Story

The Spectre was tearing New York apart. Whenever it bonded with a Human host, it set out to judge anyone within reach. Yet in Yolanda Montez, aka Wildcat, the Spectre finds a more willing partner. Unlike her JSA teammates, the Spectre doesn’t overpower her. Instead, Yolanda uses the Spectre’s abilities to leave New York behind and travel to Belle Reve Prison.

 

As JSA #22 follows Yolanda's search for vengeance, Metron transports Stargirl, Jakeem Thunder, Dr Fate, and Kid Eternity to Gotham City. While Yolanda walks past the cells, searching for her first victim, Dr Fate and his friends search for Jim Corrigan in the moments before his death. Yet all is not as it appears in 1940. Nor is acting as judge, jury, and executioner a simple thing.

 

As members of the JSA search for missing teammates in the past and present, Dr Fate and his friends confront the reality of who the Spectre is, and what bonding with it involves. But the clock is ticking. While the kids deduce clues and search Gotham for Jim Corrigan, the Spectre continues its quest for a partner. And if it cannot find a hero to bond with, it'll choose someone else driven to wield its power in JSA #22.

 

Art

When Yolanda walks down empty halls lined with iron bars, Ruby Sokov watches her pass. Yolanda's costume betrays her fusion with the Spectre. When she reaches the cell of a woman she believes deserves her anger, Yolanda incinerates the metal bars between them. Then, she raises Queen Kobra by the neck with one hand. Jade, Obsidian, Hourman, Sandy, Jay Garrick, and Alan Scott follow Yolanda inside the cell. All of them have struggled with loss in the JSA. Yet Alan, who brought Ruby Sokov into the team, stands directly behind Yolanda.

 

While Luis Guerrero adorns Diego Olortegui’s art with a vibrant palette, the green Spectre’s determination clashes with the orange-suited inmates who sought more than they had. In 1940’s Gotham, Jakeem Thunder’s green clothes and Dr Fate’s gold find echoes in the street behind them. When Dr Fate summons a yellow light, the young heroes’ appearances change in JSA #22. Violet brings happiness and helpfulness, while the blue glow around Kid Eternity links her with Obsidian. Yet despite her hope of recovering her memories, the red lenses of her glasses link Kid Eternity with the red wine of someone who has lost everything that once defined them.

 

Black uppercase words in white balloons grow bold for intonation and swell with volume, while Kid Eternity speaks blue words. The Spectre’s words fill green balloons with serrated edges. Final Thoughts

The Justice Society of America has a long and prestigious history. Most of its members have strong reasons to be there. While many have joined because of family, friendships, or mentors, others have walked away because those relationships no longer met their needs. Yet one member is an outsider. Kid Eternity joined the JSA without any sense of who she was or where she came from. Her search for Jim Corrigan has unearthed one remnant of her past. But to learn more, she must leave her new friends in JSA #22.

Matt Kindt & Brian Hurtt's Fort Psycho

 

Matt Kindt has the best job ever. He spends his days and nights making comics. He writes, draws, and occasionally hand-letters his comics. For his latest series, he's teaming up with artist Brian Hurtt to tell a story about former soldiers branded as war criminals. After spending their careers fighting in wars, the shunned soldiers must discover who they are without a gun in their hands.

 

Matt Kindt and Brian Hurtt came up with the series title. Then they asked, "What does Fort Psycho mean?" As GI Joe fans, the two creators took their cues from Larry Hama's comic series to create an index of characters. While they assembled a list of a hundred or more characters, Matt and Brian fleshed out the soldiers' backstories. 

 

 

 

The two creators have been sharing not just a studio, but also bouncing ideas off each other for decades. Brian Hurt likes to draw action. He describes his creative style as “Organized chaos.” So Matt Kindt tells him what he needs to happen on each page, and leaves Brian to decide how to visualize it. Inevitably, Brian adds panels to each page to enhance the action and fun factor.

 

 

 

Fort Psycho finally gives the two friends a chance to work together. As they finish each page, Matt and Brian send them off to their colorist. They wanted a special palette of colors to create their Psychovision. This necessitates Oni Press working directly with the printers to achieve the desired color tones. Matt also specifies which types of paper the printer uses to ensure each book offers a fun reading experience and becomes a physical artifact readers will treasure. Then, Flux House and Oni Press go the extra mile by offering fun promotions, such as their Comic In A Can variant cover.

Story

As Loop Hughes waits for his son’s funeral, he listens to the podcasters muse about the hidden forces that shape society. Then Janelle tells him it’s time to go. She may not have stuck around to see Tiz grow up. Still, she’s holding Loop’s hand as they ride in the limo to the funeral.

 

While 100 Bullets: The US of Anger #2 follows the funeral procession, it also looks in on Mr Henry’s world. It’s a world he cares about and wishes to protect. So, he rallies his fellow patriots and gives them their marching orders. But after his son excelled himself last night in feeding the violence swirling through the ghetto, he wants Manson well out of the picture during the funeral.

 

Despite their differences, Loop Hughes and Mr Henry share a desire to protect their communities. Both view the other’s community as unworthy of inclusion in society. Yet in Brian Azzarello's story, Loop and Mr Henry intend to send a message. Tiz's funeral marks a ceasefire in their war for the soul of America. Yet as their forces converge, a wildcard lurks in their midst. And as Lono has already declared, he intends to start a war in 100 Bullets: The US of Anger #2.

 

Art

Loop lies on his son’s single bed. Symbols of the American flag adorn a pennant, a model rocket, and a sports sticker. While Janelle sits beside him on the bed, a family photo rests on Tiz’s desk. As Mr Henry awakens his son and girlfriend, stars and national symbols adorn the room and Manson’s skin. Yet a Confederate flag hangs above the bed. While Darius slinks along the street in his hoodie, Darius watches him from the driver’s seat of the van. In the back, Officer George sits with her uniform unbuttoned. Blood splatter adorns her puffy face, chest, and clothes.

 

Eduardo Risso’s Black-and-White art presents a harsh view of the world in 100 Bullets: The US of Anger #2. Shading, dots, and crosshatching have no place in this world of contrary but uncompromising forces. Black frames pages, while silhouettes intrude in scenes. But scenes often tilt in the rectangular boxes, representing how Loop Hughes, Mr Henry, and Lono view the world from different angles. Still, red splashes across the page when one protestor’s sign proves unexpectedly prophetic.

 

Clem Robins fills white balloons with black words that grow bold with intonation and swell for raised voices. Off-camera dialogue fills white boxes and often bleeds over to introduce the next scene. Colored balloons portray curiosity and a moment of softness in an ordinarily hard character. Sound effects enhance a reprimand and a signal of shifting alliances amid a tense standoff. Final Thoughts

Loop Hughes and Mr Henry want to safeguard their communities. They believe they see the world clearly, and others value their leadership. Yet neither of them can keep their family together. Their isolationist views are a weakness Lono intends to exploit in 100 Bullets: The US of Anger #2.

Story

After some lethal hijinks, Tank Girl and Booga arrive in the village. After obtaining directions, she arrives at her grandparents' home. While she finds her grandmother ill, her grandfather insists on taking her and Booga out for the evening. Her cousin, who was traumatized by his parents and 1970s British TV, accompanies them. While Tank Girl and her grandpa reconnect over drinks, her cousin and Booga find their groove by playing music together.

 

Although her grandfather has soft-soaped the situation, Tank Girl discovers that her grandmother is dying. There is only one possible cure. But to find it, she must set off on a journey across England in Tank Girl: Summer Love Sensation #1. Thankfully, a nearby museum has a tank available for rental.

 

As Alan Martin’s story follows Tank Girl’s journey across her ancestral homeland, he shares her thoughts and feelings about the island’s countryside. Along the way, strangers become friends, obstacles must be overcome, and she forms a deeper connection with England. Like H.G. Wells' early novel, The Wheels of Chance, the journey presents new opportunities for her future. Yet as Tank Girl undertakes this mission of mercy, she must balance selflessness with doing what's right for her in Tank Girl: Summer Love Sensation #1.

 

Art

As Tank Girl sits beneath a blazing sun beside her stuffed animal-backpack, Booga arrives wearing a hat and a shirt adorned with flowers. A sideways cap adorned with The Problem Solver allows the ponytail atop her otherwise bald head to spill out. As they hitchhike along a country lane, the travelers spot a sweet American ride. When they reach the English village, Tank Girl makes a shopkeeper cry as she questions her before a counter filled with Beans Very Nice. Later, an insect with a demonic face and long ears flies past as Tank Girl walks through a flower field drinking Ginger Beer.

 

Jamie Hewlett and Sofie Dodgson lavish vibrant colors on the hand-drawn art in Tank Girl: Summer Love Sensation #1. At times, Tank Girl's skin glows red, linking her with her backpack and evoking her home in the Australian Outback. Booga’s green shirt seems more at home in the verdant countryside. Purple descends upon her grandparents' property as she arrives, evoking the hat that reminds Tank Girl of Penelope Keith in “To The Manor Born.” Yet her orange shirt links her with her traumatized cousin, who wears a sack over his head.

 

Uppercase black letters fill dialogue balloons and boxes, as Tank Girl interacts with characters while narrating her adventure. Music notes fill the air as her cousin and Booga demonstrate their musicianship, while handwritten letters swell for volume or shrink to fit. Sound effects enhance revving engines, gunfire, and a riotous crowd that recalls Jake and Elwood's concert at Bob's Country Bunker. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.

 

Final Thoughts

Tank Girl may have a short fuse when it comes to rudeness and intolerance. Still, her visit to England infuses her with whimsy. As the soul of the country speaks to Tank Girl, her thoughts wax poetic. Still, her frequent celebrity name-drops remind readers of her love for pop culture in Tank Girl: Summer Love Sensation #1.
