Selina Kyle may not have life all figured out. Still, she knows how to have fun. Sadly, her return to Gotham hasn't been smooth sailing. Selina's landlord evicted her from her apartment. Her friend Holly needs her help. Then there's Carmine Falcone, who's still unsure what to do about the Venice affair.

While Selina and the mob boss dance around the Italian job, her first mission for him puts GCPD Commissioner Vandal Savage at odds with the Feds. But if Carmine Falcone doesn't know what to do with Selina, others know exactly how they'd like to treat her. And they're determined to make her homecoming worse before it gets better. How will Black Mask attack Selina next? And will former Catwoman, Holly Robinson, end up in his crosshairs? Let’s leap into Catwoman #86 and see!

Story

She found him at his lowest ebb. With his empire crumbling around him, not even torture could restore Black Mask's spirit. But Katarina Belov's resilience inspired him. Selina Kyle had destroyed her world, too. Yet Katarina had arisen with the money Black Mask needed to get back on his feet. All she asked was that he torment Selina Kyle. So, Black Mask begins at the end. Or at least the end of George’s life. With her homeless friend lying dead in the apartment, Selina Kyle hears his voice from a satellite phone. Instead of the eviction notice, she finds a note taped to her door. And she hears the Gotham Police climbing the stairs.

After beginning two weeks ago, when Selina returned to Gotham, Catwoman #86 launches Selina Kyle on a hunt. Just as Selina changes identities to tell passersby a story, Black Mask constructs a narrative for her. But while Selina pursues Black Mask's clues, his story recalls Katarina Belov’s hunt for Selina. Once more, the police want Selina after attending a charity gala. Again, the GCPD seek her in the apartment that anchors Selina’s cherished life in Gotham. Yet this time, Selina's safehouse doesn't offer her the same freedom she once found in an alias.

In Torunn Grønbekk’s story, Gotham once again becomes too hot for Selina Kyle. Instead of traveling around the world and pursuing clues to Evie Hall's death, Selina Kyle follows Black Mask's breadcrumbs through Gotham. And instead of Katarina Belov burning down Selina's life as Evie Hall, Black Mask seeks to destroy Selina Kyle's life as thoroughly as she helped bring down Katarina's empire in Catwoman #86.

Art

While he gives her a wooden chair, Black Mask cannot sit still before her golden mask. So, he rises as she speaks with him. As she removes her mask, Katarina remembers wandering through the flames Selina unleashed in her mansion. Recalling a nurse who showed her kindness, Katarina Belov touches his mask. When she cradles his chin in her bandaged fingers, Black Mask rises to cover her ravaged features.

As Davide Gianfelice propels Selina Kyle on a race against time, Patricio Delpeche adorns Catwoman #86 with a roving palette of limited colors. Black, gray, and tan surround Black Mask as he speaks with Katarina. Her light-blue and red clothes link with memories of her reduced state before Black Mask uplifts her. A red chair links with her red eye, and red marks of deception amid a green-tinged battle that recalls Selina's invasion of Vandal Savage's domain. Yet like the Corvette parked outside the pub where she met Holly, another red vehicle warns of imminent danger.

Steve Wands locates readers in time and space with white lowercase letters. While the narrator employs black lowercase letters in yellow boxes, Katarina's off-camera dialogue fills yellow balloons. White starbursts showcase phone calls as Selena's thoughts inhabit lavender boxes. Black letters in dialogue balloons grow bold for intonation and enlarge for increased volume. Yet as small, faint letters force Selina Kyle to think like her tormentor, a siren erupts in the night. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

Carmine Falcone unleashed a wave of death around the world to demonstrate that he was untouchable. Yet Selina Kyle proved that he wasn’t. After working for him to rebuild her life in Gotham and help people like George and Holly, Black Mask uses Katarina Belov's money to send a wave of death crashing upon everyone Selina cares about. But while Black Mask reveres her as a swan in Catwoman #86, he has brought a lioness into his den. Alongside her late husband, Katarina built an empire upon drugs and secrets. And she’s written books on Carmine Falcone and Black Mask.

For fans of Reservoir Dogs-style dark comedy and chaotic criminal camaraderie, a Noir-turned-Manga.

Rio delivers stunning artwork, sharp wit, blood-soaked backstories, and a brutally offbeat take on redemption.

Unemployed Killers Support Group is a razor-sharp, darkly hilarious noir-esque manga from Taiwanese creator Rio. This is not your average self-help group.

Locker Loyed, once a deadly sniper, lost his vision — and his job — on a mission gone wrong. Now, he’s joined an unlikely circle of former contract killers, each grappling with their own personal collapse. Among them: Gloria Maze, a meticulous assassin whose career imploded after catching her husband cheating and killing the mistress in a jealous rage; Jerry Cole, a justice-obsessed lawyer turned bloodthirsty executioner; and Jordi Joe, a delusional con man who’s never actually killed anyone.

As they try to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives, Locker begins to realize his past isn’t done with him. A dangerous figure—the one responsible for his blindness and a friend’s death — is still at large. And revenge is still on the table.

For fans of dark comedy, crime thrillers, and twisted found family, Unemployed Killers Support Group is a bold, bloody, and brilliantly offbeat ride through the lives of society’s most dangerous burnouts. Welcome to the group—check your conscience at the door.

Quite sane in the Membrane!

Okay, so I mayyyy have left a little something out of that last description. I ain’t the only Quinn in town these days. Ya see, my rational, non-fun-loving brain parts have taken a body of their own, and she’s claiming my doctorate as her own. You can’t do that! I created Facebook! What do you mean she’s wired in?

This is a real Dr Jackass and Ms Hyde situation, except we both got so tired of each other that we moved out and got our own bodies!

Charlie provoked Kong into fighting a Kraken. Kong may have prevailed. But while Kaia’s tribe tended to the Titan’s injuries and treated the infection raging through him, Yuggoth rose to usurp Kong's dominion. When Kong returned to health, Charlie and the others forced Yuggoth to retreat. But when Charlie's dad, Cap, and Sam depart to discover what the mercenary Druid is up to, the monsters from Yuggoth’s domain start to reappear.

Annie isn’t a native of Skull Island. But she has lived long enough on the neighboring island to see how Yuggoth threatens to disturb the balance of life on the surface. When she heads to Kong's temple with a plan, Yuggoth’s creatures frustrate her efforts. Like Charlie, her plan may have succeeded. Still, someone pays the price for Annie's victory. What has Charlie’s dad learned about Druid’s plans? And will Yuggoth find another way to threaten Skull Island? Let's grab our weapons, leap into Escape From Skull Island #3, and see!

Story

They don’t have a body to bury. Still, they made a grave marker for Irene. But that’s not good enough for Annie. While she fought her mother tooth and nail, Annie refuses to let Irene’s death go unavenged. So, she leaves to find another way to prevent Yuggoth from returning to Skull Island.

Charlie arrived on Skull Island as a reluctant visitor. He didn’t care if he endangered Kong’s life. Nor did he realize how Kong protected the inhabitants from dangerous plants and even more aggressive monsters. When her king lay injured and helpless, Charlie told Kaia that he wasn’t sorry for his actions. But in Escape From Skull Island #3, Charlie assures Kaia that he stands by the island's protector. And despite missing out on college, Charlie realizes he's starting to feel as comfortable with their back-to-basics lifestyle as Annie did on the neighboring island.

The stakes are high in Simon Furman’s story. While Yuggoth still seeks to return to the surface, one of the people Irene hired plans to exploit both islands. Once his people complete the bridge between the islands, Druid hopes to lure rich thrillseekers to hunt the ferocious beasts. But Kaia’s tribe sought refuge on Annie’s island when Yuggoth and his monsters invaded Skull Island. Once Druid completes the bridge, Yuggoth’s monsters can easily attack Kaia’s tribe in Escape From Skull Island #3.

Cover B: Christopher Jones

Art

Annie knows these islands can be deadly. Still, seeing the wooden cross protruding from the rubble knocks her for six. Yet when Charlie reaches for her, she snarls. Despite Kaia's claim that Charlie and Annie have strange courtship rituals, Annie stalks away and climbs atop Dog. As the maned creature trots away, Mike embraces Charlie instead. As they stand on the patio of Kong's Temple, rubble nestles against the broken edges of the stone platform. In the interior courtyard, Kong pauses amid the plants and statues when a stream of light transfixes him.

As Christopher Jones crafts engaging characters and spectacular settings, Charlie Kirchoff applies rich colors to the drama and action in Escape From Skull Island #3. The vivid greens imbue the islands with a tropical feel, while the surrounding sea and sky fill panels with a range of blues. The gray stones, boulders, and rubble link the majestic temple of the island's protector with the mercenaries endangering his island. And as Charlie vows to stand with Kong, Mike's red shirt and Kaia's red cloak link them as his greatest supporters.

Andworld Design fills white dialogue balloons and colored narrative boxes with black uppercase letters. As yellow block letters locate us in time and space, Kong’s roars enlarge the letters and deform balloons. Sound effects accompany a surreptitious mission and a battle for survival as smoke and lightning emerge from the Hollow Earth. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.

Cover C: Fred Pham Chuong

Final Thoughts

There's a little bit of everything on Skull Island, but not always where you expect it. As Annie seeks a way to complete her mother's mission of destroying Yuggoth, and Cap and Sam try to escape Druid’s clutches, Charlie makes a surprising discovery in Escape From Skull Island #3.
