Kara Zor-El's decision to return to Midvale and resume life as Linda Danvers got off to a rocky start. Her fellow Kryptonian, Lesla-Lar, escaped from Kandor, stole her identity, and moved in with Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers. After apprehending Lesla, Kara agreed to rehabilitate her.

Sadly, the Kandorian science council didn't tell Kara that their time together would be short. With Lesla in danger of losing her molecular cohesion on Earth, Kara returned the incredible shrinking girl to her miniature city. Can Kara ease back into her life as Linda Danvers in Midvale? And did her fight with Lesla at Clarissa's New Year's Eve party destroy her hometown's trust in Supergirl? Let’s find a phone booth, leap into Supergirl #10, and see!

Story

Lena Luthor usually avoids "Normies." The young woman is used to rejection, as her father's reputation precedes her. But Kara accepted her in her circle of friends. Still, that doesn’t mean everyone welcomes Lena’s inclusion in Kara’s inner circle. Clarissa loves fashion and contemporary society. Lena is a Goth at heart and therefore feels at odds with society. When Clarissa tries to impose her values on her friends and tells Lena it's her way or the highway, Lena plots with Lesla-Lar to sabotage Clarissa’s No Beer New Year party.

After the hijinks got out of hand, Kara cut herself off from Lena. While Lena still feels a connection with Luna, Lex Luthor’s daughter wants to reconnect with Superman’s niece in Supergirl #10. Lena has taken steps to facilitate their reconnection. Still, she takes Luna's advice and starts small. But when Lena and Luna learn that Kara has initiated a new relationship, they fear that it will doom their closeness with Kara.

Sophie Campbell introduces readers to Kara’s yearning for romance through Lena and Luna’s eyes. While investigating Kara’s attraction to her date, Lena and Luna demonstrate how Kara has influenced them. And when they sense danger, they reveal their loyalty, even if Kara is cutting them out of her life. Love may be in the air as Valentine’s Day approaches. But as Supergirl #10 demonstrates, there are many forms of love, and the relationships that nurture your abilities, empower you to make your own decisions, and help you grow are always worth fighting for.

Lena’s Goth appearance can push away others. So, she pulls her dark hair into a ponytail to showcase her short white hair and wears less noticeable earrings as she and Luna approach the Danvers residence. Despite the snow and their thick jackets and knitted hats, they remain outside Kara's home. As Lena eats the gift she bought for Kara, she wonders how to get her back in her life. Like detectives, Lena and Luna hide behind bushes, and Lena peers at Kara and her date through binoculars. But Kara's radiant smile and her closeness with the hot, tattooed guy seem to justify Luna's fears.

While Joe Quinones adorns Supergirl #10 with a palette of bright, attractive colors, the yards and bushes link with Lena’s eyes, hair streak, and the circles on her forehead. Even the air turns green as she watches Kara, suggesting that Lena and her world are Kryptonite to Kara's future. Yet Luna's pink-red hair links with the young man’s earring. As Kara and her date grow closer, the air turns pink, reminding Luna of how romance can destroy friendships. And the couple certainly look made for each other, as Kara's gray dress goes with his coat, while her jacket looks good next to the illustrated man’s pants.

Becca Carey portrays the girls' dialogue as uppercase letters in white dialogue balloons and Kara's thoughts in clouds. The black and pink letters grow bold for intonation, swell for raised voices, and shrink when Luna digs deep within herself. Electronic devices signal danger as Lena intervenes to protect her friend. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

Lena Luthor violated Kara’s trust when she helped Lesla-Lar defy Kara’s authority. She unintentionally robbed Kara of her autonomy and damaged her credibility. While Kara wants to forgive Lena, memories of the friends and loved ones she has lost weigh on her. Even the leaders of the miniature Kryptonian city that Kara safeguards keep secrets from her. Not knowing whom she can trust, Kara finds herself in a holding pattern, struggling to put the past behind her in Supergirl #10.
