Relationships can be confusing. Catwoman may have invited Black Canary into the Sirens' circle. But while Selina's relationship with Bruce Wayne may irritate Pamela Isley, Dinah is marrying a billionaire who represents everything wrong with the world. Then, Harley's faux pas at Dinah's bachelorette party really ruffles Poison Ivy's leaves. But none of that was nothing compared with Dinah's betrayal of the woman who has guided her every step toward the altar.

Tini Howard & Babs Tarr spoke about their new series, Sirens: Love Hurts, during the DC Comics: What's Next panel at WonderCon 2026. Their happiness to be there, and their enthusiasm for the series, was undeniable. Here's a little of what they had to say about their latest project together:

 

 

From the moment she heard about this upcoming series, Babs Tarr wanted to draw it. Sirens: Love Hurts seemed like a dream project. Tini Howard worked hard to include bouncy dialogue that would draw in readers. She also designed the series to resonate with fans of Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and Black Canary, whether they fell in love with them via comics or animated TV shows. Tini and Babs associated the ladies with the four seasons, imbuing the crime-solving quartet with a sense of completeness. 

 

 

 

 

By placing Sirens: Love Hurts under its Black Label, DC Comics gave Tini and Babs more creative freedom. Tini and Babs drew inspiration from The Long Halloween. And without having to structure it as an ongoing series, they could give the series a decisive beginning, middle, and end. As Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and Black Canary have such different styles, Babs associated each character with a particular fashion house. 

 

 

 

 

Three issues in, Tini Howard and Babs Tarr are getting good feedback. Fans of the characters are telling them how much Sirens: Love Hurts means to them. That’s exciting and meaningful to Tini and Babs, as this was a very personal project for them. While Sirens: Love Hurts celebrates Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and Black Canary's camaraderie, the series also celebrates Tini and Babs' friendship.

Tini Howard & Blake Howard on Comics Collaboration

 

Tini Howard & Blake Howard on Comics Collaboration

 

Writers. Artists. Colorists. Letterers. Few people do everything equally well. Most of us excel in one area but need help with the rest. So, at WonderCon 2026, husband and wife team Blake and Tini Howard led a panel on collaborating in comics.

 

When they considered who you might want to collaborate with, Blake and Tini suggested looking for someone with similar tastes and a willingness to work toward the same goal. Even if you're friends with someone or admire what they do, they suggest that you never try to force someone to do something they don't want to do. It's always better to keep a friend and find another collaborator.

 

If you look around, you can often find collaborators in places you might never suspect. Tini often works on gaming projects and enjoys conducting campaigns in her spare time. During one game, she found someone who sketched out their characters and settings. Collaborator found!

 

Blake may not agree with Emperor Palpatine (or, if you prefer, Darth Sidious) in all areas of his life. Still, he urged aspiring comic creators to embrace the Sith Rule of Two. Find someone who is strong where you are weak, and weak where you are strong. Tini also added that in a good comics collaboration, each party is constantly learning from the other. 

 

 

 

 

Blake and Tini both suggested partnering with a more experienced comics creator if possible. When working with Tim Seeley on Vampire The Masquerade: Winter's Teeth, they found a mentor who proved to be a good collaborator and was humble to boot. But regardless of the level of experience, they suggest that finding someone flexible and willing to compromise is more important than their skills.

 

Still, even in the most harmonious relationships, you won't always agree on everything. So, how do you pick your battles? When Tini and Blake collaborated on a story in the Batman Urban Legends anthology series, Blake initially infused it with gothic, romantic prose. He fought for more prose and less art. Tini reminded him of the visual nature of comics. Working together, the husband-and-wife writing team trimmed the prose so readers wouldn't be overwhelmed. In their discussions, the argument was never “No.” Instead, it was “No, however…"

 

 

 

Collaboration is the oldest form of storytelling. And Blake and Tini met when they were LARPing, which involves give and take. Unlike Blake and Tini, a fellow gamer may not become a good collaborator or a beloved mate. Still, finding a talented collaborator who wants to create something special with you may not be as difficult as it seems.

Sirens: Love Hurts #2 Preview

 

Green Arrow and Black Canary wanted to glean up the mob activity in Gotham City. But when Black Canary met with Black Cat to brainstorm how to make their city safer, she didn't realize that meant drinks with Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. After Black Canary tried to lay down some ground rules for her brunch with "criminals," the Sirens stiffed her for the check. But when they found a young woman's corpse in an occult circle, and the cops seemed reluctant to investigate, each of the ladies sought clues to the murderer's identity. 

The Sirens and Black Canary may have decided to pool their resources. But their first effort was less than encouraging. Can Green Arrow's fiancée work with Black Cat, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn? And will the occult serial murderer target the lovely ladies hunting him down?
