Grey, Chad, Randy, Pam, and Julie walk a tightrope at Savannah High School. Unless they improve their academic game, they will incur the Elites' wrath. And after what happened to their friend Tweak, they're keeping their heads down and their grades up. But what happens after an earthquake creates a sinkhole at Bonaventure Cemetery? Will the monster that killed the South's greatest superhero team arise to threaten civilization again? Let’s leap into The Adequates #2 and see!

Story

As Grey delivered his oral report on Bayou, Void, and Moss battling a monster in the swamp, the ground opened beneath his feet. Along with his friends Chad, Randy, Pam, and Julie, Chad fell into a sinkhole. Shocked, the kids thought they saw a monster lurking in the darkness. But evidently, Brad, Mr Woods, and Coach T-Dog found a rope, and the Goobers climbed out unharmed.

That night, Grey endured a nightmare. He didn't watch his fallen superheroes battle the monster that might end civilization. Instead, it charged toward him. The next day in the gym, Grey tells his friends about the dream in The Adequates #2. But all too soon, Coach T-Dog summons them to the basketball court. Only they’re not playing basketball. Carly from the Elites leads the Jocks against them in a game of Dodgeball.

In Lee Loughridge & Marz Jr’s story, Grey and his friends are the Goobers. Randy is legally blind. Pam is a martyr to the insects that constantly seek her out. Chad fears heights, while Julie struggles with allergies. But unlike his friends, Grey cannot fade into the background. Grey struggles with stuttering. Every time he opens his mouth, people notice him. And Carly, who wants to make Savannah High School a shining example of excellence, demands that Grey stop slowing everything down.

After failing to defend their friend Tweak, the Goobers begin the game under a cloud. Then something occurs. As the Jocks attack, Grey surprises everyone by catching a ball. His example inspires the others to rise to the challenge. None of them understands how this happened. The Goobers may lack the striking physical appearance of the Goths. They may not measure up to the excellence of the Elites. Grey and his friends may never be Jocks. Still, the Goobers take a first step toward becoming superheroes like Grey's idols in The Adequates #2.

Art

As Grey falls through the air, a hand with long fingernails emerges from the ground. When he lands on the football field, a monster charges toward him. While Grey’s friends huddle around him in the stands, the Goths stand in a line on the basketball court. The Jocks may owe their importance to their performances in the gym and on the football field. But the Goths practice military precision as they follow Siouxsie's orders.

As Marz Jr. applies a colorful palette to his fanciful art in The Adequates #2, the Jocks wear red and gray, while most of the students wear yellow, red, and blue. But like the monster with red eyes in Grey's dreams, the Goths adorn themselves in black and red. Like the gray spikes that cover the monster's body, and even fill its mouth, gray spikes adorn the Goths' necks and arms. Yet the pointy green visors that cover the monster's eyes link with the green light that surrounds Grey and his friends when they realize how they can unlock their potential.

Text in colored boxes locates readers in time and space, conveys offscreen dialogue, and identifies characters and groups. The dark lowercase dialogue becomes uppercase for intonation, and swells for raised voices. Sound effects accompany whistling, footsteps, insects, ball impacts, ticking clocks, alarms, slamming doors, crashes, screams, and everything else the Goobers are afraid of. Thanks to Comixology and Superfan Promotions for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Just because they’re Freshmen doesn’t mean the Goobers don’t want to fit in. Yet they don’t. They keep their heads down and flee from danger. As the Halloween Dance nears, the friends learn an important lesson on the importance of friendship and loyalty in The Adequates #2.
