Story

After sheltering behind a delivery van, Nico bangs on the double doors of a nearby building. After she turns to face her imminent demise on the sidewalk, Wanda Maximoff offers Nico a helping hand inside her Emporium. But Nico is frazzled after her flight from the flying, frying death. So, the Scarlet Witch gets Nico to settle down and explain how all the trouble started.

 

In Jeremy Whitley’s story, it’s dangerous for magic users to venture out on Halloween. So, Nico and her friend, Karolina Dean, spent the evening in Billy Kaplan and Theodore Altman’s apartment. Billy was excited by finding a game he had never seen before. The four friends wrote up their character sheets, rolled the dice, and immersed themselves in the game. But as they played, creatures from their game appeared, and Billy and Nico fled for their lives.

 

While Nico gets Strange Tales #1 rolling, Wanda Maximoff proves to be the game master. The mystical investigator forces the story to follow her as she uncovers clues. Billy bought the game for a lark. Teddy, Nico, and Karolina came along for the ride. Wanda discovers that someone laid a trap for her son and his friends. Like Sherlock Holmes, Wanda isn’t afraid to embrace danger. Nico may not be a doctor, but she proves an able sidekick as the duo brave goblins, dragons, and more. And both women wield more effective weapons than a Webley revolver or a walking stick.

 

 

 

 

Art

As Bayleigh Underwood shows an explosion rocking Midtown, Jim Campbell reveals a green-clad witch fleeing the orange storm in Strange Tales #1. White ice erupts to chill the dragon's yellow and orange breath, while a glass door reflects the flames and the gray-blue street. Then, a red wooden door with a metal knocker appears before hands emerge from a white field to capture the witch.

 

The primary characters in Strange Tales #1 reveal an impish quality that shows the joy they find in being together. Wanda Maximoff radiates confidence and assurance as she welcomes her visitor and returns to the scene of the crime. Pastels dominate Billy and Teddy’s apartment when monsters appear. But while Karolina fills the room with a rainbow swirl, the other heroes cast white magic that radiates a unique color. 

 

Joe Caramagna fills white dialogue balloons with uppercase black letters. The letters shrink for lowered voices and enlarge for raised voices. The narrator speaks ivory words into black boxes, while Wanda confronts someone who speaks white words into black balloons. Sound effects fill the pages with all the crash, bang, and boom of a multiplex cinema showing Reign Of Fire. Thanks to Marvel Comics for providing a review copy. 

 

 

 

 

Final Thoughts

Strange Tales #1 launches an involving mystery that reminds us of the addictive power of games, the importance of reading instruction manuals, and the dangers of entering thrift shops.

Story

When she looked inside Bullseye's mind, Maka saw only love. His betrayal makes her question everything. Rebuilding her life around her family helps Maka realize how much her mother has sacrificed for her. Maka's aunt and tūtū may do fine, but her mother spends most of her time working. They can’t afford an apartment in New York City. So as Maka sits in their room above the florist shop, she debates keeping the money from Starchy & Cloth. Doesn't her mom need it more than a money launderer with the morals of a potato? 

 

Investing in her family means reconnecting with her Hawaiian heritage. Maka is also forging a friendship with the girl she found hiding in the locker room at Red Snow Dojo. Caroline and Sensei Barker's other students made Beba feel small. As Maka helps Beba feel wanted and empowered, her new friend shares her heritage with Maka in Spider-Girl #3. The camaraderie helps Maka relax with someone her age. Plus, she doesn't have to worry about Beba stabbing her in the back, imbuing her with more life-changing powers, or punching her to the moon. 

 

A string of robberies provides another topic for levity on their outing. But as Maka makes the most of her mom's evenings at work to foil crime, a burglar steals luxury goods and leaves an origami figure at the scene of her crimes. Like Maka, Piper Dali is doing what she thinks is right. The Flipstergram fashionista teaches store owners to respect others. As Torunn Grønbekk places Maka in another dangerous situation, she compares Maka's new approach with her former worldview. But the Paper Doll's attacks could prove more deadly than Lady Bullseye's sword in Spider-Girl #3.

 

 

Art

André Risso reveals the energy humming inside Maka. The Hawaiian cliff diving champion tosses a ball while awaiting crimes at night. She hurries down the stairs when she overhears Beba, grabs her by the hand, and yanks her out of the florist shop. Maka thwips above the running laundry store thieves to avoid the gangsters protecting Starchy & Cloth. Then, she webs "Dim and Dumb" and hauls them to a roof. Despite all the girl’s energy, Maka sits on her bed to contemplate her options, then leaves her section of the room to sink into her mother’s arms.

 

Amid the thieves’ attire, the rooftop she drops them on, the shop windows the next day, and Lady Bullseye’s appearance, gray forms a theme in Spider-Girl #3. Even Dr Tramma’s bright green suit shows gray accents, and Detective Shari Sebbins wears a gray suit. This mixture of white and black amid the brightly colored world of New York City underlines Maka’s moral quandary. 

By comparison, Dr Tramma floods Hijack's cell with light. As Hijack rests between punishing trials, or his eyes crackle with white energy, the yellow light evokes the sun's life-giving radiance as his captor increases his mutant powers. 

 

Joe Caramagna fills Maka’s latest adventure with uppercase black letters in white dialogue balloons and shows the Hawaiian’s thoughts with red letters in white narrative boxes. The words grow bold for intonation, swell for raised voices, and rarely shrink. Yellow narrative boxes relay the narrator’s voice, while purple words in lavender balloons reveal Piper’s inner self. Lowercase black letters in white rounded boxes highlight the fleeting joys of fame. Sound effects accompany gunfire, alarms, arcing electricity, and the deadliest cut of all. Final Thoughts

When the Yakuza captured her, Bullseye inspired Maki Matsumoto to escape her captors. But Lady Bullseye knows that her lifestyle is not for everyone. After escaping a life of servitude and abuse, Lady Bullseye doesn’t want anyone to make Maka their pawn. But Maka’s unique ability to mimic others' abilities makes her an irresistible tool for villains in Spider-Girl #3.

Birds Of A Feather Part 3: Story

When Dr Sasquatch sends Miles’ therapist on a house call, Keisha Kwan counsels Misty Knight regarding Miles’ needs. Misty Knight may not know Jaime Sommers. Still, Miles’ mentor uses her bionic arm to flip through her rolodex for T’Challa’s phone number. The Black Panther brings boxes with him that Tiana Toomes dubs Sci-Fi Tupperware. But T’Challa uses the “crazy-looking metal” containers for more than storing last night’s leftovers.

 

In Miles Morales: Spider-Man #25, T’Challa realizes that Miles’ venom-energy is overworked. The more Miles uses it to attack opponents, the more Miles' vampirism tempts him to drink their blood. The Black Panther can’t offer Miles a cure to quell the forces battling inside him. But T’Challa has something he believes can help Miles regulate the surging energy. That's good because the Vulture has not forgotten how Miles trounced him atop Tiana's apartment building. The Vulture lost his son and daughter-in-law. Spider-Man took his granddaughter away from him. Well, Grandpa knows these so-called spider heroes brainwash people with their do-gooder mantras. The Vulture wants his granddaughter back. After Miles' unrestrained attack, the Vulture knows what he is up against.

 

Cody Ziglar continues to muse on the importance of self-care in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #25. It’s a battle Miles fought long before he became a vampire. And unlike the Vulture, Miles doesn't hold grudges. Perhaps that's why other heroes flock to his aid, and even former enemies, like Hightail, occasionally seek his help. But can Miles count on their help when the Vulture returns for Round Two?

 

 

 

Birds Of A Feather Part 3: Art

While Miles exhibits an elegant, refined look, the Black Panther crouches like a predatory animal. T’Challa may keep his mask on, but Miles lifts his. Still, Miles doesn't expose his pointy ears. If Brooklyn’s Spider-Man is embarrassed by his appearance, Tiana keeps her visor down as she questions Black Panther’s treatment plan. Federico Vicentini shows T’Challa slice his forearm via a reflection in Spider-Man's eye-shield. Miles rages as he struggles to resist temptation. Keisha Kwan becomes a silhouette as the therapist restrains Tiana from flying to her boyfriend's aid.

 

Red, purple, black, and white dominate as our heroes confer in Misty Knight’s blue garage. Misty’s red jacket, the red fabric of Miles’ suit, and Tiana’s red wings link the patient and his loved ones as they consult the black, white, and purple-clad doctors. Yellow energy fills orange backgrounds when Miles' venom power surges, evoking how yellow consumed the red portions of Miles' costume when he last battled Tiana's grandfather. Bryan Valenza delivers more yellow venom energy as Miles wields a sword against Black Panther in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #25. But then green dominates the pages as Federico Vicentini’s camera captures Vulture flying through the sky.

 

While Bryan Valenza lavishes vibrant colors on Federico Vicentini’s highly charged art, Cory Petit thwips black uppercase letters into white dialogue balloons. He shares Miles' thoughts with white letters in red narrative boxes and the Vulture's as black letters in green boxes. The delicate font emboldens for inflection and swells for raised voices. Energetic sound effects signal the rise of Miles’ vampirism, enliven Miles’ fight with Black Panther, and help us hear how the “crazy-looking metal” reacts to Miles’ touch. 

 

 

 

Family Bitniz: Story

In Deadpool’s absence, Ellie takes care of the family business. She nabs a money launderer, but then Spider-Man interrupts her. Miles hasn't met the pint-size Deadpool, but he's seen enough of Wade Wilson's namesakes to be on guard. Ellie geeks out at meeting a hero but realizes she represents her late father’s firm. The need to protect Task-Daddy’s beloved income stream spurs a fight between two likable young Latinos in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #25. Miles realizes that mercenaries and private detectives sometimes hunt the same quarry, and the Daughters Of The Dragon must now compete for work with Deadpool & Daughters LLC.

Ellie twirls a three-pointed star as she sits atop Norm’s back. She greets Miles with a flurry of flying knives while Spider-Man displays superior battle skills.
