Lettering

Rich Starkings and Tyler Smith fill white dialogue balloons with black uppercase text, while narration fills white and colored boxes. "Christmas" and "World of the Wars" are narrative-only stories. But while one bespeaks reverence for comrades, the second emphasizes following the rules to preserve the peace. Thanks to Oni Press and Superfan Promotions for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Every action can have unintended consequences. Just as a stone thrown into a pond creates a myriad of ripples, so do the conflicts in war. Once the weapons begin firing, acts of compassion and friendship can be misinterpreted or abused. To preserve their futures, people compromise their principles in the name of peace. Yet even after the fighting stops, people pay the price for using violence to resolve conflicts in EC Shellshock #1.

Rating 9.8/10

Cruel Universe 2 #5 Review

Writer: Ryan Haddock, Andrew Wheeler, & Corinna Bechko

Artist: Kano, Andrea Mutti & Tyler Jenkins

Colorist: Michael Atiyeh

Letterer: Richard Starkings & Tyler Smith

Cover Artists: Lee Bermejo, Liam Sharp, Albert Monteys & Malachi Ward

Publisher: Oni Press

Price: $4.99

Release Date: December 3, 2025

Life may not be easy on planet Earth. But living on the planet's biosphere is far easier than surviving in the cold, dark void. Space offers Humans nothing they need to survive. People take what they need with them and hope that's enough. What happens when it isn't? And even on Earth, how do you respond when others prey on you? Let’s leap into Cruel Universe 2 #5 and see!

Hope Endures: Story

James Bond loved his Beretta and didn't want to part with it, even when it let him down. In Hope Endures, Ryan Haddock introduces Captain Cole Queller, a pilot who forms a bond with his fighter. Like Bond, Cole stuck by the ship, even when newer models became available. But when he's stuck on an alien planet, he's glad he stuck by her. Like Cole, "Hope" feels the same and cherishes their time together.

Hope Endures: Art

Kano shows Cole sitting on a sandstone boulder near his shattered ship in Cruel Universe 2 #5. Surrounding him are the toothlike spikes symbolizing the mineral wealth beneath a surface incapable of supporting life. The events that forged Cole’s friendship with his ship play through Cole’s mind in black and white. A limited palette of light colors adorns the lone figure in a spacesuit, as seen from an empty cockpit. Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith place black uppercase text in white dialogue balloons. The ship's thoughts appear as white uppercase letters in black narrative boxes.

Byproduct: Story

Andrew Wheeler introduces us to Marcus Keane. He’s a man who gets what he wants. Anyone who fails to provide that is superfluous to requirements. When his doctor tells him that all the money in the world won't solve his problems, Marcus opts for a radical cure. Byproduct puts overachievers who treat people like appliances under the microscope, while reminding us how tempting it is to hang onto the things that harm us.

Byproduct: Art

Tattoos entwine like double helices along Marcus' neck. His doctor's hair and glasses evoke an absent-minded scientist. Andrea Mutti introduces Marcus to Vida Cash. Vida wears similar clothes, shows him graphic displays, and guides Marcus through their facility. Michael Atiyeh adorns Byproduct with a vibrant palette. Yet the doctor and his patient become silhouettes against a stormy sky when Dr Ash delivers his prognosis in Cruel Universe 2 #5. The red, yellow, and green double helix display suggests more years to enjoy the tropical paradise in which Marcus lives. Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith deliver black, uppercase lettering in white balloons, and off-panel conversation in colored narrative boxes.

Some Time to Reflect: Story

Do you ever wish that you had more resources and time? What if you could split yourself in two? Or, like Lord Voldemort, hide away other copies of yourself and have them help you with your work? Corinna Bechko introduces us to a scientist who finds a way to maximize her productivity. As in David Brin's novel Kiln People, a woman uses versions of herself to pursue necessary tasks that she can capitalize on. But in Cruel Universe 2 #5, her golems are flesh and blue, and don't carry an expiration date. Even more than Byproduct, Some Time to Reflect seems a metaphor for ignoring those around us in search of productivity and achievement.

Some Time to Reflect: Art

Tyler Jenkins shows a woman sitting outside her mountain cabin. Inside, she finally notices another version of herself in a mirror. As in Phantasm, the window opens a portal to her other self. Tyler’s scenes showcase pink and green. Along the way, red seeps in and splatters. Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith open with uppercase words in dialogue balloons and sound effects that introduce the woman and the instigating event. But the colored narrative boxes relay the actor behind the scenes, manipulating events for her own benefit. Thanks to Oni Press and Superfan Promotions for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

As people explore space, visit pocket universes, and delve into the potential of the genome, some reveal their inhumanity, while a machine makes a very Human choice in Cruel Universe 2 #5.

Amazing Spider-Man #14 Review

Release Date: October 15, 2025

Hermes Crenshaw believes that Manhattan's new Take No Prisoners Spider-Man hails from a parallel universe. Instead, while Ben Reilly impersonates Peter Parker at Rand, Norman Osborn thwips the streets as Peter’s alter ego. But Norman doesn’t practice Peter’s restraint. And he hates losing.

When Miles Morales, Spider-Boy, Silk, Araña, and Spider-Gwen invade his web after losing his “cowardly” lawsuit against Roderick Kingsley, Norman lashes out. Can Spider-Norman placate New York's Spider-Society? And will the Sic Semper Monstrum club teach Roderick Kingsley their secret handshake? Let's thwip into Amazing Spider-Man #14 and see!

Story

Although Silk assured Norman that Peter still lives, he left their encounter feeling like a failure. So Norman seeks out someone else who has tried and failed to be Spider-Man. But Ben Reilly doesn’t want to share the same universe, let alone the same airspace, with Norman Osborn. And he’s far from alone in that sentiment.

While Ben impersonates Peter in Amazing Spider-Man #14, his growing closeness to Dr Maira Osmani-Milton drives his girlfriend crazy. Janine Godbe enjoys life in the shadows with Ben. Now he is chasing Peter's life again, and that's beyond frustrating.

While endangering his future with Janine, Ben shuts out the people who care about Peter. Aunt May feels cut off from the successful working nephew who hung photos in her living room when he was bombing interviews. And at work, Brian Nehring isn't feeling freaktastic as his childhood chum’s science outshines his mycoteria.

While Joe Kelly’s story urges us to understand what drives us, it also contrasts life in the shadows with exposing our actions to the light of day. Night patrols gave Norman the anonymity to act out his aggressions. Imitating Peter solely at Rand allows Ben to hurt everyone close to him. But people who exercise power responsibly inspire others. That's something a would-be hero learns in Amazing Spider-Man #14.

Art

Ed McGuinness & Todd Nauck, Mark Farmer, and Wade Von Grawbadger contrast memories of the Spider-Society on a rooftop with Norman sitting alone in his exclusive penthouse. Janine’s masks feed her desire for easy victories but provide no lasting contentment. As Maira sits before an image of sunflowers, she makes a more understanding and accepting comparison with Peter’s not-girlfriend. Yet despite her words, Maira’s disdain for Norman struggles to dominate her face, suggesting a familiar jousting tournament with a business rival.

Marcio Menyz and Erick Arciniega make Chasm and Hallows Eve look good together in purple, orange, red, and green. Maira and Ben’s blue attire emphasizes the growing connection between them. Norman’s dark gray suit seems a reminder that his self-esteem, if not his body, is trapped in the dark web of Limbo. An attacker's light gray and blue emphasize a cold, clinical approach to curing a disease. While the yellow and orange coursing across his body evoke Hellgate's inner fire, Kintsugi's gleaming suit recalls another cosmic hero.

Joe Caramagna fills white dialogue balloons with black uppercase dialogue. Words grow bold for inflection, enlarge for raised voices, and shrink for lowered voices. Faint lowercase handprinted letters reveal Norman's thoughts in irregular white rectangles, while Aunt May writes in tiny cursive. Sound effects hail a pleasant outing, a responsible use of power, and defiant dry-thwipping in Amazing Spider-Man #14. Thanks to Marvel for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

While Norman Osborn struggles to overcome his past, Roderick Kingsley makes new friends, Brian Nehring gets desperate, and Astrid reveals a fondness for Battlestar Galactica in Amazing Spider-Man #14.

Rating 9/10
