Mead and Stix have worked together for a long time. Yet ever since Sayo asked them to find her sister Miyuki, Mead and Stix have been moving in different directions. Now, while Madame Nomura commissions Mead to investigate her daughters' deaths, Stix protects the Cheshire scientists who killed his fellow Replicants to eliminate Tyrell's programmed lifespan.

Leaving Tokyo behind, the Blade Runner from Los Angeles searches for answers in a village protected by a modern-day Ronin. As she searches for the experimental Aurora program, Rumiko seeks to learn how Miyuki and Sayo's brother produced a Replicant assassin with a copy of Stix's consciousness. Yet no matter what they do, or where they go, Alura’s shadow covers all of them.

Can Rumiko shut down the Aurora program before more copies of Stix begin killing people? And will Mead's investigation prevent the Cheshire scientists from extending Stix's life? Let’s leap into Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: To Lose is to Win #3 and see!

Story

After Mead and Stix left Boot Camp, they traveled to Kalanthia, where they met other participants in the Aurora program. By sharing Stix’s thoughts, Mead drew close to her Replicant partner. Some, like Munro and Nuri, went even further, filing paperwork to formalize their workplace relationship. But none of that mattered to the Tyrell Corporation. Once they demonstrated the merits of the Aurora program on Kalanthia, the company didn’t want the participants to leave the battlefield.

As Mead looks back on her past, she also pursues her investigation into Miyuki Nomura’s murder in Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: To Lose is to Win #3. She knows how Sayo, who originally commissioned her to find Miyuki, died. But the autopsy files Madame Nomura left with her make Mead reconsider her belief that Takumi Nomura used a Replicant with Stix’s consciousness to kill his sisters.

While Mead weighs what she's learned and how it affects her and Stix's relationship with Alura, Rumiko meets with Benkei in Nancy A Collins’ story. While Yakuza families like Alura’s carve out their territories in Tokyo, Daimyos rule distant villages as modern-day feudal lords. When she meets with Benkei at the Hikawa Shinto Shrine in Omiya, the Ronin has no reason to believe that she’s not just another assassin sent by a Daimyo to take over the village. And when Benkei learns that she is a Blade Runner, Rumiko must convince him that she is on Mead and Stix's side. Only then may he help her investigate how the Cheshire scientists used a Replicant with Stix's body and memories to help Alura with a Yakuza war in Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: To Lose is to Win #3.

Art

Torches mark a path through the snow as Rumiko trudges uphill toward a shrine. The Blade Runner's long coat contrasts with the historic armor strapped to Benkei's body. As the desk lamp illuminates the papers covering her desk, inset panels reveal Mead’s theory about Miyuki’s death. When she walks wearily toward the bedroom, Mead glances at Stix. Then, she stares at a photo on the wall.

As Mariano Taibo reveals Mead and Stix’s past, and Rumiko confronts Benkei, Marco Lesko applies a limited palette to Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: To Lose is to Win #3. Benkei’s red armor links with his face paint, while red also tinges Mead’s musings. In her imaginings, Miyuki’s pink garment links with the blanket covering Mead’s sleeping partner. Green adorns life on Kalanthia while foliage defies the snow blanketing Omiya. Yet red flows in both the past and the present.

Jim Campbell uses colored boxes to mark locations, reveal Mead and Rumiko’s thoughts, and help readers hear broadcast messages. Black uppercase dialogue in white balloons grows bold for intonation and swells for raised voices. Sound effects presage a discovery that will haunt Mead and Stix forever, while a sticker assures that Tyrell values the new life it creates. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

After natural disasters destroyed Japan’s infrastructure, corporations helped the country rebuild. While Tokyo enjoys the benefits, the surrounding prefectures return to their traditional ways. In theory, corporations like Tyrell, Cheshire, and Yuyona should make life easier for everyone. But while corporate executives and Yakuza leaders fight for profits, people like Mead, Stix, Rumiko, and Benkei strive for something greater in Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: To Lose is to Win #3.

When Sayo hired Mead and Stix to find her sister Miyuki, she drew the private detectives into a war between Humans and Replicants. As Stix supported the underground Replicant community, he discovered Yakuza abducting his kind. And as Mead followed a trail of clues, a Blade Runner named Rumiko arrived in Tokyo, determined to close the Cheshire Lab churning out illegal copies of Tyrell Corp's manufactured people. But even aided by Rumiko, ex-soldier Mead couldn't prevent an illegal clone of Stix from murdering Sayo and Miyuki.

Now, Mead and Stix work for Alura, the Yakuza boss who murdered Sayo and Miyuki’s brother Takumi and has taken over their territory. Alura also safeguards the ex-Tyrell scientists who broke their Do Not Compete clause. What happens when they realize that Stix is one of their top combat models? And can Alura's scientists determine how to lengthen Stix's limited lifespan? Let’s leap into Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: To Lose is to Win #2 and see!

Story

In Takumi, Sayo, and Miyuki's absence, the rulership of the Nomura-gumi reverts to Madame Nomura. She doesn't believe her late son's assertion that he killed his sisters. Mead investigated Miyuki's death and held Sayo in her dying arms. So, Madame Nomura wants her to discover who killed her daughters.

One of the problems Replicants face is a limited lifespan. After Alura shot Takumi, Mead and Stix agreed to protect the Cheshire scientists, provided they no longer abduct replicants and experiment on them. In Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: To Lose is to Win #2, Stix learns the state of their research. For Stix and his people, it represents an important step toward eventual equality with Humans.

Nancy A Collins’ story also follows Rumiko’s pursuit of the truth. Just like Takumi tried to buy an army of Replicant assassins, Tyrell Corp ordered the Blade Runner to kill the Cheshire scientists to preserve their monopoly on Replicant production. Yet Rumiko was no one's hired killer. And as she investigated the former Tyrell scientists, she probed Mead's memories from Kalantha. In Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: To Lose is to Win #2, Rumiko's hunt for the Aurora program leads her beyond the control of the corporations that rebuilt Japan, and also supplied the machines of war on Kalantha.

Art

As Madame Nomura sits in Mead's kitchen, attended by two bodyguards, memories appear beside the private investigator. When the Yazuka matriarch shares her thoughts, Mariano Taibo tilts her face and memories 45 degrees. After an overhead shot reveals the activity in Cheshire labs, Stix lowers the hood of his cleanroom uniform. While the researchers speak with him, the Replicant imagines their experiments. And as Stix talks with the researchers, he remembers his interactions with Rumiko. The Blade Runner's exploits trace a path between images of Stix and the scientists like on a game board.

As Marco Lesko adorns Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: To Lose is to Win #2 with a varied palette of colors and tones, Mead wears green, while green fills the Cheshire labs. Mead, Madame Nomura, and Stix conjure red memories, while Stix’s yellow cleanroom suit links him with Rumiko's yellow-brown coat. The Blade Runner seeks clues to Aurora’s whereabouts, surrounded by yellow lights inside red lanterns, while glimpses of the program's beginnings appear amid green, yellow, and red.

Jim Campbell uses yellow letters to locate readers in time and space. The black uppercase letters fill white balloons and colored narrative boxes. The letters grow bold for intonation and shrink for lowered voices. Sound effects amplify how Aurora enhanced soldiers’ lives on the battlefield while threatening them in the future. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

As with many innovations, soldiers tested the Aurora program on the battlefield. Yet the program had unintended consequences for the Replicants and their Human operators. As Madame Nomura makes a bid to regain control of her Yakuza clan, readers learn more about the interloper who usurped control of her centuries-old crime family in Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: To Lose is to Win #2.

After Mead and Stix fought side by side on Kalanthia, the ex-Marine and combat Replicant set up as private investigators in Japan. But while the two former soldiers remade their lives, other military Replicants broke the Tyrell Corporation’s cardinal rule. They illegally immigrated to Earth and established an underground community in Tokyo. After years of trusting each other, Stix doesn’t tell Mead about helping the Replicant community.

When a Blade Runner from Los Angeles visits Tokyo and confronts Mead with evidence of a super Replicant assassin who employs Stix’s methods, Mead struggles to stand by her friend. Can Mead and Stix's partnership withstand their recent alliance with the Yakuza? And can Replicants rise from the underground to live peacefully among their Human neighbors? Let’s leap into Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: To Lose is to Win #1 and see!

Story

Mead and Stix forged their friendship on Kalantha, but that doesn't mean that others shared their views on Humans befriending Replicants. And while they knew the trust they shared was real, what the war on Kalantha was about was less clear. But when enemy helicopters attack just as they reach a hotly contested command bunker, it seems more than a coincidence.

Caught in an ambush, Mead and Stix activate the Aurora program in Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: To Lose is to Win #1. Then Stix sets out with the other combat Replicants to protect Mead and Sergeant Major Lancaster. But while Mead watches and advises, the stressful encounter and Stix's actions on the battlefield are destined to haunt her long after the friends leave Kalantha.

In 2015, after forging their deal with the Yakuza, Mead awakens from sleep. Her wartime memories have become nightmares. She's in a bad mood and can't stay in their Tokyo home. As Mead stumbles outside to focus on what she can do, Nancy A Collins switches the story to Stix. Replicants have a limited life span, and combat models like Stix burn out more quickly than most. But Alura's Yakuza organization protects the ex-Tyrell scientists who founded Cheshire. She has promised to help him survive his expiration date. And while Stix would do anything for Mead, she also wishes to see her partner live a long and fruitful life.

As Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: To Lose is to Win #1 forces Mead and Stix into another uncomfortable situation, Rumiko likewise faces a difficult task. Ostensibly, the Blade Runner still works for Tyrell. But instead of killing the ex-Tyrell scientists working for Cheshire, she’s hunting for Aurora. Tyrell constructed more Replicants in the Stix series. But Aurora can imbue combat Replicants with the carefully honed skills that made Mead's friend into such an effective killing machine. And like Mead and Stix, Rumiko doesn't want any more people, Replicant or Human, to end up in the garbage bin.

Art

As Mead and Stix push through the dense foliage, single-person choppers roar overhead. Sergeant Major Lancaster and his team provide cover fire as the Aurora team rushes inside the bunker. But when cracks race across the ceiling, the team hustles downstairs and exits a tunnel beneath the tree line. Yellow light pierces the leafy canopy like falling stars, as yellow light shines on the silhouette faces of the combat Replicants.

As Mariano Taibo gets Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: To Lose is to Win #1 off to a running start, Marco Lesko adorns the art on Kalantha with a limited palette. Yellow and orange blossom amid the verdant greenery, while red soon follows as Mead watches through Stix's eyes. In her Tokyo apartment, plants surround Mead. As a memory of a wall of green and white evokes natural disasters that struck Japan, a yellow, orange, and red poster recalls the conflict in Kalantha. And a green poster that Mead passes highlights that the same corporations that profited from the war on Kalantha are also helping Japan rebuild.

Jim Campbell uses narrative boxes to locate readers in time and space, while also sharing Rumiko and Mead’s reminiscences. While black uppercase dialogue fills white balloons, Stix and Mead’s thoughts fill colored balloons sans arrows when connected via Aurora. Sound effects transmit all the danger and death on Kalantha, and an unwelcome surprise in Tokyo, while an homage to a Blade Runner author greets Mead upon her return. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

As Japan recovers from natural disasters, it struggles to accept all members of society as equal contributors. Nor are Mead and Stix as close as they once were. Mead may regret taking Sayo’s case, even though Stix suspected Yakuza involvement. Still, the Private Investigators must pay the price for becoming embroiled in the struggle for Replicant equality in Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: To Lose is to Win #1.

Stix was supposed to meet Mead in a poor Tokyo district. But when he doesn't show, Mead confronts a protection racket alone and gets a meat cleaver in her leg for her troubles. As a gang member flashes a gun, Mead thinks she's finally bought it. But then Stix arrives, claiming the train was late, and helps her survive the battle. Can Mead still trust her replicant partner with her life? Or is her partnership with Stix on the rocks? Let’s leap into Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: Die In Peace and find out!

Story

After tending to Mead's injuries, the two private investigators go out for drinks and dumplings. While Stix rejoices in closing their latest case, Mead is confused. She smelled the beer and dumplings on his breath when he arrived to help her. But before she can ask what troubles him, a young woman requests their help. Mayo accompanies Mead and Stix back to their home. But when she claims her sister is a private investigator, Stix senses Yakuza involvement and bails.

In Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: Die In Peace, Stix ventures into the tunnels beneath Tokyo. Tyrell constructed replicants to live offworld. But like Stix, other replicants have snuck back to Earth after the war. While he assists those in need, Stix also meets someone from his past who warns him about a new model of replicant. Another combat-grade model like him.

Perhaps it’s the fact that Stix refused to hear Mayo's story. Or maybe Mead needs something to distract her from worrying about her partner. In any case, the former soldier agrees to help Mayo find her sister. Like Stix, Mead senses that Mayo and her sister hail from a Yakuza family. But in this city rocked by riots, and a world where Humans treat replicants as disposable property, the Yakuza represent just one more type of Human authority.

While Mead and Stix hide from their military past, a Blade Runner arrives from Los Angeles. Rumika claims she’s hunting a rogue replicant. But she takes her orders from Tyrell. From working with the refugees in the underground, Stix knows another organization has hired scientists from Tyrell. While Rumika uses her Tokyo police resources and information from Tyrell to search for Mayo’s sister, Stix strives to protect replicants from the scientists experimenting on them in Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: Die In Peace.

Art

Sunlight streams past a crazy quilt of towers to reach those wandering the crowded streets. Nature defies the metropolis, as plants, trees, and gardens fill the spaces between buildings. Plants also cling to balconies like algae, refusing to let the gray structures win. Yet banners hang down as Mead and Stix eat, while cage-like window frames fill the background. Mariano Taibo fills the world of 2015 with bulky computer monitors, brick-sized cellphones, and a '70s arcade game. And despite all the houseplants filling their residence, a maze of lines adorns the top of the walls, enhancing the straight lines of the carpet and window shades.

Stix and Mead wear long blue coats over their white dress shirts and black ties. Yet when he leaves Mead, he changes into a gray jacket. Just as on the surface, yellow and green find their way into the underground. With a green experiment table, Marco Lesko suggests a new future for replicants in Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: Die In Peace. Likewise, the orange hair of Miyuki's girlfriend links with the paper lanterns hanging over the streets, suggesting peace and rebirth. But the scarlet that spills in the opening scene, and the bodies both Private Investigators find, suggest the price Humans and Replicants will pay for their grand new society.

Jim Campbell fills white balloons with black uppercase letters and shares Mead and Stix's lowercase musings in colored narrative boxes. Sound effects emphasize Stix’s enhanced abilities, flying police spinners, high-speed trains, and a doorbell ring as a Blade Runner arrives. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Ever since Mead and Stix went AWOL and returned to Earth, everything has been clear. Stay under the radar and work cases together as Private Investigators. But suddenly, Stix is keeping secrets, and Rumiko, a Blade Runner from Los Angeles, wants to work with Mead. Just like in the war, the bodies begin to pile up. And the experimental program Mead and Stix hoped was dead and buried arises to haunt them again in Blade Runner Tokyo Nexus: Die In Peace.
