Story

The Algo selected Alex to investigate the mysterious death. But instead of reluctantly obeying, Alex throws himself into the investigation. He risks his life to discover the truth about the victim. In the upper levels of a Cloudbreaker tower, Alex finds a man among the servers. The resultant fight doesn’t go Alex’s way. When he returns to Inspector Seeva Dessin, Jasper announces that his Retroactive Genetic Expression Analysis has identified the victim from the remains. Alex doesn’t like the Automic’s announcement.

 

After giving him a moment to assess what he’s learned, Seeva confers with Alex. He argues that Jasper's assertion cannot be true. But Seeva insists that Jasper is functioning properly, and the Automic’s results are beyond question. In The Whisper War #2, Alex is investigating his own murder. So, Seeva accompanies Alex back to the upper level of the Cloudbreaker from which the victim fell, and the stranger attacked him. When they assess what they learn there, Alex dislikes where the clues point them.

 

Marc Guggenheim’s story reveals more of Alex’s world. It shows how the Algo treats criminals and what the civilization values. The murder investigation hints at the memories that Alex and Seeva have forgotten. Mystery and violence pervade this society that has forgotten a civil war. But it is also highly stratified. And as in our world, the elite play games with the law.

 

Art

Strands of long hair fall across Alex's face. But they cannot obscure the scar that runs diagonally across his face. Like his clothing, Alex's clothing and hair suggest a warlord. Although she is his superior, Alex Jindari's expression and body language suggest he holds power over Inspector Seeva Dessin in The Whisper War #2.

 

Carlos Cabrera paints luminous colors over the darkened world of Imprimata. Sedat Oezgen’s cloudbreaker towers and the labyrinth of servers glow yellow, equating the computing power of this future world with the sunlight that invigorates the natural world. As Seeva’s bulletship etches a trail of fire across the night sky, she and Alex glow yellow in the cockpit as they boldly go where the clues lead them. Green may paint Alex's memories. But his jacket and the reflection caught in Jasper's red faceplate remind us of the body turned to goo by a fall from the cloudbreaker in The Whisper War #2.

 

Dave Sharpe places black uppercase letters in white dialogue balloons, and Alex's thoughts in green-and-white narrative boxes. The dialogue grows bold for intonation, enlarges for intense emotion, and never shrinks. The sounds of combat multiply as red letters in a black panel. Final Thoughts

Alex didn’t want to leave his new job mining asteroids, but when Inspector Seeva Dessin requested his aid, he came. When she shared her evidence, he risked his life to obtain more. Seeva has an uncanny ability to connect with Alex, and they function well as a team. But amid the mysteries swirling through The Whisper War #2, whether Seeva and Alex will survive the investigation seems anything but certain.

Story

Alex lives on Orbital Staging Station G11. Each day, as Alex straps on his spacesuit, drops down to an asteroid on a tether, and begins drilling, the unreality of his situation hits him. He used to be a cop. Alex guesses his work was important. He supposes that he left the police force before one of the criminals he tried to apprehend shot him. But when Alex looks in a mirror, he sees a scar he doesn’t remember receiving.

 

In The Whisper War #1, Alex inhabits a world ruled by Artificial Intelligence. When a Carabinieri Inspector requests his help, Alex has no option but to comply. The Algo identified him as the person most likely to solve a murder. So, reluctantly, Alex returns to his homeworld with Inspector Seeva Dessin.

 

After introducing the sweeping events that shaped Alex’s section of the galaxy, Marc Guggenheim's mystery follows Alex's investigation through his eyes. As Seeva ushers Alex into the Carabinieri headquarters, Alex yearns to impress her. The Inspector has a strange way of compelling him to tell her things he wouldn't ordinarily share with strangers. While Alex finds Seeva amenable to his requests, the medical examiner maintains a professional distance from the outsider. After all, Alex is no longer a cop. And he was never a member of the prestigious Carabinieri.

 

As Alex investigates a mysterious death on Imprimata, he throws himself into danger. The former cop who prides himself on getting out before a criminal shot him risks his life to determine if the person who fell from a building 500 stories high was pushed or leapt. But his bravery isn’t the only reason the Algo selected him, as the robot medical examiner discovers in The Whisper War #1.

 

Art

As warships cruise between planets, assault craft soar over cities. Soldiers die amid explosions or kill each other with knives and swords. Then Sedat Oezgen rockets to the present day, where Alex dons a spacesuit that evokes plate armor. Harnessed to the space station by a tether, he descends to an asteroid pitted with craters. Then, Alex uses his jackhammer-like drill to dig for gemstones.

 

Like the mother-of-pearl nugget Alex unearths, nearby planets glow with violet, turquoise, lavender. While light infuses the orbital station’s corridors, yellow and orange dominate The Whisper War #1. They color the air in the cabin of Seeva’s ship as it hurtles through Imprimata’s atmosphere. Elevated highways wind between skyscrapers gleaming with yellow and orange windows as the craft descends. But as the interior lights of Carabinieri HQ illuminate the vast lobby and crowded examination room, they recall a battlefield where an explosion ripped soldiers apart. And as Alex and Seeva interact with Jasper, their faces stare back at them from the medical examiner's orange visor.

 

Dave Sharpe places black uppercase letters in white dialogue balloons, and Alex's thoughts in green-and-white narrative boxes. The dialogue grows bold for intonation, enlarges for intense emotion, and never shrinks. Sound effects enhance the action as Alex follows up a lead and makes a discovery. But the medical examiner's dialogue boxes with lightning bolt arrows seem destined to prevent the robot from trusting the cop who abandoned his brothers in blue. Final Thoughts

After surviving an event that could destroy civilization, the people of Imprimata get on with their lives. People like Alex Jindari pursue different professions and wonder why they left their former occupations behind. But when a society chooses to forget a traumatic event, remembering what happened and how society recovered leads to murder in The Whisper War #1.

Story

Adventurers, researchers, and scholars gather in the plush Chicago club surrounded by historic artifacts. But Professor Kirowan is more interested in books. Specifically, he is interested in a symbol Francis Xavier Gordon drew in a journal. Professor Kirowan and his friend saw the symbol in the excavated ruins of a Stygian city. They want Gordon, or El Borak, to tell them more about it.  

 

Conan battled the Aquilonians when they erected a fort in Cimmeria at Venarium. Now, he defends their fort in the Pict-held lands at Conajohara. Valannus, the commander of Fort Tuscelan, views Conan little better than the savages who defy their civilized invaders. Other Aquilonians agree. While Conan is a fierce fighter, a sigil inscribed on stone drives him into a berserker-like rage. He found the disk of carved stone on a dead Pict. So, like the Eye of the Serpent and the Wheel of Pain pendant, Conan slipped it around his neck. As with the emblem of two serpents facing each other, the symbol plagues his mind. Conan’s lapses of control worry him. While others sleep, Conan slips out of Fort Tuscelan and ventures into Pict territory. Perhaps there, Conan will learn why the Pict wore the symbol, and why it drives him into a killing frenzy.

 

 

 

Long after the Hyborian Age, James Alison sits at his desk in Conan: Battle of the Black Stone #1. He writes tall tales of warriors and wanderers and sells his stories to magazines. As Alison doesn’t share his stories’ origins, or use the title A Million Little Pieces, his editors assume he makes them up. But every time he writes, an ancient symbol burns in his mind.

 

As they sit together at The Wanderers Club, Francis Xavier Gordon’s good humor fades. El Borak faced his fears as he defended a kidnapped chief’s son in a cursed temple. Now, he dissembles. Then he admits the truth. The symbol plagues him. Unlike Harry Potter, he fears any mention of it will increase its power. 

 

 

 

In Jim Zub’s story, the symbol of the Black Stone calls to people across space and time. It propels them on journeys. It calls them to battle. And it fires their imaginations. Professor Kirowan wants to learn its power. El Borak fears that the symbol will provoke a war to end all wars. He’s already lived through one. He doesn’t want to provoke another.

 

 

 

Art

Fog rises from the car-choked street as rays from the setting sun stream between the stone buildings lining the street. The golden light makes a gargoyle glow as silhouettes ascend stairs in Conan: Battle of the Black Stone #1. A woman leads the men into a museum illuminated a skylight-ceiling. The largest artifacts stand on an upper floor. More hang on the wall. The smallest reside within glass globes atop wooden pedestals. Then the richly adorned background fades as El Borak, his black tie hanging loose beneath his white tuxedo, welcomes the black tuxedoed visitors.

 

 

 

Men in monochromatic formal attire make ladies in pink and lavender dresses shine amid the rich yellows and browns of The Wanderers Club. Conan and fellow defenders sport rosy flesh while a yellow and orange fire rages inside the fort. They enter, and as Conan and another brawl before the bonfire, the other soldiers become fade to black. Amid the rich textures and bright colors suffusing Conan: Battle of the Black Stone #1, none shine brighter than green. After holding the disk of stone in his hand, green radiates from Conan as he lays beneath a black starry sky. The green symbol hovers above him. Soon, that same green glow will surround other Howardian heroes. And for one, the fire it radiates will threaten to consume him.

 

 

 

Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith conjure black uppercase words into white dialogue balloons and green narrative boxes. Stately white letters announce time and location. No sound effects invade Jonas Scharf’s art, even when Conan wages a fierce battle against those who call Conajohara their own. But the symbol João Canola colors green prompts Conan to utter large colorful dialogue in Conan: Battle of the Black Stone #1. Final Thoughts

An ancient symbol speaks to people across space and time. It drives Conan and Dark Agnes into savage rages. It intrigues Kirowan and Conrad, fires a Texas writer’s imagination and sends Soloman Kane on a quest. Conan undertakes the most dangerous journey and makes the strangest discovery in Conan: Battle of the Black Stone #1.
