It's the first game of the season as Charlie Brown approaches the mound. Yet, when the game ends, he feels like he's dropped an ice cream cone. He fears a disastrous season. Can anyone rescue Charlie Brown from the doldrums? And will Snoopy be his team's MVP? Let’s don our uniforms, leap into Peanuts: Your Choice, Snoopy, and see!

Story

Baseball is one of the great joys of Charlie Brown’s life. Sadly, like everything else he tries, he struggles to master it. At home, everyone has a good time even when they don't win. But when Charlie Brown attends Summer Camp, others claim that he's not good enough to play “the greatest game.”

While Charlie Brown nonetheless strives to better his skills through regular practice, he also tries his hand at having a pen pal in Peanuts: Your Choice, Snoopy. Lucy wants to keep her brother and everyone else in line. So she operates a Psychiatry booth to help guide them through life. Then, she yells at them when they don’t achieve her standards. Yet while the Human characters struggle with life’s challenges, the spotlight keeps returning to a Beagle who sometimes views life as a World War I fighter pilot.

Woodstock bridges the gap between the Human characters and the casual canine in Charles Shultz's story. While Snoopy seems unbothered by the bird's concerns, Linus offers Woodstock sympathy instead of dismissing his distress. Yet Snoopy puts his foot down when Charlie Brown misbehaves. Charlie Brown may be his Human master. Still, Snoopy insists that when it comes to what matters, Charlie Brown's attitude should be (Peanuts:) Your Choice, Snoopy.

Art

When Charlie Brown's first loss of the season seems a harbinger, he takes out his frustrations on a nearby water hose. But kicking the neatly circled tubing only gets him tangled up in it. So, Charlie Brown slumps. He hangs his head and adopts a hopeful expression. When he speaks to Lucy, her reaction warms Charlie Brown's cheeks, and sweat leaps off his face.

Characters often raise their arms when expressing their anger in Peanuts: Your Choice, Snoopy. Yet Snoopy takes everything in stride. Lucy has found another way of dismissing irrelevant concerns: she shakes with bellowing laughter. Sadly, everyone else's concerns are irrelevant to Lucy.

While Charles Schulz's strips originally appeared in linear form, the newspaper panels zigzag, or take other detours as they descend the page. Characters' thoughts appear in clouds, while bold letters suggest intonation and enlarged letters accompany raised voices. Sound effects reveal the energy Woodstock puts into flying. Yet a large Z in a balloon emphasizes a relaxed approach to life. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

While some happily capitalize on others' efforts, Charlie Brown insists that success is about doing your best. His friends suggest a Biblical model to inspire him during tough times. Snoopy views life differently. The Beagle draws inspiration from an immortal fictional character to inspire his troubled Human and Avian friends in Peanuts: Your Choice, Snoopy.
