Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #121 Review

Colorist: Matt Herms

Letterer: Ed Dukeshire

Cover Artist: Taurin Clarke; Björn Barends; Mona Finden; Goñi Montes; Mateus Manhanini; John Giang

Release Date: May 26, 2024

Billy Cranston can't sleep. Dark Specter's infection hasn't reached him yet, but it's only a matter of time. Soon, the shield protecting Earth will fail. Can he find a way to defend Earth and repel the corruption that has swept through the Morphin Grid? Or will he go crazy from lack of sleep? Let’s leap into Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #121 and find out!

Story

Grace Sterling died, but her influence lives on. She haunts Billy’s rare hours of sleep and stays beside him as he works. He still admires her, even if others don't. This morning is no different. She accompanies him as he meets Dr Kendall Morgan and the Phantom Ranger. The two wrack their brains for ways to prevent the shield protecting Earth from failing. Their latest proposals hold no more promise than all the rest. Truisms like "We'll get through this" are comforting. Yet the Solar Rangers foiled their most promising proposal by severing access to the Void. No one considers curing the Morphin Grid anymore. Their best ideas can protect Earth for a few more days. But eventually, the infection corrupting all other areas of the Grid will break through the shield and overtake Earth.

Billy isn’t usually so pessimistic. Dr Morgan sees how stress and insomnia affect Billy in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #121. She suggests he take a break and clear his mind. Aisha cleansed Rocky and Adam, so Billy visits them. Dark Specter's infection is gone, but they're reeling from feelings of violation and haunted by what they did under his influence. Perhaps someone like Tommy, who also fell victim to Dark Specter and found his way back to them, can help. But Billy can't understand what they went through.

Everyone else casts the battle with Dark Specter's infection as good combating evil. Their history teaches them that good must triumph. Yet Death waits at Earth’s door, and no one can prevent it from opening. So Billy visits Kiya. The discredited ranger regards him from behind the energy bars of her cell. “You’re coming to me?” her expression says. “You must be desperate.” Billy wasn’t ready to contemplate her radical approach to curing the Morphin Grid when she unplugged one of the Power Eggs. But in Melissa Flores’ story, Billy has tried every conceivable remedy to heal the infection. Billy asks her to run her reasoning by him again. In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #121, Billy is finally willing to listen to the woman who killed Lord Drakkon and tried to blow up the Morphin Grid.

Thank goodness Billy's not infected by Dark Specter's infection!

Art

An inset panel magnifies the bedside clock as Billy turns off the alarm. His untamed hair and drawn expression suggest rapid aging. The cracked eggs project sparks instead of a pillar of light before the damaged arch. Rocky throws up a hand at Billy. Panic etched into his features, his muscles poised to run away. Kiya's arms uncross and fall to her sides as she speaks. Billy's takeaways from their conversation dot a double-page spread showing a villain's efforts to become a god.

Matt Herms lavishes a loaded palette on Hendry Prasetya’s art in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #121. Grace Stirling appears in red. Even her white slacks hint at red. Red energy bars protect Billy from Kiya's influence. Yet her story leads Billy to Jason, who exercises in a red tank top. Grace’s red ghost counsels Billy as he sits on a black iron bench. The brownish-yellow air obscures the distant green trees while Billy gazes at the sky. The pink and green aurora are beautiful, even amid the foul haze. Yet they remind Billy that the shield protecting Earth is weakening and destined to fail. Think, Billy! What does the color red signify?

Black and red uppercase lettering inhabits white dialogue balloons, while Billy’s thoughts appear in blue narrative boxes. Ed Dukeshire’s letter size, line spacing, and contrast between print and backgrounds make Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #121 easy to read. The surging electricity he provokes may shatter readers' perception of Billy in Melissa Flores’ story. Thanks to Boom! Studios for providing a copy for review.

Final Thoughts

Driven by insomnia and desperation, Billy Cranston takes a leaf out of Dr Gregory House’s book, stops listening to his friends' treatment options, and contemplates a dangerous cure for Dark Specter’s infection in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #121.

Spider-Woman #8 Review

Writer: Steve Foxe

Artist: Ig Guara

Colorist: Arif Prianto

Letterer: Joe Sabino

Cover Artists: Leinil Francis Yu & Sunny Gho; Mark Bagley & Rachelle Rosenberg

Publisher: Marvel

Price: $3.99

Release Date: June 19, 2024

Jessica Drew discovered a worthy cause in preventing Echidna Capital Management from gobbling up low-income housing in San Francisco. She reconnected with an old flame, fought the livewire Zzzax, and met a team of young superheroes. Who is The Assembly, and can Jessica trust them? Let’s recharge our bioelectric batteries, leap into Spider-Woman #8, and see!

Story

David Ishima was once her landlord. He dated her until he discovered she was Spider-Woman. He has since sold his apartment building to fund the Relaunch Recovery Center and cares for his two daughters. David has enjoyed helping poor residents get back on their feet. Unfortunately, his property lies in the area Echidna wants for their corporate campus.

HYDRA brainwashed her son, Gerry, and turned him into the villain Green Mamba. Jessica wants to know more about these teen superheroes employed by a HYDRA shell company. She investigates online but can’t uncover personal information predating The Assembly's press launch. Jessica calls David and picks his brains over coffee. As a local, David discovered them when Quicksand hurled a sandstorm at San Francisco. The Assembly stopped her, but residents had to clean up the mess.

Maybe the kids weren't interested in social media before their powers manifested. Like David, perhaps their parents didn't allow them on social media. Still, Jessica can't shake the feeling that Echidna crafted the kids' backstories, and the group was in the works before Quicksand's attack. Then she learns of a disturbance at an Echidna construction site, bids David goodbye, and hurries off to help in Spider-Woman #8.

While politicians often promise to look after the economically challenged, they can find it difficult to turn down big-money redevelopment projects. In Steve Foxe’s story, Jessica discovers angry Angar arguing with Echidna security guards outside a construction project. The guards claim the corporation purchased the city park legally, and any people living inside the property are squatters. Thankfully, Jessica is immune to Angar’s powers because the Screamer can shatter eardrums and cause hallucinations. Jessica wants to defuse the situation, but like those at the protest where she met David, Angar and the guards are tired of talking. Thankfully, the Assembly is never far away when superpowered people threaten Echidna's property. The kids respect Spider-Woman's accomplishments. But they're young, on Echidna's payroll, and know the best way of tackling violent confrontations.

Art

As David opts for a soda over coffee in Spider-Woman #8, Jessica shows him news reports and photographs of The Assembly members as children. The press photos show the kids’ moment of activation or demonstrating their powers afterward. Echidna guards in black uniforms, armor, and stormtrooper helmets shake their batons. Red-haired Angar, displaying a blue vest, gold pants to match his armbands and amulet, and a handlebar mustache that won’t quit, projects orange rings of power when his mouth opens wide. Spider-Woman raises her hands as the guards point their rifles at her. Then she grabs the rifles by their barrels, and the guards tumble as she wrenches them from their hands.

Arif Prianto lavishes a loaded palette of attractive colors on Ig Guara’s art. The Assembly burst from a purple vortex, green-skinned Titan leading the charge with his gloved fist first. Jessica’s red and yellow uniform forges a connection with Angar’s red hair, gold adornments, and yellow pants. Cadet Marvel sends him somersaulting as a sunburst of yellow and orange rays fills the air in Spider-Woman #8. Angar’s blue boots stand out from the bowled-over gray fencing, gray-blue construction, and smoky blue sky. Liberty's red hair and blue suit connect her with Spider-Woman's red mask and her dark hair's blue sheen. But Titan crouching in his blue and gray armor beside a seated guard (whose uniform looks similarly colored from this perspective) and cupping the helmet with his giant green fingers reminds readers that HYDRA owns Echidna.

Yellow uppercase letters fill red narrative boxes as Joe Sabino shares Jessica’s thoughts. Large black uppercase letters in white dialogue balloons grow bold for inflection and shrink for lowered voices. A bing announces a news alert, a crunch follows a yellow boot pinning down a gray-gloved hand, and yellow-white letters help us hear electricity strike the ground in Spider-Woman #8. Thanks to Marvel Comics for providing a copy for review.

Final Thoughts

Jessica Drew becomes a fish out of water on her return to San Francisco as she tackles corporate greed, homelessness, and the ethics of Heroes For Hire in Spider-Woman #8.

Jackpot And Black Cat #4 Review

Writer: Celeste Bronfman

Artists: Emilio Laiso

Colorist: Brian Reber

Letterer: Ariana Maher

Cover Artists: Phil Noto, Betsy Cola & Skottie Young

Publisher: Marvel

Price: $3.99

Release Date: June 26, 2024

Mary Jane and Paul boarded a streetcar named Detention. When their captors realized MJ and Paul weren't into bondage, Mary Jane transformed into Jackpot to battle assailants on a train. Paul and Mary Jane slipped through the doors at the next stop, but instead of finding hardware, children’s ware, and ladies’ lingerie, they see Tracer, Squid, Rocket Racer & Black Cat. Will Black Cat defend her friends against her lover’s hitmen? Or are Mary Jane and Paul going down? Let’s spin our fruit machine reels, extend our claws, leap into Jackpot And Black Cat #4, and find out!

Story

Amelia Morrow worked in a pressure cooker business environment. Her boss denied her credit and a bonus for developing a popular phone app, so Amelia stopped playing by the rules. She stole the source code and developed Obscura. Amelia used her new app to blackmail people into trying to kill her former boss. Since then, she used Obscura to force Mary Jane to steal bank codes so she could rob the Owl and frame her old boss for the theft.

Black Cat adores Amelia. But Amelia prizes money and success over others. Felicia’s girlfriend has endangered Mary Jane's life before. So in Jackpot And Black Cat #4, Black Cat takes no chances. She rushes to Mary Jane and Paul's aid and helps Jackpot give the Z-List villains an early night. Black Cat may be a loner, but no one likes being alone all the time. Mary Janes helps Felicia understand that Amelia's recent corporate experiences have warped her into someone incapable of being a caring and committed life partner.

In Celeste Bronfman’s story, Mary Jane encourages Black Cat to think more highly of herself. She also allows Mary Jane to explore her powers. After the way Madame Masque enslaved Leland Owlsley during the gang war, the Owl is anxious to assert his status as a crime boss by sinking his claws into Amelia and Black Cat. But Bronfman also lets Paul show why he's Jackpot's Man In The Chair.

Art

Emilio Laiso delivers a bevy of high-flying action as Jackpot and Black Cat dispatch Tracer, Squid, and a wannabee member of Griff's hoverboard gang while Paul cowers behind two pillars. The lovely ladies talk in an alley, where people have plastered faded posters over a roll-up door. An owl sculpture sits unperturbed as the Owl rises from his wooden throne. The tablet on his desk displays black cat wallpaper. Yet the real fun comes when Mary Jane evokes a scene from the favorite movie of a long-time Spidey scribe and Miles Morales’ cocreator.

Brian Reber lavishes a loaded palette on Laiso’s exciting action sequences, guarded conversations, and heart-to-heart confrontations. Abundant use of white highlights the sheen of Black Cat's costume, the circuitry running through Amelia's jacket, and the power Jackpot wields. Her armbands also turn green and turquoise when battling the green-suited Owl and his men in black. But a lasting impression from Reber’s work in Jackpot And Black Cat #4 is how the power Jackpot wields through her golden armbands and her shiny red and gold suit recalls another popular Marvel superhero. Let's hope Mary Jane's fondness for champagne breakfasts and her children's vanishing act doesn't incite a drinking problem.

Ariana Maher spins black uppercase dialogue into white balloons and orange narrative boxes in Jackpot And Black Cat #4. Raised voices enlarge letters and contort balloons. Sound effects heighten intense fight scenes, a vehicle skidding off the road, and Jackpot damaging New York City property.

Final Thoughts

Smartphones rule our lives. In addition to providing news, weather, and sports, they are our music and entertainment portals, connect us with others, and tempt us to do things we might not otherwise attempt. In Jackpot And Black Cat #4, Paul pits his technical expertise against the avaricious Amelia and aids Mary Jane and Felicia by finding someone who resists the almighty allure of smartphones.

Universal Monsters: Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives #3 Review

Writers: Dan Watters & Ram V

Artist: Matthew Roberts

Colorist: Trish Mulvihill

Letterer: DC Hopkins

Cover Artists: Matthew Roberts & Dave Stewart; Julian Totino-Tedesco; Dani & Brad Simpson; Anwita Citriya; David Talaski

Publisher: Image

Price: $4.99

Release Date: June 26, 2024

Darwin Collier tried to kill Kate Marsden. Haunted by her brush with death, the journalist pursued the former Marine from her home in the United States to a remote village in Peru. Kate reports on what she can prove. So when fishermen pull drowning victims from the Amazon, Kate dismisses talk of a local legend. Likewise, she ignores the carved wooden images of the Creature in a vendor's stall. But then the Creature saves her from drowning. When Kate ventures into the jungle to apprehend Collier, the Creature saves her again. Or at least, so she remembers. What drives Kate and those involved in her quest? Let's grab our knives and rifles, leap into Universal Monsters: Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives #3, and find out!

Story

Collier victimized Kate. He tried to drown her in the Hudson River. She told herself she wanted justice. But the stark reality of life in the jungle leaves its mark on her. Now, she doesn't care about dragging Collier back to the United States and testifying against him in court. She just wants to kill him. The Creature may have helped her. But in Universal Monsters: Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives #3, Kate's through being a victim. She's willing to become a monster to kill another. If the Creature can help her accomplish that, all the better!

The Creature victimized Dr Edwin Thompson. One swipe of its claws left Edwin disfigured. For thirty years, he’s endured people’s reactions to his appearance. The severed nerves in Edwin's face impinge on his sleep. So he fled civilization and took up the cause of his friend Dr Carl Maia. But if his mission is to understand how life evolved from the ocean to land, why is he fixated on this Creature?

Civilization victimized Christiano’s family. When they fell on the wrong side of the political jungle, his family fled the We’re Right And The Other Party Is Wrong crowd to live with the indigenous people of Peru. Like the fires that rise when loggers cut down trees and burn foliage to create grazing land, malaria burned through Christiano in his youth. He may not have a wooden idol of the Creature in his room at Dr Edwin Thompson's house, but he revels in the mysterious nature of the jungle and reveres the Creature as its guardian spirit.

Civilization victimized Darwin Collier. The Marine Corps unleashed an unquenchable thirst for violence. When they threw him out, he couldn’t adjust to civilian life. After Collier fled the United States to share his Marine Corps skills with others, his drug trafficking employers abandoned him when his hunger for death resurfaced. As he hides from civilization and those who wish to kill him, Collier finds a new purpose in Universal Monsters: Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives #3.

Art

Kate swims in the river near Edwin's home. She doesn't know how much of what she's seen is real or imagined. The ripples in the water evoke the Creature's green, scaly hide. Yet the netting Christiano laid on the ground galvanizes her. She slices off a portion and hurls it onto Edwin’s desk. That evening, as Kate sits on the roof and watches the flames leaping above the trees, Christiano’s gaze drifts to her cigarette and the fire ravaging the packed tobacco. As Kate and Christiano share their near-death experiences, faces dance with skulls in the raging flames.

Trish Mulvihill lavishes a loaded palette on Matthew Roberts' relatable characters, drama-fueled encounters, and the explosive finale in Universal Monsters: Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives #3. Light spears the muggy jungle, casting leafy shadows upon Kate’s head and shoulders. The vibrant green forest contrasts with the calming beige and tan in Edwin’s home. Still, he tames the Creature by sketching it in black and white. The yellow and orange fires reflect off rivers and streams while orange and mauve spirits invade the purple skies.

DC Hopkins carves uppercase black letters into white dialogue balloons and colored narrative boxes. The font grows bold for intonation, swells for elevated voices, and never shrinks. Sound effects help us hear a knife thrust and a gunshot. Yet an enlarged final sentence may shock readers most in Universal Monsters: Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives #3. Thanks to Universal Studios, Skybound, and Image Comics for providing a copy for review.

Final Thoughts

In Universal Monsters: Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives #3, Dan Watters and Ram V pit the people who inhabit nature with those who violate it to enhance their status in civilization. The jungle of Peru becomes a battleground between those who burn for revenge and those who seek to become something more.

Rating 9.8/10
