Story

The Ladonna sisters claimed the Belpaese siblings went looking for easy conquests to make their reputations. When Imelda has a strange experience followed by successive monster attacks, it confirms her belief that she's been cursed. So while Antonio ventures into the Mad Forest to consult his former teacher, Gennaro accompanies Imelda to the Inlaid Library. But that doesn’t mean that everyone enjoys their separate quests.

 

In Vampire Survivors #2, Antonio talks to himself. Gennaro bickers. Whether in a monster-filled forest or a haunted library, dangers lurk everywhere. Drama and action heighten everyone's emotions as David Hazan interweaves Antonio's journey into the Mad Forest with Gennaro and Imelda's visit to the Inlaid Library. Both brothers seem more inclined to seek danger than let it come to them. Yet while Imelda believes she is cursed, she's also the only family member who finds happiness (if only for a moment).

 

Gennaro and Antonio may yearn to tackle monsters. Yet they don't want to look within and consider why they do the things they do. Like most people, Gennaro and Antonio prefer to get on with their lives and let their work define them. While her brothers keep grasping for low-hanging fruit, Imelda seeks to improve herself through education. Yet, like her brothers, she wants to call the shots. As she labors under the belief that she has stumbled in her quest for knowledge, Imelda seeks to learn how to protect herself from the dangers she has unleashed in Vampire Survivors #2.

 

Art

Jimmy Kucaj’s high-energy art increases all the characters’ hopes, fears, and insecurities. As they brave dangers, the family also battles their inner demons. Their environments are no less dramatic. Trees frame Antonio as he carries his whip past tilted headstones. He throws up an arm when a bat bursts from a panel. The trees, with trunks that evoke snakes, squeeze Antonio into a narrow path. Glowing eyes fill the dark canopy overhead.

 

While Antonio wears green as he battles monsters on the green sward, his former master wears a green cloak. Yet the same orange that trims Gennaro's clothes fills Maestro Poe's home. Orange drapes and books surround Gennaro as he bides his time while Imelda studies. Yet when the skeletal figure reappears, it wears a purple cloak to match Imelda's dress.

 

As Jão Canola adorns Vampire Survivors #2 with a vibrant palette, Chas Pangburn fills white balloons with black uppercase letters. Dialogue enlarges and changes color while balloons change shape amid heightened emotions. As sound effects swarm this game adaptation, David Hazan's story proves anything but a relaxing read in a book-filled library (or home). Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.

 

Final Thoughts

The race is on to discover what happened to Imelda, and what the Belpaese siblings can do to lift the curse. Gennaro's unbridled ambition may have caused Imelda's curse. Still, he must support Imelda rather than questing for a cure like his more cautious brother in Vampire Survivors #2.

Story

As Conan: Tides of the Tyrant King #1 follows the Cimmerian’s struggle to find value in civilized society, it also checks in on Steve Costigan. Six years have passed since he fought for civilization in Montfaucon, France. After the Great War ended, Steve wandered. He sought meaning in all the death and destruction. The anguish he endured seeing his comrades die on the battlefield, and how they treated the people they fought to protect, refuses to fade. So, when his footsteps lead him into Chinatown in London, England, Steve accepts the manager's invitation and steps within the Temple of Dreams.

 

As Jim Zub's story ponders the role civilization plays in Human progress, he backtracks to the Thurian Era. Humans tend to think of time as a straight line. Yet for Gonar the Seeker, time is a circle. Sitting cross-legged before a fire in the Thurian Age, Gonar peers past the boundaries of time and space. Yet a living Black Hole gathers stars with its tentacles to the vortex at its center. In the Hyborian Age, Conan frowns as he regards the crowded tavern. Some drink wildly. Intoxication drives others to rage. A tavern wench smiles as she delivers drinks to other customers. Yet still, Conan frowns.

 

Millennia later, Steve Costigan reclines on a wooden platform. Sweat drenches his features as a wisp of smoke escapes his pipe. Around him, smokers close their eyes and relax as they sink into oblivion. Yet Steve remains restless. Jésus Merino provides readers a glimpse inside Steve's mind. Amid decaying corpses, silhouettes of violence, and explosions, tears stream from Steve's eyes.

 

As a purple cosmic entity devours stars in a blue-and-black sky, the brown trees and ground surrounding Gonar match the interior of Conan's tavern. An orange-and-yellow vision signals Steve Costigan's connection with Thulsa Doom’s resurgence. Jão Canola uses gold to link Steve's pipe and Conan's medallions with a woman each meets. Yet like green, gold also links Steve, Conan, and the mysterious woman with Thulsa Doom in Conan: Tides of the Tyrant King #1.

 

Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith convey Jim Zub’s strong narrative voice with uppercase black letters in colored narrative boxes. Steve speaks in roughly shaped balloons as he struggles to put the past behind him, and spherical balloons when he recaptures what he lost. The rough balloons link Steve to Conan’s adversary, and a voice that speaks amid roughly shaped beige circles outlined with red. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.

 

Final Thoughts

Raiders killed her parents when she was a child. She grew up as a servant. As Steve Costigan fought to preserve civilization, Zuleika served beneath Thulsa Doom. While Conan and Steve can sense the sorcerer, Thulsa Doom seems ignorant of her extraordinary abilities. Yet like Gonar the Seeker, Zuleika recognizes that time and space are illusions. As Thulsa Doom arrays his forces for another bid to take over the world, Zuleika’s role seems inextricably linked with the sorcerer and the power of the Black Stone in Conan: Tides of the Tyrant King #1.

Story

Gennaro and Imelda were searching for Bisconte Draculó when they got separated. Still, their mother trained them well. Gennaro believes that Imelda can handle whatever danger she faces. And this church has been their rendezvous point since they began hunting vampires. Gennaro urges his brother to calm down and be patient. He’s sure that their sister will arrive soon.

 

In Vampire Survivors #1, Antonio plays by the rules. And despite how well their mother trained them, he worries that Gennaro is trying to run before he can walk. The Bisconte Draculó isn’t just any vampire. He’s the most dangerous one they could tackle. So, now, while Gennaro is safe, their sister could suffer from Gennaro’s ambitions.

 

David Hazan’s family drama zips along at a breakneck pace. When Imelda stumbles into the church, trouble follows. Yet other members of the vampire-hunting community sense the trouble Gennaro and Imelda have aroused. As they come to the siblings’ aid, they also blame Gennaro for the attack on their community. Yet as the forces of evil invade this Italian church, no one blames herself more for the trouble she has unleashed than Imelda in Vampire Survivors #1.

 

Art

As lightning arcs across the dark sky, a figure in a shredded cloak stumbles past the barren trees and heaves open the wrought iron gates. Inside the church, Antonio confronts Gennaro in the central aisle. Light streams through the windows behind the altar, while candelabra flare like Roman candles. After Imelda pushes open the two-story wooden doors, she sprawls across the stone floor. As Imelda gazes up at her frightened brothers, a cloaked figure regards her from a bay between two pillars.

 

While Jimmy Kucaj introduces the characters like Gandalf introduced Bilbo Baggins and the dwarves to Beorn, Jão Canola lavishes a loaded palette on Vampire Survivors #1. As Imelda shares her experiences, she envisions broken churches, monuments, and statues beneath a red/orange sea. Past silhouettes of fish and sharks, yellow surrounds a red orb. Yet as Imelda remembers what the red orb is, she once again glimpses the skeletal figure with glowing yellow eyes, similarly dressed in a violet/indigo cloak.

 

While the actors burst onto the set, arrayed in their eye-catching outfits and wielding weapons, monsters invade their sanctum. Black uppercase words fill white dialogue balloons. Words grow bold for intonation and swell for raised voices, while color edges white boxes and surrounds balloons. Sound effects echo through the night, filling panels with louder thunder than the lightning, and threatening to transform the church into the ruins Imelda glimpsed in her vision. Final Thoughts

They come from different families. Antonio, Gennaro, and Imelda approach problems differently from their rivals. They may not want to work with Arca and Lama Ladonna. But when Imelda awakens the danger that threatens their Italian community, the two vampire-hunting families must join forces to combat the greater threat in Vampire Survivors #1.

Story

Aztrias Petanius may be the governor’s nephew. But despite his fine clothes and house, Conan soon realizes burgling the man’s belongings will net him little. So, when Aztrias points him toward richer pickings, Conan heads off to find Kallian Publico’s antiques house. But when Conan slips inside, the watchman Dionus finds him. And instead of spotting a jeweled goblet, Conan sees Kallian Publico sprawled before an ancient, bowl-shaped sarcophagus.

 

Yet Conan The Barbarian: Scourge of the Serpent Vol 1 is not bound by time. While Demetrio the Inquisitor arrives to question Conan’s involvement in Kallian’s death, Professor John Kirowan meets with his friends Michael O’Donnel and James Gordon in Boston in 1934. And when Michael shows a recent purchase, an antique knife, James reacts with undue fright.

 

As Jim Zub's narration links these disparate events together, our guide also travels to the distant past. When Brule the Spear-Slayer approaches him, Gonar the Seeker advises the Pict to seek out King Kull in Valusia. While treachery threatens the newly crowned monarch, Gonar advises Brule of Kull's importance.

 

As Brule meets Kull and uncovers the palace's secrets, Professor John Kirowan and Michael O'Donnel help James Gordon determine why Evelyn attacked him. Conan crouches in the shadows as the guards ride past on the dry and cracking dirt road. Stone walls and barred windows guard the houses on each side. As the sun sinks in the sky, Conan creeps across the rounded top of a wall, avoiding the spikes rising from the epicenter. Behind him, towers and temples rise to greet the approaching night.

 

Close-ups of Conan and a portrait of Aztrias compare the men’s health and sophistication. Fire from the braziers illuminates the stone walls and wainscotting. Waning light from the windows also creeps in. Yet as Conan searches the grand house, armored guards and a dog with a spiked collar approach.

 

As Jão Canola lavishes a rich palette of colors and textures on Ivan Gil’s detailed art, green and gold dominate Conan The Barbarian: Scourge of the Serpent Vol 1. The aristocracy and high-ranking officials wear green and gold, while a merchant clad in green attempts to open a golden bowl. In an earlier era, green images of Conan, Kull, and Kirowan inhabit light-green smoke. As Gonar counsels Brule, a golden serpent dragon adorns the Pict warrior's wrist. And far in the future, green drapes line the windows in John Kirowan’s book-filled study, as James Gordon shrinks from Michael O’Donnel’s gold-handled knife.

 

Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith place black uppercase letters into white dialogue balloons, while the narrator's words fill green-white boxes. The dialogue grows bold with intonation. Words enlarge with volume, while broken balloon borders attend lowered voices. And while John Kirowan consults his friend’s wife, black words in green balloons fill her mind. Final Thoughts

While we would like to believe that the future will be better than the past, that's not always the case. People come and go in our lives. Failure may follow success. And while we may gain knowledge and wisdom as we age, our bodies gradually lose the strength and vitality of our youth. So too is it for the Earth. Jim Zub traces the descent of civilization from its majestic beginnings, from times when men knew the gods, to an era when they are barely remembered, in Conan The Barbarian: Scourge of the Serpent Vol 1.
