Story

Gennaro and Imelda were searching for Bisconte Draculó when they got separated. Still, their mother trained them well. Gennaro believes that Imelda can handle whatever danger she faces. And this church has been their rendezvous point since they began hunting vampires. Gennaro urges his brother to calm down and be patient. He’s sure that their sister will arrive soon.

 

In Vampire Survivors #1, Antonio plays by the rules. And despite how well their mother trained them, he worries that Gennaro is trying to run before he can walk. The Bisconte Draculó isn’t just any vampire. He’s the most dangerous one they could tackle. So, now, while Gennaro is safe, their sister could suffer from Gennaro’s ambitions.

 

David Hazan’s family drama zips along at a breakneck pace. When Imelda stumbles into the church, trouble follows. Yet other members of the vampire-hunting community sense the trouble Gennaro and Imelda have aroused. As they come to the siblings’ aid, they also blame Gennaro for the attack on their community. Yet as the forces of evil invade this Italian church, no one blames herself more for the trouble she has unleashed than Imelda in Vampire Survivors #1.

 

Art

As lightning arcs across the dark sky, a figure in a shredded cloak stumbles past the barren trees and heaves open the wrought iron gates. Inside the church, Antonio confronts Gennaro in the central aisle. Light streams through the windows behind the altar, while candelabra flare like Roman candles. After Imelda pushes open the two-story wooden doors, she sprawls across the stone floor. As Imelda gazes up at her frightened brothers, a cloaked figure regards her from a bay between two pillars.

 

While Jimmy Kucaj introduces the characters like Gandalf introduced Bilbo Baggins and the dwarves to Beorn, Jão Canola lavishes a loaded palette on Vampire Survivors #1. As Imelda shares her experiences, she envisions broken churches, monuments, and statues beneath a red/orange sea. Past silhouettes of fish and sharks, yellow surrounds a red orb. Yet as Imelda remembers what the red orb is, she once again glimpses the skeletal figure with glowing yellow eyes, similarly dressed in a violet/indigo cloak.

 

While the actors burst onto the set, arrayed in their eye-catching outfits and wielding weapons, monsters invade their sanctum. Black uppercase words fill white dialogue balloons. Words grow bold for intonation and swell for raised voices, while color edges white boxes and surrounds balloons. Sound effects echo through the night, filling panels with louder thunder than the lightning, and threatening to transform the church into the ruins Imelda glimpsed in her vision. Final Thoughts

They come from different families. Antonio, Gennaro, and Imelda approach problems differently from their rivals. They may not want to work with Arca and Lama Ladonna. But when Imelda awakens the danger that threatens their Italian community, the two vampire-hunting families must join forces to combat the greater threat in Vampire Survivors #1.

Story

Aztrias Petanius may be the governor’s nephew. But despite his fine clothes and house, Conan soon realizes burgling the man’s belongings will net him little. Yet Conan The Barbarian: Scourge of the Serpent Vol 1 is not bound by time. While Demetrio the Inquisitor arrives to question Conan’s involvement in Kallian’s death, Professor John Kirowan meets with his friends Michael O’Donnel and James Gordon in Boston in 1934. Close-ups of Conan and a portrait of Aztrias compare the men’s health and sophistication. Fire from the braziers illuminates the stone walls and wainscotting. Waning light from the windows also creeps in. Yet as Conan searches the grand house, armored guards and a dog with a spiked collar approach.

 

As Jão Canola lavishes a rich palette of colors and textures on Ivan Gil’s detailed art, green and gold dominate Conan The Barbarian: Scourge of the Serpent Vol 1. The aristocracy and high-ranking officials wear green and gold, while a merchant clad in green attempts to open a golden bowl. In an earlier era, green images of Conan, Kull, and Kirowan inhabit light-green smoke. As Gonar counsels Brule, a golden serpent dragon adorns the Pict warrior's wrist. And far in the future, green drapes line the windows in John Kirowan’s book-filled study, as James Gordon shrinks from Michael O’Donnel’s gold-handled knife.

 

Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith place black uppercase letters into white dialogue balloons, while the narrator's words fill green-white boxes. The dialogue grows bold with intonation. Words enlarge with volume, while broken balloon borders attend lowered voices. And while John Kirowan consults his friend’s wife, black words in green balloons fill her mind. Final Thoughts

While we would like to believe that the future will be better than the past, that's not always the case. People come and go in our lives. Failure may follow success. And while we may gain knowledge and wisdom as we age, our bodies gradually lose the strength and vitality of our youth. So too is it for the Earth. Jim Zub traces the descent of civilization from its majestic beginnings, from times when men knew the gods, to an era when they are barely remembered, in Conan The Barbarian: Scourge of the Serpent Vol 1.

Story

Bêlit hails from Shem and believes they are safe in Kyros. Her crew bribed the port authorities. The locals ascribe tales of Bêlit and her mate Amra to legends, just as Bêlit associates Conan with blue-eyed northern giants. But trouble comes from an unexpected source when a thief attempts to rob them. Tarnasha begs for her life after Bêlit and Conan kill her accomplices. She tantalizes them with a lucrative deal. Bêlit identifies with the woman’s ability to shift on a Shemite Dernier. Conan feels uncomfortable working with someone who expresses no sorrow for her fallen companions.

 

Tarnasha shares Conan’s distrust of her new associates. That doesn’t stop her from thoroughly preparing for their mission. In Conan The Barbarian #18, Tarnasha’s target is Libradicio. A deal is going down tonight in the antiquarian’s house. The thief suggests they liberate the relic and the buyers’ coins at the same time.

 

Conan is reluctant to team up with Tarnasha. He is leery of attacking the Stygian buyers. Time has taught Conan to respect the Set cult’s magic. But Bêlit sees only the chance to grab some unexpected treasure. Conan The Barbarian #18 throws Conan into conflict with himself, his lover Bêlit, and the mysterious forces that inhabit his world. Like the sailors on the Tigriss, Conan will follow Bêlit into the jaws of death. Still, that doesn’t mean he has to like it.

After tempting us with a memory that evokes Greek myth, Danica Brine imbues Kyros with Roman appeal. Conan and Bêlit wander the narrow streets of the city built on a hill. They pass stalls laden with wares and sit in an outdoor café to plan their heist. A glimpse inside Libridicio’s home evokes the fabled Library of Alexandria. The antiquarian meets with guards wielding Egyptian swords and a priest with an elaborate headdress. The item for sale would make a Zamoran king squirm.

 

Jão Canola lavishes a loaded palette on The Wine Cask Of The West in Conan The Barbarian #18. Conan wears a green cloak and brown trousers, while Belit hangs a brown cloak over the purple silk that stretches across her breasts and groin. Compared with her new partners, Tarnasha hides behind purple shorts, a long-sleeved shirt, a magenta vest, brown gloves, and tall brown boots. Her attire and short blonde hair, combined with how she pledges an oath with Conan and Bêlit, evokes one of Alexandre Dumas’ immortal tales.

 

Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith conjure uppercase lettering into white dialogue balloons and yellow narrative boxes. The words grow bold for intonation, occasionally enlarge, and never shrink. Broken balloon borders suggest lowered voices, while enlarged and colored dialogue accompanies flying scarlet and falling bodies. Words in cloudy green balloons without arrows suggest this tale about Conan and Bêlit is far from finished. Thanks to Titan for providing a copy for review.

 

Final Thoughts

If the life of a thief precludes loyalty, the antique business proves equally devoid of morality. When Conan and Bêlit embark on a mission without knowing their accomplice, they get more than they bargained for in Conan The Barbarian #18.

Story

Conan serves aboard Bêlit’s ship. Unlike with Brissa and Chaundra, theirs is a bond forged in the raging fires of love. The firebrand treated the Cimmerian in a mating dance aboard The Tigress. In Twisting Loyalties Part 1: Fangs and Foolish Thieves, Bêlit takes Conan to the Hidden Haven in the Shemite city of Kyros. In a tavern frequented by brigands, they relax comfortably, enjoying drink and conversation at a corner table. She may no longer be on her boat surrounded by her loyal crew. Still, when a minstrel strums his lute, and his voice fills the lavishly appointed tavern, Bêlit rises and reenacts her mating dance. As the bartender remarks, the Cimmerian has found a soulmate in Conan The Barbarian #17.

 

Still, Conan worries this idyllic shore leave is too good to be true in Jim Zub's story. Won't the authorities be looking for them? Bêlit waves aside his concerns. The city’s leaders realize they cannot stop piracy. So, they don't pursue pirates and look the other way when ships dock in their port. A healthy system of bribery and a share of the booty keep the gears of government moving smoothly. The last thing the leaders want is for someone to rock the boat, so to speak, and irritate the pirates. If they can keep the violence out at sea, they protect their city and profit from looking the other way. Still, Conan wonders if Kyros is as safe for them as Bêlit believes.

 

Conan The Barbarian #17 returns readers to Robert E Howard's story "Queen Of The Black Coast." Chronologically, it follows issue #4, after Conan entered Thulsa Doom's dark tower and lost Brissa. Unlike then, Conan finds no captive Cimmerians. Nor does he battle the undead. Instead, he and Bêlit enjoy a respite from their maritime adventures. Then, some fellow thieves decide that lovebirds who rent the penthouse suite have more money than they need, and Bêlit gets an offer she can’t refuse.

 

Art

Lights illuminate the foot of the city. Sailors and workers walk along the dock of the crowded harbor. Two cloaked forms ascend the stairs, evoking Conan and Subotai exploring Zamora. They toss a coin in a dancer's bowl, shop in the marketplace, and pass someone smoking. (As they don't turn up their nostrils, it's likely Black Lotus, not Haga). A faint purple faze hangs over the less illuminated portions of the Hidden Haven. Decorated walls lead to intricate ceilings, while ornate lighting shines upon Conan and Bêlit when they remove their hoods.

 

Jão Canola lavishes a loaded palette on Danica Brine’s art in Conan The Barbarian #17. Colors shine brightly in the festive atmosphere. Bêlit is so relaxed she wears purple slippers, while Conan retains his brown boots. As they take a table, mauve candle smoke hangs over guests seated on cushions nearby. A richly colored panel interrupts a montage of inks on tan parchment as Bêlit sways to the music from a minstrel's lute.

Conan and Bêlit have become legendary pirates. Some may wonder how much their stories have grown in the telling. But in Conan The Barbarian #17, as they relax in Kyros, Bêlit discovers that Conan's worries are justified. Still, that doesn't prevent her from accepting a job that could prove more dangerous than Conan's final robbery with Chaundra and the Gloryhounds.

John Kirowan’s thirst for knowledge brought him to The Wanderers Club to meet El Borak. The scholar didn’t understand the adventurer’s fright until the Beast of the Black Stone attacked. Then, the creature invaded El Borak’s mind and killed him. His friend, John Conrad, was fueled by proof of this fantastic otherworldly power that brought them to the Hyborian Age. But like Pippin Took and Saruman’s Palantir, John Conrad didn’t respect the Black Stone’s power. So, the monster invaded John Conrad's mind like it had El Borak. In Conan: Battle of the Black Stone #4, John Kirowan’s friend lies dead with Dark Agnes and Conan the Cimmerian.

 

Conan’s investigation in the Pict lands near Conajohara served as a beacon across time and space. His death uproots the surviving heroes' anchor to the Hyborian Age. But John Kirowan refuses to be fate's puppet. Taking inspiration from Odin and the occult rituals he has studied, Kirowan chants an incantation and plunges a knife into his eye. After forging a link with this otherworldly energy, he perceives the spirits of Brissa’s ancestors walking through the forest. Like Star-Lord, the others help John Kirowan channel the Stone's energy into Conan's body, reviving the Cimmerian.

 

Soloman Kane threatened Conan when they met in Jim Zub’s story. As Soloman Kane didn’t know Brissa, his suspicion of Conan’s friend drove the wedge between him and the Cimmerian deeper as they traveled. Yet in Conan: Battle of the Black Stone #4, Soloman Kane risks his soul and place in eternity to revive Conan.

 

After his battle alongside Kull, Conan discarded the Atlantean sword in Shadizar, refusing to play an ongoing role in this otherworldly struggle. Now, Brissa holds what she wanted when they pursued the Tribe of the Lost beyond Hauler's Roam. She wields the spear of her ancestor, Brule. Her mother's spirit sent her on this quest for redemption. Like El Borak and John Conrad, the Black Stone invaded her people’s minds, turning some into zombies, corrupting their heritage, and dooming their future. Brissa must find a way to defeat it, or the Picts will be its slaves forever.

Jão Canola's otherworldly fire burns yellow and green, threatening to consume John Kirowan, Soloman Kane, and Brissa like Human torches. The fire tinges the forest orange and fills the background with darkness in Conan: Battle of the Black Stone #4. Yet as it surges through Conan's body, it turns his bulging eyes yellow, and he awakens as on Akiro’s sacred burial grounds. John Kirowan smiles as the green and yellow fire surges from his eye socket. Not only has he helped pull back a comrade from death's clutches. Finally, John Kirowan sees the world as he always yearned to.

 

Jonas Scharf's characters follow glowing spirits along a yellow serpentine trail while a blue-and-yellow Macaw wings overhead. Amid a break in the forest, the adventurers spy a beacon of light shooting through the color-filled sky, evoking Atali’s plea to Ymir for help. Walking alongside ghosty Picts, John Kirowan seems as confident as his living compatriots, while the spectral form of James Allison flies through the sky like Akiro’s spirits. When they find the monster surrounded by an orb of energy, perhaps John Kirowan remembers how his friend John Conrad compared it to a dirigible. Does the sword El Borak embedded in the creature's skull remind Soloman Kane of a cross on a lonely hill?

 

Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith conjure black uppercase words into white dialogue balloons and green narrative boxes in Conan: Battle of the Black Stone #4.
