Eight years have passed since Conan left home. Yet Conan has lived a lifetime. Gone is the young man seeking the meaning of his soul. Conan has become a tactician who knows when a leader deploys his soldiers effectively or uses them to shield him. Still, the urge to return home proves irresistible. What will Conan find when he sets course for Cimmeria? Will the kin of his native land welcome his return? Let’s grab our swords and battle axes, leap into Conan The Barbarian TP Vol 1, and find out!

Story

When Conan joined his Cimmerian kin at Venarium, he defended his homeland against Aquilonian invaders. Now, an Aquilonian landlord offers him a warm meal and a room while a one-eyed woman offers him a hot kind of hospitality. But an enjoyable evening gets moved to the back burner when the sky darkens, and a Pict scout rides into Hauler's Roam.

The villagers and visitors disregard Brissa’s claim that an unbeatable army is heading their way in Conan The Barbarian TP Vol 1. So, when it arrives, Conan and Brissa fight while others die. Then, they watch from the shadows as the army eschews valuables for corpses. The Cimmerian and the Pict scout follow the lifeless, decaying troops dragging the fallen toward Conan’s homeland.

While Conan seeks a homecoming he cannot receive, Brissa grasps at any link with her lost kin. For these are her people who have become mindless, slaughtering abominations. Reeling with loss, Brissa latches onto anything she can call her own. At first, she claims Conan’s sword is a Pict artifact stolen from her people. Later, Brissa finds more value in friendship with Conan than a reminder of her culture and history.

Conan must also face the specter of his people’s transformation. Some have died. Others are near death in Jim Zub’s story. Perhaps he wonders if his absence led his people to this plight. Yet the great evil that hangs over Cimmeria threatens the Hyborian world in Conan The Barbarian TP Vol 1. To defeat it, Conan and Brissa must brave the horrors of a dark citadel, inhuman magicians, and an otherworldly realm that sucks the life of all who descend into its depths.

Art

Roberto De La Torre reintroduces Conan to 21st-century readers with art that evokes the classic Marvel series. He spices up panel-packed pages with vignettes, one-page scenes, and the occasional double-page spread. He fills Conan The Barbarian TP Vol 1 with dramatic encounters and action-packed panels that portray people living and facing death amid the rugged beauty of the frontier. Two pages of character sketches show Brissa’s development as a friend and compatriot of Conan.

Like the blue stripe that crosses Brissa’s features, Dean White & Jose Villarrubia breathe vitality into De La Torre’s iconic art. Conan and Brissa’s skin may fade to gray at night when they face the undead or watch zombies drag their victims toward an ethereal green light. Crashing swords and flying scarlet amid historic dwellings and undeveloped nature recall the glories of the 1980s four-color comics. After Jim Zub’s story about Conan, Brissa, and the Black Stone concludes, a four-page gallery shows all the colorful covers created for the first four issues of this new series.

Richard Starkings delivers black uppercase lettering in dialogue balloons and boxes. He also dips his quill into various inks and writes his block script in backgrounds. Sound effects heighten confrontations between Conan, the Hyborian undead, reptilian creatures, and a priest who orders victims flung into a deadly emerald pool. Jeffrey Shanks provides four pages of insightful commentary on Robert E Howard's worldbuilding, fascination with the Picts, and why Conan has leaped from Howard's typewriter into readers' hearts. Thanks to Titan Comics for providing a copy for review.

Final Thoughts

While acknowledging the equality of women and respect for other cultures, Conan The Barbarian TP Vol 1 pays homage to Robert E Howard’s classic stories. Conan befriends a rival for Bêlit and Valeria, fights zombies, ventures into a hidden stronghold, confronts malevolent monsters, and speaks with spirits long past as he remains defiant, dauntless, and undefeatable.

Rating 9.8/10

Conan The Barbarian: Bound In Black Stone Vol 1 Preview

Regular Cover by Dan Panosian

Last week, a family emergency prevented me from taking long, considered looks at new stories. But I'd been itching to review this trade for some time. I reviewed the first two issues when they came out, and posted short rereads for the first four issues last summer. So I found it calming to focus my mind on this familiar story as my wife and I made the long drive to visit a family member in the hospital. Perhaps it's apropos, as this story forces Brissa and Conan to confront the suffering and loss of their kin.

Here's a preview of this first volume in Titan's new Conan saga. Enjoy!

Conan The Barbarian #17 Review

Cover Artists: Roberto de la Torre, Dean Kotz, Stephanie Lavand, Ace Continuado & Denis Medri

Conan and Bêlit have sailed together for nearly a year. Under the guise of Amra The Lion, Conan has fought alongside his pirate lover and dyed the sea scarlet. Can the couple maintain their invincibility on land? Let's grab our swords and battle axes, shout “By Crom,” venture into Conan The Barbarian #17, and find out!

Story

Conan serves aboard Bêlit’s ship. Unlike with Brissa and Chaundra, theirs is a bond forged in the raging fires of love. The firebrand treated the Cimmerian in a mating dance aboard The Tigress. In Twisting Loyalties Part 1: Fangs and Foolish Thieves, Bêlit takes Conan to the Hidden Haven in the Shemite city of Kyros. In a tavern frequented by brigands, they relax comfortably, enjoying drink and conversation at a corner table. She may no longer be on her boat surrounded by her loyal crew. Still, when a minstrel strums his lute, and his voice fills the lavishly appointed tavern, Bêlit rises and reenacts her mating dance. As the bartender remarks, the Cimmerian has found a soulmate in Conan The Barbarian #17.

Still, Conan worries this idyllic shore leave is too good to be true in Jim Zub's story. Won't the authorities be looking for them? Bêlit waves aside his concerns. The city’s leaders realize they cannot stop piracy. So, they don't pursue pirates and look the other way when ships dock in their port. A healthy system of bribery and a share of the booty keep the gears of government moving smoothly. The last thing the leaders want is for someone to rock the boat, so to speak, and irritate the pirates. If they can keep the violence out at sea, they protect their city and profit from looking the other way. Still, Conan wonders if Kyros is as safe for them as Bêlit believes.

Conan The Barbarian #17 returns readers to Robert E Howard's story "Queen Of The Black Coast." Chronologically, it follows issue #4, after Conan entered Thulsa Doom's dark tower and lost Brissa. Unlike then, Conan finds no captive Cimmerians. Nor does he battle the undead. Instead, he and Bêlit enjoy a respite from their maritime adventures. Then, some fellow thieves decide that lovebirds who rent the penthouse suite have more money than they need, and Bêlit gets an offer she can’t refuse.

Art

Lights illuminate the foot of the city. Sailors and workers walk along the dock of the crowded harbor. Two cloaked forms ascend the stairs, evoking Conan and Subotai exploring Zamora. They toss a coin in a dancer's bowl, shop in the marketplace, and pass someone smoking. (As they don't turn up their nostrils, it's likely Black Lotus, not Haga). A faint purple faze hangs over the less illuminated portions of the Hidden Haven. Decorated walls lead to intricate ceilings, while ornate lighting shines upon Conan and Bêlit when they remove their hoods.

Jão Canola lavishes a loaded palette on Danica Brine’s art in Conan The Barbarian #17. Colors shine brightly in the festive atmosphere. Bêlit is so relaxed she wears purple slippers, while Conan retains his brown boots. As they take a table, mauve candle smoke hangs over guests seated on cushions nearby. A richly colored panel interrupts a montage of inks on tan parchment as Bêlit sways to the music from a minstrel's lute.

Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith sail uppercase lettering into white dialogue balloons and narrative boxes. The words grow bold for intonation, occasionally enlarge, and never shrink. Broken balloon borders suggest lowered voices, while enlarged and colored dialogue accompanies flying scarlet and falling bodies. Thanks to Titan for providing a copy for review.

Final Thoughts

Conan and Bêlit have become legendary pirates. Some may wonder how much their stories have grown in the telling. But in Conan The Barbarian #17, as they relax in Kyros, Bêlit discovers that Conan's worries are justified. Still, that doesn't prevent her from accepting a job that could prove more dangerous than Conan's final robbery with Chaundra and the Gloryhounds.

Jim Zub Interview Part 5: The Battle Of The Black Stone And Beyond

Conan The Barbarian #10 Cover C by Roberto de la Torre

David: [In Conan The Barbarian #10] It seemed like Rob [artist Roberto de la Torre] was hinting at doing a Steve Costigan story?

Jim: He loves Steve Costigan and with The Battle Of The Black Stone coming up we're peppering in a lot of other Howard characters from their respective times. All I can say is everyone [all of Robert E Howard’s characters] is on the table. In the future, if Rob wants to draw Sailor Steve Costigan, I'm surely not going to hold him back because that's the vision I want to see. If I can have my hand on the steering wheel for it, so much better.

Conan: Battle Of The Black Stone #1 Cover D by Samwise Didier

David: Does The Battle of the Black Stone directly follow Conan The Barbarian #12 then?

Jim: Yeah, narratively it does. Again, because of the Weird Tales structure, we can jump around the timeline a bit. Conan is older. It's probably taking place closest to Beyond The Black River so it's one of the later Conan stories but Conan's remembering stuff from Conan The Barbarian #1 to #12. Thematically it rides right from #12, but the character is older in terms of the timeline.

Conan The Barbarian #17 Cover A by Roberto de la Torre

David: So Conan The Barbarian #17 may follow #12 then?

Jim: Correct. We're going to flashback to Bêlit still being alive, at the height of their pirate fame, and show an adventure you haven't seen before of the two of them before they go down the Black River and she passes on and all that stuff. The reader knows the darkness to come, so I can have these little foreshadowing moments. Conan doesn't realize that of course. So, we can play with your knowledge as a reader versus the narration happening in the adventure before you.

David: Poul Anderson wrote a novel about Conan and Bêlit. [The famous Science Fiction & Fantasy author won 7 Hugo awards and 3 Nebula awards for his stories.]

Jim: Yeah. The only canon we're using for certain is the Howard stories. I've got access to everything else if I want to use them, but I don't have to. So things like the Atlantean blade that we brought into arc three [Issues #11 & 12] that looks a lot like the one from the movie. That's a personal Easter egg. It's such an iconic weapon that is associated with the character so closely. Here's a cool way we can use it and then carry on.

We're not locking ourselves down to one absolute unshakable canon. At some point, hopefully a long time for now, when I’ve stopped writing Conan, someone else needs the freedom to be able to explore between these stories as well. We're not trying to close everything off or shut every door. This character is as iconic as Batman or Superman or Spiderman or any of those other characters. There's an infinite number of stories to be told and this is my chance to roll with the baton as hard and as far as I can and hopefully surprise and entertain along the way.

Conan The Barbarian #11 Cover A by Alex Horley

David: I was happily surprised to see Yag-Kosha [from Robert E Howard’s story “The Tower Of The Elephant.” The Elephant-like alien appears in Titan’s Conan The Barbarian #9, #11, and #12].

Jim: Yeah, that was a big card turn that could have blown up in our face, but again, I wanna be able to shock you. I want to be able to surprise you. You think you've seen all the ingredients in all their forms and I'm like, no, we can do something fun that you've never quite seen before. It was a little audacious, but I'm glad it worked out.

Conan: Battle Of The Black Stone Cover A by Roberto de la Torre

David: Might Yag-Kosha be in The Battle of the Black Stone?

Jim: He's not in The Battle of the Black Stone but the things that he has observed, and his words, carry weight philosophically through upcoming stories.

I apologize for breaking off the interview back in August, but I plan to post the final portion of this interview soon. Thanks to Jim Zub and Titan Comics for allowing me to bring it to you!
