A harvest moon hangs in the night sky as Thomas Evans alights from his carriage. As he enters the Melancholia Club, he expects to find the premises bursting with people celebrating Halloween. Instead, one lonely drinker sits at a darkened table. Why is the Club so empty? And why has Thomas ventured there this evening? Let’s leap into Edgar Allan Poe: A Tale of Mystery and Intervention and see!
Story
Edgar has worked for literary journals and periodicals. His stories and poems have been published. Yet he seeks to share his visions with a larger audience. Sadly, Thomas doesn't believe that the theater-going public would embrace Edgar's unique brand of entertainment. As he sits with Edgar, Thomas doesn't reiterate the bartender's observation that the Halloween revelers cleared out when Edgar started reciting his poetry. Instead, Thomas tries to help his friend widen his horizons.
In Edgar Allan Poe: A Tale of Mystery and Intervention, Thomas suggests different hobbies and interests for his friend to pursue. He also suggests that Edgar widen his circle of friendships and explore distant places. Yet despite his desire to help, Thomas realizes the problematic nature of his suggestions. Edgar has had many bad experiences. Thomas wants to help his friend climb out of a pit, not push him into another.
Thomas’ suggestions appear as rhyming verse. While maintaining a playful tone, his concern for his friend shines through. Despite its inherent darkness, Edgar's writing covers a broad swathe of the Human experience. So, Thomas struggles to offer Edgar's a new avenue to explore. Ultimately, he realizes that Edgar is different from everyone else. Cast as a satire or farce, Norm Konyu's story champions individuality, even if Edgar's gifts preclude him from meeting society's expectations in Edgar Allan Poe: A Tale of Mystery and Intervention.
Art
Edgar’s complexion is as pale as the skulls he keeps for company. Yet the visions Norm Konyu creates from Edgar’s stories throb with vitality. As a red moon hangs in the sky, lightning crackles down before a grand house, illuminating a woman. The adjacent lake reflects the image in reverse.
Amid their stark beauty, Konyu’s art conveys the danger inherent in Poe’s stories. A cat arches its back, baring its teeth as it hisses. Or a raven perches atop a bust. Mice look on amid chains and hooks. Tattered sails help a wooden ship crest raging waves amid a deadly storm.
Vivid colors adorn the computer-generated art. Yet the double-page spreads evoke the gentle flow and paper saturation of watercolors. Uppercase verse appears amid compositions combining symbols from individual stories. Yet Edgar speaks white uppercase letters into black balloons as he imagines how talking heads can captivate an audience. After a brief biography and summary of the writer’s stories, a note about why Norm Konyu wrote the book closes his celebration of Edgar Allan Poe’s life. Final Thoughts
Like Vincent van Gogh, Edgar Allan Poe’s genius went unrecognized in his lifetime. Yet his stories and poems continue to inspire storytellers and influence popular entertainment. So, as Norm Konyu celebrates Edgar’s legacy, he casts his tale in both the past and the present, helping today’s readers connect with the tragic literary icon who died nearly two centuries ago in Edgar Allan Poe: A Tale of Mystery and Intervention.
