Tim Beacon was desperate to turn his life around. So when Sam, Harry, and Louis cornered him in an alley, the dentist sensed a chance to change his luck. But now, Harry and Louis are dead. And after the Sheriff came around and discovered him melting down Leopold Auberon's good implants, Tim had to act quickly to secure his dream. Can Tim flee Hailstone and live his dream in California? Or is it too late to escape the nightmare his life has become? Let's leap into Devil's Luck: A Hailstone Story #5 and see!

Story

Leopold Auberon enjoyed a long and successful life. But when he closed the mine, he put all his miners out of work. With few friends, Leopold invested his riches in his smile. But every time Tim Beacon replaced his teeth, Leopold had to listen to the dentist's tale of woes. Tim had trained in his profession and invested everything he had into establishing a business in Hailstone, Montana. Now, after killing the Sheriff, Tim thinks he can escape justice with his cut of the gold. Still, the real treasure is Leopold’s amulet. He believes it empowers him, as it did in the mine when Harry tried to kill him, to overcome the odds life has stacked against him.

In Devil's Luck: A Hailstone Story #5, Tim is grateful to find killing surprisingly easy, but disposing of the bodies is tiresome. He has a few patients to serve before he closes up shop. One of them is Sam, who desperately needs a dentist. But an integral part of visiting a dentist is trust. And after Tim killed his friends, Sam no longer trusts him.

Rafael Scavone's double-length finale explains why Lady Myra called her employer a Lord when she visited the Sheriff to report Leopold Auberon’s disappearance. It also ponders why people pledge themselves to one faith, only to trade it in for another. As Tim Beacon's long journey toward his success nears its end, the dentist discovers that chance has factored into his success far less than he believed in Devil's Luck: A Hailstone Story #5.

Art

The lumps melt as Tim applies a torch to the crucible filled with gold teeth. Tim places the resultant gold bar in a hole behind a framed postcard. Then he wraps the Sheriff’s body in curtains, and after transporting it in his car, drags the body into the icy river. The next day, he clutches a revolver behind his back when answering the door. And when a patient arrives, Tim stuffs the gun into the back of his trousers. As he cares for his patient, the imprint of a cross adorns the wall adjacent to the framed image of California.

Eduardo Ferigato bathes the surgery in red at night. By day and night, it remains blue outside. The sun may not warm Hailstone, but brown and beige fill the surgery. While Tim’s glasses appear red inside and blue outside at night, they shine yellow during the day, as the gold bar in the wall awaits him in Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #5.

Deyvison Manes places black uppercase letters in white dialogue balloons. The letters grow bold for intonation and shrink for lowered voices. Tim’s thoughts appear as white letters in maroon boxes as he works to make his dream come true. Yet every sound in the small dental office seems amplified, and every fist that knocks on the front door alarms Tim. When he gets in the car a final time, the cold wind howls, the engine revs, and the tires skid with each turn of the road, until an explosion seems the final nail on his coffin. Final Thoughts

Tim has worked hard to get where he is. Yet despite all he’s sacrificed, he remains trapped in a small, out-of-the-way town, unable to realize his dreams. So, when fate offers him a helping hand, Tim figures that the ends justify the means. Besides, magic is watching over Tim in Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story #5.
