High School has its dangers. At Harry Herpson High School, book reports may be the worst. The prospect worries Morty when Mrs. White challenges the class to visit the library, choose a book, and contemplate the characters, plot, and theme. Thankfully, there’s a new girl in class to take Morty’s mind off his fear of reading and writing.

Chigusa is a Japanese exchange student. She knows how to reward students who disrespect her. But she seems to like Morty. Can Chigusa help Morty overcome his fear of book reports? And how will the new girl shape Morty’s school year? Let’s leap into Rick And Morty: The Manga Vol 2: After-School Science Club SC and see!

Story

Morty has an eye for dangerous ladies. And when he sees Chigusa, he’s smitten. During their foray to the school library, Chigusa sees him reading a manga. Morty didn’t realize that manga were those Japanese comics where the characters are always screaming at each other. He had wondered why the school had such a large section of books on mangos. While introducing herself and her culture, Chigusa tells Morty about her favorite series: “The School Clubs are at War and it’s all because of My Bad Hair Day.”

Morty is at a crossroads in Rick And Morty: The Manga Vol 2: After-School Science Club SC. He thinks he may have an alien inside him after his latest adventure with his grandfather. Morty contemplates a less dangerous learning environment. But Chigusa's wrestling moves and her different culture lend her an exotic appeal. In Morty’s zeal to impress her, a lie leaps from his mouth before he can restrain it.

Josh Tierney follows Morty’s mission to make Chigusa enamored with him. When his grandfather bails him out, Morty and Chigusa get to spend more time together. But starting a club to impress Chigusa necessitates including other members. While Morty enjoys hanging with Chigusa, the other students share her interests. And to everyone's surprise, Rick gains a greater appreciation for Japanese culture and Chigusa's favorite manga series in Rick And Morty: The Manga Vol 2: After-School Science Club SC.

After Chigusa hurls a fellow student to the floor, hearts fill the air while Morty sits at his desk. A breeze makes her dark hair and skirt sway, and leaves waft through the air, as she talks to him in the library. Chigusa cringes with unruly hair as rival school clubs converge on her while retelling her favorite manga series. But aliens with head fins and bat ears bring Morty back to Earth in Rick And Morty: The Manga Vol 2: After-School Science Club SC.

Jeyodin’s gray shading deepens Rick’s vow to help his grandson as he raises a volume of Chigusa’s favorite manga triumphantly above his head. But when working alone in his garage, Rick drinks as he studies the panel-packed pages. At school, Chigusa presses clasped hands against her cheek as she flashes her alluring eyes at Morty. As they stand before a billboard for his new Science Club, Morty smiles and touches his hair while Rick gazes down on them from the poster.

Crank, Taylor Esposito, and Jeyodin fill dialogue balloons and narrative boxes with uppercase black letters that grow bold for intonation and swell for raised voices. Morty's thoughts appear as small letters in backgrounds, while a merry maid who speaks tiny dialogue into a balloon inspires Rick's first club outing. Words flow from the left to the right side of each page as sound effects accompany lethal banging, a katana-wielding new member, Rick making his entrance, and much more. Still, nothing grabs the reader's attention like Morty's ever-changing expressions, as his extreme reactions to each situation evoke his criticism of Japanese comics. Final Thoughts

As Morty discovers the world of manga, his mission to make Chigusa his girlfriend dovetails with the theme of her favorite series. But relying on his grandfather to spearhead his efforts means risking the dangers of the universe. And as aliens threaten Morty and awaken long-held fears, Rick threatens to blow Morty's world apart in more ways than one in Rick And Morty: The Manga Vol 2: After-School Science Club SC.
