Wally West has a cool boss. Mr Terrific lets him follow his initiative, even if that means Wally rarely visits his office. And lately, Wally has been using the Speed Force to predict the future. This helps Mr Terrific build reliable weather models. Even better, it helps Wally foil crimes and prevent accidents in Central City and Keystone City.

But not everyone is a fan of The Flash's actions. Worse, not everyone trusts Wally with the power he assumes over people's lives. Is Green Arrow right to refuse Wally's offer to protect Star City? And how will the Justice League rule when Green Arrow asks them to weigh in on Wally's actions? Let's leap into The Flash #37 and see what happens!

Story

Wally has used his Flashes of Insight to prevent accidents and crimes in Central City. Anxious to build on what he's learned, Wally has gained Jon Kent's permission to prevent anything bad from happening in Metropolis. But lately, he's gotten pushback from his Justice League counterparts. When Wally considers extending his protection to Gotham, Red Tornado orders him to keep away. And when Wally offers to help Star City, Green Arrow also says, "No, thank you."

In The Flash #37, Wally is peeved by his friends’ lack of faith in him. So although he respects Red Tornado's explanation that Gotham is a war zone, he refuses to recognize Green Arrow's authority. As he gains experience using the Speed Force, Wally is protecting individuals from injury and death, and families from pain and anguish.

Yet in Ryan North's story, Wally is so excited by this new ability that he forgets how it unexpectedly manifested when he needed it. He also forgets that these Flashes of Insight aren't perfect, as one competitor in the "Easy Money in a Flash" contest ended up in the hospital. Wally even forgets how he overlooked a catastrophic threat while racing around a single city to ensure nothing bad happened to anyone.

So, Green Arrow is calling for an intervention. He wants someone to get Wally to sit still and think through what he’s doing. Moreover, with all the changes and shifting standards the Justice League is adopting, Green Arrow wants his fellow heroes to recognize that Wally is heading into murky waters. As for Wally, he may ask himself, "What would Batman do?" Yet Wally never recognizes that Batman is a skeptic in The Flash #37. The world's greatest detective would need a lot of convincing before he embraced such new abilities wholeheartedly.

Art

As Wally races across three cities, a local in Central City waves to him before a bridge. Like the vertical panels of the front page, three vertical panels show a bridge exploding in each city. Wally observes two people operating blasting machines with joy suffusing their faces. Then he appears multiple times in panels, operating computers while the person at the desk looks away. Later, Wally and his family gather within sight of the Central City Municipal Bridge. Yet Gavin Guidry pairs this scene with a panel of a super family gathering atop Mount Everest.

As Adriano Lucas paints The Flash #33 with a vibrant palette, red links Wally with the bridges and the terrorists' blasting machines. As the yellow-and-orange Speed Force blazes in his wake, yellow-and-orange explosions rock cities, while yellow tinges the office scenes. After a red-and-white close-up of Wally's eyes, he glimpses scenes tinged with yellow and orange. Yet as heroes gather on the white, snowy peak, their costumes and the flags fluttering around them celebrate this international monument to Human achievement.

Buddy Beaudoin fills white dialogue balloons with black uppercase letters, while Wally's small white lowercase thoughts fill red narrative boxes. Words grow bold with intonation and shrink for lowered voices, while building signs underline Wally's reverence for libraries. Sound effects accompany Wally's attempts to emulate Batman, rapid departures, and the air he displaces when he vanishes in the blink of an eye. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

Green Arrow may belong to the swelling ranks of the Justice League. Yet he's one of the few who lack superpowers. Suspicious of Wally's new abilities, Green Arrow wants help restraining Wally's exuberance. Yet the people he looks to for help invade people's privacy, advocate working with villains, and build interstellar empires while wielding unchecked, godlike abilities in The Flash #37.

Wally peers into

The Future!

Flash confronts Heat Wave on the sea floor—and in doing so has a breakthrough about how he can help the most people with his Flashes of Insight! After consulting with Mr. Terrific, Wally begins using the Speed Force—in combination with lightspeed passes throughout the city—to gather more data than he’s ever done and begins using it to help people before they get hurt! And best of all: It works.

Even peeking just a second into the future lets the Flash give Central City its first day where nothing goes wrong, and not a single accident occurs—and not even an attempted bank robbery by one of his Rogues can stop that! All that’s left now is to scale it up…to a level the world has never seen!

The Flash #34 Preview

When Wally started glimpsing the future, his visions helped him save lives. Yet as he concentrated on rescuing the people needlessly risking their lives, Wally missed the thefts of nuclear materials occurring in Central City. A team-up with Captain Cold helped Wally save the people he loves, along with the millions of people he doesn't. (Hey, if he knew them, he might learn to love them, albeit platonically).

Now that he's saved his city from annihilation, what's next for Wally West? Can he hone his new ability to ensure he doesn't miss someone building another bomb? And while he's learning new skills, will Wally remember to put Linda's casserole in the oven on time?

Gorillas Attack!

Mr. Terrific is helping Wally understand the new superpower he’s been experiencing and has come up with a way to test it. But when that results in the Flash seeing a vision of a dark future—okay, maybe not that dark but at least “concerning”—Central City overrun by a Gorilla Army!—he knows precisely where he needs to go to stop it. Can one man, even if he is objectively pretty fast, survive in the middle of enemy territory when all those enemies are really strong, super-intelligent gorillas? You’ll find out in this issue! Plus: It all leads to a second experiment, with even greater consequences!

While competitors in the Omega Tournament receive visions of tasks they must complete, Wally West also receives glimpses of the future. But instead of learning how to prepare for Darkseid's return, Wally sees people falling to their deaths.

With the website www.easymoneyina.flash awarding $10,000 each day for videos of fantastic saves, these Flashes of Insight keep Wally occupied. But while Wally rescues people from danger, he can't save everyone, and it takes a villain to tell Wally that someone has played him. How did the uranium thieves send Wally his Flashes of Insight? And can Wally and Captain Cold locate the thermonuclear bomb before it detonates? Let's leap into The Flash #33 and see!

Story

When Wally West and Captain Cold reached a private airport hangar outside Central City, they discovered that the thieves had already constructed their bomb and departed. As Wally searched through the building, he discovered the timer. Realizing that he only had twenty minutes until his city vanished in a mushroom cloud, Wally raced back and frantically searched Central City. But after fifteen minutes elapse, Wally realizes he needs to take a different approach to finding the bomb.

In The Flash #33, Wally’s thoughts race as fast as his feet. He ponders the ethics of his revised approach to finding the bomb. But just as his desire to save people led more people to endanger themselves for money, Wally remains uneasy about searching businesses and residences. Family is everything for Wally. He dislikes intruding on other people's turf. But if he can't find the bomb in time, the consequences will be infinitely worse than for the boy standing before an oncoming train whom Wally failed to notice.

In Ryan North’s story, Wally thinks increasingly like a detective. When the bomb proves elusive, he wonders who might construct it and why. His wife, Linda Park-West, draws on her journalistic skills to lend a hand. And just as the Justice League is relying on villains to prepare for Darkseid’s return, Wally looks to Captain Cold for help. But as the timer ticks down to zero, it’s up to Wally to determine why a villain might set off a bomb, and what might inspire their actions in The Flash #33.

Art

Wally's body starts to blur as he races through traffic on a splash page. He runs through circles laid atop a double-page overview of Central City. When Wally reaches the office that coordinated the contest, he finds it empty of people and equipment. Red-yellow lines trace along streets and into buildings from overhead. Thicker yellow-red bands of light follow Wally and wander through interiors like ribbons. Captain Cold stands still, his expression frozen, as Wally approaches. But when Wally halts behind him, the villain's body and face burst with life and energy.

As Gavin Guidry packs pages with horizontal panels separated by white space, interspersing them with occasional square or vertical ones, Adriano Lucas paints The Flash #33 with a palette of pastels. While yellow links Flash with the glowing windows of buildings, the blue interiors have more in common with Captain Cold. When Wally makes a crucial deduction, he arrives in a room filled with yellow. And when he gets the Flash of Insight he awaited, Wally sees himself in a scene colored yellow and red.

Buddy Beaudoin fills white dialogue balloons with black uppercase letters, while Wally's small white lowercase thoughts fill red narrative boxes. Words grow bold with intonation and shrink for lowered voices, while emotional intensity deforms balloons. Sound effects enhance Captain Cold employing his powers for good, Wally confronting a villain, and capitalizing on an unexpected insight. Thanks to DC Comics for sharing this story with us.

Final Thoughts

Fiction can inspire us to help or hurt people. As Wally seeks one villain's aid to protect the public, he discovers how a great story has prompted another to harm them in The Flash #33.
