When the weather turned cold amid the holidays, Kara Zor-El started to feel down. How could Kara enjoy time with her new family and friends when all the people she knew in Argo City are dead? Yet, life has its rhythms. And even though Kara has taken a few beatings, when trouble shook the miniaturized Kryptonian city of Kandor, she arrived to save the day.

After Lesla-Lar offered Kara a means of regaining what she lost in Kandor, Kara also discovered something that could give her more power than before. But when she interrupts Lobo during his first job following his self-imposed isolation on Azzplaque Major, Supergirl's fate seems to intertwine with the newly reinstated bounty hunter. Will they frag each other into extinction? Or will Supergirl, Lobo, Krypto, and Dawg team up for an extraordinary mission together? Let’s leap into Summer of Supergirl Special #1 and see!

Main Man’s Best Friend: Story

After sitting in a jail cell, Lobo, Kara, Krypto, and Dawg attend a hearing. As they face the judge, Lobo pleads innocence, while Kara Zor-El contends they are both guilty.

When fate separates them, Dawg returns to Midvale with Kara and Krypto in Summer of Supergirl Special #1. Lobo’s best friend even helps as Kara uses her powers to aid others. But Dawg misses his master. And unlike Lobo, he doesn’t understand the reasons for their separation.

As Sophie Campbell examines the bond between a pet and its owner, she also illustrates how Kara’s attitude influences the people around her. Lobo remains the petulant child who didn't want to conform to rules on Czarnia. Yet a little love can go a long way in encouraging good behavior, turning enemies into friends, and helping make the world a better place.

Main Man’s Best Friend: Art

As a judge sits beneath an enormous seal, Lobo raises his chain-wrapped forearm. Beside him, Kara smiles at Lobo’s antics. As Kara’s counsel hovers before the judge, his dispassionate discourse infuriates Lobo. Yet as Krypto, Dawg, and Leegra follow Kara’s lead, Lobo’s counsel slumps and supports his head on the table.

As Tríona Farrell adorns Belén Ortega’s cheery art with a bright palette, blue creeps into the green courtroom as Kara makes her case. Red tinges Lobo’s retelling of events, and the evening sky on Plinko Astra. Yet as Crush’s red attire seems linked with her father’s antics, stars twinkle in the violet air when she meets Leegra in Summer of Supergirl Special #1.

Becca Carey fills white dialogue balloons with black uppercase letters, while Kara’s thoughts fill white clouds. White offscreen dialogue appears in colored boxes. Sound effects accompany more property damage than the night of Clarissa Giltedge’s No Beer New Year party, while enlarged yellow letters help Kara appeal to Lobo’s deeply buried good side.

Lost Girls: Story

Taking an exercise break is a great way to relieve stress. But when Brad uses the company mascot to make a statement, Supergirl worries that it will hurt others. Yet instead of getting a good workout, Kara discovers she may have bitten off more than she can chew. When another hero arrives to help, Supergirl still wants to blow off steam. But by sharing her struggles with a like-minded person, Kara’s tension lessens, helping her reconcile with her painful past and look toward the future in Gail Simone’s story.

Lost Girls: Art

When a futuristic female robot tears through a concrete wall and a chicken-wire fence, guards brace to fire, while a fireman warns people of danger. As they gaze through a window, Brad’s coworkers look concerned and aghast, while his expression makes an unintended comparison with a supervillain. After Supergirl’s face reflects off the robot’s smooth metal face, Emma Kubert and Sandra Hope combine a tilted silhouette scene with a close-up of the robot’s attack.

When the gold robot induces fear, the guards respond with yellow-and-orange gunfire. While the red in her costume links Supergirl with the emergency responders, her gold belt suggests empathy for the robot’s plight. As Trish Mulvihill adorns this ten-page story in vibrant colors, Supergirl shares two colors of her costume with the hero who comes to her aid.

As Ariana Maher fills white balloons with black uppercase letters, the robot speaks in a machine font. Small black letters in a yellow banner locate the reader in time and space. Kara begins her tale by sharing her white thoughts in blue boxes. But her narration gradually disappears as Kara interacts with the similarly minded hero.

Who Is Supergirl: Story

Having regained a physical form, Red Tornado’s consciousness no longer inhabits the Justice League Watchtower’s computer systems. So, when he needs to recheck the data in the personnel files, Red Tornado asks Conner Kent to review the Super-Family archives. In Mark Waid’s story, Jon Kent finds Steel helping Conner with his assignment. Yet while both belong to the Super-Family, they are puzzled by contrasting entries. Jon may enjoy teasing Conner about living in the past. Yet as he recognizes Conner and Steel's concerns, Jon realizes he can help them understand Kara's place in the Super-Family.

Who is Supergirl: Art

As Jon enters the immense room, Kara's numerous costume changes fill a wall monitor in Summer of Supergirl Special #1. A white-and-indigo hologram showcases her origins, while a color photo displays Kara's arrival on Earth. Alex Guimarāes adorns Kara’s early choices with yellow, orange, and brown. But as Kara takes on more color, Cian Tormey’s blue line drawing of all the people who helped Kara appears behind her.

Steve Wands introduces characters and the location with black uppercase letters in yellow boxes. Black uppercase dialogue fills white balloons as they debate Kara’s position in the Super-Family. Offscreen dialogue in white and colored boxes helps the trio realize the breadth and depth of Kara’s contributions to the people around her. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

Kara Zor-El may always feel like an outsider. Yet her vibrant spirit and positivity help her make friends wherever she goes. Lesla-Lar’s memory lingers as Kara protects Midvale while advocating criminal reform. And as friends bond over similar interests, histories, and food, Superman's son helps encapsulate Kara's rich history in Summer of Supergirl Special #1.

With Wolverine's help, Rogue and Gambit mentored a group of young mutants nicknamed the Outliers. When the St Juniors invited them to share Haven House, the X-Men also trained their daughter, Dome. The house guarded a graveyard for centuries, a rare resting place for Mutants in a world that hated them. The St Juniors and X-Men also helped Lady Henrietta Benjamin and Man-Thing guard the Dark Artery, an entryway to the Penumbra. There, Shuvahrak torments people who hurt or betray the Mutant members of their families during their lives.

When Galactus approached their property, Rogue stopped the Planet Eater at the cost of her life. Years later, Henrietta Benjamin visits the St Juniors’ home. She tells Gambit, Ransom, Temper, Dome, and Spider-Girl that Shuvahrak no longer wishes to torment the dead. Now, she wants to attack the living. Can Gambit and his adopted family prevent the dark god from arising? And how will Shuvahrak treat the inhabitants of Revelation's Territories? Let's grab a pack of playing cards, leap into Unbreakable X-Men #2, and see!

Story

After Rogue's death, the St Juniors' home became a house of pain. Gambit thinks of Rogue constantly. He yearns to join her in death. When Shuvahrak raises a zombie army to wipe out the guardians, Gambit pours out his anger and despair over Rogue's loss on his undead attackers. Despite how Ransom and the others care for him, Gambit draws strength by thinking of Nightcrawler, who has prayed for and counseled him.

In Unbreakable X-Men #2, Lady Henrietta and the others don’t know how Shuvahrak has gained new powers. But the prospect of the god breaking free to torment the living is a danger they cannot ignore. It frightens Ransom enough to suggest a reunion of the Outliers, something he has resisted all these years. Foremost in his thoughts is Deathdream, who convinced the others to promise that they would fight Shuvahrak if she ever threatened the living.

With Miss Henrietta urging them to hurry, Gail Simone’s story sends Gambit and his small cadre of X-Men to gather reinforcements. Years ago, Galactus told Rogue that Dome served no purpose at Haven House, but she could fulfill her promise elsewhere. Given her fierce love of Dome, Rogue didn't let the girl consider becoming the Planet Eater’s herald. Years after one giant's attack brought their lives to a standstill, the threat of another helps Gambit and the others remember their purpose and use their gifts to protect others in Unbreakable X-Men #2.

Art

As Gambit battles near a statue he cannot see, he guards a memorial erected by the city of New Orleans. Afterward, clad in the clothes of his late wife, Lady Henrietta hugs and kisses Gambit outside Haven House. While the X-Men gather in the living room, Shuvahrak arises. Chains adorn a leviathan more beast than Human in appearance. As the rays of light surrounding her echo the shape of Rogue's memorial, worshippers surround her, while a town climbs a nearby hill.

While Espen Grundetjern adorns Unbreakable X-Men #2 with brief respites from the encroaching darkness, Ransom strides through photographic negatives. Like Shuvahrak's tail, Sadurang’s glowing orange, red, and blue body appears more serpentine than before.

Spider-Girl’s red jacket links her with Calico’s red riding coat, while the copper manes of her gray horses glow. Lady Henrietta and Dome prepare to protect Haven House, clad in black and gray. The X on Dome’s shirt echoes the entryway to the realm that can no longer hold its angry god.

Clayton Cowles shares dialogue using uppercase black letters in white balloons and boxes or white letters in black balloons. Gambit’s thoughts appear as white letters in pink boxes as he fights off zombies with glowing pink cards. The letters grow bold for intonation and never shrink. While earthshaking sound effects herald the end of an era, enlarged and colored words make for a statement of purpose and unity. Thanks to Marvel Comics for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Gambit's love of Rogue helped him build a loving, supportive community for Mutants in Haven House. After his despair made the home a tomb, the Outliers went their separate ways. While survivor's guilt made Gambit want to die, Shuvahrak’s loss drove her to make others feel her pain. Dwelling on her loss fed her anger until that was all she knew. Feeling betrayed by the Mutant community for not protecting her child, Shuvahrak arises in a land created by Revelation’s betrayal of the Mutant community’s ideals in Unbreakable X-Men #2.

Rebel Moon: Nemesis #2 Review

Story: Zach Snyder

Writer: Gail Simone

Artist: Federico Bertoni

Colorist: Fares Maese

Letterer: Andworld Design

Cover Artists: Cathy Kwan, Federico Bertoni, Dev Pramanik & Claudia Ianniciello

Publisher: Titan Comics

Price: $4.99

Release Date: August 20, 2025

When her father left Tatan at Gwanggeato's monastery, he gave his daughter a journal. But the priests stripped away her individuality, leaving the girl nothing to write about. Now, Tatan opens her leather-bound volume. The names she writes inside define her pain. Tatan has visited the refuse planet Aradas, the pleasure planet Kalois, and the mausoleum planet Triausel. Not even her last stop at the garden planet of Eden could bring her joy. Where will she seek justice next? Let’s grab our swords, leap into Rebel Moon: Nemesis #2, and see!

Story

Tatan returned from the monastery with a husband. She resumed life with her father and mother and started a family. Among the skills the monks taught her, Tatan had a gift for wood carving. This came in handy when the Imperium requisitioned all the fish from their world, and her father defied them by poisoning the water.

While she hunts down the people who destroyed her life, Tatan remembers the one she chose. She left the monastery with one of her fellow pupils to have a family. After being sent away by her father and indoctrinated by the priests, Tatan embraced her new life fully. At least she did, until her father defied the Imperium, forcing her to become the sole provider.

In Rebel Moon: Nemesis #2, Zach Snyder and Gail Simone draw a parallel between her father’s decision to poison the lake and the Imperium’s rapacious actions. Yet the storytellers also compare Tatan with Ana Desdemona, the woman who carried out the Imperium’s wishes. Like Tatan, Ana was forced into a mold not of her choosing. Yet while Tatan rejected others’ dictates, Ana embraces them. And while Tatan’s father regrets his actions, Ana delights in hers.

Art

A woman trudges through the driving rain on an outpost moon of Falun. Her sandaled feet disappear beneath flowing streams. The tattered edges of her cape suggest birds’ wings as heavily armored soldiers steer her through the storm. Inside a Nissen hut, a doctor in a blood-splattered cape lights his pipe, attended by an armed guard. The instruments arrayed on his tray are likewise coated red.

As Federico Bertoni shows a purple dreadnaught speeding past colorful planets and suns, Fares Maese shows the red and pink energy propelling it. Yet the interior of the Marauder and the soldiers’ attire is as gray as the people and buildings on Falun’s moon. The colors clash with the verdant land surrounding a lake bordered by reeds and coated in floating lily pads. Then orange obliterates all the green in Rebel Moon: Nemesis #2.

Andworld Design fills white dialogue balloons with uppercase black letters and brown boxes with white uppercase narration. Larger white letters on transparent banners locate us in time and space. Looming white numbers follow Nemesis' countdown to Ana. Sound effects accompany rifle fire and explosions. Hand-printed white letters hover over logographic symbols on tan paper aging with brown and red. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Rebel Moon: Nemesis #2 compares two women who had to make hard choices to survive. They’re more alike than they would care to admit. Yet one delights in becoming a monster, while the other wishes things could have been different.

Rating 9.8/10
