Solomon Kane: The Lion Errant #3 Cover Preview

Cover A: Nick Marinkovich

Solomon Kane doesn’t feel in control of his life. After reuniting with his friends, he tells Abramo Bensaid and his daughter Diamanta about his wanderings. But Abramo, mystic and scholar, is most interested in Solomon’s staff. The wooden staff topped with a cat’s head has protected Solomon from the Undead. It also helps Solomon Kane communicate with N’Longa, the shaman who gave it to him.

When Solomon seeks N’Longa’s insight, how will the shaman advise the Puritan? And can the Atlantean carvings on the staff protect him amid the war brewing between provinces of the Mughal Empire?

Ramih Khan is the Regent of Sidhi. Asaf Khan is the Regent of Karra. Neither holds power by right of ancestry. So, to solidify their status, their forces attack Gondwana. Durgavati, the province’s ruler, is still young and beautiful. More importantly, she has the wealth and status they seek. As a widow raising a young prince, both men view the Maharani of Gondwana as a prize.

Diwan Beohar Kayastha, Durgavati’s steward, has traveled to Agra, Hindustan. When the Emperor of the Mughal Empire granted him an audience, Beohar requested protection from Gondwana’s aggressors. Yet in secret, Emperor Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar smiles on his Khans’ actions. For Gondwana to know peace, Maharani Durgavati must surrender her lands and choose Ramid or Asaf as her next husband. But what will happen to Durgavati and Prince Vir if she accepts a marriage proposal? And what sorcery or magic links a Puritan warrior with a deceased holy man? Let’s grab our swords, leap into Solomon Kane: The Lion Errant #2, and see!

Story

It is a dark and stormy night when Chandra Shah arrives at Fortress Chauragarh. Maharani Durgavati invites her brother-in-law to join them. But the Master of Scouts isn’t interested in eating dinner. He reports that Ramih Khan's army is marching west. To Chandra’s surprise, Diwan Beohar Kayastha realizes that Ramih Khan’s forces are uniting with Asaf Khan’s army to attack them. Worse, his late brother’s widow refuses to retreat deeper into Gondwana and let her Chieftains defend her.

In Solomon Kane: The Lion Errant #2, Patrick Zircher interlaces his Puritan hero’s tale with views inside Fortress Chauragarh and Asaf Khan's manor house. His slow-paced story reveals Durgavati's determination to rule. It also shows how people respond to her leadership and contrasts this with how Asaf Khan and Ramih Khan treat the people in their care. Yet as the two factions mobilize for war, Solomon Kane walks an uncertain path. Shunned by civilization, the Puritan wanders through the wilderness, led by a lion that shares its food with him.

Yet, as Solomon Kane insists on moving forward, even if he doesn't know where he is going, the lion eventually leads him back to civilization. Unlike Asaf Khan and Ramih Khan, the Puritan meets someone content with the power he wields. And as he receives a warm welcome, Solomon Kane regales his listeners with tales from his travels. In this land torn by the avarice of the two Khans, Solomon most fears that Fate has taken over his life. So, even if it goes against everything he's been taught to believe, the Puritan seeks counsel on how to regain control of his life in Solomon Kane: The Lion Errant #2.

Art

Rain streaks down amid the lightning as a rider drives his horse along a narrow dirt road. He enters a fortress filled with arched doorways and interior supports. As his Rani rises to greet him, her court remains seated cross-legged on the stone floor. Despite the flowers adorning her ears, her eyes bespeak determination, and a white dot on her forehead shines like the sun.

Like the Puritan’s black hat, cloak, and clothes, a lion sports a black mane as he strides ahead. Along with the scratches on Durgavati’s arm, the head of the Puritan’s staff links with the King of Beasts. Yet when a streak of light prompts a miniature dust storm, the lion bolts as men wearing turbans carry muskets, and Solomon Kane draws his flintlock pistol.

Patrick Zircher adorns his detailed art with a rich palette in Solomon Kane: The Lion Errant #2. Yet he retreats to a single color when portraying earlier moments from the characters’ lives. Asaf Khan’s attire links him to the characters’ lavender and brown-colored memories as he bows to Ramih Khan’s guidance. Yet a green realm links Solomon to Durgavati’s private, blue-green domain.

Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith fill white dialogue balloons and narrative boxes with black uppercase letters. The letters shrink for lowered voices, enlarge for raised voices, and grow bold with intonation. Lowercase letters in black boxes introduce characters and settings, while Solomon Kane shares his thoughts and memories in beige boxes. As gunshots echo across the rocky plateau, an uninvited guest’s feasting disturbs two men filling the Mughal Empire with fear. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

While Conan the Barbarian made Robert E Howard famous, one of the writer's great loves was historical epics. Patrick Zircher draws on the Puritans' original adventures to set Solomon Kane amid historical events in Africa. Then, Zircher spices his grand-scale storytelling with the supernatural à la H Rider Haggard in Solomon Kane: The Lion Errant #2.

The Savage Sword of Conan: Reforged #2 Preview

COVER A: PATRICK ZIRCHER

I remember the first time I saw an issue of Savage Sword in color. I was attending a science fiction convention, and a vendor had it at a table in the exhibit hall. Because it bore a #1, I assumed that Marvel Comics had originally colored the Black & White Magazine. As it turned out, it wasn't old or rare. Instead, the issue was an annual or special #1. Still, it was such a thrill to hold a color copy of Savage Sword in my hands, and read Roy Thomas' story about my favorite barbarian hero!

A lot of time may have passed since those halcyon days when a movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger was the talking point of every Conan fan. Still, thanks to Titan Comics and Heroic Signatures, Conan fans can experience the same thrill I did over four decades ago.

The Savage Sword of Conan #9 Review

Writer: Patrick Zircher & Fabian Nicieza

Artist: Patrick Zircher & Sean Chen

Pinup Artists: Valerio Giangirodano & Geof Isherwood

Letterers: Richard Starkings & Tyler Smith

Cover Artists: Neal Adams & Alex Horley

Publisher: Titan Comics

Price: $6.99

Release Date: July 9, 2025

Conan and Valeria teamed up to battle a dragon. Despite Xuchotl's age and wealth, they also found treachery and sorcery. Surrounded by death, Conan and Valeria leave the city covered in emerald behind. The dragon killed their horses. How will the two pirates enjoy their hike back to the sea? And what threats did King Kull face thousands of years before the events in Red Nails? Let's grab our swords, leap into The Savage Sword of Conan #9, and see!

The Sunless Isle: Story

Relying on each other in combat is one thing. Getting along, especially when tired and hungry, is another. King Olmec tried to rape Valeria. Queen Tascela attempted to steal her youth. As they walk, Valeria's sense of violation grows. She ended up in Xuchotl because she dared to kill a rapist. So, despite their plan to go to the Stygian coast, Valeria argues they should head to Shem instead. Conan dislikes the change of plan. But even in the Hyborian Age, a woman had a right to change her mind.

Patrick Zircher’s tale in The Savage Sword of Conan #9 takes Conan and Valeria to Asgalun, a great port and trade center of Shem. Like Conan, Valeria, and Subotai in John Milius’ story, the travelers’ exploits attract the monarch's notice. And as with King Osric of Zamora, King Uziaman wants the wayfarers to free his land of a menace. But this time, instead of traveling to battle an evil sorcerer, they bring one to aid their cause.

The Sunless Isle reminds us that friendship doesn’t erase our uniqueness, and embracing our differences makes us stronger. By building the tension between Conan, Valeria, the sorcerer Netahn, and their fellow travelers, Patrick Zircher enhances his action-packed story with naturally arising drama.

The Sunless Isle: Art

Conan and Valeria stand amid the slain. The emblem of Xuchotl, and the nails embedded in an ebony pillar, no longer fill its inhabitants with pride. But Conan and Valeria regard each other in triumph. They smile as they walk together through the surrounding forest. When the trees give way to arid plains, the distance between the travelers grows. Then, Patrick Zircher shows Conan and Valeria unleashing their frustrations as they battle side by side, protecting a caravan in The Savage Sword of Conan #9.

Highly detailed pencils convey the grandeur of Asgalun, give King Uziaman’s throne room a regal air, and transport the reader on an ocean expedition battling storms and stillness. A mysterious island, an ancient palace adorned with an immense carved likeness of its ruler, and the dangers Conan and Valeria encounter evoke the movies of Ray Harryhausen and Peter Jackson. Yet the appearance of the sorcerer with whom they travel recalls a villain from John Boorman's homage to the legendary King Arthur.

The Invisible Assassin: Story

Fabian Nicieza opens a new era of King Kull’s reign. Valusia enjoys peace and prosperity after emerging victorious from war. Kull’s friend Brule rules the Allied Pictish Isles. Kelkor, the commander of the Red Slayer guard, has been exonerated. Tolahn, newly appointed commander of the Black Legion army, has demonstrated patience and wisdom in battle. Kull returned from a recent trade expedition from Pai-P’u-Yen with a scientific breakthrough. The new crystalline armor represents an improvement over other types of armor. But how can you confirm an armor's superiority if you lack a foe to test its battle worthiness?

In this second, shorter story in The Savage Sword of Conan #9, Kelkor and Tolahn battle a new threat. Empowered by their superior armor, the leaders face a seemingly invulnerable foe. Fabian Nicieza ponders the value of working together and why we fought for our hard-won goals.

The Invisible Assassin: Art

Sean Chen delivers lavish depictions of Valusia’s splendor and the romance of armored knights competing for honor in tournaments. Horse-drawn carts transport harvested crops, while guards surround the rounded towers and domes that rise beyond the city walls. Imprints and direction lines suggest the wind. Stars flare around a man’s face, and geometric designs adorn his barely perceptible form.

Lettering

Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith deliver uppercase letters in white dialogue balloons and narrative boxes. Words swell for raised voices, and music notes accompany melodious tones. Councilor Tu's recollections appear as cursive lowercase letters. While larger than the printed words, their elegant counterparts in gray boxes slow the pace. Sound effects evoke beings from Clash Of The Titans, Mysterious Island, and some of Roy Thomas’ earliest stories in Marvel’s Conan The Barbarian. Thanks to Titan Comics and Heroic Signatures for providing a review copy.

Final Thoughts

Desire can sweep us away. In our quest for what we want, we can easily lose sight of others’ rights. Patrick Zircher’s story about Conan and Valeria focuses on the destructive nature of unrestrained sexual desire. Then, Fabian Nicieza delivers a timely meditation comparing the perception of war with the dangers of peace in The Savage Sword of Conan #9.
