In 2093, Ash’s quest to reassemble the Necronomicon Ex Mortis has taken him from devastated England to the ruins of the American heartland. He’s battled Skeleton Deadites, Droidites, and even an Evil Shark. (Sadly, the latter occurred between issues). The Hologram Wiseman sent Ash back to the cabin where Ash lost his girlfriend, and the infectious evil forced him to hack off his hand. Can Ash find the final page so the wizard can send him home to work at S-Mart? What's going on in 1993 in Ash’s absence? And how about Lady Shiela? How is she faring in 1300 A.D.? Let's grab our shotguns and chainsaws, leap into Army Of Darkness Forever #6, and find out!

Story

In 1300 A.D., Ash killed his evil twin and eradicated the Deadite army. Then Lord Arthur’s wiseman gave him a potion. Ash slept in a cave, hoping to awaken in 1993. In Ash's absence, his evil twin returns. This time, without the people's champion to lead them, Evil Ash converts everyone in Lady Shiela’s life. How do you react when you lose everything and everyone you care about? In Army Of Darkness Forever #6, Lady Shiela vows to go down fighting.

As in Sam Raimi’s movie, Ash returned to S-Mart in 1993. Yet he's not quite himself. Ash thinks murderous thoughts. When he looks into a mirror, he sees Evil Ash from 1300. Lookalike Ash kills a customer who wants a chili dog and devotes his attention to learning about computers and the internet. He repeats history when he breaks a mirror, allowing a horde of miniature evil twins to cause havoc. The police bring Ash down to the precinct for questioning, but they don’t reckon with his little friends.

In 2093, Ash returns from the basement of the destroyed cabin with the final page of the Necronomicon. Ash flubbed the incantations before, but he’s memorized the words now. Ash grabs all the pages and thrusts them up before the wizard. But in his haste to escape the ruined future, Ash doesn’t wait for the wizard to reassemble the Necronomicon before he utters the incantation.

In Army Of Darkness Forever #6, Lady Shiela follows Ash’s example. In 1993, evil Lookalike Ash uses his diminutive doubles to perpetrate his plan. In 2093, the Real American Hero Ash discovers that, once again, he’s flubbed up. Tony Fleecs’ story channels the manic wackiness of Sam Raimi’s movie to interlink stories in three time periods. Will Lady Shiela prove as effective as Ash? Has Lookalike Ash completed or just begun his mission in 1993? The results of Ash's mistake in 2093 especially intrigue.

Still, things could be worse. Ash could be a street vendor of pizza balls who can't stop slapping his face on an alternate Earth!

Insect droids peer down the stairs in 2093, awaiting their master’s return. Ash emerges from the basement—all that survived of the cabin—splattered with blood. Overwhelmed with reminders of Yesterday, Ash can't face the wizard as he thrusts out the final page. Yet when Ash braves a look, Lord Arthur's wizard has turned away.

Lady Shiela confronts Deadite Lord Arthur in 1300. Spying the hovering Necronomicon, she grabs it and leaps out of the upper story room. Deadites fill the castle yard. She backs away from the people she loves, who now resemble corpses. Grabbing a horse’s reins, her words to the horse reflect her desperation. The horse looks at her, snarles, and speaks.

Ash’s Evil Lookalike leans back in his chair in the interview room. One detective places gruesome Polaroids of corpses found in S-Mart on the table. Lookalike Ash looks bored, casually turns to the two-way mirror, and sees his 1300 undead version staring back at him. Nearby, the Miniature Ashes smile as they turn up the heat in Army Of Darkness Forever #6.

Brad Simpson applies a limited color scheme to Justin Greenwood’s quirky, edgy, and yet endearing 2093 art that heavily favors blues, reds, and browns. Interview scenes focus on gray and beige with hints of green, while the Miniatures' mischief turns everything yellow, orange, and red. Simpson's palette for the 1300 A.D. scenes offers the most color options, with scenes ranging from between night and day, inside buildings, caves, and tents, and beneath the sun and the stars.

Troy Peteri casts large black uppercase letters into white and colored dialogue balloons and narrative boxes in Army Of Darkness Forever #6. Words grow bold for inflection and enlarge or shrink to convey volume. Sound effects help us hear Ash's exhaustion and the Miniature Minions’ mayhem and feel Ash’s distaste for his most personal battle yet.

Final Thoughts

While Lady Shield fights to reclaim her kingdom in 1300 A.D. and Lookalike Ash hatches his evil plan in 1993, Ash’s impatience in 2093 could doom our world for all time in Army Of Darkness Forever #6.

Army Of Darkness Forever #4 Review

Writer: Tony Fleecs

Artist: Justin Greenwood

Colorist: Brad Simpson

Letterer: Troy Peteri

Cover Artists: Francesco Mattina, Arthur Suydam, Tony Fleecs & Nick Dragotta

Publisher: Dynamite Comics

Price: $3.99

Release Date: January 17, 2023

Trapped in 2093, Ash must track down the scattered pages of the Necronomicon Ex Mortis. In 1993, Evil Ash must confront his thirst for violence and the complexities of the internet. In 1300, Lady Shiela must warn her people of another Deadite uprising. What unites all three time zones, and will heroes in any of them win a happy ending? Let's leap into Army Of Darkness Forever #4 and find out!

Story

In the Army Of Darkness Movie Adaptation (written by Sam and Ivan Raimi and published by Dynamite Comics), Ash drank a potion and awoke in 2093. Civilization lies in ruins. In Army Of Darkness Forever #4, Ash’s only hope of returning to 1993 is the Necronomicon Ex Mortis. But before he can recite the incantation, Ash must reassemble the book! Finding the scattered pages may prove more difficult than locating an item wrongly cataloged in the S-Mart storeroom! Thankfully, Ash has handy robots and Lord Arthur’s holographic wizard to aid him on his quest.

The wizard proves far more than a recording. He guides Ash on his quest, helps upgrade his firepower, and even compliments Ash on his stylish new haircut. Tony Fleecs pays homage to the patron saint of Time Travel stories with Ash's mention of Morlocks. In keeping with the film's zany mix of horror, comedy, and romance, he puts a humorous spin on H. G. Wells's classic tale.

After devoting half of Army Of Darkness Forever #4 to the future, Fleecs splits the remainder between 1993 and 1300. Before Evil Ash can pave the way for a robot apocalypse, he must master the complexities of newsgroups, Netscape Navigator, and electronic mail. Couldn't he just go on a murder rampage instead? It's interesting to think of evil people battling their natures to achieve a goal. But then, focusing on one's goals doesn't make a person virtuous.

In 1300, Lady Shiela failed to convince Lord Arthur she knew what she was talking about. His wizard proves more amenable. But as they ride out to the woods, he suggests she imagined the Deadites and reminds her that she's not their champion. They've survived an extraordinary, supernatural battle. Why would Arthur’s wiseman doubt her veracity?

Art

Instead of Deadites, future Ash battles Droidites. They resemble the dead that rose from their graves in 1300. Yet they're made of metal and circuitry. The robots assisting Ash evoke insects or his metal hand. Yet one projects a beam of light the holographic wiseman inhabits. Ash may be missing his Remington, but a quick buzz cut from his chainsaw helps differentiate him from the wizard. In Army Of Darkness Forever #4, Justin Greenwood delivers a cracking underworld adventure that protects the Morlocks’ decency, highlights 90s posters of videotape aerobic stars and a trilling Trout, and suggests that the wise man has lost his respect for Lady Shiela.

Ash fights against purple skies at night, while day turns the air blood-orange. Brad Simpson applies a different palette to each section and varies coloring by day and night. He shows highlighting and shading and applies texturing to his colors. He even captures streaks of light reflected off opaque glass and a mirror. Better be careful, Evil Ash! You remember what Agatha Christie said about mirrors that get cracked from side to side!

Troy Peteri conjures large black uppercase letters into white dialogue balloons. The placement of narrative boxes and dialogue balloons is always easy to follow. I especially enjoyed how the ballons arc around Evil Ash and his coworker Ted in 1993. The bug robots' smaller replies scurry inside green boxes. Numbers invade words, forcing the reader to translate the alphanumeric utterances. Sound effects help us hear Ash’s buzzcut, moaning Morlocks, and a squealing modem while a falling horse leaves Army Of Darkness Forever #4 on a chilling note. Thanks to Dynamite Comics for providing a copy for review.

Final Thoughts

Ash rediscovers the joy of living, his evil self struggles to master his baser impulses, and Lady Shiela battles sexism in Army Of Darkness Forever #4.

Army Of Darkness Forever #3 Review

Writer: Tony Fleecs

Artist: Justin Greenwood

Colorist: Brad Simpson

Letterer: Troy Peteri

Cover Artists: Francesco Mattina, Arthur Suydam, Tony Fleecs & Nick Dragotta

Publisher: Dynamite Comics

Price: $3.99

Release Date: December 27, 2023

Lady Sheila discovers Ash Williams didn’t banish the Evil Dead in 1300 A.D. Evil Ash replaced him at S-Mart in 1993. Ash battles evil robots in 2093! How did all this happen, and what links the three time periods? Let's leap into Army Of Darkness Forever #3 and find out!

Story

In 1300, Ash united warring factions to drive away the Deadites. But he didn’t destroy them all. When Lady Sheila senses their presence, she rides into the haunted forest to investigate. She discovers the Army Of Darkness rebuilding its strength. But can she escape and warn her people?

Sure, Ash recited the incantation like Lord Arthur's wizard taught him. Okay, maybe he didn't say every tiny syllable. Still, it was close enough, right? Wrong! Now Evil Ash works in Housewares at S-Mart. If a few customers go missing, who’s going to complain?

In the Army Of Darkness Director’s Cut, Ash drank a potion. He was supposed to awaken in 1993. Instead, Ash overslept. Hey, what's an extra century, right? Unfortunately, his dead ringer at S-Mart found a way to spread his evil worldwide. Thus, Ash awoke to a Robot Apocalypse!

In Army Of Darkness Forever #3, Sheila escapes the Deadites thanks to Henry The Red. But the old divisions remain. Without Ash to lead the Humans, who will unite the rival factions? In 1993, Evil Ash fights his urges to slay everyone who ventures into the store. Evil Ash has a plan but needs time to complete his preparations. A century later, tiny robots surround Ash. Via a hologram, Lord Arthur's wise man says the Necronomicon is Ash's only hope to return to his own time. But before he can recite the time-travel incantation, Ash must retrieve the book. That may prove more difficult than last time.

Army Of Darkness Forever #3 speaks to the realities of life in the Middle Ages. It reminds readers of the age when Big Hair Bands ruled the airwaves and digital comics came on compact discs. It thrives on fears about artificial intelligence that seem more probable now than thirty years ago. Most importantly, Tony Fleecs's exhilarating story channels the wacky fun of the cult classic film.

Art

Justin Greenwood imbues characters with verve and personality. Their zany appearance matches the insane humor of Sam Raimi's movie. Deadites fly after Lady Shiela on batwings. Armored knights slash through skulls. Evil Ash waits on customers returning unwanted items while daydreaming of slaughtering them. Bearded Ash watches a hand-sized six-limbed droid project the wizard’s face in a stream of light until an enemy emerges from a sea of destruction.

Brad Simpson applies a full palette of bright, appealing colors to pages in Army Of Darkness Forever #3. Blues and purples fill night skies, and red backgrounds energize closeups. Gray shades Ash's ruined future as a burnt orange sky contrasts with a turquoise hologram. Light blue dominates S-Mart scenes, with Evil Ash’s shirt matching backgrounds. Red plays a secondary role until Bad Ash's daydreams begin!

Troy Peteri conjures large black uppercase letters into white dialogue balloons. The wizard speaks via blue dialogue balloons and narrative boxes. Bug Droid announcements appear as red uppercase words in yellow boxes. Sound effects enliven the action, whether a character slaps someone’s face or a chainsaw sunders flesh and bone.

Final Thoughts

One-time allies don’t make long-term friends, the accessibility of the home computer makes apocalypse possible, and an antihero must do something he hates to save the world in Army Of Darkness Forever #3.

Rating 9.4/10
