Considering a visit to the North Pole? Yanni the Yeti wants to show you what makes Santa's village great. You can't go wrong by booking a tour with Yanni. Or can you? Let's grab a thermos of hot cocoa, leap into Stop That Penguin HC, and find out!

 

Story

Yanni may be new to this tour guide lark. Still, he carries an official flag. What could be easier than showing off all the places that make Santa's community sparkle? Yanni dazzles his guests with a visit to Reindeer School. The children see young reindeer training in the athletic feats they must master to pull Santa's sleigh. Yanni can't remember Robbie, but he drops enough familiar names to remind children of the importance of physical education.

 

In Stop That Penguin HC, Yanni’s next stop is the Observatory. The Yeti leads his charges up steps inside a tower to join the elf at one of the telescopes. The astronomy elves track Santa so he doesn't get lost during his around-the-world jaunts. Another stop is Santa's workshop, where the elves oversee an automated assembly line. These elves have studied robotics. They programmed the toy-making robots to ensure everyone on Santa's Nice List gets a Tickle Me Elmo, Turbo Man action figure, or whatever hot new toy the good kiddies want.

 

While Annie Auerbach teaches children the importance of physical education and science, she throws her Yeti a curveball. Yanni doesn’t realize that penguins reside at the North Pole. One accompanies Yanni on the tour. But then the penguin gets impatient and captures Yanni's flag. The penguin leads the children to places Yanni would fear to tread, such as Santa's Study. Yanni discovers that more tuxedoed Happy Feet have immigrated from Antarctica to help the elves up north. In Stop The Penguin HC, Yanni realizes he has lost control. He must recapture the flag, or people will start booking penguin-guided tours instead!

 

Art

Kyle Beckett shows the elves putting young reindeer through their paces. The elves carry clipboards, move hurdles on the track, and struggle to ground a novice flyer. Giant radar dishes surround the towers rising from the snow while an elf at ground level studies a computer monitor. Then, Yanni leads the children to the Snowman Mountain Ice Hotel. Unlike Gustav Graves' ice palace in Die Another Day, drones bring steaming mugs of cocoa to the guests.

 

Amid the cats, dogs, birds, and elves at the North Pole, Yanni is the most appealing character in Stop The Penguin HC. His blue fur evokes a Christmas tree. His large eyes and expressions indicate how much Yanni enjoys leading tours and fears losing his job.

 

Kyle Beckett paints his whimsical characters and buildings with bright and attractive colors. The colorful faces suggest that everyone is welcome in Santa's country. Orange and yellow fill the sky over the immense red Cookie Factory. Perhaps it is the source of the Northern Lights? Cutaways reveal a blue interior filled with talented elves and penguin immigrants. Trains deliver cookies, biscuits, and milk to the workers.

 

Large, bold, lowercase black letters show Yanni's dialogue, while words swell and change color for intonation or volume. White or colored uppercase letters introduce each new location or building. The lettering appears in colored backgrounds or white space between vignettes. When Yanni finally makes his play, the Yeti speaks large uppercase red letters into a dialogue balloon. A yellow-and-pink effect helps us hear his desperate attempt to reclaim his flag. Thanks to Dynamite for providing a copy for review.

 

Final Thoughts

When Yanni leads a tour of the North Pole, a black-and-white miscreant takes over the Yeti's job. Stop That Penguin HC reveals the importance of school and sports and how immigration and diversity make the North Pole one of the most wondrous places on Earth.

Story

After a family purchases a plot of land in Texas, the parents do construction work while the children play. Away from the assault on their senses, the children's imaginations soar. Inspired by how their parents are learning new skills, the children help where they can and investigate the world around them. Animals, plants, insects, and birds provide a glimpse into the wonders of nature. Each discovery inspires them to learn more.

 

The British comedy The Good Life (titled Good Neighbors in the United States) inspired families to plow up their lawns, grow their food, and raise animals. It was one of Queen Elizabeth's favorite shows. Sadly, the movement didn't last. Self-sufficiency in the suburbs proved as elusive as Tom and Barbara Good found it. But the family in Unschool Discoveries: Venturing into the Unknown can access tools people in the 1970s didn't have. The family uses power tools and renewable technology. The internet brings all the information they need to solve the problems they encounter.

 

These Techno-Homesteaders may not send their children to school. Still, the parents and children in Danii Oliver & Ivy Braithwaite’s story spend each day learning. They have fun, focus more on each other than the latest music or TV series, and pursue their curiosity instead of subscribing to a system of mandated courses and testing. It’s hard not to admire the family in Unschool Discoveries: Venturing into the Unknown and wish them every success in pursuing their dreams. 

 

 

 

 

Art

Bags of trash form a wall outside deteriorating buildings lacking individuality. Color welcomes the family to Texas. While Danii Oliver paints the sky with luminous hues, colored pencil strokes enliven the plants, buildings, animals, and people. The colors often substitute for shading, suggesting the intense sunlight of the Lone Star State. The children play with their tablets and gaming consoles. Yet they ride in an ATV, run across their land, and help their parents tend to plants and animals.

 

As their parents study each night, figuring out what they must learn to meet tomorrow’s challenges, the children also read, investigate sensory bins, and do art. The children in Unschool Discoveries: Venturing into the Unknown learn responsibility from caring for animals. They learn about their ecosystem by raising plants. As in centuries past, harvest brings rejoicing, as nature rewards the family for hard work and devotion.

 

Large uppercase black letters fill the backgrounds. The rhyming sentences are easy and fun to read. Black-and-white labels identify the plants, insects, and animals that share the techno-homesteaders' lives. When the family gathers in the evening to read, write, work on their computers, or do art, numbers, equations, letters, symbols, and drawings fill the air above their joyous, absorbed expressions.

 

 

 

 

Final Thoughts

Unschool Discoveries: Venturing into the Unknown proposes a new way of life. Most families may not be inclined to brave the pitfalls lining the techno-homesteaders' path. But the story and art make clear that joy and discovery await the adventurous souls who do.

Story

Autumn Seasons is a senior correspondent for The Global Gazette. She has written about the silence that has fallen on Neocairo. Air Traffic Control no longer communicates with arriving airplanes. No one responds to telegrams. People who travel there do not return.

 

Recently, Autumn has gone as silent as Neocairo. So when Spring gets a letter from Autumn, and the wind blows it out of her hands, Spring hops onto her scooter. She slips between pedestrians and forces them to move out of her way. Her antics provoke outrage and endanger her future as a letter carrier.

 

Spring speaks as readily to animals and birds as she does to Humans. Perhaps she understands their vocalizations. Spring lives in a world separated from us by time in The Seasons #1. Names like New Gualia, Neocairo, Lilve River, and the University of Rexandria suggest an alternative history. Spring's world resembles ours from a century ago. Yet modern plastic bins line New Gaulian streets on trash pickup days. Workers use jetpacks instead of cherry pickers and cranes.

 

Rick Remender ushers us into a world that has known war. Yet, people get on with their lives. They wear fine clothes and uniforms when they venture outside in New Gaulia. They purchase muffins, breads, and cakes from Pat's Bakery. Readers can procure the latest vampire novel and coffee in a disposable cup from Beans N Books. A billboard promotes perfume.

 

While no one complains when the circus hits town, perhaps they should. In The Seasons #1, Neocairo fell silent when the circus left town. No one there rides a scooter through the wreckage-strewn streets. Nor do they enjoy a muffin and coffee while reading the latest vampire novel.

 

Art

Spring races down the cobblestone street past stores and shoppers. Her scooter hits the crest of the road and hurtles into the air. Spring's braids and jacket catch the wind as she races downhill. Spring bumps onto the curb and knocks hats, purses, and boxes into the air. Gilbert splashes from the water-filled globe strapped to Spring's scooter in The Seasons #1. Then Spring demonstrates feats that evoke action in the big tent as she pursues an envelope covered in stamps.

 

Compared with Spring’s frantic actions in New Gaulia, the inhabitants of Neocairo are more sedate. They sprawl on the ground. People slump against walls. Most stare into a hand mirror and smile. While Matheus Lopes paints New Gaulia in lively pastels, Neocairo burns with yellow, orange, tan, and brown. Only the festive circus brings vibrancy to the desert town. Camels lie in rubble-strewn streets, fires burn, and smoke rises into the sky.

 

Like the mirrors that fascinate Neocairo's inhabitants, purple invades Autumn’s black and orange passenger car. But Paul Azaceta leaves the windows blank in The Seasons #1 as Autumn writes her letter. After writing Urgent in big red letters, the reporter affixes stamps to an envelope.

 

Autumn writes italicized lowercase letters onto scraps of beige parchment. People express their concerns with uppercase white letters. Rus Wooton enlivens Spring's racing, flying, and crashing with enlarged colored dialogue and vibrant sound effects. But the small, lowercase excerpts from Autumn's report squeeze into off-white boxes. Barking fills the air in Neocairo, expressing outrage at the departing circus. Final Thoughts

In The Seasons #1, a traveling circus infects spectators with a strange malaise. Spring Seasons yearns to learn what Autumn has discovered about her troubled family. But Autumn's letter arrives as a circus hits town, and a clown gives Spring a gift.

When the forest guardian finds a shackled child, something in her sad eyes touches his internal mechanisms. The metal man frees the Human girl. He packs supplies, puts on traveling clothes, and escorts her out of the forest. Where is the metal man taking her? And why did he give the Human girl a hooded cape adorned with horns? Let’s grab our walking sticks, leap into Somali and the Forest Spirit Vol 1, and find out!

 

Story

The first town they visit proves pivotal in the traveler's burgeoning relationship. The child knows her name is Somali but little else. The metal man knows about civilization but lacks experience with those living outside his forest. The inhabitants clamor to meet the forest guardian. They may live in a town. Still, they revere the woodlands for their life and vitality.

 

Toad Ma offers them free food, hoping to fill her restaurant with curious customers. The forest guardian tells them he is searching for Humans. Some townspeople recall Humans for sale in the marketplace. Toad Ma ate one once but prefers other foods. When the townspeople inquire about Somali, the forest guardian introduces her as a Minotaur. The locals don’t question his declaration. Still, a False Cat with five eyes thinks she smells delicious.

 

After finding no trace of Humans in the town, the forest guardian and the girl continue their journey. In Somali and the Forest Spirit Vol 1, the metal man has limited funds for their journey, so he buys an old map. The seller warns him that some landmarks may have vanished. Sadly, the golem gets lost following the obsolete map. The pair end up in a Relict Forest. The only healthy plants sprout from the giant animal carcass of the former guardian. The gray trees and white leaves remind the metal man of his sacrifice. By escorting Somali on a mission to find her parents, he condemned his forest to wither and die.

 

Yako Gureishi shares the wonder this odd couple feels for each other. The girl delights in the taste of food and each discovery. The forest guardian claims he has no feelings. Yet he argues with her, tends to her wounds, and grows unsettled when she expresses pain. She calls him Dad and holds his hand while they walk. They meet other people in the forest as they search for clues to her heritage. One shares his tale about leaving home and carrying on the skills his mother taught him. Others practice magic and commune with fairies. The forest guardian learns new skills and gets more in tune with his feelings through interacting with others.

 

Art

Yako Gureishi doesn't waste time launching into Somali and her protector’s story in Somali and the Forest Spirit Vol 1. One page reveals a forlorn child in chains, and a metal man kneels before her. On the next page, they wear traveling clothes and cloaks, and the golem has given Somali lace-up boots. While the golem felt free to expose his inner workings in his forest, he strides through the land like Aragorn.

 

The Forest Guardian brings the girl into a walled city. Plants and giant mushrooms grow in the narrow streets. Trees and bridges shelter people going about their day. Mammals, reptiles, and birds wear clothes and hats. A woman with six arms waits tables and gifts Somali a three-eyed fish on a plate.

 

The golem can appear as fearsome as the alligator and dinosaur-like citizens who walk upright and wear clothes. He wears a lace-up mask over his face and hides the large eye in the center of his "face." After Somali wanders off and he hurries to find her, the golem suggests she hold one of his metal fingers with her tiny hand. She may wander to explore the animals and plants, but Somali returns to walk or sit beside him. When she cuddles beside him, he rests his hand on her back as she sleeps.

 

Motoko Tamamuro & Jonathan Clements translate the uppercase dialogue that inhabits balloons and the background. Somali and the Forest Spirit Vol 1 concentrates more on character interaction and growth than action. Still, the rattle of wheels through the forest alerts the golem to danger. And when someone removes her hood, Ayoub Bensidi’s sound effects help you feel the Forest Guardian's inner turmoil. Thanks to Titan Manga for providing a copy for review.

 

 

Final Thoughts

Compared with the giant animals that guarded their forests, golems seem immortal. But everything has its time. The metal man in Somali and the Forest Spirit Vol 1 has protected his forest for hundreds of years. Now, he has a new purpose. He wants to travel and reunite a lost child with her parents. Leaving the only home he has ever known, the golem explores nearby forests, towns, and villages. As he searches for the endangered Humans, the golem gets a chance to learn and grow, just like the girl he protects.

Story

While Bailey yearns to return home, engage in meaningful battles alongside Spider-Man, and learn how to divide fractions with his new friends Marco and Larissa, this is the moment Maka Akana has waited for. Her mutant abilities let her temporarily inhabit the minds of others. But the overwhelming input from Bailey's ten eyes and his conflict with his monstrous side overwhelmed her.

 

Copying other people's fighting abilities and profiting off their years of training was an improvement over winning chess tournaments, rock music festivals, and cliff-diving tournaments. While she can still borrow others' identities, Maka is Spider-Girl forever. And she doesn't like it at all. So, no matter how much Bailey Briggs cares about her, Maka Akana is determined to destroy him in Spider-Boy #15.

 

 

 

Art

Humberto Ramos & Edgar Delgado return us to the night Spider-Girl met Bailey. Clad in a costume that evokes characters like Harlequin in the Italian Commedia Dell’arte, Maka flees the museum after gazing into Bailey’s eyes. She may rock a superhero landing. But when Maka removes her mask, her face reflects how the raging turmoil in Bailey's mind affected her. Yet when she looks at her mentor, she glimpses a side of Bullseye few others see.

 

While Mist gazes down on the fight wearing a white mask and gold horns, Bailey fights an opponent wearing an animal mask. When Bailey Monsters Out in Spider-Boy #15, the yellow lenses covering his eyes reflect this orange-and-black mask, and triangular teeth fill his mouth. 

 

 

 

After his semifinal bout, Hulkette and Tigress show Bailey frowns, but Spider-Girl reaches for the sky. Then she removes white bracelets while Bullseye places a deck of cards in a wooden box. Paco Medina & Erick Arciniega show how Bulleye observes the letter of the law while ignoring its spirit. As he faces opponents alongside Spider-Girl, Bullseye adopts Jason Bourne’s philosophy and turns seemingly innocuous items into weapons.

 

Joe Caramagna thwips uppercase black lettering into white dialogue balloons and narrative boxes. Final Thoughts

Young people look to their mentors for guidance. As they grow, their values may diverge from those of their mentors. In Spider-Boy #15, Bailey warns Spider-Girl to look for someone more trustworthy. But while Bullseye has always encouraged Spider-Girl's desires, Daredevil forces Bailey Briggs to fight in a contest he disdains.
