Tim Beacon was desperate to turn his life around. So when Sam, Harry, and Louis cornered him in an alley, the dentist sensed a chance to change his luck. But now, Harry and Louis are dead. And after the Sheriff came around and discovered him melting down Leopold Auberon's good implants, Tim had to act quickly to secure his dream. Can Tim flee Hailstone and live his dream in California? Or is it too late to escape the nightmare his life has become? Let's leap into Devil's Luck: A Hailstone Story #5 and see!

Story

Leopold Auberon enjoyed a long and successful life. But when he closed the mine, he put all his miners out of work. With few friends, Leopold invested his riches in his smile. But every time Tim Beacon replaced his teeth, Leopold had to listen to the dentist's tale of woes. Tim had trained in his profession and invested everything he had into establishing a business in Hailstone, Montana. Now, after killing the Sheriff, Tim thinks he can escape justice with his cut of the gold. Still, the real treasure is Leopold’s amulet. He believes it empowers him, as it did in the mine when Harry tried to kill him, to overcome the odds life has stacked against him.

In Devil's Luck: A Hailstone Story #5, Tim is grateful to find killing surprisingly easy, but disposing of the bodies is tiresome. He has a few patients to serve before he closes up shop. One of them is Sam, who desperately needs a dentist. But an integral part of visiting a dentist is trust. And after Tim killed his friends, Sam no longer trusts him.

Rafael Scavone's double-length finale explains why Lady Myra called her employer a Lord when she visited the Sheriff to report Leopold Auberon’s disappearance. It also ponders why people pledge themselves to one faith, only to trade it in for another. As Tim Beacon's long journey toward his success nears its end, the dentist discovers that chance has factored into his success far less than he believed in Devil's Luck: A Hailstone Story #5.

Art

The lumps melt as Tim applies a torch to the crucible filled with gold teeth. Tim places the resultant gold bar in a hole behind a framed postcard. Then he wraps the Sheriff’s body in curtains, and after transporting it in his car, drags the body into the icy river. The next day, he clutches a revolver behind his back when answering the door. And when a patient arrives, Tim stuffs the gun into the back of his trousers. As he cares for his patient, the imprint of a cross adorns the wall adjacent to the framed image of California.

Eduardo Ferigato bathes the surgery in red at night. By day and night, it remains blue outside. The sun may not warm Hailstone, but brown and beige fill the surgery. While Tim’s glasses appear red inside and blue outside at night, they shine yellow during the day, as the gold bar in the wall awaits him in Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #5.

Deyvison Manes places black uppercase letters in white dialogue balloons. The letters grow bold for intonation and shrink for lowered voices. Tim’s thoughts appear as white letters in maroon boxes as he works to make his dream come true. Yet every sound in the small dental office seems amplified, and every fist that knocks on the front door alarms Tim. When he gets in the car a final time, the cold wind howls, the engine revs, and the tires skid with each turn of the road, until an explosion seems the final nail on his coffin. Thanks to Comixology and Superfan Promotions for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Tim has worked hard to get where he is. Yet despite all he’s sacrificed, he remains trapped in a small, out-of-the-way town, unable to realize his dreams. So, when fate offers him a helping hand, Tim figures that the ends justify the means. Besides, magic is watching over Tim in Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #5.

Leopold Auberon wasn't a likable man. Still, a lucky amulet brought him all the wealth and comfort he craved. Now he's dead, killed by the workers Auberon laid off when he closed his gold mine.

After two attempts to murder him, Tim killed Harry in self-defense. Hailstone's beleaguered dentist considered killing Louis and Sam to keep all of Leopold Auberon's solid gold implants for himself. Will Tim stand by the out-of-work miners? Or will greed get the better of him? Let's leap into Devil's Luck: A Hailstone Story #4 and see!

Story

Once Harry started drinking, he could be dangerous. After he killed Leopold Auberon, Harry went after Tim. Despite being the inferior fighter, Tim emerged as the survivor. But now, Tim no longer trusts Louis and Sam. He looks over his shoulder as he takes Leopold's head back to his office. And when Tim drives out that night and sees Louis approaching him, Tim assumes the miner came to kill him.

As Devil's Luck: A Hailstone Story #4 opens, the Sheriff and his deputy investigate the blood-streaked road by Tim's car. The Sheriff knows Tim has worked hard to develop useful skills, and his town needs the dentist. So, he's willing to write off the desperate miner attacking a townie. When Tim asks if he'll need to hire a lawyer, the Sheriff doubts anyone in the Attorney General's office will make an issue of Louis' death. Unless they have time on their hands and wonder why Tim drove over the man three times, that is.

In Rafael Scavone's story, Tim is a haunted man. He can't wait to get out of Hailstone, Montana. California, and setting up a new practice with his windfall, beckons. Even though his cut of the deal has increased, Tim's not inclined to be generous. Sam may be starting to doubt Tim's character. Still, like the Sheriff, Sam wants Tim to fix his teeth. And you've got to trust someone if you're going to spend hours in a chair as they work on you with drugs, pliers, and drills.

Art

A ground-level upshot reveals the Sheriff and Deputy crouching over a cloth-draped body in Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #4. A bird’s eye view shows people gathering in the street and looking down from a rooftop. Crouching beside Tim’s blood-splattered front tires and radiator, the Sheriff stares at Tim and frowns. Then he rises, smiles, and clasps the dentist’s shoulder.

As Eduardo Ferigato conveys the limited resources available in this rural outpost of civilization, he adorns the snowy evening with shades of blue and tan. Red and pink fill the darkened dentist's office, as Tim frantically goes about his subterfuge. Browns, greens, and yellows fill the Ross Inn. Tim's fractured yellow glasses link Tim’s avarice with the golden teeth he sets upon the brown wooden table.

Deyvison Manes places black uppercase letters in white dialogue balloons. The letters grow bold for intonation and shrink for lowered voices. Tim’s thoughts appear as white letters in maroon boxes as he worries about what is happening to him. After the Sheriff snaps his notebook closed, and a bag plunges into the icy waters, the sounds of fire disturb the night in Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #4. Thanks to Comixology and Superfan Promotions for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Tim wants the easy life. Yet his act of betrayal has made him a haunted man. He no longer trusts anyone. And the longer Leopold Auberon’s talisman hangs around his neck, the more desperate and suspicious Tim grows in Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #4.

Tim Beacon left the glories of Madison, Wisconsin, to return to his hometown. But after the stock market crashed, the money dried up in Hailstone, Montana. Despite being the only dentist for miles around, Tim struggled to make his mortgage payments. Then, his best patient gave him some advice. Tim must take his chances when they appear.

Ironically, Leopold Auberon's actions prompted his disgruntled employees to kill him when they had the chance. When they tried to kill Tim, the dentist dropped Auberon's severed head down the closed mine. Can Tim and Auberon's former employees find the skull filled with gold teeth? And will Sam, Louis, and Harry decide Tim is superfluous to requirements? Let's grab our six-shooters, leap into Devil's Luck: A Hailstone Story #3, and see!

Story

After a harrowing walk across a disintegrating bridge, Tim finds Leopold's lucky amulet, while Harry finds his former employer's head. Although Sam wants Tim to extract the teeth and enhance his smile, Harry is determined to extract the loose end. While Sam and Louis don't see their fight, Tim emerges as the victor in Rafael Scavone's story. But his victory comes at a price. After their actions, Tim no longer trusts Sam and Louis. He takes charge and makes his partners toe the line.

Rafael Scavone tells the story from Tim's perspective while sharing the dentist's thoughts. Tim has adopted Leopold Auberon's disdain for others. While he has hoped to improve his life, the kind and timid dentist becomes mean and menacing. And as his crisis of conscience threatens his faith, Tim's joy of living fades in Devil's Luck: A Hailstone Story #3.

While the previous issue showed how one bad decision can snowball into an impossible situation, Tim's sudden determination to take charge of his life evokes Anakin's decisions to go against the code he pledged to live by. Like Harry, Tim sought a life of ease and comfort in an idyllic locale. Instead, Tim discovers that life as an uncaring thief requires constant vigilance, with danger seemingly lurking around every corner in this fast-paced tale.

Art

Eduardo Ferigato reveals Sam and Louis’ astonishment at Tim’s transformation as the bloodsplattered dentist emerges from his deadly contest with Harry. Any sense of softness has departed his features as he points the revolver at them, before stalking away like a lord dismissing peasants. Sam and Louis cluster together as they follow, inclining their heads toward each other, but never taking their eyes off their new leader in Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #3.

After the bright yellow and orange lighting in the mine, snow floats through the air and coats a light blue landscape. Yellow headlights produce white cones of light on the snowy road. Tim’s features grow sharper, his nose more pointed, as he barks orders like the late Leopold Auberon. Pink and purple adorn his dark office as Tim gazes up at a cross before removing the severed head from the bag and gazing down at Leopold’s distorted features.

Deyvison Manes places black uppercase letters in white balloons. The letters grow bold for intonation and shrink for lowered voices. Tim’s thoughts appear as white letters in maroon boxes. Each sound disturbs Tim, even though most are innocuous in Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #3. Thanks to Comixology and Superfan Promotions for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

After Tim takes sole charge of Leopold Auberon's head and the treasure inside, the dentist remembers his patient's advice. Sadly, he has forgotten that an act of kindness turned his patient's life around in Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #3.

Tim Beacon bet his future on establishing his business in Hailstone, Montana. But in 1935, the economy wasn't going his way. He may have been the only dentist for eighty miles. Still, he struggled to make ends meet.

When his client tires of Tim’s griping, Leopold Auberon tells the struggling dentist how he became a wealthy man. How will Leopold's advice help Tim save his business? Might he make enough money to find more fertile ground for dentistry in sunny California? Let's grab our six-shooters, leap into Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #2, and see!

Story

Either Leopold Auberon distrusted banks (and the new-fangled FDIC), or he preferred to keep his money close at hand. He gave Tim stacks of cash to replace his teeth with solid gold implants. But protection against bank failures didn't insure him against disgruntled employees. After Sam, Louis, and Harry pulled Tim into an alley, they gave him a choice. Help them kidnap the employer who ruined their lives when he closed his mine, or they would end Tim's financial worries forever.

Rafael Scavone tells his story from Tim's perspective. It's not a tranquil one. Like Darth Vader, Harry altered the deal. Standing over Leopold's headless corpse, the axe-wielding drunk takes inspiration from Star-Lord and decides he'd prefer to divide their score three ways instead of four. But when Tim drops Leopold's head down the mineshaft, Sam takes charge and assures Tim that Harry won’t kill him.

Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #2 covers the search for Leopold's head. It's not a welcome journey for the three former miners. Every time Sam, Louis, and Harry descended into the Earth, they wondered if they'd return to the surface again. But for Tim, it's a journey into terror.

The frightened dentist doesn't trust homicidal Harry not to try to kill him again. Tim realizes he should have told the police chief about the men's plans and hoped that Jasper could protect him. As things stand, Tim no longer cares about getting rich in Devil's Luck: A Hailstone Story #2. He only hopes that Sam can control Harry and that he gets out of this bad deal alive.

Art

Harry threatened Tim while holding a bloody axe. But when Tim races to a platform and threatens to drop the head over the side, Harry comes at him with a six-shooter. When Harry frightens Tim into dropping the bloody sack containing their retirement, Harry hurls Tim against a wall and presses his smoking gun against the dentist’s head.

Eduardo Ferigato shows the twisted, decaying maze of timber supports that worried the miners and led to the mine's closure. A limited palette of purple, yellow, red, and brown makes the surrounding darkness palpable. Glimpsed from a distance, the men become silhouettes as Sam leads them with his lantern. When Tim shines his flashlight into Sam's mouth, he realizes the costs of poverty in Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #2.

As men descend into the darkness, they speak black uppercase letters in white balloons. The letters grow bold for intonation and frequently shrink for lowered voices. Deyvison Manes adorns Harry's intoxicated dialogue with cloudlike balloons, lightning bolt arrows, and dots. Sound effects enhance fighting, shooting, and Harry emulating Shrek when the ogre takes Donkey's mind off his fear of heights. Thanks to Comixology and Superfan Promotions for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Leopold Auberon asserted an amulet had brought him riches and self-sufficiency. Best of all, he hadn't had to care about anyone else since he acquired it. But as Tim and his partners search for Leopold’s severed head and amulet in Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #2, Harry doesn’t care whether Tim lives or dies. And while the amulet made Leopold rich, it couldn’t protect him from his embittered former employees.
