As Luke travels toward the family beach apartment, silence reigns in the car. The miles pass by as he reads his movie magazine. His father stares at the road, and his mother snoozes. They make the same drive every summer. This holiday should be no different than the others.

Yet as his summer holiday nears, Luke feels on the cusp of shrugging off his normal self and becoming someone new. How will Luke enjoy reconnecting with his longtime friend? And how will the holiday change his life? Let’s grab our beach gear, leap into Battle in the Flower Gardens, and see!

Story

As Luke sits in the back seat, the silence seems both comfortable and uncomfortable. He senses that his parents don’t talk because they have nothing to say. Luke’s thoughts drift to Mitchell and how they reunite every summer. Their fathers had once been best friends. Yet, they lost touch until they reconnected at the beach. The men occasionally call each other during the year. But like Luke and Mitchell, their fathers enjoy their summer vacations together.

Yet in Battle in the Flower Gardens, this summer proves different. Mitchell’s condo remains empty. Luke looked forward to seeing his friend. Yet, he’s also relieved that Mitchell has not arrived. Luke watches other boys his age hanging out and wishes he could join them. But Luke’s introspective nature makes it difficult for him to form friendships.

In Eduardo Medeiros’ story, Luke’s abilities unexpectedly grant him a chance to be different. He leaps at the opportunity to explore life from a different perspective. Yet, as in all aspects of life, the good comes with the bad. Luke discovers what it means to be popular and makes an unexpected friend. But just as an incident mars his perfect holiday, Luke’s experiences in Battle in the Flower Gardens will change his life forever.

Art

Instead of growing long and straight, Luke’s hair frizzes and curls at the neckline. He reads his comics and magazines with large rectangular glasses. Then, Luke stares out at the world through windows. His mother is slender and delicate, while a tuft of hair adorns his meaty father's bald pate. Their tall sedan races along on diagonal oval wheels, leaving a cloud of exhaust in its wake.

An arch over the street welcomes Luke and his family to Capão Novo. Condominium complexes fill the beach town with tall straight lines, while minimal landscaping softens the functional architecture. Eduardo Medeiros adorns his cartoony art with grays on white lined paper. In pale green and beige panels, other kids seem happy, while Luke is content in Battle in the Flower Gardens.

Pictures from Luke’s magazines intersperse the panels and notebook pages, providing a sense of the recreation opportunities available. Yet despite glimpses of grassy fields, the children who drift from one activity to another amid the blocks of buildings are reduced to naming the local arcade the Flower Gardens.

Deyvison Manes fills panels with the occasional dialogue balloon. But Eduardo’s (or Luke’s) voice whisks the story along, with black uppercase letters on white ruled paper, or perforated narrative boxes in panels. Thanks to Comixology and Superfan Promotions for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

In Eduardo Medeiros’ heartfelt coming-of-age memoir, Luke never expects that a summer will change him. Yet just as his experiences affect him, so do the people who come and go in Luke’s life. This summer will be the last one in many ways for Luke. And it will mark the author in a way that, years later, will result in Battle in the Flower Gardens.

Grey suffers from a stuttering affliction. It's gotten so bad that Carly has him shaking in his shoes every time he makes a presentation. Still, Grey tried his best to deliver his oral report at Bonaventure Cemetery. His retelling of the South's greatest superheroes battling a monster in the swamp had everyone riveted until an earthquake dropped him and his friends into a sinkhole.

Since then, things haven’t been the same. Each of his friends has developed new abilities. Grey may still stutter. Yet Grey can see events before they happen. Will his new precognitive abilities help him and his friends survive whatever Carly and the Jocks throw at them? And will the Goobers become the South’s next great superhero team? Let’s leap into The Adequates #3 and see!

Story

Carly and the Jocks may dislike how their Dodgeball game with the Goths ended. But they are outraged by the Goobers’ actions and intend to teach them a lesson. While Grey’s clairvoyance helps them escape, the Goobers owe their lives to the Goths. After offering them a timely ride in their van, the Goths explain that they may be responsible for the Goobers’ new abilities.

After showcasing their solidarity in the gym, the Goths reveal what they care about in The Adequates #3. The South's greatest superheroes may have sacrificed themselves a century ago to vanquish a monster. Yet Siouxsie, Eva, Patricia, and Glenn have their own fallen hero. And when they found a magic book, the Goths hoped to give him a second chance at life.

As Lee Loughridge and Marz Jr relate an event that preceded the field trip to Bonaventure Cemetery, the Goths also finish the story that Grey began before an earthquake interrupted his oral report. Their retelling addresses Grey’s nightmares about the monster the superheroes battled, and Void’s actions after Bayou and Moss fell.

While explaining how the Goobers' superpowers developed, the Goths fear that their actions may have loosed the monster into their world. The Goths and the Goobers must overcome difficulties to investigate this possibility. Yet before they discover if their superpowers are for good or ill, the Goobers must learn to use their new abilities to discover the dangers threatening their world in The Adequates #3.

Art

As Patricia drives the van down residential streets, Siouxsie explains the Goths' fears. The Goths sit on one side of the van, while the Goobers sit facing them. But while the Goths adopt a similar posture, Pam raises a hand when speaking, Grey sits cross-legged, and Randy pulls his knees to his chest. Two panels in the middle of the page portray a clash between Pam and Siouxsie. Then, an overhead shot shows the van passing beneath the wrought-iron arch of Bonaventure Cemetery.

Marz Jr adorns his art with a series of limited palettes. A hint of the greenery outside tints the gray van interior. A ceremony involving a pink book transpires on a blue evening. The book cover links with Pam's hair and Void's historic battle. Like the neighborhoods they passed through, greens and browns welcome the High Schoolers back to the cemetery. Yet, as on the night the Goths left the cemetery, the day the Goobers fell into the pit, and when they battled the Jocks in the gym, yellow-green light signals extraordinary abilities in The Adequates #3.

Off-screen dialogue appears in colored boxes while grounding the reader in time and location. The dark lowercase dialogue becomes uppercase for intonation, and swells for raised voices. Sound effects accompany a raging storm, an angry monster, and a researcher investigating supernatural phenomena. Thanks to Comixology and Superfan Promotions for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

While similar interests bind the Goths, Jocks, and Elite, the Goobers hang out together for mutual protection. Yet with everything in flux, one Goober grabs the spotlight, while another decides to determine their own destiny in The Adequates #3.

Many have tried to storm Blood Moon Tower. But thus far, no one has ever succeeded. As a new band of adventurers gathers, Rhys vows that this time, they will breach its defenses. A Human and an Elf in the fellowship wonder if it is possible. But when Rhys raises his flaming sword, the band charges toward the dark tower. Can these adventurers succeed where so many others have failed? And how does Braxir Hex, the lord of Blood Moon Tower, threaten their world? Let’s leap into Zero Instance #1 and see!

Story

Monsters guard the castle. More dangers lurk inside its walls. Chris almost loses sight of their objective. When they reach the inner sanctum, Rhys demonstrates how effectively he planned the raid. But then buzzing fills the air, and Rhys must leave his company of warriors to enjoy the fruits of their victory.

But this is not the end of the end of Rhys' adventures. In Zero Instance #1, another world beckons. His father worries that Rhys is spending too much time immersed in games and not enough time building a future. His mother also wants him to find a career that she can understand and respect. Yet Rhys is fulfilled. His online followers support his gaming. Rhys can pay his bills and get by. And then, he has a big event planned. If his friend Chris can set it up and market it effectively, Rhys' second attack on Braxir Hex could do wonders for his career.

Frank J Barbiere and Stephen Rhodes’ story tackles the allure of online gaming. The best players can secure lucrative careers by pursuing their beloved pastime. But while Rhys’ parents want to support his vision, the engineers at Horizon Games don’t. They designed Braxir Hex to be unbeatable. And that means that the villain can learn and adapt like a real person. But while they expect the players to exploit loopholes in their games, none suspect that their creation could endanger their world in Zero Instance #1.

Art

While demons guard the gate, soldiers stand between the crenelations atop Blood Moon Tower. Sorcerous fire burns above the tower while lightning crackles through the blood-red sky. Braxir Hex works raw energy with his hands before a red forge, a smile on his skull-like face. Rhys inspires his fellow Human, Elf, and Dwarf adventurers. Yet the Dwarf and a woman with a glowing eye lead the charge while Rhys brings up the rear in their assault on the castle.

Lauren Affe adorns Vic Malhotra’s fantasy art with contrasting primary colors in Zero Instance #1. Yellow energy electrifies the reds and blues of Blood Moon Tower, while the world around Rhys sinks into gray. He slumps as he prepares for an interview. Then, sinking into a chair, he covers his face with his hands. On what should be his big day, Rhys smiles at the corporate greeter. Yet green links the dangers of conventional life with his fantasy life.

Taylor Esposito fills white dialogue balloons with black uppercase letters. Braxir’s dialogue balloons feature small, bold letters surrounded by gray borders. Like the corporate world he despises, lowercase texts also inhabit gray boxes. Yellow boxes identify places and people, while the sounds of battle can only be banished by a buzzing phone. Thanks to Comixology and Superfan Promotions for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

While the real world continually presents obligations, the virtual world helps Rhys' spirit soar. Zero Instance #1 explores the opportunities and dangers of technological progress for a bracing science fiction and fantasy read.
