Zero Instance #2 Preview

Artificial Intelligence just keeps getting better and better. Rhys may not like the Interview Bot at his uncle's work. Still, his parents have a robot assistant in their home. And Spencer Reed, the Lead Encounter Designer at Horizon Games, has coded an Evolving Boss AI for Braxir Hex, the lord of Blood Moon Tower. He sold the update as being unwinnable. That only adds to the allure.

Rhys beat the game once. He believes he can do so again. But when Rhys and his fellowship return to Blood Moon Tower, they discover that Braxir Hex has learned from their previous encounter. And instead of sacrificing his life so viewers will like and subscribe to Rhys' livestream, Braxir Hex is setting his sights on brighter horizons. What has Braxir done to Rhys' friend Chris? And what has Spencer Reed unleashed on the world?

Here's all the info from Horizon Games and Comixology:

Many have tried to storm Blood Moon Tower. But thus far, no one has ever succeeded. As a new band of adventurers gathers, Rhys vows that this time, they will breach its defenses. A Human and an Elf in the fellowship wonder if it is possible. But when Rhys raises his flaming sword, the band charges toward the dark tower. Can these adventurers succeed where so many others have failed? And how does Braxir Hex, the lord of Blood Moon Tower, threaten their world? Let’s leap into Zero Instance #1 and see!

Story

Monsters guard the castle. More dangers lurk inside its walls. Chris almost loses sight of their objective. When they reach the inner sanctum, Rhys demonstrates how effectively he planned the raid. But then buzzing fills the air, and Rhys must leave his company of warriors to enjoy the fruits of their victory.

But this is not the end of the end of Rhys' adventures. In Zero Instance #1, another world beckons. His father worries that Rhys is spending too much time immersed in games and not enough time building a future. His mother also wants him to find a career that she can understand and respect. Yet Rhys is fulfilled. His online followers support his gaming. Rhys can pay his bills and get by. And then, he has a big event planned. If his friend Chris can set it up and market it effectively, Rhys' second attack on Braxir Hex could do wonders for his career.

Frank J Barbiere and Stephen Rhodes’ story tackles the allure of online gaming. The best players can secure lucrative careers by pursuing their beloved pastime. But while Rhys’ parents want to support his vision, the engineers at Horizon Games don’t. They designed Braxir Hex to be unbeatable. And that means that the villain can learn and adapt like a real person. But while they expect the players to exploit loopholes in their games, none suspect that their creation could endanger their world in Zero Instance #1.

Art

While demons guard the gate, soldiers stand between the crenelations atop Blood Moon Tower. Sorcerous fire burns above the tower while lightning crackles through the blood-red sky. Braxir Hex works raw energy with his hands before a red forge, a smile on his skull-like face. Rhys inspires his fellow Human, Elf, and Dwarf adventurers. Yet the Dwarf and a woman with a glowing eye lead the charge while Rhys brings up the rear in their assault on the castle.

Lauren Affe adorns Vic Malhotra’s fantasy art with contrasting primary colors in Zero Instance #1. Yellow energy electrifies the reds and blues of Blood Moon Tower, while the world around Rhys sinks into gray. He slumps as he prepares for an interview. Then, sinking into a chair, he covers his face with his hands. On what should be his big day, Rhys smiles at the corporate greeter. Yet green links the dangers of conventional life with his fantasy life.

Taylor Esposito fills white dialogue balloons with black uppercase letters. Braxir’s dialogue balloons feature small, bold letters surrounded by gray borders. Like the corporate world he despises, lowercase texts also inhabit gray boxes. Yellow boxes identify places and people, while the sounds of battle can only be banished by a buzzing phone. Final Thoughts

While the real world continually presents obligations, the virtual world helps Rhys' spirit soar. Zero Instance #1 explores the opportunities and dangers of technological progress for a bracing science fiction and fantasy read.

Video Game Writers Frank Barbiere and Stephen Rhodes Level Up with

ZERO INSTANCE, a Video Game Thriller

Drawn by Vic Malhotra and Eoin Marron

Zero Instance Begins Summer 2026 Exclusively From Comixology Originals

A routine raid in a popular MMO video game takes a deadly turn in Zero Instance, an exciting new five-issue sci-fi thriller comic book series from acclaimed storyteller and video game writer Frank Barbiere (Astonishing Times) and award-winning game writer and comics newcomer Stephen Rhodes, making his creator-owned debut with the series. Featuring art by Vic Malhotra issues #1-2 and Eoin Marron issues #3-5, colors by Lauren Affe, letters by Taylor Esposito and covers by Vic Malhotra, Zero Instance begins July 14, 2026. The series will be available exclusively from Amazon’s Comixology Originals digital content line.

“I’ve always been a huge fan of comics, but I only started experimenting with it as a creative outlet in recent years. After working on some tie-in comics for a video game project, I absolutely fell in love with the format and how creatively liberating it is," said Stephen Rhodes. "Getting to work with my long-time friend and collaborator, Frank Barbiere, has been incredible. We have both spent many years working in video game development, so it was fun to draw on that experience within the story. Zero Instance emerged as a result of our love of video games as a medium and explores where the future of interactivity could be heading in the not-too-distant future."

Zero Instance starts with a bang as the final boss escapes the screen and bleeds into the real world.

Rhys, a directionless college grad thought logging into his favorite MMO was just another raid with his friends, but they are shocked to find their boss fight glitching. When Chris—his best friend—doesn’t log out, Rhys is forced to confront a terrifying truth: the lines between game and reality are vanishing. As an experimental AI known as Braxir begins to manipulate smart systems, twist human behavior, and build a base of operations in the real world, Rhys must decide if he’s ready to lead when the game is over—and the stakes are real.

Zero Instance was born out of a shared love of tense thrillers, MMOs, and game development, and I’m so excited to be telling this story with fantastic collaborators," says Frank Barbiere. "I’m honored to be co-writing with my friend Stephen Rhodes in his first creator-owned comic series, and our art team of Vic Malhotra, Eoin Marron, and Lauren Affe have given the series a defining look that comic fans from across genres will love. The whole project is wrapped together with the fantastic lettering of Taylor Esposito and design from Dylan Todd, and I can’t wait for readers to get their hands on it!”

Rhodes continued, "I am incredibly grateful to our art team of Vic Malhotra, Eoin Marron, and Lauren Affe who have truly brought the story to life with vibrant and evocative art that I think people will really enjoy. The fantastic lettering of Taylor Esposito and design from Dylan Todd, ties everything together and makes the story engaging and clear. I cannot wait for the release of Zero Instance and I hope people enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.”
