After taking Nordal Fortress, Kulan Gath killed Dorian Runebinder and awakened Ymir. The Frost Giant rode into the world, sowing chaos and reaping death.

Entrusting her aunt with her younger sister's life, Grace rides with Red Sonja toward Nordal Fortress. Can Red Sonja kill Kulan Gath before he ushers all the gods into the Hyborian world? Let's don our armor, ride into Red Sonja #9, and find out!

Story

The queen of Emberfall sent half her army to retake Nordal Fortress. A seer in the market proclaims that a man—or a woman—could protect her mountain city from the gods. Frostwind advises the queen against giving power to people in return for protection. But what else can Emberfall’s queen do? Spirits invade the land. The Frost Giant Ymir terrorizes the skies.

Runebinder, his mentor Frostwind, and Grace’s aunt formed a triad of sorcerers who guarded the woods and the mountains. Red Sonja and Grace have encountered wraiths, Tsjoko, and a Hulder in the forest. Frostwind is old. Runebinder is dead. Grace's aunt has fled. With the old order broken, gods prey on their worshippers. Men, women, and children: everyone's a target now.

In Red Sonja #9, the king of the underworld joins Ymir's Great Hunt. Erlik lacks a soul, so he hunts for one. Can someone without a soul exercise compassion and restraint?

Kulan Gath wanted back into our world. The sorcerer used Red Sonja, Thord Varg’s hunger for power, and Lady Alaberta's black diamond to return to life. But breaking the laws of the universe allowed the gods to enter the Hyborian world. Red Sonja freed Thord Varg’s army. So now Kulan Gath uses the gods to arouse fear. Killing Dorian Runebinder increased his power, but Gath wanted more. If rulers like the queen of Emberfall will not give him the power he craves, Kulan Gath will sit back and wait for the gods to cull the mortals. Who knows? Perhaps the gods will also kill each other. Either way, Gath increases his power and influence.

Torunn Gronbekk weaves blood sacrifice, mythology, and political commentary into Red Sonja #9. Kulan Gath's machinations propel the She-Devil in one direction and then another. Retracing her steps, she has trouble attacking the cause of the chaos. But can the She-Devil kill someone capable of enticing the gods to slay each other?

Art

While demons descend the cliffs beneath a ruined castle, the horned god Erlik rises to walk among brown-robed monks harvesting wheat. The souls of the dead surge around Red Sonja and Grace, charging on their steeds, as Ymir astride his wolf closes on them. The villagers defend their village, clutching shovels and pitchforks. Yet the horde of the dead swept in, toppling them like the wheat in the field.

Walter Geovani transports us from the underworld to Ludlow and the walled mountain city of Emberfall in Red Sonja #9. He returns us to the forest where the Tsjoko still haunts the blotring. Surrounded by flaming torches and burning candles, holograms sweep across a parchment map as Kulan Gath follows the gods’ rampages in Nordal Fortress.

Omi Remalante Jr. applies his loaded palette to Walter Geovani’s action-packed panels. Characters shine at night, their presence bold thanks to the light and shadow that emphasize their features, musculature, and clothing. Backgrounds enhance the historic feel of this bygone era thanks to rich texturing. Lighting and silhouettes amplify the stakes for Humanity while toning down the carnage in Red Sonja #9.

Jeff Eckleberry shares Torunn Gronbekk’s narration on beige parchment and dialogue in white balloons. Stressed words grow bold, and raised voices swell the large-size uppercase words. Energetic sound effects help us hear the Tsjoko chomp their teeth and shriek while swords cleave bodies and heads in the ferocious fighting.

Recently, Dorian Runebinder sensed a shift in the cosmos. The frightened sorcerer left Nordal Fortress to consult his friend and mentor. Frostwind confirmed Dorian's fears: Kulan Gath had returned from the dead. How will the evil sorcerer menace the lives of Dorian and Sonja? Let's don our armor, ride into Red Sonja #8, and find out!

Story

Red Sonja helped Grace free her little sister from the altar within the stone circle. The Tsjoko attacked, slaying the priest who would have killed the girl. The creatures also slew Alarn, a fellow villager who believed the child’s sacrifice would protect Ludlow from the continuing otherworldly attacks. The forest creatures pursued the three survivors. But when Red Sonja, Grace, and her sister left the Blotring, the Tsjoko vanished.

In Red Sonja #8, Sonja escorts the sisters to their aunt’s cottage. They rein in their horses when a singing woman stands in their path. While Grace lowers her guard, Sonja senses the woman is not all she appears. The She-Devil's defiance angers the woman. Her cloak of beauty falls, and the crone commands spectral beings to attack.

Torunn Gronbekk populates her story with mythological creatures that haunt sacred places and protect nature from the ravages of humanity. Yet ancient beings like Tsjoko and Hulder seem like minor menaces compared with the return of Kulan Gath. Red Sonja’s pity for Thord Varg’s followers tore the veil between the Hyborian world and the astral plane. The evil sorcerer slipped through the barrier and returned to life. But if one astral being can visit Earth, why not more?

Yet the gods favor the She-Devil in Red Sonja #8. The god trapped by Lady Alaberta’s black diamond carried Sonja to the Brythunian convent. Fate, or perhaps the goddess Scathach, directed Red Sonja to Ludlow at just the right time to meet Grace and thence to rescue her sister. When they arrive at the home of the sisters' aunt, Red Sonja learns the woman is one of three sorcerers who guard this land, along with Dorian Runebender and his mentor Frostwind. Yet how can Dorian and Red Sonja protect the inhabitants of Brythunia when its magical protectors fear the return of a death-defying sorcerer and an invasion of the gods?

Art

Dorian Runebinder regards the gathering storm from the parapet of Nordal Fortress. His wide eyes and gaping mouth reveal his fright as he packs a sack in his candlelit chamber. He lugs the bag through the rain to Frostwind’s cottage. Frostwind sits in his rocking chair and gazes at the burning logs in his fireplace. The aging sorcerer tells his former student of Kulan Gath’s evil ways.

Grace looks worried as she rides beside Sonja. The woman clutches her sister, who sits before her. The girl holds a lamb named Goose. When Red Sonja hears the Hulder’s song, she draws her sword and bares her teeth. The forest creature changes from a voluptuous blonde to a hag with sharp teeth and pupil-less eyes. Silhouettes emerge from the fog. Red Sonja leaps off her fleeing horse to attack the flying cloaked skeletons with claws and glowing eyes. Say, we're not in the woods near Hogwarts, are we?

In Red Sonja #8, Omi Remalante Jr. enhances Walter Geovani’s storybook art with vibrant color. Sonja's scarlet cape and hair evoke another fairy tale heroine. Rich skin tones help people and faces stand out as a multicolored fog fills the forest. Yet the skin of Grace's aunt suggests faintness or poor health, and the Hulder’s transformation reveals green skin. The rich coloring often seems in flux, suggesting the sunlight struggles to reach the forest floor. Even when the wraith and Red Sonja appear as silhouettes, streaks of blue and white represent the chilling mist and the speed of the chase.

Jeff Eckleberry shares Torunn Gronbekk’s narration on beige parchment and dialogue in white balloons. Stressed words grow bold, and raised voices swell the large-size uppercase words. Enormous black letters threaten to burst their balloons when Dorian Runebinder confronts his nemesis, while the clicking that lopes through one panel hints that even forest spirits feel fear.

Final Thoughts

While Kulan Gath steals another sorcerer's memories, Red Sonja finds a partner and a god whose children once menaced another Hyborian hero makes the world his killing field in Red Sonja #8.

Red Sonja opened an interdimensional portal and freed the god trapped in Lady Alaberta’s black diamond. Kulan Gath used the portal to defy death and return to the mortal plane. Now, Gath marches through the border kingdoms, leading a band of ravagers. More trouble afflicts nearby Brythunia. What terrors did Red Sonja unleash on the Hyborian World? Let’s leap into Red Sonja #7 and find out!

Story

Kulan Gath defied the gods and returned to Earth. Now, he feels aches and pains, and his aging muscles tire from exertion. Gath had planned to take over Thord Varg’s army, but the She-Devil defied him and freed the soldiers from their oath. So Gath gathers a band of sword and axe-wielding traitors. They storm a castle and celebrate their victory in a tavern.

The god brought Red Sonja to a convent in Brythunia. While the She-Devil healed from her ordeal, more injured people arrived. They filled the beds of the infirmary where the sisters attended their wounds. The Sister Superior summons Red Sonja to her office in Red Sonja #7. She explains that the injured began arriving shortly after Red Sonja. The victims describe strange, otherworldly attackers. Sister Superior wonders if Red Sonja opened the Gates Of Hell. She disapproves of the She-Devil’s violent life but hopes Red Sonja can close the gates and end the Witching Hour.

A sister gives Red Sonja herbs to ward off evil spirits. Red Sonja accepts the nun's kindness but knows it will take more to banish the demons. She mounts her horse, and rides to the nearby village of Ludlow. Red Sonja finds the streets abandoned. Frightened villagers peer out the windows of their homes. A scream fills the air. Red Sonja spurs her horse into a gallop.

In Red Sonja #7, Torunn Gronbekk shows how the She-Devil empathizes with others. Although she wields great power, Red Sonja risks her life to protect the weak and helpless. This time, she'll face more than Kulan Gath's band of sword and axe-wielding traitors. Gods walk the Earth. Legendary creatures called Tsjoko seek out human prey. Fear of these ancient Earth Spirits drives the Brythunians to abandon civilized gods like Mitra or the goddess mentioned by Sister Superior. Instead, locals appeal to ancient gods and follow a less humane worship.

Still, Kulan Gath remains a threat. Through his knowledge of human nature and the force of his personality, the sorcerer mobilizes an army capable of storming a castle. Only after securing victory does Gath summon magic. He's on a mission. Gath searches for something or perhaps someone. Whatever he seeks, rest assured it won’t bring peace to the Hyborian world.

Art

Kulan Gath digs a cane into the snow as he climbs a hill in Red Sonja #7. He grits his teeth, and his exhalation is visible amid the storm. While a castle rises in the distance, a barren tree frames our view as he turns and urges his followers to keep up. Their features look soft compared with Gath’s crows-feet, wrinkles, and prominent cheekbones. Yet they raise their weapons above their heads as they shout and charge the wooden castle doors.

Garbed in black & white cloth from head to toe, a sister covers her mouth when she sees Red Sonja has pulled up her dress and tied it beneath her breasts. The sister fumbles to loosen the knot. Leaving her axe and wood pile behind, Red Sonja smiles as she dashes off. Sister Superior wears a frown as she talks with the She-Devil. Her frown deepens as she grasps Red Sonja’s weapon and lifts it with two hands.

In Red Sonja #7, Omi Remalante Jr. enhances Walter Geovani’s storybook art with vibrant color. The traitorous rabble rejoice in the gray stone tavern illuminated by flaming torches. Yet Kulan Gath’s electric green magic makes the interior seem dim. The blood of injured locals matches Red Sonja's hair and cape, although the latter two show more highlighting and shading. Her armor and weapons shimmer like silver and gold, contrasting with her lightly tanned skin. While brown, gray, and beige dominate the town of Ludlow, verdant green fills panels as Red Sonja rides into the surrounding forest.

Jeff Eckleberry shares Torunn Gronbekk’s narration on beige parchment and dialogue in white balloons. Wavy rows fill yellow balloons as the drunken traitors celebrate their victory. Stressed words grow bold, and raised voices swell the large-size uppercase words. While enormous black letters threaten to burst their balloons, the green clicking that fills panels hints at the danger threatening Red Sonja, if not all humankind.

Thanks to Dynamite Comics for providing a copy for review.

Red Sonja #6 Review

By possessing a soldier, Kulan Gath helped Red Sonja infiltrate Vestfold. But when they reached the royal vault, the wizard turned on her. Now, the She-Devil lays dying. Can Lady Alaberta's black diamond save her? Let’s leap into Red Sonja #6 and find out!

Story

Thord Varg leads his army to Vestfold. The high priest made costly sacrifices for his kingdom. Now, as he beholds his beloved city, all he craves is power. His soldiers have brought him victory after victory. Yet he distrusts them. When the warrior-priest sees fire blossom atop his castle, he wonders if he is too late.

The god trapped within the black diamond hovers above Red Sonja as her blood spills onto the floor tiles. He asks her what she desires. She begs nothing for herself. Throughout this war, Red Sonja sought to protect others. She rescued those enslaved. Now, Red Sonja wishes to save the soldiers trapped by their oath. She feels a kinship with them. Long ago, Red Sonja swore an oath to become a death-dealing soldier. But can the god trapped in the stone release souls who willingly swore to serve Thord Varg and savored the power he gave them?

In Red Sonja #6, Torunn Gronbekk reflects on what brings us temporary versus lasting satisfaction. Like Vestfold's first king, Thord Varg sought to serve his city. Perhaps sorcerer Kulan Gath felt likewise in his youth. Yet, despite all his knowledge, he also succumbed to the allure of power. Now, crouching over Sonja, he believes the world cannot survive without his leadership.

Art

Thord Varg once took pride in his priestly robes. In Red Sonja #6, the armored general wears a grim expression as he leads his army home. He resembles the giant statue of Vestfold’s first king guarding his beloved city. Black drips like tears from the trio who ride alongside. Intriguingly, two of them are maidens. Unlike her warrior sisters, Sonja wears a vacant expression. The possessed soldier cradles her head with his hand. Yet rage overcomes his face as the castle guards burst in. Kulan Gath remembers what it was like to kill. Indeed, killing seems to empower him.

Ascending to another plane, Red Sonja walks through the sky among the blue spirits of those who swore service to Thord Varg. Retaining the colors of life, her scarlet hair and cape, her tanned skin, leather gloves and belt, and the hilts of her sword and dagger make a startling contrast. Yet when the fire of Vestfold embraces her, it sweeps her into a storm of yellow, orange, and red, banishing the cold, wispy spirits.

History says the last dragon lit Vestfold’s perpetual fire. Yet Walter Geovani portrays the god trapped in stone differently. An image of Greek perfection, Omi Remalante Jr. conveys the god's vibrant nature with the purple fabric that encircles him like a snake. Artist and Remalante Jr. work hand in hand to deliver a stunning finale to Red Sonja’s battles with Thord Varg in Red Sonja #6.

Torunn Gronbekk’s narration guides us through these epic events. Her words appear in scraps of beige parchment. The living speak using white dialogue balloons, while the possessed man utilizes black balloons encircled in red. All appear large and easy to read. Simon Bowland conjures few sound effects and reveals the intensity of emotions through giant, colored letters. Yet a red font—no matter how large—cannot protect Thord Varg from the fate he willingly embraced.

Thanks to Dynamite Comics for providing a copy for review.

Final Thoughts

While power blinds people to the needs of others, mercy releases people from bonds. Yet mercy proves a double-edged sword in Red Sonja #6, as it releases the innocent and the guilty.

Kulan Gath remembers his mortal life. As he gazes down from the astral plane, he watches Red Sonja ride through a snowstorm. What does the dead wizard plan for this warrior maiden who carries the late Lady Alaberta's black diamond? Let’s leap into Red Sonja #5 and find out!

Story

Kulan Gath shares his disdain for civilization with Conan and Red Sonja’s creator. Yet Robert E. Howard never sanctioned poisoning someone, let alone a trusted friend and mentor. Kulan Gath once pursued his quest for power without regard for loyalty or mercy. Now, as his spirit watches people fight and die on the mortal plane, he remembers what it felt like to be alive and kill those around him.

In Red Sonja #5, Thord Varg conquered Velanger to capture her black diamond. By bringing it to the High Priest's city of Vestfold, perhaps Red Sonja can stop his reign of terror. Yet she halts her flight to free refugees. Like an uncaring disease, slavers capture the frightened and homeless. But in Red Sonja, they find more than they bargained for.

Torunn Gronbekk meditates on loyalty versus reason, power versus compassion, and achievement versus satisfaction in Red Sonja #5. As priests use sex, violence, and human sacrifice to worship their gods, Torunn reveals a clue to Thord Varg’s power. The High Priest believes he slaughtered innocents to safeguard Vestfold's future. Yet is he wiser than the She-Devil, who doesn't overthink things and grasps whatever opportunities she finds? Unlike Thord Varg, she knows power comes with a price. She paid it to avenge her family's deaths. Now, she uses any power she possesses to help others.

Oh, and Red Sonja likes her horse. She talks to it as she would a person. That says a lot about her, too.

Art

Kulan Gath walks through a garden surrounded by planets and stars. Via a reflecting pool, he watches Red Sonja ride through a snowstorm. As she passes burning homes and buildings, she spies a caravan. Red Sonja rides toward the refugees shackled to a horse-drawn wagon. Pairs of red eyes glow in the darkness beneath the wagon’s fabric-strewn wooden hoops.

Walter Geovani imbues Sonja’s horse Erder with personality. Walter’s storybook art packs panels with more power than many double-page spreads. Little touches enhance his visual feast. Consider the similarity between the coils of Sonja's hair and the many-headed hydra. Observe how he mirrors a severed hydra neck with a slaver’s bloody stump. A circular staircase evokes the coils of a serpent, reminding us of the power that tempts priests and wizards in Red Sonja #5.

Omi Remalante Jr. imbues Kulan Gath’s remembrance with a faded quality, illuminated by torchlight. He surrounds the dead wizard with lustrous colors, comparing the ethereal beauty of his new life with the gray, burning lands Sonja rides through. Yet richness creeps into Hyborean lands as the morning light invades the storm. While bold and vibrant colors fill panels, Omi backlights scenes to suggest Red Sonja's indomitable nature. Amid all the bloodletting, blood dances in darkness, reminding readers of the source of Thord Varg’s power.

Simon Bowland writes Torunn Gronbekk’s compelling narrative using uppercase black letters on parchment. Simon grants white dialogue balloons to human characters, while those inhabited by a possessing spirit speak with white letters in black balloons. No sound effects invade the pages of Red Sonja #5. Yet Simon ends Torunn’s tale on a chilling note, as bloodthirsty believers demand the death of any who impedes their cause.

Thanks to Dynamite Comics for providing a copy for review.

Final Thoughts

While Red Sonja rescues the powerless and bestows mercy on monsters, a fallen foe influences events from beyond the grave, raining destruction upon the Hyborian world in Red Sonja #5.

Survivors from the slaughter of Nydalen pour into Velanger. But Vestfold’s army marches on the welcoming city. Can its thick stone walls hold off the invaders? Let’s leap into Red Sonja #4 and find out!

Story

After the king of Vestfold died without an heir, Thord Varg sought a means to feed his people. The High Priest sacrificed a child to the city’s eternal flame. Then he turned to the royal vault for answers. Using blood magic, Thord Varg raised an army and conquered nearby lands. Yet he seeks one thing to secure his power: a black diamond.

Lady Alaberta gave Red Sonja the sacred stone. The She-Devil burns to kill Thord Varg and halt the slaughter he’s unleashed. Should she call upon its power? Lady Alaberta channeled its power to save her child at the cost of her own life. What toll might the Black Diamond demand from Red Sonja to save thousands?

As Red Sonja fights to protect the town, the dark voice returns. It urges her to take the Black Diamond to Vestfold. The She-Devil knows Velanger’s defenders cannot turn back Thord Varg’s overwhelming horde. But can she abandon her friends? Seers Thalia and Thelo have counseled her. Vil and Ve, the identical twins from Tredalen, hunger to avenge their parents. Urmas, the noble captain of the guard, bows to the priests’ orders to fight to the last man. She knows Varg will kill them all or transform them into his mindless servants.

In Red Sonja #4, Torunn Gronbekk weaves a compelling tale of intrigue, suffering, and the search for redemption. Many will die. Some will fall prey to Thord Varg’s dominance. And the dark spirit that has watched over Red Sonja for so long will finally recall its identity.

Art

Walter Geovani constructs High Fantasy castle towns with thick stone walls, historic buildings, and imposing towers. Peasants and refugees huddle in cobblestone streets, their clothing little better than the robes worn by priests. Merchants array themselves in finery. Yet they look less regal than the soldiers, clad in uniforms and armor. No one outshines Red Sonja, resplendent in her chain mail bikini, red cloak, and leather boots.

Omi Remalante Jr.’s soft skin tones enhance Geovani’s storybook realism, fleshing out characters and clarifying class distinctions. As day's end nears, brilliant colors infuse the sky. Yet even in the dead of night, the moon shines upon the surrounding mountains, and torchlit interiors spill light upon Velanger’s streets. Red Sonja #4 seems pulled from a medieval manuscript or adapted from a Hollywood classic. Amid the siege, highlights and shading enhance the fighting, and gray never shields the characters' expressions.

Simon Bowland weaves character interaction with Gronbekk’s lyrical narrative. Uppercase words invade white balloons and colored boxes in Red Sonja #4. Even as Varg’s catapults hurl corpses over the walls and the dead fill the Velanger’s streets, the dialogue and story remain pleasing to the eye and easy to read.

Final Thoughts

As cities fall and the body count rises, the She-Devil With A Sword must shield a powerful stone from the two sorcerers who want it or unlock its power to halt the horde from sweeping across the Hyborian world in Red Sonja #4.
