At even a thought of rebellion, the King could send his dragons to incinerate you.

After imparting such essential truths of life in their previous issue, what dangers will EC Comics warn us about next? And after reading these three stories, will the knowledge gained save us from cruel twists of fate?

The soldiers who fought in the trenches of World War I called it Shellshock. A century later, it goes by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. But whether you call it Shellshock, PTSD, or Combat Stress Reaction, it's just a label. And no label can compare to the mark war leaves on soldiers. Sometimes for a few years. Sometimes, for life.

EC's new Shellshock anthology begins in the charnel house of Afghanistan. Where will it transport readers next? And how will it explore the battles veterans face at home? Let's grab our combat gear, leap into EC Shellshock #1, and see what happens!

Story

John Arcudi transports readers back a quarter century to the Shkin Firebase in Afghanistan. In “Scorched Earth,” Corporal Rita Cruces' military service is winding down. But as her friend Denny reminds her, just because she's about to go home, she should not succumb to superstition.

While Rita Cruces fears venturing into enemy territory days before her release, Michael W. Conrad transports readers back to World War I. After six months of fighting in the trenches, the higher-ups on both sides have organized a holiday truce. In "Christmas," an unnamed soldier worries about abandoning the trenches to bury his fallen soldiers. But he fears meeting the monsters he's only caught glimpses of amid the fighting.

For this third trip through time in EC Shellshock #1, Julio Anta transports readers to Langley, Virginia, in 1964. Dr Jeremy Davis’ patriotism is the guiding force of his life in “Blowback.” As he works for the CIA’s Directorate of Science and Technology, he knows that a nuclear bomb could end his life in an instant. And with the insidious threat of Communism recently infecting Cuba’s leader, Jeremy hopes to succeed where the Bay of Pigs Invasion failed.

After examining a century of Human warfare from different perspectives, Benito Cerena and Tom Fowler venture beyond this planet wracked by conflict. In “World of the Wars," many alien races have united to forge a historic pact. The assembled species recognize the intolerable cost of warfare to their people and resources. Still, recognizing that reasonable people will not always agree, the enlightened representatives propose a means of resolving their differences without damaging their worlds or incurring civilian casualties.

Finally, William M Gaines and Al Feldstein return us to the battlefields of Europe in their classic 1952 reprint, "Yellow." With the Germans encroaching on their position, Colonel Clark Henderson cannot contact Headquarters in EC Shellshock #1. But while he organizes a mission to get reinforcements, Clark learns that his son, his pride and joy, may not be living up to his ideals.

Art

In “Scorched Earth,” Shawn Martinbrough and Matt Herms surround the soldiers with the mountainous desert. A red, white, and blue flag brightens the gray mess hall, while green and yellow link the soldiers with the foreign lands. Yet in this story about the haunting nature of warfare, yellow and orange flames symbolize the toll warfare takes on its participants.

Gaunt faces, protected by steel helmets, peer over sandbags at a land of stunted and broken trees. Yet burning candles affixed to barren branches symbolize common ground. When the soldiers gather, yellow and orange compete with the dominant browns and grays as darkness falls. Yet after a soldier stares at a black-and-white photo in “Christmas,” Albert Monteys paints a soldier’s recollections in vibrant green.

On a bright, sunny day, the US flag flies beside a building and a futuristic parking lot canopy. In their laboratory, scientists use welding torches, hypodermic needles, soldering irons, and noxious chemicals to fashion weapons of surreptitious destruction. Yet in David Lapham & Nick Filardi's dark comedy "Blowback," a white-and-red creation and blue Xs on photos symbolize the protagonist’s patriotism in EC Shellshock #1.

The diversity of life that gathers at an excavated comet proclaims the eternal desire for peace. Yet, Tom Fowler’s portraits of civilization and its fragility make “World of the Wars” a heartbreaking read. As Michelle Madsen enlivens a series of regulated conflicts, yellow and orange are followed by splashes of red. Yet amid the hyperreal colors of this Hollywood Tent Pole-style production, an object covered in brown cloth becomes a symbol people cling to.

As the Colonel studies a map, his Sergeant plugs wires into a control board while listening to headphones. Michael Atiyeh’s restored coloring adorns the characters in green uniforms and brown equipment, while faded or vibrant flats highlight foreground characters and tense encounters. As in a single-location set TV show, Jack Davis cranks up the tension as the Colonel plans, waits, worries, and barks orders in his field office. When he finally abandons it in “Yellow,” his actions lead both to victory and defeat.

Lettering

Rich Starkings and Tyler Smith fill white dialogue balloons with black uppercase text, while narration fills white and colored boxes. "Christmas" and "World of the Wars" are narrative-only stories. But while one bespeaks reverence for comrades, the second emphasizes following the rules to preserve the peace. Thanks to Oni Press and Superfan Promotions for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Every action can have unintended consequences. Just as a stone thrown into a pond creates a myriad of ripples, so do the conflicts in war. Once the weapons begin firing, acts of compassion and friendship can be misinterpreted or abused. To preserve their futures, people compromise their principles in the name of peace. Yet even after the fighting stops, people pay the price for using violence to resolve conflicts in EC Shellshock #1.

Rating 9.8/10

Titan's Upcoming King Kull Series

Conan traveled back in time to fight alongside King Kull and his stalwart Pict friend Brule in Conan The Barbarian: The Age Unconquered Vol 3. Recently, Jim Zub drew King Kull back into Conan's orbit in Conan The Barbarian: Scourge of the Serpent Vol 1. But Kull didn't stop there. The indomitable King of Atlantis also made inroads into Savage Sword of Conan.

Now, King Kull is getting his own series. How will Titan's upcoming Kull series differ from the King's appearances in Conan The Barbarian and Savage Sword of Conan? And when can the new series appear in stores?

Here's all the info from Titan Comics:

WRITTEN BY JOHN ARCUDI, ILLUSTRATED AND COLOURED BY THE MULTIPLE EISNER AWARD WINNING TEAM MARK BUCKINGHAM AND DAVE STEWART

As announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 during the Conan Panel on Saturday 25th July, global publishers Titan Comics and Heroic Signatures are thrilled to announce a BRAND-NEW comic book series, based on the literary predecessor to Conan the Barbarian; Kull!

This new comic series brings on board a stellar creative team featuring multiple Eisner award winning artist Mark Buckingham (Fables, Hellblazer, Amazing Spider-Man), as well as the Eisner award winning Dave Stewart, and writer John Arcudi (The Mask, B.P.R.D., Major Bummer)

Kull Issue 1 is due hit comic shops in early 2027. Stay tuned for more updates!

Here is a map of Kull's Thurian Age:

When Titan's Chief Operating Officer, Andrew Sumner, sat down with Heroic Signatures' editor Chris Butera, Kull was one of the first characters they bonded over. Like their Conan and Solomon Kane stories, the team's first Kull miniseries will number four issues. But while they are following the same format, they wanted to give the Kull series its own unique look.

Writer John Arcudi made some of his first sales to Marvel's Savage Tales and Savage Sword of Conan. In addition to the titles Titan mentioned, John went on to work on series like Alien, Predator, Terminator, and Doom Patrol. Among artist Mark Buckingham other credits are series like Titans and Dead Boy Detectives.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Mark Buckingham said he sought inspiration for his new Kull series from Jack Kirby and Moebius. He strives for a lean, elegant delicacy in depicting Kull's Thurian Age. Mark sought to convey the high culture of this story set thousands of years before Conan's Hyborian Age, while also showing the corruption that will eventually swallow it.

Andrew Sumner is giving the new series the thumbs-up. Hopefully, readers will too!

Thanks to Titan Comics, Heroic Signatures, and San Diego Comic-Con for sharing this story with us.

Life was tough in 19th-century America. Before the United States became a nation, it was a group of rowdy states learning to get along. Then there were those roughhousing territories where people did as they pleased. What was life like back in those lawless days? Let's grab our six-shooters, leap into EC Comics' Outlaw Showdown #1, and see!

Cool, Cool Water

The sun beats down on Rand Keyes. Like every summer day in Oklahoma, it’s hot. But Rand is on the trail of train robbers, and he won't stop until he catches them. Sadly, once people start committing crimes, they lose their moral compass. When the robbers leave corpses in their wake, this only deepens the US Marshal's determination to find them. Rand's job gets tougher after finding someone in need of protection.

John Arcudi fills Cool, Cool Water with all the loneliness of the Old West. Yet he infuses it with the tensions that separated people amid a land big enough for all of them. Sebastián Cabrol ratchets up the tension and isolation with constantly changing camera angles to showcase Rand and his horse riding through this panorama.

Lee Loughridge shows the moods of the land. The habitable regions shine with yellows, greens, and browns. As grasslands turn to desert, the yellow, brown, and orange grow more luminous. A spark of yellow glows beneath a purple night sky. But Rand needs more than a campfire to ward off the Human and otherworldly dangers that haunt this new world in this first story in EC Comics’ Outlaw Showdown #1.

Fire In The Hole

Life in the Appalachian coal mines was hard. Each day, miners descended to dig their quota from the Earth. The story begins with Artie Hall looking after his friend Byron. He makes sure Byron doesn't lose his payment tokens. Then an explosion rips through the mine. Out of the working party, only Artie survives.

Tony Moore's story follows Artie's struggle to move on. His detailed art shows working conditions in the mines, the townspeople who remind him of his absent friends, and the wealth Artie amasses. Rico Renzi lends vibrant colors to this story about survivor's guilt and how panic can exacerbate a bad situation.

The Cure

Doc Boot’s black-and-gray finery suggests wealth and arcane knowledge. His tinctures and salves promise to cure diseases and relieve any ailment. Yet, as little May notes, he drives his horses harder than he needs to. May lives with Shen Li, who operates a Herbalist shop in Red Dirt, California. She and Shen Li know that their forefathers developed snake oil from snakes, while Doc Boot mixes his from a variety of ingredients. Ann Nocenti’s story reminds us of the cultures that coexisted in the Old West, even if they didn’t understand or respect each other.

In this first story in EC Comics’ Outlaw Showdown #1, David Lapham shows Doc's vanity and sense of superiority by how he treats his Native American assistant. As finely dressed townspeople welcome the man dressed like a magician, Little Bear dispenses bottles while Shen Li and May observe from afar. Nick Filardi lavishes a palette of bright and attractive colors on this story about a man who exploits others' hopes.

Pony Express

Matt Roundtree works for the Pony Express. Instead of sending letters by mail and waiting weeks or months for the wagons or trains to deliver them, Matt rides alone. He guarantees delivery of the letters secured in his saddle pouch. Like Genghis Khan’s Yam postal system, Matt’s life works by riding his horse hard to relay stations, where he gets fresh supplies and exchanges horses. Christopher Cantwell focuses on Matt’s sense of honor and fulfillment in his devotion to his sworn purpose.

While Matt muses on the issues that spark conflict in this vast territory and how his life may change in the future, Dan McDaid and Michael Atiyeh show Matt’s bond with his horses. They contribute beautiful landscapes, familiar villains and dangers, and reveal Matt as an indomitable force of nature: always the perennial visitor who can never stop.

Colt Single Action Army Revolver

This six-page tale, published in EC Comics’ Two-Fisted Tales #20, begins with Rufe loading his gun. Rufe waxes philosophical as he contemplates his power. But Harvey Kurtzman’s story isn’t about Rufe and his partner working a mine and getting rich. Instead, Jack Davis' art reveals the gun's power. Iñaki Azipiazu restores the 1952 coloring to this thoughtful, moral tale in EC Comics’ Outlaw Showdown #1.

Lettering

Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith fill white dialogue balloons and colored narrative boxes with black uppercase letters. Gunshots punctuate the day and night, explosions rock the air, and large, stylized letters introduce “Fire in the Hole.” Thanks to Oni Press for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

The first two stories in EC Comics’ Outlaw Showdown #1 showcase the horrors and mysteries in a land where the fantastic merges with reality. Then, the remaining three reveal the good, the bad, and the ugly side of life as adventurers transformed a wilderness into a nation.

Rating 9.6/10
