Artificial #1 Review

Writer, Artist, Colorist & Letterer: Maria Llovet

Cover Artists: Maria Lovet & Jesús Orellana

Publisher: Image Comics

Price: $3.99

Release Date: September 3, 2025

Clara advises her clients on clothing, shoes, and accessories to meet their needs and desires. She doesn't have time for anything extraneous, especially if it's complicated. So all day, Clara looks forward to a date with someone new. What will he be like? And will her romantic partner meet her needs? Let's dress to impress, leap into Artificial #1, and see!

Story

After assisting clients all day, Clara races to the park. She's been eyeing her phone all day. When her date arrives, Clara feels an instant connection. His banter may be a trifle staid, but his presence intoxicates her. By the time he takes her to an arboretum, Clara cannot contain her excitement. Surrounded by flowers, they kiss for the first time. She yearns for more, so they hurry to her apartment. But just as he starts to ravish her, he pulls back and apologizes. Her free trial of Date-X has ended.

In Artificial #1, Clara’s date is an android. Like the clothing she selects for her clients, Date-X can tailor a man to meet Clara's needs. Her dream man can remember her and develop a relationship with her. Or he can forget her, making each date a journey of discovery. There's no need for arduous commitments. When Clara cancels her subscription fee, the man she adores will depart her life without an argument.

Maria Llovet creates a future in which people can have the partner of their dreams. There's no need to worry about whether your partner squeezes the toothpaste from the middle or the end. Nor does Clara have to worry about her partner's emotional needs. Clara doesn’t need to set aside her work schedule to coordinate schedules. And she never has to meet his friends, family, or get along with his in-laws.

Like Sam Treadwell in Cherry 2000, Clara can have adoration on demand. While Clara debates about working through issues with her former boyfriend, one of Clara's friends is making a decision. Tailoring a lover to meet her needs and desires seems more fun. Caught up in the alluring possibilities, Clara doesn’t sweat the details in Artificial #1.

Art

As Clara hurries to get to work, she passes a digital sign advertising Date-X. She smiles at reminders about the date. Mateo's photo, accompanying his texts, makes her frown. Maria Llovet guides us through Clara's workday with a page of twelve rectangular panels. But as Clara meets her date by an arching bridge, his blonde hair flows around his face. More small panels provide snapshots of Clara's perfect date. Petals flutter on an unseen breeze inside the arboreum. Framed by pink roses, Clara and her date kiss. When his hand slips inside her blouse, Clara gasps, and her kisses become more ardent.

Clara may work in the fashion industry. Yet she surrounds herself in black, white, beige, and brown. Pink forms a theme in Artificial #1, filling Clara's cheeks when she's happy, and highlighting the romantic stories she enjoys. Her friend Dani stands out in her purple blazer as she taps on a light blue holographic display. Yet dominating Clara’s future is a pink heart. The Date-X icon evokes Badgey from Star Trek: Lower Decks, or Miss Minutes in Marvel's Loki TV series.

Maria Llovet fills white dialogue balloons with black, uppercase letters. Mateo’s texts appear as lowercase black letters. The pink and black letters on Clara's phone guide her deliberations. Phone notifications, laughter, and celebration fill the air with large colorful letters. Yet the tiny white letters bordering her date's irises grab the most attention. Thanks to Image Comics for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

In Artificial #1, Clara can have everything she's ever wanted. But she must decide who the perfect person for her is. Does she want someone who makes decisions based on how others program him? Or does Clara want someone willing to compromise and work through the difficulties in their relationship to meet her needs?

Collecting the web comic sensation for the first time in print!

Fans of Lenore and irreverent humor will love the exploits of an all-too-relatable dead guy.

Never Been Deader follows the wildly relatable Lifeless Carl as he reluctantly journeys through the afterlife. Most of Carl’s time is spent in the offices of Afterlife Industries, where he works in the Department of Intake for the recently deceased. He is joined by his dead colleagues, who are equally reluctant to be there but are always ready to complain about their jobs over some coffee.

Lifeless Carl shares many of the same complaints as the usual non-deceased white-collar worker, like getting granted a half day but having to do double the work in part of the time. Luckily, Carl has his colleagues to alleviate some of his workplace anxiety, including Myrtle, his best work friend and confidant, Newbie, his often-confused trainee, and at the end of the day, his sarcastic pet cat, Furball.

Batman: Dark Patterns #1 Review

Writer: Dan Watters

Artist: Hayden Sherman

Colorist: Tríona Farrell

Letterer: Frank Cvetkovic

Editors: Arianna Turturro & Rob Levin

Cover Artists: Hayden Sherman & Stevan Subic

Publisher: DC Comics

Price: $4.99

Release Date: December 11, 2024

Gotham is a dangerous place. It always has been. While Batman can protect people from others, he cannot rescue them from their destructive inclinations. So, he watches and listens for someone preying on the citizens of his beloved city. What evil will he discover when the bat-signal shines in the sky? Let’s leap into Batman: Dark Patterns #1 and see!

Story

When Batman rushes to Gordon’s aid, he finds the young police detective consulting with a gray-haired man. Dr Sereika is a forensic pathologist who has started advising the GCPD. He is fascinated by what a corpse's injuries say about the victim's life. Batman distrusts the newcomer. But lacking another police coroner, Dr Sereika will have to do. In Dan Watters' story, Batman studies the patterns of city life to understand the dangers that threaten Gotham's citizens. Mr Choi is the third victim in a recent string of brutal slayings. But aside from the manner of his death, Gordon sees nothing to connect him with the other two.

In Batman: Dark Patterns #1, Bruce Wayne is in the early days of his career. He has yet to take on a partner. When he faces danger, he must consider his options, rather than reacting in tune with his crime-fighting aids and inventions. He takes time to muse before deciding his next course of action. And he suffers wounds his more experienced self will avoid.

In that, Batman shares commonality with the victims. It also links him with Gotham's latest serial killer. The perpetrator is a meticulous practitioner in the art of pain. He delivers a maximum of suffering to his victims before releasing them to death. Unlike Batman, he feeds upon the pain. It seems to strengthen him.

Art

Hayden Sherman superimposes a bust with concealed controls over scenes of danger. Batman dons his suit and ascends to a rooftop to see flames devouring a building. He climbs into a Batmobile parked atop a high-rise. When the bat-signal hovers above the glowing towers, Batman races down a road bordered by trees that aspire to ascend higher than the distant buildings.

An inset panel of gray and brown dogs overtakes a billboard as Batman roars past. Hayden Sherman tilts the panel to show Batman racing upward. Despite his elegant design, the Batmobile’s straight lines signal the owner’s adherence to law and order. Tríona Farrell imbues the night with yellow, orange, and green as Batman ascends to investigate a crime. The yellow symbol on the hero’s dark chest evokes the signal Gordon shines into the sky in Batman: Dark Patterns #1.

Frank Cvetkovic shares Batman’s thoughts with lowercase black letters in pale blue paper scraps. Balloons with uppercase black letters grow spiky when Batman overhears a potential victim speak with his tormentors. Thinner spikes push through balloons composed of straight lines with lightning bolt arrows when Batman discovers the culprit for a recent series of crimes in Batman: Dark Patterns #1. Thanks to DC Comics for providing a review copy.

Now, to honor of Batman Day 2025, let's take a look inside:

Final Thoughts

This series, composed of three-issue story arcs, reveals the historic crimes that spur the corruption afflicting Gothamites today. Gotham becomes the primary character, simultaneously the hero, villain, and victim, as Batman investigates a serial torturer in Batman: Dark Patterns #1.

Rating 9.6/10

Butterfly TP Review

Story & Creator: Arash Amel

Writer: Marguerite Bennett

Artists: Antonio Fuso & Stefano Simeone

Colorist: Adam Guzowski

Letterer: Steve Wands

Publisher: Boom! Studios

Price: $17.99

Release Date: August 12, 2025

As Rebecca Faulkner peruses the skyline of Oslo, Norway, her thoughts drift back to a simpler time. When she belonged, and every day was a joy. Rebecca has changed so much that she wonders if she can even trust her memories. How much of what she remembers happened, and how much is a creation of her mind? And how might her next mission reconnect her with her past? Let's grab our Walther PPKs, leap into Butterfly TP, and see!

Story

After her father died, Rebecca's life fell apart. Her mother became devastated and embittered. Eventually, she found another life partner. But young Becky had no one to help her deal with her loss. So, she followed her father's career path. Eventually, she landed at The Project. The company trains operatives to discard their identities. She no longer goes by Becky or Rebecca. All Rebecca recognizes now is her codename of Butterfly.

In Butterfly TP, a retrieval mission goes horribly wrong. When the dust settles, the world believes Rebecca has killed a Russian oligarch. Suddenly, her employer no longer takes her calls. What little direction she receives leads her on a journey into her past and the father she barely remembers. While Arash Amel and Marguerite Bennett's story follows Rebecca, it also shows us events from her father's eyes. Much to Rebecca's surprise, David Faulkner didn’t die in Somalia. He has spent the past twenty years in hiding. Her father is married to a woman younger than her. Rebecca's half-brother likes dinosaurs.

As in her Witchblade stories for Top Cow, Marguerite Bennett discusses how institutions can strip us of our individuality. Her story of intrigue, pain, and loss reminds us what it does to our souls when others value us for our skills over who we are. Butterfly TP shows how governments and companies attract idealists before corrupting their grand plans to appease commercial and political concerns. Still, Rebecca and David have found each other. If they can survive everything the world throws at them, perhaps they can start over as father and daughter.

Art

Antonio Fuso introduces Rebecca with glimpses of her past. A river winds through an evergreen forest as her father helps Becky aim her rifle and shoot bottles off a wooden fence. Adam Guzowski links father and daughter with a maroon flannel shirt and a pink jacket. The lenses of David’s glasses are the same blue as Becky’s eyes.

Rebecca stands on a balcony in modern Oslo. Her blonde hair sways in the breeze as she frowns at the historic buildings surrounding her. Like the bottles on the fence post, a glass of red wine perches atop the hotel's wrought iron balcony railing. A beauty kit mingles with armaments in her room. A quick change transforms Rebecca into a woman with short brown hair. Wearing a sweater, scarf, and glasses with narrow, rectangular lenses, she pulls on a backpack. After leaving the hotel, Rebecca merges with the crowd before finding a baby carriage and adding that to her disguise.

Stefano Simeone relays the second half of Butterfly TP. Rebecca's world grows less angular after she reunites with her father. Camera angles shift as Adam Guzowski anchors us in her new reality. David Faulkner's hair has gone gray. He pulls on a checked maroon coat, while Rebecca wears a pink jacket. Once again, evergreens surround father and daughter as they seek safety from their pursuers. As backgrounds turned scarlet when young Becky shot a bird, white snow now drifts through a red sky as a streak of yellow impacts and travels through a soldier’s throat.

Steve Wands fills dialogue balloons and colored narrative boxes with black uppercase text. David Faulkner's thoughts and memories of why he faked his death appear as white letters in black boxes. Sound effects help us hear alarms, gunfire, and explosions, while crashes accompany shattered dreams. Thanks to Boom! Studios for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Butterfly TP follows two surveillance agents living in Europe. Both Americans have seen their dreams become nightmares. They are also related. As they reconnect, they must flee the people hunting them. The reissued trade paperback contains extensive commentary from the story's creators, the original Hollywood pitch, production photos, and interviews with the cast, producers, and showrunners of the new, reimagined Amazon Prime TV series.

The year is 1940. Most of the Western world is embroiled in a war against a fascist regime whose march across Europe shows no sign of defeat. With the specter of global war looming, it’s a time of fear and paranoia for those living in Gotham. It’s only been a few months since the city was rescued from undead monsters by the masked vigilante known as The Bat-Man, but a vicious killer has been on a murder spree that’s taking the city to its breaking point. Bodies are turning up in theatrically gruesome ways…all staged with the killer’s calling card: a hangman’s noose. While The Bat-Man endeavors to solve the spate of murders, a young reporter from the Daily Star named Lois Lane arrives in Gotham. Meant to cover a movie premiere, it doesn’t take long for Lane to find herself caught in the grips of a new villain in Gotham. One whose mastery of fear will plunge the city into chaos!
