When Revelation unleashed the X-Virus, it turned Humans into Mutants or killed them. Yet, the Mutants were not immune to its power. It made some more of what they were. Others who fled the area of infection lost their former Mutant abilities and appearance.

In Vancouver, British Columbia, Leonard Two Bears is about as far from where the Gene Bomb detonated as he can be in North America. When Vindicator breaks into his apartment, she tells him that the X-Virus is still spreading. It will eventually overtake not just Vancouver, but all of North America, and eventually the entire world. Then Heather Hudson raises the subject of her husband, and the man who helped Leonard become The Heavenly Wolverine. Will Leonard agree to help Heather? And can they free Logan from Revelation's control? Let’s leap into The Last Wolverine #2 and see!

Story

The X-Virus has killed millions. In the Revelation Territories, formerly bustling cities are overgrown, with nature reclaiming the urban landscape. The virus has also swept through Eastern Canada, overtaking cities and leaving villages behind. In areas safe for habitation, Humans have even opted for cybernetic companions instead of seeking a Human mate.

In The Last Wolverine #2, Kurt Waggoner is one of the lucky ones. Like Leonard, he traded the Revelation Territories for Vancouver. Outside the X-Virus’ influence, Leonard made peace with his Wendigo spirit, while Kurt lost his Mutant abilities. Like Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame, Kurt enjoys life with his Human wife and children. But Logan was his friend. And after Humans turned Professor Xavier’s school into a prison for Mutants, Kurt and Logan helped Rogue and Gambit mentor the Outliers.

In Saladin Ahmed’s story, Vindicator promises Leonard they can save Logan. But the X-Virus will affect them long before they reach him. Heather Hudson is Human. Her Vindicator suit will have to work overtime to filter out the X-Virus, leaving no power to help combat Revelation's Seraphs. And as they travel, Revelation's agents will try to stop them.

For The Heavenly Wolverine and Vindicator to have a chance of succeeding, they need Nightcrawler. They're not certain Kurt can regain what he lost. Heather may succumb to the X-Virus. The Wendigo's ferocity may overcome Leonard's reason. But all three are desperate to save their friend, mentor, and husband from the brainwashed killer he has become.

Art

While blues and greens surround Vancouver, buildings rise toward hovering electric billboards. As Leonard and Heather converse on a rooftop, they behold the sanctuary they are leaving behind. The duo's yellow, blue, and red clothes echo the surrounding windows, while Leonard's white fur links him with Heather's suit. The tiger-stripe design of his suit seems at home with Heather's leonine orange hair. Yet a black, white, and red memory of Wolverine pairs with Heather's Vindicator suit. With her eyepatch, Heather evokes Nick Fury, while Leonard's fur and features recall Beast.

Carlos Lopez’s colors take on neon hues when Leonard, Heather, and Kurt meet in Stanley Park. White energy ripples across the belly of a decloaking plane as thrusters expel white pillars. As in Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark, a plane streaks across a map in The Last Wolverine #2. Then Edgar Salazar reveals how nature is overtaking civilization, as greenery obscures historic landmarks, like in Logan's Run and Planet of the Apes.

As three heroes mount their desperate mission, Cory Petit snikts black uppercase words into white dialogue balloons, narrative boxes, and clouds. The letters grow bold for intonation and shrink for lowered voices. Sound effects accompany hand-to-hand combat, weapons fire, and a hero reclaiming his powers in The Last Wolverine #2. Thanks to Marvel Comics for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Everyone needs a cause to fight for. But when we listen to voices telling us what we should do, it's easy to lose sight of who we are. Filled with likeable characters, scenic vistas, and vibrant coloring, The Last Wolverine #2 reminds us of the dangers of letting our zeal for a cause overcome our compassion.

DC K.O. All Fight Month, round 7 of 8!

A fight you never expected but are dying to see!

In case you missed it, here’s a message from DC K.O. series co-architect Scott Snyder:

When Josh and I were coming up with K.O., we realized that there’s a point in the story where this big tournament all the characters are taking part in would have an all-out brawl section. So the result of that is a whole month of Slugfests fans have speculated about for decades. These are one-shot special issues that tie into the main story of DC K.O. and show the brutal face-offs between friends and foes alike. Some results will shock you, some may thrill you, but that’s what this event is all about. Knock down, drag out, brutal fun.

The X-Men fought for Mutant equality. But no matter how hard they tried, the X-Men failed to stamp out prejudice, repression, and persecution. So, Doug Ramsey, aka Revelation, unleashed a virus that killed Humans or turned them into Mutants.

Revelation has created a Mutant paradise in the former United States. But pockets of resistance still linger. Terrorists and assassins attempt to kill the Mutants’ glorious leader. Revelation can strip dissidents of their ability to communicate. But how does he control his growing territory as the X-Virus spreads across the former United States? And how does Revelation nip trouble in the bud before it can bite him? Let’s leap into Omega Kids #2 and see!

Story

Once, Quentin Quire was one of Professor Xavier's brightest students. Now, he leads a surveillance network for Revelation. Quentin has Omega Kids stationed throughout the Revelation Territories. When the young psychics observe dissidents, protestors, and fugitives, they can report their findings to him. But within his vast network, Quentin personally oversees his Elite team. Curtis Terrell Jr, Nell Widows, and Ayla Bozkurt are teenagers. Bailey Quinn is only eight years old. Yet these kids help him prevent uprisings in Revelation’s capital city.

In Omega Kids #2, Quentin urges his team to find insurgents in a Philadelphia suburb. While they can kill rebels and terrorists with a thought, the kids can also edit people's memories to keep them out of trouble. But Quentin urges them to carefully assess each subject before rushing to judgment.

Quentin drives his top team hard. He is awed by their potential. But Quentin wishes he were closer to them. And he knows they are as capable of inflicting needless suffering and death as they are of safeguarding Revelation. Sadly, Quentin thinks he can have it both ways in Tony Fleecs’s story. Quentin believes he can employ classical and operant conditioning techniques to transform children into soldiers while maintaining a healthy parental relationship.

While the kids constantly signal that they don't share his views, Quentin struggles to close the distance to them. What Quentin doesn't realize in Omega Kids #2 is that the children have turned his strengths against him. Quentin may believe that the kids are all right. But Curtis Terrell Jr, Nell Widows, Ayla Bozkurt, and Bailey Quinn insist, “This is my generation.”

Art

Curtis Terrell Jr is an insecure redhead. Nell Widows has blue hair and horns. Ayla Bozkurt wears teal gloves, a turtleneck, and a light-green bandana in her dark hair. Even though skin covers her eyes, she frequently smiles. Bailey Quinn may be 8 years old, but the blonde radiates confidence and leadership. All wear black jackets bearing a lavender omega symbol. Fer Sifuentes-Sujo lavishes a loaded palette on "Doug's Green Hell," as Quentin calls it. But lavender dominates scenes. The children turn lavender in their astral forms and relax in their lavender refuge. Lavender smoke lingers after their attacks.

Bailey and her friends relax on a peaceful hillside beneath a sky filled with mathematical equations and symbols. The residents of Beverly, Massachusetts, may chafe at Carol Danvers' leadership as their shielded town falls into disrepair in the Binary series. But like Republic City after Korra allows the spirit world to mingle with her own, trees, vines, and plants climb walls and push through streets. When the children place their hands against their heads, Andrés Genolet shows their target’s thoughts and memories. An absent loved one takes on a ghost-like appearance. But when they rush to judgment, a familiar symbol rises in Omega Kids #2.

Travis Lanham places black uppercase letters in white dialogue balloons. Quentin's team shares their thoughts via clouds and wavy arrows. White letters in black boxes identify people and places. The words grow bold for inflection and swell for raised voices, while sound effects heighten attacks. Yet as Quentin affects his affable charm and struggles to contain his impatience, his T-shirt bears the inscription, "Magneto was weak." Thanks to Marvel Comics for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Quentin Quinn can create a universe with his mind. But as he tries to instill his values in his students, they hide their thoughts and feelings from him. The children express these in their secret place, a construct of their own making. And while he tries to squash rebellions before they start, Quentin doesn't realize that one is brewing in his inner circle in Omega Kids #2.
