Absolute Wonder Woman #21

After Zatanna Zatara weakened Diana, Giovanni Zatara attacked her. With Veronica Cale's attack squad wreaking havoc in Gateway City, Barbara Minerva watched the woman she idolized flee. After regaining a measure of strength at the Hieron, Diana returned to the fighting. Still, the Amazon she admired couldn't prevent Giganta from capturing her.

Even if she fled the fighting once, Barbara believed that Diana would rescue her from Cale's clutches. But as she lay on a torture table, Veronica Cale tells Barbara that Diana escaped from Area 41 without rescuing her. Again. How will the woman who celebrated Diana's return to her world with a museum exhibit react to Cale's announcement? And bound in the Underworld by her deal with Hades, what can Diana do to aid Barbara?

When Zatanna's father attacked her, Diana fled. Barbara Minerva watched as the Amazon she dedicated her new exhibit to abandoned her. Then, the people of Gateway City saw Wonder Woman fall into the sea. When Pegasus carried her to the Hieron, Zatanna blew past Diana’s wards, invading her sacred home.

Zatanna released Diana from her spell, but she won’t help the Amazon attack her father. Diana has witnessed how Veronica Cale can force people to commit unspeakable crimes. Still, she must protect the people in Gateway City from the burning skeleton, Giganta, and whatever else Cale sends to attack them. Can the Troika free Giovanni Zatara from Cale's control? And will the attack in the Natural History Museum shake the public's faith in Diana? Let’s leap into Absolute Wonder Woman #19 and see!

Story

Giovanni Zatara tormented Diana with fire. As her magic arm melted away, fire burned in her veins. Zatara’s daughter may have freed Diana from her control. Still, restoring her body and her magic arm takes a toll on Diana. As she returns to Gateway City, Diana marches toward Zatara. She doesn’t know if she can free him from Veronica Cale’s control. Nor does Diana know if she can survive the encounter. Still, Diana risks her life to protect people from overwhelming forces.

In Absolute Wonder Woman #19, Diana wields a new lasso. Imbued with the essence of three gods, she hopes it can reveal the magician’s deepest secrets. Harnessing her magic to help people is nothing new to Diana. After experiencing Medusa’s pain, Diana couldn’t rest until she braved the Gorgon’s glare to free her from her isolation. This time, Diana carries the Troika instead of Sacrifice, the lasso of Transmogrification. But she is weak and may lack the concentration to control it.

Diana has always been special. Exiled from her people, Circe raised her on an island in Hell. Yet her patron goddesses visited Diana regularly to talk with her, train her, and show her how much they loved her. After Diana confronted Gaia with the truth about their world, Kelly Thompson reveals why the gods trained her and fortified the Amazon with aspects of themselves.

Diana may never know why the goddess she loved abandoned her. Her longing to see Aphrodite again plagues her flagging spirit. Yet to protect the people of Gateway City and heal a tormented magician, Diana confronts Zatara in Absolute Wonder Woman #19.

Art

While Circe works with glowing thread, Aphrodite gazes into the fire. When the goddess rises from the floor, Circe abandons the yarn and her chair, pausing to gaze at her adoptive daughter before obeying. As she dwells in Diana's heart, Aphrodite occupies the center of each page in which she appears. Yet when readers arrive in the present, a tall, thin panel obscures an overhead view of Gateway City as Steve and Etta carry the endangered to safety.

As Diana appears fighting the skeleton, the panel shapes of the two-page layout evoke the yellow and orange flames Zatara hurls at her. The same orange fires that warmed Circe’s home in Hell burn in Gateway City. The overwhelming orange tinges Giganta’s hair and skin as she seeks an adversary. Despite wielding the Troika instead of Sacrifice, Diana's skin turns green, evoking Medusa and her sisters, as she and Zatara undergo their trial. Yet as the colors of his inner torment link past with present, Veronica Cale's pink jacket evokes Diana's beloved goddess in Absolute Wonder Woman #19.

While Hayden Sherman’s inventive page layouts and Jordie Bellaire’s contrasting colors make powerful visual statements, Becca Carey uses white block letters to differentiate time and place. Uppercase black letters occupy white dialogue balloons. Diana’s thoughts fill white narrative boxes with WW in the top-left corner. Blue backwards words in white balloons with blue borders attempt to repel adversaries. As Aphrodite’s white words in red balloons with pink borders convey concern, Diana’s white letters in black balloons with purple and pink borders offer assistance. Sound effects change from yellow to orange and red as the stakes for everyone rise in Gateway City. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

Life is a journey of continual transformation. But each time we enter another chapter of our lives, it takes bravery to approach the crossroads. We need strength and clarity to navigate the intersecting paths, and the determination to travel a new one. When Diana moved to Gateway City, each of her new friends chose to brave the crossroads to begin a new journey with her. But now, as a weakened Diana approaches an angry, tormented magician, the Amazon wonders if she can guide Giovanni Zatara through his crossroads in Absolute Wonder Woman #19.

She appeared amid smoke and fire at the Gateway City Natural History Museum. After binding Diana's magic to her in Barbara's new exhibition, Zatanna used Diana to free herself from Director Cale's control.

While Diana's battle across Gateway City validated Steve Trevor's trust in her, it also confirmed the government's fears. How will Veronica Cale's Suicide Squad attack Diana next? And can Zatanna still control Diana? Let’s raise our magic wards, leap into Absolute Wonder Woman #18, and see!

Story

When Diana returns to the Museum, she finds Cheetah slain. Then, a fiery figure appears. He wields the same magic as Zatanna and strips Diana of her defenses. Unable to repel his assault or protect the people of Gateway City, Diana can only flee for her life.

While her friends seek to help her, Aphrodite’s words return to Diana at the Hieron. Aphrodite counseled her that love was complicated and dangerous. It could foster great beauty, yet it could also nurture horrors. Diana mused that opening herself to others would help her bond with people and help them embrace a better version of themselves. But in Absolute Wonder Woman #18, Diana discovers that imagining something is vastly different from experiencing it.

While Kelly Thompson intersperses Diana's fight for her life with her memories of Aphrodite on the Wild Isle, Zatanna returns. Once more, Zatanna blows through Diana's defenses like they don't exist. And as Diana lies on the ground in agony, the invader is rude to her friends.

As witches, Diana and Zatanna share a common heritage. By stripping Diana of her defenses, Zatanna has violated Diana's trust in the community of witchcraft. Veronica Cale forced Zatanna to follow her orders. But in Absolute Wonder Woman #18, Diana cannot forget how it felt for a kindred spirit, and someone she held to a higher standard, to violate her so completely.

Art

Diana glows red, orange, and yellow as she clutches the stump of her melted arm. Heat from the yellow fire shrouding the walking skeleton tinges everything nearby red. Diana bursts through panels as she rises above the forest of towers, and the gray beach where she once defended Gateway City. Then she falls into the blue/green sea where she once combatted a kaiju-sized threat.

Moonlight colors the swirls and plumes of disturbed water yellow as Diana sinks. After battling a fiery skeleton, a skeletal winged horse swoops in to rescue her. As Hayden Sherman shows Pegasus flying away, gray, white, and blue water droplets leap from its hooves and wings back to the sea that could not contain the Witch of the Wild Isle. After fleeing the straight-lined towers of Gateway City, Pegasus brings Diana to the arching splendor of the Hieron. Jordie Bellaire links the yellow bubbles and currents in the sea with yellow pinpricks glowing amid the garden. Yet yellow fire swirls around the skeleton Diana left behind, revealing glimpses of his identity in Absolute Wonder Woman #18.

Becca Carey uses white block letters to differentiate time and place as Diana’s memories merge with her flight. Uppercase black letters occupy white dialogue balloons. Diana's thoughts fill white narrative boxes with WW in the top left corner. Blue backwards words in white balloons with blue borders appear when a woman in a blue jacket and gloves confronts a blue-skinned siren comforting Diana. A god’s glowing white words in colored balloons offer wisdom, while small purple words in distorted balloons provide power. Sound effects enhance magical attacks, physical blows, and an offer of liberation. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

Veronica Cale knows how to pull people's strings. Her ability to force good people to hurt others threatens Diana's faith in the surface world. And when she exposes a chink in her armor, Diana stands to lose a staunch supporter in Absolute Wonder Woman #18.

Like all the best heroes, Diana's thoughts are always for other people. Yet helping others has painted a target on her back. Even when villains seek to hurt or subjugate others, Diana helps and protects them. Where will Diana's compassion lead her next? And how much danger will she brave to free someone from another’s control and oppression? Let’s pray for wisdom, leap into Absolute Wonder Woman Annual 2026 #1, and see!

Story

Diana wields the Athena blade forged by Hephaestus. The princess of Themyscira rides Pegasus and can conjure the darkest magicks. When a danger threatens that even she cannot defeat, Diana borrows another woman's plight to protect our world. But the curse, and the woman's pain and anger, overwhelm Diana. Only Steve Trevor's bravery and loyalty help Diana remember who she is and escape Medusa's curse.

So, in Absolute Wonder Woman Annual 2026 #1, Diana appeals to Athena. Thanks to emergency alerts in the Hieron, Diana can fly off to battle monsters and protect people at a moment’s notice. But when she returns, instead of recuperating from her efforts, Diana finds a quiet place and prays.

Kelly Thompson equates mythology with history in her story, reminding us that our understanding of the past comes from the victors. We hear Diana’s thoughts as she speaks with Athena and undergoes her trial. Like when she sought out Prometheus, Diana’s trial will be arduous. But this time, the stakes are higher.

Diana grew up in the underworld. Zeus stripped her of her people and her heritage. Apollo robbed her adoptive mother of the power to speak her people’s name. But Diana's heart was so full of love that she projected it at everyone she met. Even though her mind and spirit differed from theirs, Circe and the gods fell under her spell. After experiencing Medusa's anger and pain, Diana knows how those emotions have imprisoned her. So, in Absolute Wonder Woman Annual 2026 #1, Diana risks her life to free a monster, hoping Medusa will embrace a better future.

Art

Amid dramatic rescues and battles, Diana kneels and lays her face and arms upon the ground. After battling villains and monsters to rival the Tetracide amid smoke, fire, and flood, Diana ventures to the garden surrounding the Hieron. Or she ventures to a circular patio guarded by broken columns, where she kneels before an urn spilling blood onto the stone pavings. When Athena answers, yellow and white energy evokes Hecate. But when Diana meets her, Athena is resplendent in gold.

Mattia De Iulis adorns his art in Absolute Wonder Woman Annual 2026 #1 with a loaded palette of strong colors that pulse with as much vitality as Diana's heart. Red links the blood Diana sheds for others with the tattoos on her magical arm, the light that burns through her helmet eye holes, and the realm she must traverse to reach Athena. But green also forms a theme, linking the verdant plants surrounding the Hieron with the vibrance of Athena's realm, and her lasso of transmogrification with the gorgon she wishes to help.

Becca Carey uses white block letters to differentiate time and place. Uppercase black letters occupy white dialogue balloons. Diana's thoughts fill white narrative boxes with WW in the top left corner. Athena's words glow white within orange balloons, while Medusa's larger font distorts balloon borders. Sound effects enhance screeching, screaming, violent impacts, rapid air currents, and claws seeking purchase as an angry monster threatens to squeeze the life from a compassionate hero. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

Memories define us and color how we see the world. Yet everyone's recollection of the same event may differ in profound ways. While attempting to aid a soul in torment, Diana struggles to reconcile the god she knows with the stories others have collected about her in Absolute Wonder Woman Annual 2026 #1.
