I enjoyed attending the Oni Press panel at last year's San Diego Comic-Con. This was one of the books they announced. Jo Mi-Gyeong's art brought Maria Ingrande Mora's series Ranger Academy to life, and helped us empathize with Sage's struggles. Jo also helped Melissa Flores show us how Mark grew up on the water world of Aquitar before coming to Earth in Power Rangers Prime #6. Given Jo's impressive work for Boom! Studios, I've been looking forward to seeing more of Jo's art in this forthcoming series. Now, it's finally here: a first look inside Murder Drones #1!

Story

Before the Clerical departs, it explains that Erik inhabits the Spirit Realm. The book he holds in his hands will reveal how he lived. Erik’s memories are hazy. He believes he was a good man. But while Erik reads, the Realmkeepers will observe his story. If they judge that Erik has lived a moral life, they will let him ascend to the Sacred Realm. There, he can spend Eternity with Katrina. But before they can render their decision, Erik must recover his past.

 

When he opens the book, Erik’s memory begins to return. Each page reminds him of the man he was. He remembers meeting Katrina and how they forged a connection. Then a beast interrupts his memories, clamps the book in its jaws, and scampers away.

 

While Erik sets off on a journey to retrieve his book, Nick Cagnetti and Daniel Ziegler show what occurs in the world he left behind. Dr Hyde Perkins buries Erik in the church graveyard. While Erik seeks to find the book that offers hope of reunion with his beloved, Dr Perkins mourns his friend's death. Yet, in The Spirit of the Shadows #1, Dr Perkins wishes he had never met Erik.

 

Art

Erik appears as a young man clad in a jacket, vest, and slacks. Blonde hair tumbles down Katrina's shoulders to her bluish-white dress as she rises and embraces him. Then the green-and-yellow demon-like Clerical emerges from the ground to pull Erik down. A suit made of green burial wrappings, a white cape, and a white top hat replace Erik's clothes as he descends. Then the red-eyed Clerical hands Erik a red book. Like the gold pendant hanging from Katrina's neck, the cover bears a crescent moon. But this one is severed, as if from a lightning bolt.

 

Compared with the pastel Sacred realm, Nick Cagnetti lavishes a fluorescent palette on the Spirit realm in The Spirit of the Shadows #1. Faces gaze down, emulating mystical lords, court jesters, or perhaps the three most important people in the world from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. The pages of Erik’s life have pink outlines as their colors deepen. These glimpses of his past initially draw from the Sacred Realm’s pastels. But as Erik and Katrina meet, the colors darken, deepen, and borrow from the Spirit Realm’s fluorescent palette.

 

Black uppercase letters inhabit white dialogue balloons and colored narrative boxes. The letters grow bold for intonation, and swell for raised voices. Strong emotion or heightened volume deforms dialogue balloons, while fluttering streamers locate the reader in time and space. Music notes flow through Erik's memories, while red hearts float in dialogue balloons and dance on the wind of the Sacred Realm. Sound effects accompany the beast's vicious attacks, and Dr Perkins' unease when an unexpected visitor calls at Crescent Manor in The Spirit of the Shadows #1. Final Thoughts

Memories can prove both a blessing and a curse. Sometimes, the mind covers over memories to insulate people from trauma. Despite the pleasure and pain they bring, Erik must reclaim his lost memories if he has any hope of spending eternity with his beloved Katrina. But when an animal attacks the book of his life, Erik must reassemble it before he loses any sense of who he is in The Spirit of the Shadows #1.

Exorcism Island #4 Preview

 

 

William Friedkin's 1973 movie, "The Exorcist", excited viewers imaginations. People flocked to cinemas to see the movie, and TV stations replayed it endlessly. Even in its edited form, and watched on small, square Black & White tube TVs, the story of valiant priests trying to banish a demon from young Regan MacNeil compelled like few other movies.

Story

After watching his parents die, Bruce Wayne vowed to prevent other people from suffering the same nightmare. He embarked on his vigilante career to cure a culture corrupted by crime. But as the saying goes, you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. Like Olive Silverlock, Leo Kingsford lost his single parent to Batman. And like Olive, Leo suffered nightmares from how Batman apprehended his father.

 

While Bruce Wayne sent Olive to the prestigious Gotham Academy, Leo entered the foster system. When he feared going outside like agoraphobic researcher Daniel Toomey, Bruce Wayne earned Leo's gratitude for providing in-home schooling. But Leo's nightmare about the Batman who invaded his home and dragged his criminal father away never faded.

 

Tom Taylor weaves glimpses of Leo’s youth into Batman’s journey in Detective Comics #1105. But the focus remains on Batman as he follows up on what he has learned, confers with others protecting the city, and learns more about the boy who became the Lion. Even though he helped Leo, Bruce recognizes he altered the course of the young man’s life. But while Mr Terrific’s team furiously investigates Leo's virus and his sidekicks combat crime in Gotham, Batman learns more about his adversary.

 

As Batman shares his thoughts with the reader, he acknowledges that he has made mistakes. Yet Lois Lane’s warning returns to him. While Bruce asks others for input on his plans, his mind is working overtime, attempting to compensate for the loss of his fear. His suit may prevent him from infecting others. But Bruce Wayne remembers the bodies he found on the ship approaching Gotham, and how Leo's virus drove the people to kill each other in Detective Comics #1105.

 

Art

When Jim Gordon arrives, a uniformed officer points to an open window on the top story of an apartment complex. Gordon hangs his head as he enters. Young Leo sits cross-legged beside the couch, hugging his teddy bear. When the distraught boy attacks Gordon, a police badge nestles near Leo’s fraught features as the uniform officer places the child in a chokehold.

 

Mikel Janín lavishes a palette of blue, brown, yellow, red, and a virulent green on his, Wayne Faucher, and Norm Rapmund’s art. A softer palette shows Bruce trying to mitigate Leo’s fears as the young man tries to turn his life around. Green and beige frame scenes from Leo’s youth, while Batman evokes Bane as he strides through the present in a bulky silver and blue suit. Red gains the upper hand when another person shares their own memories of Leo, and the color joins the angry chorus of yellow and orange threatening to devour Gotham in Detective Comics #1105.

 

Wes Abbott fills white balloons with black uppercase dialogue and shares Batman’s thoughts as white uppercase letters in gray narrative boxes. Black dialogue in green balloons accompanies scenes set in the past, while Oracle's transmissions appear as dark green letters in green balloons. Sound effects highlight the dangers threatening Gotham and how Leo fought to overcome the fear the Batman instilled in his psyche. Thanks to DC Comics for providing a review copy.

 

Final Thoughts

Gotham is a scary place to live. And despite all of Batman's efforts to eradicate the criminal element from his city, Gotham still terrorizes its citizens. Bruce Wayne may work outside the law. He may have access to tools the police can only dream of using. Still, Bruce's youthful zeal to protect his city may have doomed its future in Detective Comics #1105.
