The Whisper War #5 Preview

Alex Jindari used to be a police officer. Then one day, he abandoned his planet to mine asteroids, and he never knew why. When the Algo selected him to solve a murder, Alex returned to Imprimata with Inspector Seeva Dessin. Their search for the truth led them to the Monks who tend the Algo. After Seeva's mysterious death, the Monks sent Alex to the Barren Reaches, a zone forbidden by royal decree. There, Alex met the man who attacked him when he investigated the murder scene. He also met Cassandra, who explained the reasons for Seeva's death, and why she killed him on Imprimata.

Time travel has created many paradoxes in Alex Jindari's life. But perhaps most troubling is all the different versions of himself that exist. And they all fight in a vast and unending war that few people outside that time stream are aware of. Can Alex find a way to bring peace to his troubled planet? And can he reunite with the woman who was once his wife?

The Whisper War #4 Preview

After learning that Seeva Dessin pushed him from the Cloudbreaker tower, someone shoots the Carabinieri inspector. Yet it seemed an impossible assassination, with no one nearby and no line-of-sight. Alex Jindari’s quest for answers takes him to the Barren Reaches, a forbidden zone closed by royal decree. There Alex meets Veydris, the feral man who attacked him in the Cloudbreaker tower. Alex also meets a woman who explains why his decision to leave the police force on Imprimata to mine asteroids has never made sense to him.

Imprimata relies on the Triamonds Alex mines to power their society. Yet the Triamonds also make time travel possible. The Algo, the artificial intelligence that governs his planet, selected Alex to investigate his own murder for a reason. Will Alex meet the Parliament who constantly rewrite history, so people don’t realize that a time war is currently under way? And can Alex find a way to end the war that has wiped out a third of Imprimata’s population?

The Whisper War #3 Preview

Alex Jindari is a fish out of water. He left the police to mine asteroids. Then the Algo selected him to investigate a murder. From what little was left of the body after falling from a Cloudbreaker tower, the Automic determined the victim’s identity. But it makes no sense. How can Alex be investigating his own murder?

Pursuing the case further sparks phantom memories. And the Algo makes Alex jump through hoops to recover footage from an Omnicam. But if discovering the murder victim’s identity was traumatic, seeing who hurled him out of the Cloudbreaker tower seems insane. How can Alex be both dead and alive? And why would Inspector Seeva Dessin, his beautiful Carabinieri partner, kill his double?

Alex Jindari left the police. Then he abandoned his planet to mine asteroids. But when the Algo chooses him to investigate a murder, Alex becomes a temporary member of the elite Carabinieri. Returning to the city he thought he had left behind forever, Alex investigates a mysterious fall from a Cloudbreaker alongside Inspector Seeva Dessin.

Given how far the person fell, the Automic doesn’t have a body to study. So, Jasper conducts retroactive genetic expression analysis on the puddle found in the impact crater. Can Alex and Seeva discern between murder and suicide? And can Jasper throw any light on the faller’s identity? Let's leap into The Whisper War #2 and see!

Story

The Algo selected Alex to investigate the mysterious death. But instead of reluctantly obeying, Alex throws himself into the investigation. He risks his life to discover the truth about the victim. In the upper levels of a Cloudbreaker tower, Alex finds a man among the servers. The resultant fight doesn’t go Alex’s way. When he returns to Inspector Seeva Dessin, Jasper announces that his Retroactive Genetic Expression Analysis has identified the victim from the remains. Alex doesn’t like the Automic’s announcement.

After giving him a moment to assess what he’s learned, Seeva confers with Alex. He argues that Jasper's assertion cannot be true. But Seeva insists that Jasper is functioning properly, and the Automic’s results are beyond question. In The Whisper War #2, Alex is investigating his own murder. So, Seeva accompanies Alex back to the upper level of the Cloudbreaker from which the victim fell, and the stranger attacked him. When they assess what they learn there, Alex dislikes where the clues point them.

Marc Guggenheim’s story reveals more of Alex’s world. It shows how the Algo treats criminals and what the civilization values. The murder investigation hints at the memories that Alex and Seeva have forgotten. Mystery and violence pervade this society that has forgotten a civil war. But it is also highly stratified. And as in our world, the elite play games with the law.

Art

Strands of long hair fall across Alex's face. But they cannot obscure the scar that runs diagonally across his face. Like his clothing, Alex's clothing and hair suggest a warlord. Although she is his superior, Alex Jindari's expression and body language suggest he holds power over Inspector Seeva Dessin in The Whisper War #2.

Carlos Cabrera paints luminous colors over the darkened world of Imprimata. Sedat Oezgen’s cloudbreaker towers and the labyrinth of servers glow yellow, equating the computing power of this future world with the sunlight that invigorates the natural world. As Seeva’s bulletship etches a trail of fire across the night sky, she and Alex glow yellow in the cockpit as they boldly go where the clues lead them. Green may paint Alex's memories. But his jacket and the reflection caught in Jasper's red faceplate remind us of the body turned to goo by a fall from the cloudbreaker in The Whisper War #2.

Dave Sharpe places black uppercase letters in white dialogue balloons, and Alex's thoughts in green-and-white narrative boxes. The dialogue grows bold for intonation, enlarges for intense emotion, and never shrinks. The sounds of combat multiply as red letters in a black panel. White letters hover in the air when Alex and Seeva dare to interview a supreme authority. Thanks to Comixology and Superfan Promotions for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Alex didn’t want to leave his new job mining asteroids, but when Inspector Seeva Dessin requested his aid, he came. When she shared her evidence, he risked his life to obtain more. Seeva has an uncanny ability to connect with Alex, and they function well as a team. But amid the mysteries swirling through The Whisper War #2, whether Seeva and Alex will survive the investigation seems anything but certain.

Once, Alex Jindari was a police officer. He helped uphold law and order on Imprimata. But something prompted him to abandon his career and his world. Why did Alex exile himself from society to mine asteroids? And how does he enjoy working for the Lexan Mining Corporation? Let's put on our spacesuits, leap into The Whisper War #1, and see!

Story

Alex lives on Orbital Staging Station G11. Each day, as Alex straps on his spacesuit, drops down to an asteroid on a tether, and begins drilling, the unreality of his situation hits him. He used to be a cop. Alex guesses his work was important. He supposes that he left the police force before one of the criminals he tried to apprehend shot him. But when Alex looks in a mirror, he sees a scar he doesn’t remember receiving.

In The Whisper War #1, Alex inhabits a world ruled by Artificial Intelligence. When a Carabinieri Inspector requests his help, Alex has no option but to comply. The Algo identified him as the person most likely to solve a murder. So, reluctantly, Alex returns to his homeworld with Inspector Seeva Dessin.

After introducing the sweeping events that shaped Alex’s section of the galaxy, Marc Guggenheim's mystery follows Alex's investigation through his eyes. As Seeva ushers Alex into the Carabinieri headquarters, Alex yearns to impress her. The Inspector has a strange way of compelling him to tell her things he wouldn't ordinarily share with strangers. While Alex finds Seeva amenable to his requests, the medical examiner maintains a professional distance from the outsider. After all, Alex is no longer a cop. And he was never a member of the prestigious Carabinieri.

As Alex investigates a mysterious death on Imprimata, he throws himself into danger. The former cop who prides himself on getting out before a criminal shot him risks his life to determine if the person who fell from a building 500 stories high was pushed or leapt. But his bravery isn’t the only reason the Algo selected him, as the robot medical examiner discovers in The Whisper War #1.

Art

As warships cruise between planets, assault craft soar over cities. Soldiers die amid explosions or kill each other with knives and swords. Then Sedat Oezgen rockets to the present day, where Alex dons a spacesuit that evokes plate armor. Harnessed to the space station by a tether, he descends to an asteroid pitted with craters. Then, Alex uses his jackhammer-like drill to dig for gemstones.

Like the mother-of-pearl nugget Alex unearths, nearby planets glow with violet, turquoise, lavender. While light infuses the orbital station’s corridors, yellow and orange dominate The Whisper War #1. They color the air in the cabin of Seeva’s ship as it hurtles through Imprimata’s atmosphere. Elevated highways wind between skyscrapers gleaming with yellow and orange windows as the craft descends. But as the interior lights of Carabinieri HQ illuminate the vast lobby and crowded examination room, they recall a battlefield where an explosion ripped soldiers apart. And as Alex and Seeva interact with Jasper, their faces stare back at them from the medical examiner's orange visor.

Dave Sharpe places black uppercase letters in white dialogue balloons, and Alex's thoughts in green-and-white narrative boxes. The dialogue grows bold for intonation, enlarges for intense emotion, and never shrinks. Sound effects enhance the action as Alex follows up a lead and makes a discovery. But the medical examiner's dialogue boxes with lightning bolt arrows seem destined to prevent the robot from trusting the cop who abandoned his brothers in blue. Thanks to Comixology and Superfan Promotions for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

After surviving an event that could destroy civilization, the people of Imprimata get on with their lives. People like Alex Jindari pursue different professions and wonder why they left their former occupations behind. But when a society chooses to forget a traumatic event, remembering what happened and how society recovered leads to murder in The Whisper War #1.

When a series of kidnappings rocks Cowtown, Cowpital City sends help. But as Marshall Moo Montana steps off the train, he finds more trouble than he was looking for. Mayor Bulloney’s announcement of a tax hike hasn’t gone down like a cold glass of Lily Bovine's Sarsaparilla. But the Mayor appeases the crowd by pointing out Moo and promising that the Marshall will capture the kidnapper. Can Marshall Moo Montana find the kidnapped populace? And what dirty swine is abducting the good folks of Cowtown? Let's pull on our boots, leap into Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa #1, and see!

Story

Mayor Bulloney may have greeted Marshall Moo Montana with a smile. But when they reach the Sheriff’s office, he confides that he didn’t request help. Instead, the authorities in Cowpital City imposed Moo on him. Nor does Deputy Terrorbull want Moo there. In the Sheriff’s absence, Terrorbull wants to take charge. Moo urges Bulloney and Terrorbull to remain calm while they investigate the mysterious disappearances.

Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa #1 reveals the history of Moo Mesa. Matt Hotson explains how some of the animals roaming wild and free in the Grand Cownyon gained intelligence, while others did not. Moreover, it reveals how Moo Montana became the calm, thoughtful Marshal he is today. The debut issue introduces a host of colorful characters, including Lily Bovine, Cody Calf, Jack Rabbit, and Buffalo Bill. It also portrays differing approaches to leadership and how those who seek power may wield it unwisely.

Marshall Moo Montana faces a difficult task in Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa #1. He will face a superior adversary. Yet perhaps the most onerous aspect of the case is how personal it is for him. Not only does he know one of the kidnapping victims, but she also helped him become the Marshall he is today. And as Moo investigates her disappearance, he must work alongside Deputy Terrorbull, who reminds him of a time when he was fueled by bluster and anxious for recognition of his importance.

Art

A giant bovine, carved by either the elements or by hooves, rises amid a red rock canyon. While Moo Montana sets cans atop a wooden beam, Sheriff Marey Quine leans against the fence. Moo looks sullen while Marey smiles. But her features grow stern as she whips out her golden gun and shoots. As Juan Gedeon reduces the pair to silhouettes, a ram drives his frightened donkey to the breaking point. But it's his wooden wagon that breaks after it somersaults. And the spinning objects that hurtled after it become rascally armadillos wielding red revolvers.

Moo Montana reclines in the plush, upholstered cabin as the train pulls into Cowtown. After debarking to collect his horse, Moo strides through the dirt street between brown, wood-frame buildings. The Marshal’s orange slacks and green shirt show off his muscles. His blonde hair peeks out from his brown hat as a mouse hands him a newspaper. Carlos Cabrera applies a loaded palette of vibrant colors to Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa #1. Yet the longhorn Deputy’s muscular hide glows like a red-hot poker, as Terrorbull stands atop a wooden platform. Beside him, the well-dressed Mayor clutches a megaphone.

Amid battles, high-speed pursuits, rabblerousing, and tense confrontations, Jeff Powell fills white balloons with black, uppercase dialogue. The words grow bold for intonation, and balloon shapes grow spiky with intensity. While sound effects accompany snoozing, train whistles blowing, and bovine escapades, a newspaper headline turns Moo’s first day in Cowtown into a rude awakening. Thanks to Oni Press for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Everyone needs rules to live by. For Marshall Moo Montana, it's the Code of the West. He understands the high spirits that drive people to take the law into their hands. A society that protects the downtrodden and fosters fairness requires a cool head and an adherence to the Code. That's what he'll try to communicate to the citizens of Cowtown, as Marshall Moo Montana searches for his missing mentor in Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa #1.
