Story
As she hesitates on the brink, others leave her to her business as they pass by. Then, Officer Marian Guy stops. He doesn’t know Myra. Yet he recognizes her from the job. Myra knows what he is doing as he speaks with her. Still, she lets him talk her down. His intervention is enough to get her to return to her apartment. Besides, that's where she keeps the booze and the pills that help her cope with life.
In Little Nightmares: Descent to Nowhere Vol 1, Officer Guy prompts her to do the one thing that matters to her. Although he’s not a Detective, he wants to investigate the Milk Carton Cases with her. Myra knows that she’ll have to tread softly to avoid the bureaucracy that wants to sweep these difficult cases under the rug. Still, she doesn’t anticipate that Police Chief Homer Downes will suspend her for trying to investigate the cold cases.
As Lonnie Nadler follows Myra Wan and Marian Guy’s off-the-books investigation, images of two children trapped in a nightmare plague Myra. Perhaps they are products of the alcohol and drugs she has become addicted to. Or like the sleeping sickness that overtakes adults, perhaps the nightmares are endemic to the ennui of the Counties.
These nightmares change as she investigates the reasons behind the Missing Persons cases. As what she experiences and learns alters the nightmares, Myra wonders if her addiction makes her crazy or keeps her sane. Yet, despite the difficulties she encounters and the uncomfortable truths she learns, once she embarks on the most important thing she’s ever done, Myra refuses to stop in Little Nightmares: Descent to Nowhere Vol 1.

Wooden boxes hang on chains over a circular chasm with a staircase carved into its sides. A girl kneels by broken pipes with her arm in a cast and tape covering her mouth. When she stares into the beam of light spilling through a hole in the wall, she sees another child wearing a bag over his head. Through holes in the bag, the boy kneels before the bars of his cell. An eye watches the children in captivity. Yet the eye is on the back of Detective Myra Wan’s neck in Little Nightmares: Descent to Nowhere Vol 1.
As Dennis Menheere alternates dream imagery with Myra Wan’s waking nightmare, Jovanna Plata, Dearbhla Kelly, and Menheere paint the counties with green, yellow, brown, and red. Myra pours yellow alcohol into a glass. But when she gazes into her drink, she sees the yellow of the girl's hair mixed with the red of the girl's shirt. While blue dominates visions of the two children navigating a labyrinth pursued by monsters, Myra enters her boss's domain. Amid the brown and red office, the glowing green dials of two wooden clocks link with the pills Myra takes to retain her sanity. Yet white figures appear in her waking hours, as she visualizes the girl from her nightmares inhabiting her reality.
Lowercase letters fill the background, as Myra’s thoughts invade panels. Black lowercase letters fill beige balloons as Myra and Marian Guy peer into mysteries their boss would prefer unsolved. The letters appear as if written by a shaky hand. They grow bold for intonation and shrink or fade for lowered voices. Dave Lentz fills Myra’s nightmares with scratching, creaking, impacts, and hissing as a giant form speaks white sounds into black dialogue balloons. Final Thoughts
A sickness afflicts the Counties. People go to sleep and don't wake up. Yet another illness plagues the gloomy Counties. But Detective Myra won't stop until she discovers why a perpetual dread threatens her society's future in Little Nightmares: Descent to Nowhere Vol 1.
