It is a cold, snowy day in 1902. Two lumberjacks trudge along a snow-covered path through the trees in the Pacific Northwest. As Smith follows his partner, he wonders why they are searching for their more experienced colleagues. Liam knows Gaston and Henri are used to being on their own in the woods. Still, they haven't heard from them in two days.
When Liam and Smith reach the worksite, they find Gaston and Henry's gear near the last tree they worked on. But no trace of their fellow loggers remains. Did the recent storm carry Gaston and Henri away? And how might their disappearance impact people in the future? Let's grab our time rings, leap into The Space Between The Trees HC, and see!
Story
In 2022, Meera and Mark are shopping for a home. But after touring a townhouse, they feel like giving up. The houses in the Pine Grove development leave no space between. When Mark and Meera look out of the townhouse’s windows, all they see are the adjacent homes. As they drive away from their latest disappointment, they yearn for a place to live where they can connect with nature. But when Mark starts telling Meera about his great aunt, who lived in an old farmhouse and was frightened of the trees, the road abruptly ends.
In The Space Between the Trees HC, we follow Mark and Meera as they awaken in their car. The damaged vehicle sits between the trees. Mark and Meera can't see the road. Some things inside the car also don't seem right. But no matter. The road can't be far away. Once they reach it, they can readily get water, call for help, and get anything they want.
Mark and Meera may not own a home. But they find comfort in each other's company. That becomes important as they discover the mysteries of the forest. When they get separated, they yearn for each other's company. Mark and Meera accept each other's opinions and suggestions. The couple alternates leadership without complaint. Yet no matter what they do, or what direction they take, Mark and Meera keep returning to an old-growth tree. They know it's the same one, because it bears a scar where someone once tried to cut it down.
Art
Mark and Meera clasp hands as they stand with their backs to the townhome. A red banner and sign match their automobile. Mark’s clothes and Meera’s slacks are blue like the townhouse's exterior paint. Yet as they get in their car and drive away, Mark and Meera wax lyrical about green. Brown poles and green translucent cones arise around them as they drive through the forest. While blue sky hangs over the cleared land, yellow hovers near the trees. But then they reach a field of light brown logs and dark brown stumps. The crane loading the logs on the red truck’s trailer is also yellow.
While the cracks in Mark’s phone evoke a spider web, they match the fractures in the windscreen in The Space Between the Trees HC. The light comes and goes, striving to pierce the forest canopy in all directions. It threatens to blind them when Mark realizes the road has disappeared. Along with the trees, Mark and Meera glow, forming reverse silhouettes as they contemplate abandoning their car and ascending a hill.
Norm Konyu conjures wonder and horror as a couple navigate a living maze in The Space Between the Trees HC. Amid scenes that span space and time, easily readable uppercase black dialogue inhabits white balloons. Words grow bold and swell when danger threatens. Sounds fill the air when Mark and Meera's words and actions leave echoes behind. Sound effects also invade the watercolor-like art when the trees capture the couple and try to separate them. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.
Now, let's take a look inside:
Final Thoughts
While some people sacrifice to live in remote areas, most people flock to cities where they can enjoy the community and convenience of civilization. Yet Norm Konyu suggests another reason people clear away nature to live in more controlled settings. When prospective homebuyers get lost in the woods, they discover the wild and timeless aspect of Mother Nature in The Space Between the Trees.
