Mike Wellman on creating Indie Comics

Mike Wellman on creating Indie Comics

When Mike Wellman ran a shop in the Los Angeles area, he realized that few characters in the books he sold looked like his customers. So, he decided to create a story different from what was available from the established publishers, using a hero they could identify with. The result was Mac Afro, which he described as Shaft meets Star Wars.

Creating comics also allowed Mike to explore his passions. Mike loves rock music. When the opportunity to create comics based on his favorite rock bands arose, he jumped at the chance. The result: A flipbook based on Faith No More and Mr Bungle, a side project from the lead singer of Faith No More.

Like many of us, Mike followed what was happening in Washington, DC. So he created comics to explore political themes. One project he’s proud of is A Shadow Called Danger. It’s a webcomic that he created with Bradley C Rader. He showed off a collection of the series as a trade paperback at WonderCon 2026.

Thanks to Mike Wellman and WonderCon 2026 for sharing this story with us.
